Premium Focused Strategy Results in Highest Profitability Ever for LG Appliances and TVs

SEOUL, Apr. 28, 2016 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced first-quarter 2016 operating profit of KRW 505.2 billion (USD 420.25 million), a 65.5 percent increase from the same period in 2015 on sales of KRW 13.36 trillion (USD 11.12 billion).

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company contributed the largest amount, KRW 407.8 billion (USD 339.23 million) in operating income for the quarter, while the LG Home Entertainment Company earned KRW 335.2 billion (USD 278.84 million) in operating profit, both up significantly from the first quarter of 2015. The LG Mobile Communications Company posted an operating loss of KRW 202.2 billion (USD 168.20 million) primarily due to increased marketing expenditures for the new LG G5 flagship smartphone, while the LG Vehicle Components Company reported a modest loss of KRW 15.8 billion (USD 13.14 million) reflecting higher R&D investments.

LG’s overall global sales and profitability are expected to improve in the second quarter, with double-digit growth in revenues and higher profitability anticipated as LG continues its premium-focused strategy with LG SIGNATURE products, the LG G5 smartphone and 4K Ultra HD OLED TVs.

LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company recorded sales of KRW 4.22 trillion (USD 3.51 billion) in the first quarter, an increase of 4 percent year-on-year due in large part to higher premium product sales and growth in its B2B operations. Operating profit and operating margin of 9.7 percent were the highest in the history of LG home appliances. Revenues in the Korean domestic market increased 11 percent from the same period the previous year thanks to strong performance of TWIN Wash washing machines, premium refrigerators and commercial air conditioners. Weaker demand caused by the drop in oil prices and unfavorable currency exchange movements negatively affected sales in markets such as the Middle East, South America and CIS, while revenues in North America and Europe remained strong.

LG Mobile Communications Company reported sales of KRW 2.96 trillion (USD 2.46 billion), a decline of 15.5 percent from the first quarter last year. Shipments of 13.5 million smartphones were 12 percent lower both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter, mainly as a result of the business entering the slow season as well as declining shipments of existing flagship models due to high interest in the recently announced LG G5. Competition in the smartphone market will continue to increase, leading to further price erosion which LG plans to counter with a strong global push for the modular LG G5 smartphone and new mass-tier models such as its X series.

LG Home Entertainment Company reported revenues of KRW 4.33 trillion (USD 3.6 billion), down 2.3 percent from last year’s first quarter as TV shipments declined somewhat in the key markets of North America and Europe. A solid operating margin of 7.7 percent was accompanied by a 207 percent increase quarter-on-quarter in operating income, demonstrating strong evidence of the growing demand for premium OLED and 4K OLED TV products. Improved cost structure and cost competitiveness is expected to drive improved profitability in the next quarter.

LG Vehicle Components Company sales of KRW 592.9 billion (USD 493.2 million) represent a 55 percent year-on-year increase, on the back of LG’s growing automotive infotainment business, although profitability was negatively affected by increased R&D investments. The outlook for LG’s automotive business is positive, with higher expected demand for electric vehicle components and as LG expands its global reach and secures new customers.

LG ELECTRONICS DEMONSTRATES ATSC 3.0 WIRELESS NETWORK ANTENNA

New ‘Gateway’ Device to Deliver Next-Gen Broadcast TV
to Smart TVs and Other Connected Devices

Visitors to LG’s booth at the 2016 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention observe and discuss the company’s ATSC 3.0 smart antenna.

LAS VEGAS, Apr. 18, 2016 – LG Electronics today demonstrated a unique new wireless network antenna designed to receive and process ATSC 3.0 next-generation television broadcast signals and redistribute them via Wi-Fi throughout the home to connected devices such as smart TVs, tablets, laptop computers and smartphones.

