Listeners prioritizing portability and rugged durability will be drawn to the PH2 and PH4. Weighing only 167 grams, the compact, splash-proof PH2 is designed to bring high-quality audio to even the most active users. This versatile speaker is ready for anything that users may throw its way, perfect for customers who enjoy the great outdoors. The more powerful PH4 speaker is perfectly suited for outdoor gatherings such as campouts or poolside barbeques where powerful sound is required. Delivering complex, powerful and rich sound while maintaining portability and flexibility, the PH4 is ideal for audiophiles who refuse to compromise.

Both the PH2 and PH4 boast a connected strap which makes it easy to attach the speakers to a variety of surfaces for added portability. Rain and splashes are no problem for either speaker due to their water resistant design that allows them to be taken almost anywhere. With 360 degree omni-directional output and Bass Boost, both speakers deliver crystal-clear sound in any setting. The Dual Passive Radiators featured in the PH4 increase sound quality and bass output unmatched by other similarly-sized speakers. LED indicators and a long lasting batteries (PH2: 6 hours, PH4: 10 hours) enhance portability and usability, making the speakers the natural choice for active customers.

Built to match any décor, the lights on the eye-catching PH3 help set the mood no matter where it is placed — from night tables to garden terraces. The unique candle-like PH3 comes in three colors and features five different multicolored lighting modes. This combination of rich audio and vibrant lights set it apart from the competition with illuminated music that reaches every corner of a room. And the speaker’s 10-hour built-in battery gives users an unprecedented degree of freedom.

All three speakers are equipped with auxiliary input ports to connect to devices without Bluetooth capability such as older MP3 and CD players. For newer devices, the speakers’ advanced Multi Point connectivity features allows for connection to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously.

The PH1 features built-in mood lighting and a five-hour battery, perfect for any room in the house. Lightweight and portable with Bluetooth and hands-free speakerphone capabilities, this speaker can also be used as a nightlight.

“At LG, we seek to develop products that fit the real life needs of consumers,” said Brian Kwon, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “With our diverse lineup of wireless speakers, I am confident consumers will be able to find the perfect audio solution for any setting.”

Visitors to the LG’s booth in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin during IFA 2016 will have a chance to experience the new products firsthand.

LG V20, WORLD’S FIRST SMARTPHONE WITH QUAD DAC FOR BEST IN CLASS AUDIO

LG and ESS Technology Collaborate to Deliver One-of-a-Kind Audio Experience

LG-logo

SEOUL, Aug. 11, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) announced that its forthcoming flagship smartphone, LG V20, will be the first smartphone in the industry to feature 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC (digital to analog converter) capabilities, bringing a superior audio experience to mobile for the very first time.

A Quad DAC delivers a crisp and clear sound that comes closest to a live performance when using compatible wired headphones. The sound is superior to that produced by a traditional DAC as it can reduce up to 50 percent of ambient noise levels. Videos taken with the V20 are accompanied by a soundtrack that can capture the roaring sound of waves crashing on a beach or conversations among two individuals at a noisy party.

LG worked closely with ESS Technology, a leader in high-performance analog and audio devices, to ensure that the Quad DAC, delivered the best audio experience for owners of the LG V20. The Quad DAC is the lynchpin of the many cutting-edge multimedia features included in the LG V20. ESS Technology previously provided its 32-bit Hi-Fi DAC in the V10, LG V20’s predecessor.

“As smartphones mature, we’re seeing more and more customers looking beyond just fast processors and big displays in their devices,” said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics and Mobile Communications Company. “Higher quality audio is simply the natural evolution of the smartphone, as the industry moves toward a more holistic multimedia consumption experience. We’re pleased to continue this long-term partnership with ESS and bring best in class audio to LG V20 users.”

“We are extremely excited that our Quad DAC technology will be featured in the V20, LG’s latest flagship smartphone for consumers who demand the best media experience,” said Robert Blair, president and chief executive officer of ESS Technology. “As a technology more typically available in high-end audio equipment, Quad DAC on the V20 will make users feel as if they are carrying around a professional home-audio system on their smartphone.”

A PEEK INSIDE LG G5

Whether you feel that you’re ready for a modular experience on your smartphone, if the reaction at this year’s Mobile World Congress is any indicator, there’s no question that the concept has been on gadget aficianados’ minds for some time. While we still have a ways to go because we see phones that turn into robots (http://goo.gl/7CJ1xp), the era of modularly is certainly upon us, although it’s at a very nascent stage.
a

If you’ve ever been curious about the inner workings of LG’s interpretation of a modular smartphone, you’ve come to the right place!

