LG STRENGTHENS FULL LED PROJECTOR LINEUP WITH BLUETOOTH CONNECTIVITY

Market-Leading Minibeam Projectors Enhanced with Bluetooth and Slimmer Design

A front view of the LG Minibeam series models PW1000, PH550 and PW1500, with matching cases.

SEOUL, Dec. 9, 2015 — Marking seven consecutive years as the leading LED projector manufacturer¹ , LG Electronics (LG) is set to further distinguish its Minibeam series of projectors at CES 2016. The three newest projectors in the Minibeam series (models PH550, PW1000, PW1500) have the distinction of featuring both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity for unparalleled freedom and viewing convenience. And improving on the one-hand grip design of previous Minibeam projectors, LG’s new 2016 models have been slimmed down even further for easier portability and convenience.

The all-new compact PH550 eliminates the need for all wires thanks to its triple wire-free connectivity, a first in any projector. What this means is that users can send content to the projector from a smartphone or tablet using the Wi-Fi mirroring-enabled Screen Share, connect to speakers wirelessly via Bluetooth and unplug from the wall for 2.5 hours of viewing pleasure using the rechargeable internal battery. No other projector currently on the market offers this level of connectivity and freedom. And less than half the size of a standard A4 sheet of paper, the PH550 at 550 lumens is the brightest among LG’s battery-powered projectors.

Winner of the CES 2016 Innovation Award, the versatile PF1000U is unique in its ability to project a 100-inch image when placed only 15 inches (38 centimeters) from a wall or screen. Viewers no longer need to worry about clearing out a large area to make room for the projector or worry about walking in front of the projection beam. At just a quarter the size and one fifth the weight of the market-leading ultra short throw (UST) model, the PF1000U is the world’s first UST projector to weigh less than 2kg². Despite its small size, the Full HD PF1000U delivers a stunning 1,000 lumen brightness rating, all while consuming just a third of the power of competing units. In addition, the PF1000U operates at an ultra-low 21dB while in Eco Mode. These factors combine to make this projector by far the most advanced UST projector in the world.

For customers who prioritize picture clarity, the new PW1500 is able to render images at an astounding 1,500 lumens, the brightest in the entire LG Minibeam series. Perfect for everything from slide show presentations to theater-quality movie viewing, the PW1500 is the ideal projector for viewers who consume a wide range of content. The PW1000 with 1,000 lumens offers all the great features of the Minibeam PW1500 at a more competitive price.

“We are very excited to be introducing our newest Minibeam series to consumers at CES 2016,” said Brian Kwon, President and CEO at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “With more variety than ever before, LG Minibeam projectors offer enhanced portability with wireless connectivity for an enjoyable viewing experiencing anytime, anywhere.”

LG’s new 2016 Minibeam models will be available in key European markets and the United States in the first quarter of 2016. LG Minibeam will be on display at CES 2016 from January 6-9 in Las Vegas.

LG WINS COVETED ITALIAN DESIGN AWARD FOR DUAL DOOR-IN-DOOR™ REFRIGERATOR

Awarded Prestigious Compasso d’Oro Award in the First Year of International Participation

Two LG double Door-in-Door refrigerators with Compasso d’Oro International Award logo. Left one is closed and right one’s upper parts are opened.

SEOUL, Dec. 3, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) has been awarded the coveted Compasso d’Oro International Award for the revolutionary refrigerator design of the company’s Dual Door-in-Door™ refrigerators. The company took home the top prize in the Design Food Preparation and Instruments category.

As the oldest and most recognized award of its kind in Europe, the Compasso d’Oro (“Golden Compass”) was established in 1954 to celebrate the products that were Made in Italy. Hosted exclusively by Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI), the theme for this year’s award was Design for Food and Nutrition. The 2015 competition was the first time the award was open to competitors from outside Italy, making LG among the first foreign winner of Compasso d’Oro International. Entries were evaluated on three criteria: Innovation, Communicative Quality and Sustainability. The official awarding ceremony took place on December 2 in Milan.

LG’s Door-in-Door concept has revolutionized refrigerator design, giving users quick access to frequently sought food items, while simultaneously reducing cold air loss. LG took the initial Door-in-Door concept one step further by adding another Door-in-Door compartment to double the convenience. Door-in-Door technology reduces the amount of cold air loss by up to 47 percent 1 and with the addition of a second independent Door-in-Door compartment, cold air loss is further reduced.

But the design innovation isn’t just on the outside. Various compartments in the Dual Door-in-Doo10r™ refrigerator make organization very easy. The Family Space compartment can be accessed from the outside at the push of a button and is perfect for frequently accessed items such as snacks and drinks. The Cooking Space on the left can be opened with an Easy-Open Handle that is hidden by the bottom of the door trim and holds essential cooking ingredients such as chopped vegetables, condiments and sauces.

