LG AND VOLKSWAGEN COMMIT TO JOINTLY DEVELOP CONNECTED CAR PLATFORM

Leaders in Electronics and Automotive Partner to
Drive Innovation in the Connected Car Market

Logo of LG Electronics

SEOUL, July 6, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) and Volkswagen AG have entered into a memorandum of understanding signaling their commitment to cooperate on the research and development of a next-generation connected car service platform.

Key LG executives present at the signing at Volkswagen HQ in Wolfsburg, Germany included Richard Choi, head of LG Cloud Center, Lee Sang-yong, head of LG Vehicle Infotainment System Research Lab. Representing Volkswagen were Prof. Thomas Form, head of Electronics and Vehicle Research and Robert Kattner, head of Vehicle Information Systems Research.

The two companies will work together to develop Volkswagen’s Cross-Over-Platform to enhance vehicle connectivity and convenience. Using the latest in cloud technology, the goal of the new platform is to offer drivers a seamless digital life with access to features such as smart home services and location based services from their vehicles

Over the course of the next few years, LG and Volkswagen will collaborate to:

  • Develop technologies that bring together the connected car and the smart home, giving drivers the ability to control and monitor smart devices in their homes — such as lights, security systems and household supplies — from the road.
  • Develop a notification center that understands context and delivers notices in an intuitive and safe manner and also provides optimized recommendations for drivers to respond based on real-time situations.
  • Develop optimized next generation infotainment technology for connected cars.

“Volkswagen is pressing on with the digitalization of its brands,” said Professor Form at the official signing of the agreement. “Our focus in doing so is always on our customers. For them, comfort, safety and energy efficiency play a central role. LG is a strong, reliable partner in the implementation of new features and one of the drivers of innovation in the networked household. We look forward to working with LG and to developing in future simple, easy-to-use smart home solutions for our customers integrated into our vehicle systems.”

“LG Electronics and Volkswagen are teaming up to develop the next generation of connected car platform that allows wide integration with smart home services and adoption of open IoT connectivity technologies,” said Richard Choi, head of the LG Cloud Center. “We think LG’s expertise in smart technology together with Volkswagen’s leadership in the automotive space will revolutionize the way drivers interact with their vehicles.”

This latest agreement is an example of the long and mutually beneficial relationship LG and Volkswagen have developed over decades. LG was one of the first electronics companies to commit itself to the automotive industry with the launch of its Vehicle Components division in July 2013. Even before then, LG has been working closely with Volkswagen since 2007, supplying advanced audio-visuals products for vehicles and establishing a reputation for reliability and technological innovation.

In March in 2015, Volkswagen subsidiary Italdesign Guigiaro unveiled its GEA concept car at the Geneva Motor Show with seven key components supplied by LG Electronics, including the holographic display, connected smart watch, rear lamp and camera. In July, LG was selected as Volkswagen’s strategic electronics supplier and also listed as a partner company on its FAST (Future Automotive Supply Tracks) program. At CES earlier this year, the two companies successfully demonstrated an advanced smart home service that could be controlled remotely from a vehicle.

LG IMPRESSES AGAIN AT INTERSOLAR EUROPE WITH NEON 2 BIFACIAL

Capable of Absorbing Rays From Any Angle, LG’s New Solar Solution
Receives Prestigious Award for Record-Setting Third Time

LG receives its third consecutive Intersolar Award for its new innovative NeON™ 2 BiFacial solar module at Intersolar Europe 2016, Munich, Germany.

SEOUL, June 24, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) received its third consecutive Intersolar Award for its new innovative NeON™ 2 BiFacial solar module at Intersolar Europe this week in Munich, Germany. LG first received the award with the Mono X NeON in 2013 and again in 2015 for the NeON 2.

The NeON 2 BiFacial is the company’s most efficient premium solar module to date. While conventional solar modules have opaque backside, the NeON 2 BiFacial features transparent materials on both sides. This allows backside of the panel to collect light reflected from the ground and greatly boosts overall efficiency. The panel’s front side alone is capable of generating up to 310W and under optimal conditions, the energy gathering capabilities of the rear panel increase power generation by an additional maximum 30 percent. The total power generated by each panel puts the NeON™ 2 BiFacial in the same range as 400W high generation modules.