Taking the wraps off a two-year development project, the company is demonstrating the ATSC 3.0 smart antenna for the first time at the 2016 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention here this week. It is a featured product in the “ATSC 3.0 Consumer Experience” exhibit, co-hosted by the NAB, the Consumer Technology Association and the Advanced Television Systems Committee.

Today’s announcement underscores the momentum behind the ATSC 3.0 standard and spotlights LG’s commitment to accelerating deployment of next-generation television, according to Dr. Jong Kim, senior vice president, LG Electronics, and president of LG’s Zenith R&D Lab in the United States. “In addition to showing how such consumer-friendly products will support the rollout of next-gen broadcasting, this device, built around the world’s first ATSC 3.0 demodulator chip, exemplifies our progress,” he said.

Sam Matheny, NAB Senior Vice President and CTO, welcomed the early development of devices such as LG’s smart network antenna. “This is a unique product that combines next-generation broadcasting with widely deployed home Wi-Fi networks and is the kind of offering that can help broadcasters bring their new ATSC 3.0 signals to a range of consumer devices in a seamless manner.”

“Innovations like the LG smart network antenna will play an important role in accelerating the consumer adoption of ATSC 3.0 by enabling existing devices in the home and reducing the need for multiple converter boxes,” said Anne Schelle, Executive Director of Pearl TV, the consortium of nine major broadcast groups representing more than 200 U.S. television stations.

The ATSC 3.0 wireless network antenna is based on an LG-developed uni-directional antenna array with unique electronic steering logic designed to optimize indoor reception. LG is integrating a chip-based ATSC 3.0 tuner-demodulator with the antenna, which can be placed virtually anywhere in the home – in the attic, in a window, in a closet – wherever reception is best.

The steerable network antenna is coupled with a network interface to communicate with the in-home Wi-Fi router to allow connected devices to blend ATSC 3.0 signals and services with over-the-top Internet-delivered content. The Wireless Network Antenna also is designed to receive current “ATSC 1.0” DTV transmissions and similarly route them to an array of consumer devices.

Development of the LG ATSC 3.0 wireless network antenna, which began in 2014, is a joint effort of LG’s Zenith R&D Lab in Lincolnshire, Ill., USA, and the office of the Chief Technology Officer, LG Electronics, in Seoul, Korea.

Expected to redefine TV broadcasting for decades to come, the next-generation ATSC 3.0 broadcast television system is being designed to deliver 4K UHD services, robust reception on mobile devices and improved spectrum efficiency. LG and Zenith are key contributors to ATSC standards activities, including development of core technologies in the majority of the ATSC 3.0 Physical Layer transmission system.

Roadshow Brings LG SIGNATURE, Centum System™
and LG’s Smart Home Platform to Regional Audience

The logo of LG Electronics

BUDAPEST, Apr. 10, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) will demonstrate its commitment to consumers at InnoFest Europe 2016, a roadshow to showcase its newest collection of appliance products for the European market, a fiercely competitive region in the home appliance industry. InnoFest Europe 2016 will take place at the historic Bálna Budapest Center from April 10-12 and will be attended by 225 guests representing regional retailers, business partners and media.

LG SIGNATURE: Redefining Premium Appliance

Making its debut on European soil for the first time, LG SIGNATURE brings together the company’s differentiated technology and cutting-edge designs under a single lineup. LG’s Art of Essence philosophy evokes LG SIGNATURE’s aim to stay pure and sophisticated, true to each product’s core character. The initial products in the LG SIGNATURE lineup include a more advanced TWIN Wash™ washing machine, a cutting-edge Door-in-Door™ refrigerator and a futuristic hybrid air purifier.

The unique-looking LG SIGNATURE washing machine is an advanced version of the LG TWIN Wash™ but with more sophisticated and convenient featurese. The minimalistic design of the LG SIGNATURE washing machine is highlighted by the touch-enabled Quick Circle User Interface embedded in the glass door at a 17-degree angle for easy viewing when standing. The Push Open washing machine door makes accessing the interior easy even when carrying a full load of laundry. The sleek and sophisticated-looking enamel coating also repels fingerprints and corrosion.