Expertly crafted, LG’s Dual Door-in-Door™ refrigerator also features contour-processed, tempered glass over a curved glass surface. Black patterned finishing provides a stylish design that is both aesthetically pleasing and leaves the outside fingerprint and smudge resistant.

“We are humble and honored to be one of the first international companies to receive this prestigious honor and recognition,” said Noh Chang-ho, head of LG Electronics’ Corporate Design Center. “Receiving the 2015 Compasso d’Oro International Award is a testament to LG’s design leadership in the home appliance industry.”

1 Based on testing conducted by Intertek for models SX5534WB, GR-S632GLRC and LFX3194ST/02. According to LG’s internal test method, measurements are taken for the percentage reduction in the exchange rate of air when opening the Door-in-Door™ compartment compared to the main fridge door for 10 seconds. Results may vary by models and the duration of time the door remains open.

LG TOUTS THE POWER OF OLED IN SLICK NEW CAMPAIGN

Visual Artists Help Explain OLED’s Benefits in Their Professional Lives

A left-side view of an LG OLED TV displaying a mountain scene at night.

SEOUL, Dec. 2, 2015 — LG Electronics’ (LG) latest online video campaign for OLED TVs highlights its benefits over traditional TVs and features commentary from Michael Uslan, the originator and executive producer of the Batman movie franchise and artist Kathy Klein on the benefits of OLED TV in their respective.

Having made extensive use of dark color tones on eight Batman films since 1989, Hollywood producer Michael Uslan explains the importance of differentiating between different types of black when telling a visual story. According to Uslan, the symbolic use of black as a storytelling element has a long history in cinema, and that this makes having a TV that can differentiate between shades of darkness absolutely essential to grasping the full depth of a film. Uslan praises the infinite contrast ratio of LG OLED TVs made possible by the pure black that it alone can create. Uslan says that films such as the Batman series can be experienced even more fully on OLED TVs and says, “Perfect black is the portal to perfect color.”

Renowned mandala designer Kathy Klein also highlights the benefits of OLED’s rich color palette. Famous across the world for using organic material in her artwork, Klein says that competing display formats are unable to effectively capture her art, distorting colors and designs. “Working with OLED TV was really fascinating because it was able to display my artwork distortion-free. OLED really looks natural, these displays are able to reflect the true colors of my art,” she says in the video.

Another video in the campaign, Colorful Sensation in Black, features hundreds of individuals running through a modern European cityscape garbed completely in black. Mixing elements of parkour and performance art, the runners move silently through the city, scaling walls and forming massive black backdrops that help to highlight the vibrant colors of daily life. The video encourages viewers to look at the objects that they encounter from a different perspective and helps underscore the importance of black in appreciating color.

“Since we first introduced our OLED TV lineup, personalities who work in a variety of visual mediums have praised the way OLED’s pure blacks allow for high-contrast natural color reproduction,” said Brian Kwon, President and CEO at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “With LG OLED TVs now more affordable than ever before, we encourage consumers to see for themselves what made Michael Uslan and Kathy Klein such fans of this technology.”

LG ELECTRONICS DEBUTS WORLD’S LARGEST OLED DISPLAY

One-of-a-Kind Signage Installed at Incheon International Airport
to Introduce Millions of Travellers to the Magic of OLED

A ceiling installation of LG OLED Signage displaying a city’s skyline at night on display at Incheon International Airport.

SEOUL, Nov. 19, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG), the world’s leading OLED TV manufacturer, unveiled two of the largest OLED displays in the world at South Korea’s Incheon International Airport. LG worked closely with the renowned French design firm Wilmotte & Associés to develop the massive structures which adorn the main terminal of the award-winning airport.

Each sign is composed of 140 55-inch curved OLED panels, resulting in displays that stands 13 meters high and 8 meters across, equivalent to three large-sized shipping containers. The two curved displays will feature a variety of content to demonstrate the capabilities of OLED technology, such as brilliant fireworks set against a night sky. And because every pixel in an OLED display emits its own light, there is no need for heavy LED backlighting, making both of the airport displays incredibly light and flexible, allowing them to hang from the ceiling with minimal support.

“These OLED displays perfectly complement the advanced technology that our airport has become known for,” said Park Wan-su, president and CEO at Incheon International Airport. “We are always eager to showcase to the millions of travelers every year the cutting-edge technology that originates from Korea. OLED is a prime example of that.”