Featuring LG Electronics’ innovative Cello Technology™, NeON 2 BiFacial minimizes energy loss by diversifying electrical paths. Typical solar panels have only three electrical paths but Cello Technology™ replaces those with 12 thin wires to allow electric current to flow more freely and efficiently. The advanced solar modules are particularly effective when installed on skyscraper rooftops and near freeways as sound absorbing walls because it can be installed vertically.

“This award symbolizes LG’s commitment to developing innovative, world-leading solar technologies,” said Lee Chung-ho, senior vice president and head of LG’s Solar Business Division. “Having set new standards in the solar industry, LG will continue to lead the global market with its top-of–the-line, high efficiency solar solutions.”

First held in 1991, Intersolar Europe is the world’s largest exhibition for the solar industry. This year, over 1,000 companies from around the world presented their latest solar energy innovations and products to a global audience.

LG OLED TV BRINGS NORTHERN LIGHTS TO ICELAND THIS SUMMER

Including Online Promotion for Fans to Win Tickets to Reykjavik Concert

LG’s HDR-enabled 4K OLED TV displaying the Aurora Borealis.

SEOUL, June 21, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) is kicking off a campaign to make the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, visible to audiences around the globe in the most unique way — via its cutting-edge HDR-enabled 4K OLED TVs. LG will showcase the OLED Aurora Borealis at an event in Reykjavik, Iceland kicking off with a concert featuring, Icelandic musicians, on July 20, followed by a four-month photo exhibition portraying the beauty of Iceland on LG OLED TVs.

The Northern Lights cannot be observed in Iceland from April to August due to the midnight sun which keeps the country lit almost 24 hours a day. To give summer tourists and residents their first opportunity to view the Aurora Borealis during the summer months, LG has invited nearly one thousand guests to the Lights Out, Stars On concert where the hometown Icelandic musicians will perform. For one night only, the award-winning Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, with its glass panels resembling the elegant Picture-on-Glass of LG SIGNATURE OLED TV will feature 40 large OLED TVs installed in an array to display the Icelandic night sky on their perfectly black screens. Contestants will have the opportunity to win tickets to the concert and an all-expenses paid Reykjavik travel package. Competition details can be found at www.facebook.com/lgtv.

The campaign will also feature a photography exhibition displaying images of scenic Icelandic landscapes and night skies on LG OLED TVs. Captured by a number of talented Icelandic photographers, the images showing the natural beauty of the heavens and the Earth will be displayed in a whole new perspective on the perfect surfaces of LG OLED TVs. The photo exhibition will run from July 20 until November 20 in Harpa Concert Hall.

Throughout the campaign, LG has worked closely with award-winning Icelandic writer and activist Andri Magnason. Also joining will be professional astrophotographer Sean Parker, who has created original works of art depicting the beautiful Aurora-filled night skies of Iceland. Popular tech YouTuber Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox Therapy will serve as creative director for the campaign.

During the 2006 Aurora Borealis viewing season, Icelandic poet and novelist Andri Magnason suggested that the city of Reykjavik come together to make the beauty of the night sky visible within the city for the first time. Magnason wanted the people of Reykjavik to see the northern lights and stars against a completely black backdrop. Just as eliminating light pollution allowed the people of Reykjavik to see the lights in all their glory, the pitch black backdrop of OLED TVs heightens the contrast and delivers richer images. LG OLED TVs feature individually illuminated pixels, eliminating the need for image-distorting LED backlights. Without this backlight, OLED TVs are capable of displaying perfect black images alongside bright, lifelike colors.

“LG has been an innovator in TV technology for the last 50 years and this drive to create the best display has culminated in today’s OLED TV,” said Brian Kwon, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “By accurately capturing the beauty of Iceland’s Northern Lights, residents and tourists alike will be able to experience the magic of nature as only LG OLED TV makes possible.”