The LG SIGNATURE refrigerator represents the visualization of fundamentals with a fresh take that is both intuitive and evolutionary. As a nod to its innovative spirit, LG has taken its award-winning Door-in-Door™ design one step further by adding a Knock-On Door-in-Door™ feature that makes the tinted Door-in-Door™ compartment transparent with a simple tap. Approach the refrigerator with arms full of groceries and the advanced refrigerator automatically opens the door for you for easy access to the interior.

The LG SIGNATURE air purifier is a must-have appliance for those who take air quality in their homes seriously. Watch the air as it’s being cleaned through the visually- transparent panel. Equipped with an advanced Aqua-Cyclone feature and LG’s Smart PM1.0 Indicator, the air purifier removes odors as well as dust as small as one micrometer from the air in your home.

Centum System™: Enhanced Durability and Energy Efficiency

LG equipped the Centum System™ washing machine and refrigerator with core technologies to meet the requirements of consumers who demand both durability and high energy efficiency from their home appliances. The washing machine’s Inverter Direct Drive and the refrigerator’s Inverter Linear Compressor create significantly less internal friction, resulting in greater reliability and durability, backed by LG’s 20-year warranty.

The Centum System™ washing machine does away with traditional springs that support the outer tub by utilizing a new damping system equipped with shock absorbers, similar to those found in automobiles. This fixed-tub system significantly reduces vibration and noise levels and boasts one of the quietest spin cycles on the market. A 12kg load of laundry spinning at 1400 RPM emits only 67dB, equivalent to the noise level of a typical conversation.1 The washing machine also delivers an exceptional energy efficiency rating of A+++-60%.

The LG Centum System™ refrigerator also breaks new ground with an energy efficiency rating. The Centum System™ refrigerator is offered in two different styles, a bottom-freezer model which delivers an energy grade rating of up to A+++ -20 percent and a side-by-side model which offers a A+++-10 percent rating.

SmartThinQ™: Improving Smart Home Automation

LG has made significant contributions to the burgeoning smart home market with the introduction of the SmartThinQ™ sensor. This useful device can be placed on traditional appliances to alert users via their smartphones when the washing machine has completed a cycle or when a refrigerator door has been left ajar, among a variety of other uses. To complement the SmartThinQ™ sensor and LG’s wide range of smart appliances, LG developed the SmartThinQ™ Hub to gather information and communicate with SmartThinQ™ sensors and smart appliances, even to play music through its built-in speaker. LG’s SmartThinQ™ Hub is compatible with the standards put forward by the AllJoyn® Alliance, an open source framework that promotes the development of IoT technologies, collaborative business partnerships and cross-industry initiatives.

InnoFest Europe 2016 will also showcase advanced refrigerators such as the new Side-by-Side and Bottom-Freezer models, being introduced to the European market for the first time, along with a new lineup of attractive microwaves and air-care products. Exciting products such as CordZero™ HOM-BOT Turbo+ with augmented reality technology and the upgraded LG Styler, which uses the power of steam to reduce wrinkles and odors on clothes, will make their European debut at the show.

“InnoFest Europe is an opportunity for LG to bring our diverse collection of home appliances to the region where our partners and stakeholders can get familiar with our newest products up close,” said Jo Seong-jin, CEO and president of the LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “LG has made great gains in Europe with the continued support of our business partners and we want to demonstrate to our supporters that together, we can continue to lead the global home appliance market.”

HOUSE OF CARDS BUILT ON RUNNING LG WASHING MACHINE BREAKS GUINNESS RECORD

LG’s Centum System™ Eliminates Almost All Vibration and Noise

The record-breaking 3.3-meter tall hose of card build atop an activated LG Centum System™ washing machine

SEOUL, Apr. 7, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) and professional card stacker Bryan Berg set a new world record for the tallest house of cards built in 12 hours. More incredible is that the record-breaking 3.3 meter tall structure was built atop an LG Centum washing machine while it was spinning at 1,000 RPM. Bryan Berg, a Harvard-educated architect who began stacking cards at the age of eight, partnered with LG on his record-breaking attempt, a 48-story house constructed of only normal playing cards.

