RGBW GETS NOD OF APPROVAL FROM INDUSTRY GROUP FOR 4K ULTRA HD PICTURE STANDARD

Endorsement Puts an End to Dispute Over
the Format’s Exact Image Rendering Capabilities

A front view of LG RGBW 4K UHD TV.

SEOUL, June 1, 2016 — Last week in San Francisco, California, the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM) convened and officially recognized the RGBW TV format as meeting all the required qualifications for rendering 4K Ultra HD images. The ICDM’s recognition of RGBW as true 4K follows the organization’s conclusion that the same display assessment standards for RGB can apply to other advanced subpixel architectures such as RGBY and PenTile®, putting to rest the confusion over the exact capabilities of RGBW.

In Status of Pixels and Subpixel Rendering for Resolution Measurements (www.icdm-sid.org/updates/Docs/7p0-01-20160524.pdf), the ICDM writes:

It has been shown that the principles laid down in the International Display Measurement Standard (IDMS) can be successfully applied to measurement of the resolution of displays with flexible pixel arrangements. One way to cope with the existing conflicts of the IDMSv1p03b is to give up thinking in terms of pixels, and to start thinking in terms of subpixels instead. This is often referred to as subpixel rendering. The determination of line widths should also be done in terms of subpixels. As soon as the width of the moving window used for averaging of luminance profiles is not taken from ill-defined subpixel-to-pixel relationships, the procedure for determination of visual display resolution becomes straightforward and transparent.

The ICDM also made it a requirement for resolution tests to specify the contrast modulation value in verification documents. Contrast modulation is measured as a way to verify product compliance with resolution standards. According to the IDMS (International Display Measurement Standard), contrast modulation is the difference in brightness between each adjacent line in a horizontal and vertical grid of lines emitting light and color on the screen to create images, not the display resolution.

“We believe the ICDM’s recognition of the flexible pixel arrangement and subpixel rendering as being suitable for the measurement of resolution will bring confidence to consumers regarding 4K picture quality when they purchase UHD TVs based on RGBW technology,” said Brian Kwon, President and CEO at LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

LG TO DEMO HIGH HDR CAPABILITIES OF OLED TV AT SES ASTRA INDUSTRY DAY

Demo to Coincide with Launch of SES Ultra HD Test Channel Displaying Hybrid Log Gamma HDR Content

Officials of LG, BBC and SES pose in front of an LG OLED TV at the ninth SES Industry Days conference in Luxembourg.

SEOUL, May 27, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) is collaborating with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and satellite operator SES. to host a demonstration of High Dynamic Range (HDR) broadcast technologies at the ninth SES Industry Days conference this week in Luxembourg.

High quality HDR content will be transmitted to LG’s latest OLED TV via live satellite feed utilizing backward compatible HLG (hybrid log gamma) technology. HLG expands the contrast ratio and color reproduction capability of SDR TVs (Standard Dynamic Range). The HDR transmission demonstration by LG and the BBC will utilize SES Astra’s satellite network.

HLG technology was developed by the BBC and NHK to enable a backwards compatible transmission of HDR content. Employing a single distribution bit stream which can be decoded by both dedicated HDR receivers and legacy non-HDR receivers, the HLG system requires no production metadata, making it compatible with existing broadcast infrastructure, thereby enabling a straightforward migration to HDR television production.

The flexibility of the BBC’s innovative HDR HLG technology makes it an excellent choice for broadcast HDR services while SES’s new HDR test channel allows industry partners to test a variety of new display standards and content. Viewed on LG’s OLED TVs, HDR HLG content looks more realistic, delivers greater depth and the deepest blacks. As the first flat-panel television with infinite contrast ratio and no backlight panels, LG OLED TVs are unrivaled in their ability to deliver an HDR experience like no other.

“LG has been at the forefront of television innovation for decades,” said Wayne Park, executive vice president and head of LG’s European operations. “We are committed to supporting the efforts of our partners to standardize HDR broadcast technologies and make advanced display technology more widely available.”

CLIMBER HARNESSES POWER OF LG CORDZERO™ TO SCALE OFFICE TOWER

Made Possible with Smart Inverter Motor™ and Advanced Battery Technology

Professional rock climber Sierra Blair-Coyle with LG CordZero™ canister vacuum standing in front of 33-story office tower

SEOUL, May 24, 2016 — With nothing more than two LG CordZero™ canister vacuum cleaners strapped to her back, professional rock climber Sierra Blair-Coyle successfully scaled the side of a 140-meter high-rise building. The powerful performance of CordZero™ technology was on full display as LG teamed up with Blair-Coyle to create a unique climbing device using suction pads and the lightweight and long-lasting lithium-ion battery-equipped appliance.

Lugging two canister vacuums up a 33-story office tower, the premium cordless vacuum cleaners created enough suction to support Blair-Coyle’s weight while she carefully climbed toward the roof. Blair-Coyle completed the climb in less than 30 minutes, stopping only once for a fresh pair of vacuums, successfully pulling off the first stunt of its kind.