The concert and photo exhibition will take place at the award-winning Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik. Tickets are available at www.tix.is/en/event/2973/lights-out-stars-on.

LG PROTECTS UNSUSPECTING SHOPPERS FROM COUNTERFEIT TONE BLUETOOTH STEREO HEADSETS

U.S. Federal Court Stops 22 Defendants Manufacturing,
Selling Knock-Off LG TONE Headsets; LG Seeks USD 194 Million in Damages

LG-logo

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., June 9, 2016 — A federal court in the United States granted a restraining order against 22 defendants, barring them from manufacturing, distributing, and selling knock-offs of LG Electronics’ popular LG TONE Bluetooth headsets.

To protect unsuspecting consumers who may unknowingly buy what they think is the latest LG TONE Bluetooth stereo headset, LG sued nearly two dozen companies selling counterfeit versions of the product. LG’s suit seeks nearly USD 200 million in damages, a permanent injunction, attorneys’ fees, and other relief the court believes appropriate.

LG’s TONE Bluetooth headsets are the product category leader, having created the neckband Bluetooth headsets product space with its highly unique and distinctive looking design which is a stark departure from prior Bluetooth configured devices.

The court order prohibits all further sales of counterfeit and knock-off LG TONE headsets by the named defendants to unsuspecting shoppers. The infringing products at issue were largely sold by foreign companies through various digital online marketplaces and platforms.

“Thousands of shoppers simply looking to purchase an LG headset have been duped and victimized by companies cashing in on makeshift and second-rate headsets,” said Morris Lee, president of LG Electronics MobileComm USA and head of North America Mobile Business. “To prevent the further exploitation of consumers, LG is going after the companies attempting to take advantage of shoppers as well as the tremendous popularity of the TONE headsets.”

LG also plans to pursue legal actions against vendors advertising and selling “liquidated” LG TONE products without truthfully disclosing to consumers that such products are not “new,” are often damaged, marred, refurnished, or repaired, and not covered by LG’s warranties, product guaranties, and product return policies.

“Other lawsuits and actions are in the works as LG works to protect unassuming shoppers,” Lee said. “This includes both large-scale actions, such as the current suit, as well as targeted suits against those products that blatantly infringe our design patent rights and product configuration trademark rights.”

RGBW GETS NOD OF APPROVAL FROM INDUSTRY GROUP FOR 4K ULTRA HD PICTURE STANDARD

Endorsement Puts an End to Dispute Over
the Format’s Exact Image Rendering Capabilities

A front view of LG RGBW 4K UHD TV.

SEOUL, June 1, 2016 — Last week in San Francisco, California, the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM) convened and officially recognized the RGBW TV format as meeting all the required qualifications for rendering 4K Ultra HD images. The ICDM’s recognition of RGBW as true 4K follows the organization’s conclusion that the same display assessment standards for RGB can apply to other advanced subpixel architectures such as RGBY and PenTile®, putting to rest the confusion over the exact capabilities of RGBW.

In Status of Pixels and Subpixel Rendering for Resolution Measurements (www.icdm-sid.org/updates/Docs/7p0-01-20160524.pdf), the ICDM writes:

It has been shown that the principles laid down in the International Display Measurement Standard (IDMS) can be successfully applied to measurement of the resolution of displays with flexible pixel arrangements. One way to cope with the existing conflicts of the IDMSv1p03b is to give up thinking in terms of pixels, and to start thinking in terms of subpixels instead. This is often referred to as subpixel rendering. The determination of line widths should also be done in terms of subpixels. As soon as the width of the moving window used for averaging of luminance profiles is not taken from ill-defined subpixel-to-pixel relationships, the procedure for determination of visual display resolution becomes straightforward and transparent.

The ICDM also made it a requirement for resolution tests to specify the contrast modulation value in verification documents. Contrast modulation is measured as a way to verify product compliance with resolution standards. According to the IDMS (International Display Measurement Standard), contrast modulation is the difference in brightness between each adjacent line in a horizontal and vertical grid of lines emitting light and color on the screen to create images, not the display resolution.