“We are thrilled for Bryan, who achieved a special goal, while also helping to highlight the technological innovations that exist in some of today’s home appliances,” said Jo Seong-jin, CEO and president of the LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solutions Company. “Appliances should no longer be viewed as noisy, disruptive machines but a home companion that can coexist unobtrusively in any kitchen. This record-breaking event was a creative way to drive this point home.”

LG’s unique Centum System™ utilizes a new damping system equipped with shock absorbers, similar to those found in automobiles. This fixed-tub system greatly reduces vibration and noise levels. By doing away with traditional springs to support the outer tub, the Centum System™ washing machine boasts one of the quietest spin cycles on the market, emitting only 67dB1, the equivalent of a typical conversation. And with less moving parts, there’s less friction, the leading cause of wear and tear in machines. LG is so confident in the technology that the Inverter Direct Drive motors in Centum System washing machines are covered by a 20-year warranty, double the industry standard.

Since its inception in 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped prevent a total of more than 2.4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. In 2015 alone, ENERGY STAR and its partners provided more than $11 billion in societal benefits due to reducing damages from climate change.

STATEMENT REGARDING MATERIAL USED IN LG G5 UNI-BODY

Contrary to erroneous reports online that the LG G5 body is composed of plastic, LG would like to state unequivocally that the uni-body casing of the G5 is composed of a special aluminum alloy, LM201 (Feb. 2016 patent pending). LM201 was developed by LG in partnership with the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology for use in high-end sports cars, aircraft and consumer electronic product where durability, rigidity and lightness are required. As a die-cast metal, LM201 was determined to be most appropriate material to accommodate the curves of the G5. After the die-casting is complete, the insulating antenna slit is applied directly to the aluminum casing followed by a coating of primer which provides additional insulation and enhances the surface profile for the “microdizing” process, where pigment containing tiny metal particles is applied directly to the primer to provide a smooth and durable finish. While both anodized aluminum and microdized aluminum will scratch if enough pressure is applied, in the case of the G5 the gray primer beneath the pigment layer may be mistaken for plastic when the coloring is scratched off. We want to reassure our customers that the uni-body of the LG G5 is advanced aluminum alloy, not plastic.

LG LEADS TOP-TIER AWARDS COUNT FROM GLOBAL DESIGN AUTHORITY RED DOT

With a Total of 32 Awards, LG Electronics Proves its Industry Leadership in Design

Red Dot’s prestigious Best of the Best award recipients, LG Electronics’ 4K OLED TV (model 65E6) and Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator (model GA- B489SADN/GA-B489TADN).

SEOUL, Mar. 30, 2016 ― LG Electronics (LG) has emerged as the clear winner in this year’s Red Dot Awards for design excellence. LG’s impressive 32 honors include two Best of the Best awards and 30 Red Dot Awards. As a recipient of double Best of the Best awards in the same year, this recognition from Red Dot confirms LG’s place at the vanguard of both technology and design leadership.

Among the products honored as setting the gold standard in design with Red Dot’s prestigious Best of the Best award were LG Electronics’ 4K OLED TV (model 65E6) and Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator (model GA- B489SADN/GA-B489TADN), helping to give LG a diverse portfolio of award winning products unmatched by any other company.

Red Dot is widely seen as one-third of the world’s top design committees, along with the iF Design Awards and IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards). This year, out of a total 5,214 products submitted from around the world, only approximately 70 products were designated Best of the Best for their innovation and design leadership.