Battery and lower section of LG G5 modular smartphone being removed

The design of LG G5 makes it easy to access internal parts for fast and easy repairs. The G5’s main body and metal cover are connected with just a pair of screws. The middle frame and circuit board are connected by only six screws. The LG G5 was designed from the beginning to be easy to disassemble. Traditional smartphones use soldered parts because it’s cheaper and the connections are stronger. But soldered parts are also inherently difficult to take apart, even for service professionals.

All modular components of LG G5 laid out on flat surface

The brain behind the smartphone, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, is easy to spot when the main board is detached and the protective cover removed. This application processor sits next to a 32GB UFS (Universal Flash Storage) ROM, which reads and writes significantly faster than eMMCs and SD cards.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 and 32GB Universal Flash Storage (UFS) ROM

The most notable thing when the G5 is disassembled is the smartphone’s two rear cameras and one front camera.

The LG G5’s two rear camera modules and front camera shown with other components

The 16-megapixel camera on the rear has a 78-degree normal angle view. There is an OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) feature on the right side of the camera that eliminates camera shake for high-quality photographs in low-light circumstances. The adjacent 8-megapixel camera offers a wide angle view of 135 degrees which is greater than that of the human eye. With this lens, you can include 70 percent more environmental information than smartphones with regular cameras from the same vantage point.

The Fingerprint Scan Sensor sits in the middle, immediately below the dual camera lenses, the optimal location for one’s forefinger when using the smartphone.

With its unique Modular Design, the LG G5 was recognized at MWC for representing the peak of innovation in smartphone design. Only time will tell how the smartphone evolves but based on early reactions, it seems safe to say that modularity will be with us for the long term.

NEW LG V20 TO BE WORLD’S FIRST PHONE TO LAUNCH WITH ANDROID 7.0 NOUGAT

Successor to Acclaimed V10 Offers More Advanced Multimedia Features

LG-logo

SEOUL, Aug. 1, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) confirms that its next flagship smartphone, LG V20, will be the first device to feature Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. The LG V20 will begin shipping in the third quarter.

The LG V20 builds upon the premium and rich multimedia smartphone experience of last year’s LG V10. It will be tuned to take advantage of many of the best features of Nougat, including Vulkan-supported graphics for more immersive gaming while also delivering better battery performance with Doze. Consumers will also enjoy new productivity features such as Direct Reply, which lets users respond quickly to text messages or update tasks using the notification interface.

LG and Google have collaborated closely since the 2009 launch of the very first Android phone from LG based on Android 1.5 Cupcake. The two companies continued to collaborate on a series of Nexus smartphones starting with the Nexus 4 in 2012, which was shipped with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the Nexus 5 that was released in 2013 with Android 4.4 KitKat, and the Nexus 5X that was unveiled in 2015 featuring Android 6.0 Marshmallow. LG and Google have also teamed up to offer smart wearables such as LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition, the world’s first and only Android Wear smartwatch with cellular-based connectivity.

“We are excited to offer the first phone in the world to feature Nougat out of the box,” said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics and Mobile Communications Company. “The LG V20 upgrades and extends its predecessor’s cutting-edge multimedia features a step further, providing distinctive mobile experience and sets a new standard for premium phones for consumers.”

LG BREAKS ANOTHER GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ TITLE THIS TIME WITH LIGHTBULBS

One way to demonstrate greatness is setting a Guinness World Records title. No one does this better than LG Electronics.

LG’s Guinness World Records title-winning light bulb-based display laid out on the floor of a large auditorium.

LG achieved another Guinness World Records title for largest image created using only lightbulbs to demonstrate the exceptional energy efficiency of its Centum System™ refrigerator.

A display showing ‘18,072’ – the number of individual fluorescent bulbs used to create a giant 12-meter-by-9.6-meter image

A total of 18,072 individual fluorescent bulbs were used to create a 12 meter by 9.6 meter image of gargantuan proportions depicting an LG Centum System refrigerator. The finished work of art shattered the previous record of 11,022 bulbs, set in 2014.

Illuminating the image for one hour required 198.8kWh of electricity, equivalent to what an A+++ -20% energy efficiency-rated Centum System refrigerator can save in a year compared to an A+-rated model. This is approximately the same amount of electricity required to power a vacuum cleaner five and a half hours per day for one year or to run a hair dryer approximately 30 minutes every day for nearly 18 years. These figures are based on the minimum energy required for the LG GBB60 series to achieve A+ and A+++ -20% energy efficiency ratings (based on EU Regulation No. 1060/2010).