LG’s Smart Inverter Motor™ offers powerful performance in the cordless vacuum category, combining high efficiency with durability in a compact size. The Smart Inverter Motor™ is on average 28 percent smaller, 24 percent lighter and 13 percent more efficient than conventional vacuum motors. Powering the motor is the highly efficient PowerPack™ 80V lithium-ion battery, which provides up to 40 minutes of power in regular mode after only a four-hour charge.

“We hoped to draw attention to the innovative technologies that power the appliances we so often take for granted and this project succeeded in doing just that,” said Simon Jeon, senior vice president of washing machine business unit at the LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We wanted to demonstrate that today’s vacuum cleaners include sophisticated technologies that can undertake extraordinary challenges and thanks to Sierra, I think the message came through loud and clear.”

LG ANNOUNCES STARTUP INITIATIVE BY SPINNING OFF TWO PROJECTS

Fostering a Creative Culture Outside the Corporate Environment

A man uses art streaming platform, Acanvas, to connect his phone to one of its cord-free customizable digital frames, while a woman oversees with a smile on her face

SEOUL, May 16, 2016 ― LG Electronics (LG) is taking its “open innovation” strategy to the next level by spinning off of two initiatives originally incubated in-house: Acanvas and Infit & Company Inc. While LG will provide use of the patented technology, both companies will be managed completely by former LG employees and will be responsible for their own fundraising and strategy.

Acanvas will focus on developing its art streaming platform into a viable business. The art streaming platform contains millions of licensed works of art displayed in cord-free customizable digital frames. Acanvas just started a Kickstarter campaign (http://bit.ly/1rYG7vj) last week to fund its completion of development. Acanvas will initially target North America with plans to expand to other markets next year.

Infit & Company Inc. is the company behind the Imaging Modular Diagnosis Machine, a medical product which employs the latest technologies to diagnose conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. By using an affordable and safer optical imaging system instead of radiation to peer inside patients, Infit & Company Inc. hopes to revolutionize medical care.

To show its support for the venture and to alleviate a major risk associated with startups, LG has promised employees who join either of the two new companies that they will have guaranteed positions at LG if they should decide to return within three years. What’s more, LG will expand its initiatives to encourage more of the type of thinking that led to the formation of Acanvas and Infit. LG’s Idea Power Plant is one program LG has developed to identify and fund with up to 10 million Korean won the most promising employee-generated ideas that can be commercialized within five months.

“For us at LG, open innovation shouldn’t just be a motto, it should be actionable as well,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CTO of LG Electronics. “By giving these two startups their own identity and freedom from the bureaucracies of a large organization, we are sending a very clear message to innovator and the public that we are not interested in maintaining the status quo.”

FIRST LG G5 SOFTWARE UPDATE ADDS APP DRAWER OPTION, BURST SHOOTING WITH CAM PLUS

SEOUL, Apr. 29, 2016 — This week LG Electronics (LG), in partnership with mobile operators, began rolling out a software update with improvements in the usability of the LG G5 and CAM Plus module. Key markets in Asia will receive the update first, followed by customers in North America* and Europe over the next several weeks.

The app drawer, a familiar feature in all previous LG smarphones, returns to LG G5 by popular demand. Until now only available as a download at LG SmartWorld, UX 5.0 with app drawer is available to LG G5 owners over-the-air (OTA) via Wi-Fi. Rather than overwriting the original home layout, the update will appear as “Home & app drawer” under the G5’s home setting once the optional download is confirmed. G5 owners who prefer the original layout without the app drawer can just select “Home” in the settings.

The second notable improvement is the addition of continuous or “burst” mode when using the LG CAM Plus module. With burst mode and LG CAM Plus, aspiring shutterbugs can capture up to 10 shots per second, up to a maximum of 30 frames, for a more DSLR-like shooting experience.

* Recipients of the software upgrade in the United States will depend on the carrier network.

LG ANNOUNCES FIRST-QUARTER 2016 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Premium Focused Strategy Results in Highest Profitability Ever for LG Appliances and TVs

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Apr. 28, 2016 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced first-quarter 2016 operating profit of KRW 505.2 billion (USD 420.25 million), a 65.5 percent increase from the same period in 2015 on sales of KRW 13.36 trillion (USD 11.12 billion).

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company contributed the largest amount, KRW 407.8 billion (USD 339.23 million) in operating income for the quarter, while the LG Home Entertainment Company earned KRW 335.2 billion (USD 278.84 million) in operating profit, both up significantly from the first quarter of 2015. The LG Mobile Communications Company posted an operating loss of KRW 202.2 billion (USD 168.20 million) primarily due to increased marketing expenditures for the new LG G5 flagship smartphone, while the LG Vehicle Components Company reported a modest loss of KRW 15.8 billion (USD 13.14 million) reflecting higher R&D investments.

LG’s overall global sales and profitability are expected to improve in the second quarter, with double-digit growth in revenues and higher profitability anticipated as LG continues its premium-focused strategy with LG SIGNATURE products, the LG G5 smartphone and 4K Ultra HD OLED TVs.

LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company recorded sales of KRW 4.22 trillion (USD 3.51 billion) in the first quarter, an increase of 4 percent year-on-year due in large part to higher premium product sales and growth in its B2B operations. Operating profit and operating margin of 9.7 percent were the highest in the history of LG home appliances. Revenues in the Korean domestic market increased 11 percent from the same period the previous year thanks to strong performance of TWIN Wash washing machines, premium refrigerators and commercial air conditioners. Weaker demand caused by the drop in oil prices and unfavorable currency exchange movements negatively affected sales in markets such as the Middle East, South America and CIS, while revenues in North America and Europe remained strong.

LG Mobile Communications Company reported sales of KRW 2.96 trillion (USD 2.46 billion), a decline of 15.5 percent from the first quarter last year. Shipments of 13.5 million smartphones were 12 percent lower both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter, mainly as a result of the business entering the slow season as well as declining shipments of existing flagship models due to high interest in the recently announced LG G5. Competition in the smartphone market will continue to increase, leading to further price erosion which LG plans to counter with a strong global push for the modular LG G5 smartphone and new mass-tier models such as its X series.

LG Home Entertainment Company reported revenues of KRW 4.33 trillion (USD 3.6 billion), down 2.3 percent from last year’s first quarter as TV shipments declined somewhat in the key markets of North America and Europe. A solid operating margin of 7.7 percent was accompanied by a 207 percent increase quarter-on-quarter in operating income, demonstrating strong evidence of the growing demand for premium OLED and 4K OLED TV products. Improved cost structure and cost competitiveness is expected to drive improved profitability in the next quarter.

LG Vehicle Components Company sales of KRW 592.9 billion (USD 493.2 million) represent a 55 percent year-on-year increase, on the back of LG’s growing automotive infotainment business, although profitability was negatively affected by increased R&D investments. The outlook for LG’s automotive business is positive, with higher expected demand for electric vehicle components and as LG expands its global reach and secures new customers.

LG ELECTRONICS DEMONSTRATES ATSC 3.0 WIRELESS NETWORK ANTENNA

New ‘Gateway’ Device to Deliver Next-Gen Broadcast TV
to Smart TVs and Other Connected Devices

Visitors to LG’s booth at the 2016 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention observe and discuss the company’s ATSC 3.0 smart antenna.

LAS VEGAS, Apr. 18, 2016 – LG Electronics today demonstrated a unique new wireless network antenna designed to receive and process ATSC 3.0 next-generation television broadcast signals and redistribute them via Wi-Fi throughout the home to connected devices such as smart TVs, tablets, laptop computers and smartphones.

Taking the wraps off a two-year development project, the company is demonstrating the ATSC 3.0 smart antenna for the first time at the 2016 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention here this week. It is a featured product in the “ATSC 3.0 Consumer Experience” exhibit, co-hosted by the NAB, the Consumer Technology Association and the Advanced Television Systems Committee.

Today’s announcement underscores the momentum behind the ATSC 3.0 standard and spotlights LG’s commitment to accelerating deployment of next-generation television, according to Dr. Jong Kim, senior vice president, LG Electronics, and president of LG’s Zenith R&D Lab in the United States. “In addition to showing how such consumer-friendly products will support the rollout of next-gen broadcasting, this device, built around the world’s first ATSC 3.0 demodulator chip, exemplifies our progress,” he said.

Sam Matheny, NAB Senior Vice President and CTO, welcomed the early development of devices such as LG’s smart network antenna. “This is a unique product that combines next-generation broadcasting with widely deployed home Wi-Fi networks and is the kind of offering that can help broadcasters bring their new ATSC 3.0 signals to a range of consumer devices in a seamless manner.”

“Innovations like the LG smart network antenna will play an important role in accelerating the consumer adoption of ATSC 3.0 by enabling existing devices in the home and reducing the need for multiple converter boxes,” said Anne Schelle, Executive Director of Pearl TV, the consortium of nine major broadcast groups representing more than 200 U.S. television stations.

The ATSC 3.0 wireless network antenna is based on an LG-developed uni-directional antenna array with unique electronic steering logic designed to optimize indoor reception. LG is integrating a chip-based ATSC 3.0 tuner-demodulator with the antenna, which can be placed virtually anywhere in the home – in the attic, in a window, in a closet – wherever reception is best.

The steerable network antenna is coupled with a network interface to communicate with the in-home Wi-Fi router to allow connected devices to blend ATSC 3.0 signals and services with over-the-top Internet-delivered content. The Wireless Network Antenna also is designed to receive current “ATSC 1.0” DTV transmissions and similarly route them to an array of consumer devices.

Development of the LG ATSC 3.0 wireless network antenna, which began in 2014, is a joint effort of LG’s Zenith R&D Lab in Lincolnshire, Ill., USA, and the office of the Chief Technology Officer, LG Electronics, in Seoul, Korea.

Expected to redefine TV broadcasting for decades to come, the next-generation ATSC 3.0 broadcast television system is being designed to deliver 4K UHD services, robust reception on mobile devices and improved spectrum efficiency. LG and Zenith are key contributors to ATSC standards activities, including development of core technologies in the majority of the ATSC 3.0 Physical Layer transmission system.