The LG 4K OLED TV boasts a slick appearance and chic charms while maintaining the distinctive design of LG’s premium OLED televisions. Complete with the company’s unique Picture-on-Glass concept, the LG 4K OLED TV exudes an aura of class and sophistication while bridging the gap between modern trends and timeless style. Equal parts television and modern art masterpiece, the polished LG 4K OLED TV is approachable from any angle, effortlessly blending into any environment.

LG’s emphasis on forward-thinking design can also be clearly seen in its sophisticated Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator. Unlike other models that implement unwieldy bar handles that project outward from the refrigerator, the Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator features an innovative Easy Open Handle that is tucked away at the bottom of the door, making it almost completely imperceptible. The refrigerator’s stylish trim is also equipped with refined mood lighting, making the doors easy to open at all hours of the day.

In addition to its two Best of the Best awards, LG received 30 additional honors from the judges at Red Dot. The LG SIGNATURE Refrigerator was honored for its Knock-On Door-in-Door™ and Auto Door Open features while the LG SIGNATURE Washer was recognized for its double load capability as well as its touch-enabled user interface in its glass door. Judges were also impressed by the LG SIGNATURE Air Purifier with its transparent window that allows users to watch the air purifying process at work. The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV was also honored, with judges citing its ultra-thin 2.57 mm glass panel and other luxurious elements. The LG G5 smartphone, featuring a sleek, metal uni-body with a Slide-out Battery and Modular Type design, also received honors along with three LG “Friends” (360 VR, 360 CAM, TONE Platinum), a collection of companion devices.

“We are extremely honored to receive these prestigious awards for our efforts to drive design innovation in consumer electronics and appliances,” said Noh Chang-ho, head of LG Electronics’ corporate design center. “LG is committed to design excellence and these awards are affirmation that we are on the right track.”

As demonstrated at its unveiling at Mobile World Congress last month in Barcelona, LG G5 is a showcase of cutting-edge technologies and rich features thoughtfully designed deliver a more playful user experience. MWC attendees seemed to agree with the philosophy behind the G5 as the device walked away with a record 33 awards including Best New Smartphone at MWC 2016 from the GSMA’s Glomo Awards, the mobile industry’s longest established awards platform for innovation, excellence and achievement.

“Since MWC, LG G5 and Friends have captured the imagination of consumers everywhere with its engaging take on mobile technology,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Modularity has been talked about for years but no one was able to consumerize it until now and we’re happy to take on the mantle.”

Engagement comes in the form of dual 78- and 135-degree camera lenses for ultra wide angle shots, an AOD (always-on display) that requires no button-pressing to get the latest information and Dolby Digital Plus and 7.1 channel audio for cinema-style sound that delivers dialogue and nuanced effects clearly even in loud environments. LG G5 also supports IFTTT (If This Then That), a smart solution that allows users to create a series of action programs called recipes to boost productivity and efficiency.

LG simplified the graphical user interface with a simple, flat look while applying a bright color combination and a semi-transparent blur effect to the GUI. In addition, animation and feedback effects are choreographed at the right moments to deliver a playful and enjoyable experience (https://youtu.be/WqJvMtkmyZI).

The following companion devices, or Friends, will be available in select markets at the time of the G5 rollout or soon after:

  • CAM Plus
  • LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY (with pouch)
  • 360 VR
  • 360 CAM (with case)

INTRODUCING A MORE PLAYFUL AND INNOVATIVE LG UX 5.0

Easily Control LG Friends with User-centric Features for a More Playful Mobile Lifestyle

A person is holding the LG G5 in front of various screens that show off the new LG UX 5.0

SEOUL, Mar. 28, 2016 — With the imminent consumer rollout of the new LG G5, LG Electronics (LG) will also be introducing a new version of its mobile user interface, LG UX 5.0. Designed for a more playful and innovative mobile experience, LG UX 5.0 will offer advanced features and greater convenience not only for LG G5 users but owners of upcoming smartphone models as well.