LG personnel working with mosaic artist Serge Belo, and media artist group Everyware, to build the gargantuan image

Teaming up with mosaic artist Serge Belo and media artist group Everyware, LG designed and built the image in a 48-hour process that involved adding color filters to each individual bulb.

Several people working on constructing the bulb-based display in a large auditoriumThe lightbulb image marks the second Centum System-related Guinness World Records title set this year. In April, LG proved the stability of the washing machine by constructing the tallest house of ordinary playing cards on top of the washing machine while spinning at 1,000 RPM.

LG ANNOUNCES IMPROVED SECOND-QUARTER 2016 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Home Appliance and Home Entertainment Units Again Post Record Quarterly Profits

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, July 28, 2016 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced second-quarter 2016 operating income of KRW 584.6 billion (USD 503.10 million), nearly 140 percent higher than the previous year, from strong performance by the Home Appliance & Air Solution and Home Entertainment companies, both reporting the highest quarterly operating profit in LG’s history. Global consolidated revenues of KRW 14 trillion (USD 12.05 billion) increased both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter.

LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company accounted for the largest share of the second quarter’s operating profit with KRW 433.7 billion (USD 373.24 million). Revenues of KRW 4.70 trillion (USD 4.04 billion), an increase of 4.8 percent from the second quarter last year, were driven by growth in B2B sales of air conditioning systems and strong overall performance in Korea, Europe and Asia. With an improved product portfolio and cost structure, the business unit was able to achieve an operating margin of more than 9 percent. Going forward, premium products such as the LG SIGNATURE collection, TWINWash and LG Styler are expected to contribute positively to the performance of the company.

LG Mobile Communications Company saw revenues of KRW 3.33 trillion (USD 2.86 billion) increase 12 percent from the first quarter, while declining from the same period the year before. An operating loss of KRW 153.5 billion (USD 132.10 million) reflected increased marketing expenditures and somewhat slow initial sales of G5 smartphone. Overall smartphone shipments increased 3 percent from the previous quarter with a total of 13.9 million smartphones shipped in the second quarter. The launch of the new V series and expanding sales of mass-tier K and X series models are expected to improve the business unit’s performance next quarter.

LG Home Entertainment Company reported a record KRW 356.7 billion (USD 306.97 million) in operating profit on revenues of KRW 4.16 trillion (USD 3.58 billion), a 5.7 percent increase from the 2015 second quarter, in large part thanks to the growing market for premium TVs. An increase in sales of higher-end ULTRA HD and OLED TVs and improved cost structure management contributed to an operating margin of 8.6 percent, the highest in the history of LG’s home entertainment division. The business unit will continue to benefit from the growing UHD and OLED TV markets and cost competitiveness, although cost increases for flat-panel components may affect profitability.

LG Vehicle Components Company reported sales of KRW 639.6 billion (USD 550.4 million), an increase of 42 percent from the same period the previous year, thanks to high growth in the automotive infotainment sector. Increased R&D investments in infotainment and electric vehicle technologies, however, contributed to an operating loss of KRW 16.8 billion (USD 14.46 million) in the quarter. The outlook for LG’s automotive component business is positive with production of components for the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle commencing in the third quarter.

FIVE FACTS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT LG G5

The LG G5 is already renowned for its modular design, wide-angle camera and its Friends ecosystem. However, there’s more. The LG G5 is a virtual treasure chest of features, functions and aspects that users may not yet have discovered. Here is just a handful…

1. The charging cradle is also a versatile battery charger.

LG G5 hybrid battery charger connected to an LG 360 CAM

Since the G5 battery charging cradle (purchased separately) comes equipped with a USB Type-A socket as well as USB Type-C socket, it can be used not only as a battery charging cradle for the G5 but also as an external battery pack for many devices with USB Type-C.

2. Go half a workday with just 10 minutes of battery charge.

Thanks to the Dual Charger ICs embedded in the G5, the phone takes just 25 minutes to charge from 0 percent to 50 percent – other smartphones usually take 34 minutes – and can even speed-charge for four hours’ worth of use after just a 10-minute charge.

3. LG Friends are friendly to everyone.

LG Friends can connect to a host of external devices such as iOS smartphones, PCs, laptops, tablets and more

It is not widely known that the LG Friends – LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY, LG 360 CAM and LG TONE Platinum – can even connect to smartphones running iOS*. What’s more, LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY can be connected to a PC, laptop or tablet via cables while LG TONE Platinum can connect to a PC via Bluetooth.

