Beating Canadian Record by One Hour

Five participants and their supporters pose for a photo with their new Guinness World Records certificate.

SEOUL, March 23, 2016 — Five young Austrians broke a 15-month old Canadian record by one hour when they successfully endured a 92-hour TV watching marathon in Vienna from March 15-19.

An official from Guinness World Records was present to confirm the record breaking event and presented certificates to the five new record holders, who were selected from more than 400 interested applicants on LG’s Facebook page. In addition to the certificate, LG presented each participant with a new TV and a complimentary 12-month subscription to Sky Austria.

The five participants – Zivan Pajkanovic (23), Nadine Pauser (20), Johannes Spilka (19), Markus Waldl (24) and Dominik Zeller (24) – watched various Sky Austria programs on LG OLED TVs continuously for four nights and five days, taking only one five-minute break every hour. LG Electronics (LG), the sponsor of the record attempt, constructed a living room-style studio at a popular furniture store on the city’s most visited shopping street equipping it with reclining chairs, stationary bicycle, refrigerator and most importantly, a 55-inch LG OLED TV.

“We are extremely pleased that our record attempt was successful,” said Markus Werner, marketing manager at LG Electronics Austria. “OLED TVs offer a superior viewing experience which I’m sure made this record attempt more enjoyable for the participants. We congratulate these five dedicated TV watchers for their accomplishment.”

SEOUL, Mar. 22, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) will launch its X series, a mass-tier smartphone lineup with premium features until now only available on LG’s flagship models, starting this week. The X screen and X cam will first be available in South Korea followed by key markets worldwide including Europe, Latin America and Asia.

The X series is designed to deliver exceptional value to those who want a smartphone with unique features such as Dual Cameras or the Second Screen. Like the LG G5, the X cam inherits a similar 120-degree wide angle lens to complement the standard lens. The 13MP standard angle lens and the 5MP wide angle camera on the rear of the X cam delivers as wide a field of view as the human eye.

The X cam offers Pop-out Picture feature which combines the two images taken with the standard and wide angle lenses to create a picture-in-a-frame effect. Available only on the X cam, Animated Photo delivers a hybrid video and still photo, one framed by the other (http://on.fb.me/1pPxEd5). And Panorama View automatically scrolls a wide image instead of a static image and the Signature feature allows users to add a caption or byline after taking a photo.

The X screen comes with LG’s Second Screen, a feature which was first introduced in the LG V10. The AOD (always-on display) allows users to check basic information such as time, date and notifications without having to wake up the phone, the first mid-tier smartphone to offer this unique feature. The X screen’s look is complemented by the crystal-clear glass fiber material that covers the back. The curved edges on its sides create a simple yet elegant design.

“What’s appealing about the X screen and X cam is that each offers one great feature in a complete package that doesn’t break the bank,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Starting with the X series, we’re introducing the best in camera and display technology in a mass-tier device, something that has never been done before.”

LG STYLUS 2 FIRST SMARTPHONE TO SUPPORT DAB+

World’s First Smartphone with Digital Audio Broadcasting
Delivers Crisp, Clear Digital Radio for Free

The right side, font and back view of the LG Stylus 2 in Brown

SEOUL, Mar. 14, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled the world’s first smartphone to feature DAB+, the de facto standard for digital radio broadcasting. LG introduced its newest smartphone at Radiodays Europe 2016 in Paris, the world’s largest radio conference. Consumers in Australia, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom will be the first to receive the LG Stylus 2 with DAB+.

As the world’s first smartphone with DAB+, the LG Stylus 2 features a DAB+ chipset and an exclusive app that allows customers to enjoy digital radio broadcasts out of the box. A technical interface also enables broadcasters to develop their own tailored apps in which internet services complement broadcasted radio.

Users will be able to access more radio channels with DAB+ than traditional FM. Unlike regular radio apps that stream large amounts of data, DAB+ radio provides excellent audio quality for free, as it uses no data.

DAB+ is expected to replace FM analog radio and already reaches over 500 million people in 40 countries around the world. LG collaborated with the International DMB Advancement Group (IDAG) to include DAB+ technology in the new LG Stylus 2.

“We are taking a proactive approach towards the fast-paced technological shift to digital broadcasting with DAB+ to deliver a new paradigm of experiences through the smartphone,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With its large 5.7-inch screen, 1 watt speaker and 3,000mAh removable battery, the LG Stylus 2 is the perfect device to enjoy rich, multimedia content.”

“We are proud to help introduce a game-changing smartphone with an innovative company like LG. The combination of broadcasting and the internet opens up a vast array of possibilities for the future,” said Gunnar Garfors, president of IDAG. “Consumers get new functionalities and media companies reach new audiences with more broadcasted free-to-air radio.”

SEOUL, Mar. 11, 2016 ― LG Electronics’ Vehicle Components Company and LG Chem received GM’s prestigious Overdrive Award on March 10 at the 2015 Supplier of the Year event held at the Cobo Center in Detroit. LG was recognized by General Motors (GM) for its work supplying innovative automotive technology and vehicle components toward its electric vehicle (EV) efforts.

Overdrive Awards are bestowed by a panel of experts from GM’s purchasing, engineering, quality control, manufacturing and logistics teams every year to the company’s top four partners. Winners are based on the level and quality of technical innovation, product quality and competitive pricing.