Based on Android’s latest Marshmallow OS, LG UX 5.0 conveys LG’s philosophy on the future of mobiles. LG UX 5.0 is an enjoyable, enhanced and user-centric UX that supports easy connection for optimal control of LG Friends and delivers a more convenient and powerful experience by adding new functions that allow users to enjoy the G5 to its maximum potential.

“We analyzed the lifestyle of smartphone users to provide a superior mobile experience and greatly expanded the usability with LG UX 5.0,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG UX 5.0 and G5 were designed to provide an innovative user experience that reflects the needs of our most demanding customers.”

An Enjoyable UX for Connecting with LG Friends

The highlight of LG UX 5.0 is LG Friends Manager, a versatile application that enables users to easily connect with and control the modules and accessories known as LG Friends. LG Friends Manager intuitively detects nearby accessories for easy pairing with LG G5, easily downloading and installing all the required apps from the Google Play Store. No hassles, no hunting. With LG Friends Manager, the process of connecting the LG G5 to its Friends couldn’t get any easier.

LG Friends Manager generates a different display for each LG Friend. When paired with the 360 CAM, the screen on the G5 will display photo previews and the available shooting modes. The Friends Camera Album in the Gallery enables users to categorize and manage images captured with LG Friends such as 360 CAM and Rolling Bot.

An Enhanced UX for a Powerful Visual Experience

The greatest advantage of LG UX 5.0 is its enhanced support for LG G5’s extremely powerful camera. Image and video capturing has never been so enjoyable with features such as:

Zoom In & Out – Seamlessly switch between the standard 78-degree lens to the 135-degree wide angle lens by simply pinching the screen.

Auto Shot – An enhanced version of Gesture Shot, take the perfect selfies with this smart feature which triggers the shutter as soon as the users’ face is recognized.

Multi View – Captures different angles of images at the same exact moment using the front and rear cameras of the G5 and the LG 360 CAM.

360 Wallpaper – Images taken with the LG 360 CAM can be displayed as a 360 panorama, shifting in sync with movements of the G5.

Pop-out Picture – Combine two images taken simultaneously with the standard and wide angle lens to create a picture-in-a-frame effect.

Film Effect – Raise the level of effects with this set of filters that deliver an “analog” feel to photos. Use Camera Preview to preview and change a filter on the fly before taking the shot.

A User-Centric UX for Greater Convenience

LG refined its user interface and included several new smart features on LG UX 5.0 to enhance usability and convenience, such as:

New Home – LG combined its Home Screen with the App Drawer in LG UX 5.0 to simplify the user experience. Users who prefer the traditional style can download the Home & App Drawer directly from the settings menu on the LG G5.

LG Health – Upgraded for UX 5.0, LG Health provides a Beginner as well as Advanced mode matched to the user’s profile. Start with Beginner and switch to Advanced once your activities reach a certain level, staying motivated along the way with visual details of your progress.

AOD (always-on display) – Avoid the hassle of turning on the smartphone display just to check the time. With AOD (always-on display), all your key information including the date, notifications and SMS icon are displayed on the screen at all times.

Smart Doctor – Keep your G5 performing at its optimal level with solutions and tips based on your usage habits.

World Clock – Enhanced with an attractive graphical user interface, this smart clock displays the time in selected cities around the world and immediately syncs them to whatever local time you set for easy scheduling of phone calls and meetings.

File Manager – Navigate the G5 as easily as navigating your PC with direct access to any folders or files indicated by the directory path at top. Use the new search filter to find documents, videos and images anywhere on your G5.

Quick Help – Find answers to any questions about the G5 quickly and easily or request feedback by e-mail.

LG Backup – Use LG Backup and NFC to restore conveniently from other Android phones and now record conversations from your favorite messenger app.

Diverse Security Method – In addition to LG’s familiar Knock Code, accurate fingerprint recognition is now built into LG UX 5.0 to provide added convenience and security.