4. G5 is the only smartphone on the market that takes “Auto Shots”.

LG G5 hybrid battery charger connected to an LG 360 CAM

LG has advanced beyond the Gesture Shot, equipping the G5 with an Auto Shot function that makes taking selfies super-simple; the user is no longer even required to press a button to trigger the shutter. Set to selfie mode, the G5 automatically takes a shot one second after the subject stops moving. This works even with faces in a magazine or even a doll!

5. Wireless Data Transfer is just one-click away.

LG G5 transferring data to another smartphone using NFC technology

One of the biggest inconveniences when buying a new smartphone is transferring all of one’s personal data from the old phone to the new phone. With UX 5.0 in the G5 transferring data seamlessly with NFC technology and LG Back Up is extremely easy. Just a single click transfers all the data from any NFC-capable Android or iOS smartphone to the G5 – apps, data, memos, even text messages.

*Compatibility Requirements: Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY requires Android 5.0, iOS 6, Windows 7, Mac OS 10. 9 and above, USB OTG high speed and UAC2 (USB Audio Class 2). 360 CAM requires Android 5.0, iOS 8, Windows 7, Mac OS 10.10 and above.

LG AND VOLKSWAGEN COMMIT TO JOINTLY DEVELOP CONNECTED CAR PLATFORM

Leaders in Electronics and Automotive Partner to
Drive Innovation in the Connected Car Market

Logo of LG Electronics

SEOUL, July 6, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) and Volkswagen AG have entered into a memorandum of understanding signaling their commitment to cooperate on the research and development of a next-generation connected car service platform.

Key LG executives present at the signing at Volkswagen HQ in Wolfsburg, Germany included Richard Choi, head of LG Cloud Center, Lee Sang-yong, head of LG Vehicle Infotainment System Research Lab. Representing Volkswagen were Prof. Thomas Form, head of Electronics and Vehicle Research and Robert Kattner, head of Vehicle Information Systems Research.

The two companies will work together to develop Volkswagen’s Cross-Over-Platform to enhance vehicle connectivity and convenience. Using the latest in cloud technology, the goal of the new platform is to offer drivers a seamless digital life with access to features such as smart home services and location based services from their vehicles

Over the course of the next few years, LG and Volkswagen will collaborate to:

  • Develop technologies that bring together the connected car and the smart home, giving drivers the ability to control and monitor smart devices in their homes — such as lights, security systems and household supplies — from the road.
  • Develop a notification center that understands context and delivers notices in an intuitive and safe manner and also provides optimized recommendations for drivers to respond based on real-time situations.
  • Develop optimized next generation infotainment technology for connected cars.

“Volkswagen is pressing on with the digitalization of its brands,” said Professor Form at the official signing of the agreement. “Our focus in doing so is always on our customers. For them, comfort, safety and energy efficiency play a central role. LG is a strong, reliable partner in the implementation of new features and one of the drivers of innovation in the networked household. We look forward to working with LG and to developing in future simple, easy-to-use smart home solutions for our customers integrated into our vehicle systems.”

“LG Electronics and Volkswagen are teaming up to develop the next generation of connected car platform that allows wide integration with smart home services and adoption of open IoT connectivity technologies,” said Richard Choi, head of the LG Cloud Center. “We think LG’s expertise in smart technology together with Volkswagen’s leadership in the automotive space will revolutionize the way drivers interact with their vehicles.”

This latest agreement is an example of the long and mutually beneficial relationship LG and Volkswagen have developed over decades. LG was one of the first electronics companies to commit itself to the automotive industry with the launch of its Vehicle Components division in July 2013. Even before then, LG has been working closely with Volkswagen since 2007, supplying advanced audio-visuals products for vehicles and establishing a reputation for reliability and technological innovation.

In March in 2015, Volkswagen subsidiary Italdesign Guigiaro unveiled its GEA concept car at the Geneva Motor Show with seven key components supplied by LG Electronics, including the holographic display, connected smart watch, rear lamp and camera. In July, LG was selected as Volkswagen’s strategic electronics supplier and also listed as a partner company on its FAST (Future Automotive Supply Tracks) program. At CES earlier this year, the two companies successfully demonstrated an advanced smart home service that could be controlled remotely from a vehicle.

LG IMPRESSES AGAIN AT INTERSOLAR EUROPE WITH NEON 2 BIFACIAL

Capable of Absorbing Rays From Any Angle, LG’s New Solar Solution
Receives Prestigious Award for Record-Setting Third Time

LG receives its third consecutive Intersolar Award for its new innovative NeON™ 2 BiFacial solar module at Intersolar Europe 2016, Munich, Germany.

SEOUL, June 24, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) received its third consecutive Intersolar Award for its new innovative NeON™ 2 BiFacial solar module at Intersolar Europe this week in Munich, Germany. LG first received the award with the Mono X NeON in 2013 and again in 2015 for the NeON 2.