LG has had a long standing partnership with GM, supplying the company with batteries for GM’s first generation Volt in 2010, as well as the 2014 Spark EV and the all new Bolt EV. This partnership has been solidified with GM selecting LG Chem as Supplier of the Year for six consecutive years. LG Chem’s close partnership with GM was highlighted in 2010 when the LG company was honored by GM with the title, Corporation of the Year.

“We are extremely honored to receive this award as we believe it demonstrates the effectiveness of our long-term partnership with GM,” said Lee Woo-jong, President and CEO of the LG Electronic Vehicle Components Company. “Since establishing the Vehicle Components Company in 2013, LG has been very lucky to partner with world-class companies such as GM.”

WITH LG 360 CAM AND GOOGLE STREET VIEW, SHARE AND ENJOY 360-DEGREE CONTENT WITH EASE

Compatible with Google Street View Content Standard, LG’s New G5-Friendly

The front view of the LG G5 and the LG 360 CAM, both in Silver

SEOUL, Mar. 3, 2016 — With the announcement of the LG 360 CAM at Mobile World Congress last week, LG Electronics (LG) expects to see an increase in interest in creating and sharing 360-degree visual content using mobile devices. With the introduction of affordable, consumer-friendly devices such as the upcoming LG 360 CAM and the G5 smartphone, creating and sharing 360-degree content will be as easy as pressing a button.

While many phones and point-and-shoot cameras have a panorama mode, 360-degree spherical images and videos take visuals even further by including everything in the scene, including the ground and the sky. With its compact, portable size and high-resolution images, the LG 360 CAM is one of the first imaging devices to take advantage of the growing trend of 360-degree content creation. In fact, this is the first camera from a smartphone manufacturer to be optimized for Google Street View with its support for the Google-backed Open Spherical Camera (OSC) API.

With the free Google Street View app installed on their iOS or Android smartphones, LG 360 CAM owners will be able to easily capture, upload and share their 360-degree content directly from their phones without having to convert or process their files into the appropriate format, a time-consuming process. LG 360 CAM features three embedded microphones and supports 5.1 channel surround sound recording. It is equipped with an internal battery with a capacity of 1,200mAh allowing for up to 70 minutes of video recording. With its microSD card slot, the camera can be extended to a maximum of 2TB.

“This announcement of the LG 360 CAM means a lot to over 500 million Street View users and all who loves to create and share 360-degree contents,” said Charles Armstrong, Product Manager of Google Street View. “With its capability to create 16MP images, the LG 360 CAM will be the most preferable choice for anyone to join in the fun of 360-degree content.”

“Until recently, creating 360-degree images and videos required expensive and heavy equipment out of the reach of everyday consumers,” said Kim Hong-joo, Vice President and Head of product planning at LG Mobile Communications Company. “LG 360 CAM will enable users to create their own content easily and share them freely in a way that nurtures a new mobile ecosystem within the LG Playground.”

Key Specifications:

  • Camera: 13MP Sensor x 2 (output pixel count 16MP)
  • Capture Modes: 360-degree Spherical / 180-degree Hemispherical
  • Size: 40 x 97 x 25mm (without cap)

LG and Intel Develop and Pilot 5G Telematics Technology for Next Generation Cars

Working Together to Take a Leading Role in Advancing the Automobile

The logo of LG Electronics and Intel to commemorate a new partnership toward 5G TELEMATICS TECHNOLOGY FOR NEXT GENERATION CARS

BARCELONA, Feb. 22, 2016 — At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, LG Electronics (LG) and Intel announced that they are collaborating to develop and pilot 5G-based telematics technology, the next generation of wireless technology for cars. LG and Intel will utilize research and development expertise and leadership from both companies with the intent to be first to market with 5G ready solutions. LG is the first company to supply telematics products that rely on LTE connectivity instead of older 2G or 3G based networks.

5G telematics delivers data more than 33 times faster than 4G LTE with latency expected to drop to about one tenth of current speeds. Software can be updated at high speeds through OTA (over-the-air) networks while videos and other multimedia content will see faster downloads through the car’s infotainment systems.

Powered by V2X (Vehicle to Everything) technology, 5G’s dramatically reduced latency is possible even when cars are travelling at high speeds. Communication from vehicle to vehicle, vehicle to infrastructure or vehicle to pedestrian through 5G can help prevent accidents for a safer driving experience.

By bringing together its potent Mobile Communications technology with the insight of its Vehicle Components division, LG has made significant strides to solidify its telematics leadership in the smart car industry. LG is the exclusive supplier of vehicle telematics for GM’s 4G LTE OnStar telematics system which has helped LG take the top position in automotive telematics with a market share of 30.1 percent in 2013, 30.3 percent in 2014 and 29.9 percent in 2015, according to Strategy Analytics.

“By working closely with Intel we hope to build upon our leadership with LG’s next generation of 5G telematics products,” said Kim Jin-yong, President of LG Electronics’ Vehicle Components In-Vehicle Infotainment Business Unit.

“LG is an important vehicle component supplier for the joint research and development of 5G telematics”, said Aicha Evans, corporate vice president and general manager of the Intel Communication and Devices Group. “We believe the combination of LG connectivity leadership and Intel expertise in connected cars, sensor fusion and distributed deep learning will deliver innovative 5G technology for the car.”