“We believe the ICDM’s recognition of the flexible pixel arrangement and subpixel rendering as being suitable for the measurement of resolution will bring confidence to consumers regarding 4K picture quality when they purchase UHD TVs based on RGBW technology,” said Brian Kwon, President and CEO at LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

LG TO DEMO HIGH HDR CAPABILITIES OF OLED TV AT SES ASTRA INDUSTRY DAY

Demo to Coincide with Launch of SES Ultra HD Test Channel Displaying Hybrid Log Gamma HDR Content

Officials of LG, BBC and SES pose in front of an LG OLED TV at the ninth SES Industry Days conference in Luxembourg.

SEOUL, May 27, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) is collaborating with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and satellite operator SES. to host a demonstration of High Dynamic Range (HDR) broadcast technologies at the ninth SES Industry Days conference this week in Luxembourg.

High quality HDR content will be transmitted to LG’s latest OLED TV via live satellite feed utilizing backward compatible HLG (hybrid log gamma) technology. HLG expands the contrast ratio and color reproduction capability of SDR TVs (Standard Dynamic Range). The HDR transmission demonstration by LG and the BBC will utilize SES Astra’s satellite network.

HLG technology was developed by the BBC and NHK to enable a backwards compatible transmission of HDR content. Employing a single distribution bit stream which can be decoded by both dedicated HDR receivers and legacy non-HDR receivers, the HLG system requires no production metadata, making it compatible with existing broadcast infrastructure, thereby enabling a straightforward migration to HDR television production.

The flexibility of the BBC’s innovative HDR HLG technology makes it an excellent choice for broadcast HDR services while SES’s new HDR test channel allows industry partners to test a variety of new display standards and content. Viewed on LG’s OLED TVs, HDR HLG content looks more realistic, delivers greater depth and the deepest blacks. As the first flat-panel television with infinite contrast ratio and no backlight panels, LG OLED TVs are unrivaled in their ability to deliver an HDR experience like no other.

“LG has been at the forefront of television innovation for decades,” said Wayne Park, executive vice president and head of LG’s European operations. “We are committed to supporting the efforts of our partners to standardize HDR broadcast technologies and make advanced display technology more widely available.”

LG ANNOUNCES STARTUP INITIATIVE BY SPINNING OFF TWO PROJECTS

Fostering a Creative Culture Outside the Corporate Environment

A man uses art streaming platform, Acanvas, to connect his phone to one of its cord-free customizable digital frames, while a woman oversees with a smile on her face

SEOUL, May 16, 2016 ― LG Electronics (LG) is taking its “open innovation” strategy to the next level by spinning off of two initiatives originally incubated in-house: Acanvas and Infit & Company Inc. While LG will provide use of the patented technology, both companies will be managed completely by former LG employees and will be responsible for their own fundraising and strategy.

Acanvas will focus on developing its art streaming platform into a viable business. The art streaming platform contains millions of licensed works of art displayed in cord-free customizable digital frames. Acanvas just started a Kickstarter campaign (http://bit.ly/1rYG7vj) last week to fund its completion of development. Acanvas will initially target North America with plans to expand to other markets next year.

Infit & Company Inc. is the company behind the Imaging Modular Diagnosis Machine, a medical product which employs the latest technologies to diagnose conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. By using an affordable and safer optical imaging system instead of radiation to peer inside patients, Infit & Company Inc. hopes to revolutionize medical care.

To show its support for the venture and to alleviate a major risk associated with startups, LG has promised employees who join either of the two new companies that they will have guaranteed positions at LG if they should decide to return within three years. What’s more, LG will expand its initiatives to encourage more of the type of thinking that led to the formation of Acanvas and Infit. LG’s Idea Power Plant is one program LG has developed to identify and fund with up to 10 million Korean won the most promising employee-generated ideas that can be commercialized within five months.

“For us at LG, open innovation shouldn’t just be a motto, it should be actionable as well,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CTO of LG Electronics. “By giving these two startups their own identity and freedom from the bureaucracies of a large organization, we are sending a very clear message to innovator and the public that we are not interested in maintaining the status quo.”