The NeON 2 BiFacial is the company’s most efficient premium solar module to date. While conventional solar modules have opaque backside, the NeON 2 BiFacial features transparent materials on both sides. This allows backside of the panel to collect light reflected from the ground and greatly boosts overall efficiency. The panel’s front side alone is capable of generating up to 310W and under optimal conditions, the energy gathering capabilities of the rear panel increase power generation by an additional maximum 30 percent. The total power generated by each panel puts the NeON™ 2 BiFacial in the same range as 400W high generation modules.

Featuring LG Electronics’ innovative Cello Technology™, NeON 2 BiFacial minimizes energy loss by diversifying electrical paths. Typical solar panels have only three electrical paths but Cello Technology™ replaces those with 12 thin wires to allow electric current to flow more freely and efficiently. The advanced solar modules are particularly effective when installed on skyscraper rooftops and near freeways as sound absorbing walls because it can be installed vertically.

“This award symbolizes LG’s commitment to developing innovative, world-leading solar technologies,” said Lee Chung-ho, senior vice president and head of LG’s Solar Business Division. “Having set new standards in the solar industry, LG will continue to lead the global market with its top-of–the-line, high efficiency solar solutions.”

First held in 1991, Intersolar Europe is the world’s largest exhibition for the solar industry. This year, over 1,000 companies from around the world presented their latest solar energy innovations and products to a global audience.

LG OLED TV BRINGS NORTHERN LIGHTS TO ICELAND THIS SUMMER

Including Online Promotion for Fans to Win Tickets to Reykjavik Concert

LG’s HDR-enabled 4K OLED TV displaying the Aurora Borealis.

SEOUL, June 21, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) is kicking off a campaign to make the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, visible to audiences around the globe in the most unique way — via its cutting-edge HDR-enabled 4K OLED TVs. LG will showcase the OLED Aurora Borealis at an event in Reykjavik, Iceland kicking off with a concert featuring, Icelandic musicians, on July 20, followed by a four-month photo exhibition portraying the beauty of Iceland on LG OLED TVs.

The Northern Lights cannot be observed in Iceland from April to August due to the midnight sun which keeps the country lit almost 24 hours a day. To give summer tourists and residents their first opportunity to view the Aurora Borealis during the summer months, LG has invited nearly one thousand guests to the Lights Out, Stars On concert where the hometown Icelandic musicians will perform. For one night only, the award-winning Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, with its glass panels resembling the elegant Picture-on-Glass of LG SIGNATURE OLED TV will feature 40 large OLED TVs installed in an array to display the Icelandic night sky on their perfectly black screens. Contestants will have the opportunity to win tickets to the concert and an all-expenses paid Reykjavik travel package. Competition details can be found at www.facebook.com/lgtv.

The campaign will also feature a photography exhibition displaying images of scenic Icelandic landscapes and night skies on LG OLED TVs. Captured by a number of talented Icelandic photographers, the images showing the natural beauty of the heavens and the Earth will be displayed in a whole new perspective on the perfect surfaces of LG OLED TVs. The photo exhibition will run from July 20 until November 20 in Harpa Concert Hall.

Throughout the campaign, LG has worked closely with award-winning Icelandic writer and activist Andri Magnason. Also joining will be professional astrophotographer Sean Parker, who has created original works of art depicting the beautiful Aurora-filled night skies of Iceland. Popular tech YouTuber Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox Therapy will serve as creative director for the campaign.

During the 2006 Aurora Borealis viewing season, Icelandic poet and novelist Andri Magnason suggested that the city of Reykjavik come together to make the beauty of the night sky visible within the city for the first time. Magnason wanted the people of Reykjavik to see the northern lights and stars against a completely black backdrop. Just as eliminating light pollution allowed the people of Reykjavik to see the lights in all their glory, the pitch black backdrop of OLED TVs heightens the contrast and delivers richer images. LG OLED TVs feature individually illuminated pixels, eliminating the need for image-distorting LED backlights. Without this backlight, OLED TVs are capable of displaying perfect black images alongside bright, lifelike colors.

“LG has been an innovator in TV technology for the last 50 years and this drive to create the best display has culminated in today’s OLED TV,” said Brian Kwon, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “By accurately capturing the beauty of Iceland’s Northern Lights, residents and tourists alike will be able to experience the magic of nature as only LG OLED TV makes possible.”

The concert and photo exhibition will take place at the award-winning Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik. Tickets are available at www.tix.is/en/event/2973/lights-out-stars-on.