“While the world’s largest OLED sign is certainly something to be proud of, we are more excited about the opportunity to introduce travelers from across the world to the magic of OLED,” said Ro Se-yong, senior vice president and head of business-to-business solutions at LG Electronics. “The benefits of OLED technology can only be viewed, they cannot be described with mere words.”

SEOUL, Nov. 3, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) was honored with the title of Brand of the Year by the prestigious Red Dot Award, one of the top design award competitions in the world. With this recognition, LG joins the ranks of renowned previous winners such as PepsiCo, Audi AG, and Mercedes-Benz. LG also becomes only the third company to win both Brand of the Year and Design Team of the Year, which LG won in 2006.

The title of Brand of the Year was bestowed on LG for its 13 wins in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design category over the course of the year. Winning entries this year include the LG G4 and LG Watch Urbane, both embodying the company’s human-centric user experience (UX) design philosophy with a simpler and more intuitive interface to accommodate individual users.

“The brand management of LG Electronics is unparalleled in its skills in this respect. The corporate claim sums it up — Life’s Good,” said Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot. “Anyone who invests in an LG product notices immediately that his or her life is a little more attractive because of it. That is exactly how convincing brand management works.”

“Being honored by Red Dot Award is humbling and demonstrates LG’s leadership in the field of design by reaffirming our ongoing commitment to both innovative design and intuitive consumer experience,” said Noh Chang-ho, vice president and head of corporate design at LG Electronics. “We will continue to design and develop creative solutions that elicit a positive emotional response and deepen the relationship between our brand and consumers to live up to our motto, Innovations for a Better Life.”

LG will be publicly honored on November 6 at the annual Red Dot Gala in Berlin and LG’s winning products can be viewed online at www.red-dot.de/cd.

American actor, writer and director Joseph Gordon-Levitt takes a picture with the LG V10

SEOUL, Oct. 30, 2015 — The LG V10, the newest smartphone from LG Electronics (LG) developed with creativity in mind, will begin to reach customers worldwide starting this week. The “ultra-smartphone” will make its debut in the United States, China and Hong Kong, followed by key markets in North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and the Commonwealth of Independent States throughout the fourth

LG’s first V Series smartphone was designed to provide a rich multimedia experience for today’s socially savvy consumers. The LG V10 offers distinctive new features such as a Second Screen, Dual Front Cameras and Manual Video Mode to make both consumption and creation of multimedia content as seamless as possible. Featuring LG’s signature removable battery (3,000mAh) and microSD card slot, the LG V10 has the distinction of being the first smartphone to meet SanDisk’s guidelines for Extreme Photo-Imaging Capabilities (EPIC) to distinguish exceptional photography and video experiences in smartphones.

As an advanced multimedia smartphone, audio quality was also given top priority consideration. The V10 plays back high-definition music via its 32 bit Hi-Fi DAC by ESS Technology, a first in a mobile device. It accomplishes this by upsampling standard-definition audio files to 32 bit Hi-Fi format. The supplied Quad Beat 3 earphones were developed in partnership with AKG Acoustics, the European manufacturer of high-end headphones, microphones and audio systems for professionals. With the latest version of LG’s Quad Beat earphones, the V10 users can enjoy richer low sounds and clearer high sounds.

Other notable highlights of the LG V10 include:

  • Second Screen, an “always-on” display above the main 5.7-inch QHD IPS Quantum Display, enhances the V10’s productiveness without impacting battery life
  • Dual Front Cameras with two separate lenses can capture standard 80 degree selfies or undistorted wide angle shots of 120 degrees
  • Manual Video Mode creates professional-quality videos by adjusting options such as shutter speed, frame rate, ISO, white balance and focus even while recording
  • Resilient Dura Guard frame composed of SAE grade 316L stainless steel and Dura Skin firmly secures the display to protect the phone from hard bumps and tumbles

Earlier this fall, LG embarked on a partnership with actor, writer and director, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his Emmy Award winning production company HitRECord to support the development of creative content. The innovative collaboration builds upon LG’s ambition to celebrate and support creators across the world. Specifically, the efforts include the creation of a television commercial in the United States and a short film focused on the In-Between Moments which “happen all throughout the day and can be beautiful, or spontaneous, or fleeting — but they give life its texture.”

“Designed from the ground up primarily as a multimedia smartphone, the LG V10 is the ultimate device for the sharing ecosystem,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Consumers have been waiting for a true multimedia device that doesn’t cut corners. With the V10, we hope to show what smartphones are truly capable of.”

Prices and availability dates will be announced locally.

LG ANNOUNCES THIRD-QUARTER 2015 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Home Appliance & Air Solution Company Reports Solid Quarter,
Offsetting Challenging Market Conditions for TVs, Smartphones

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Oct. 29, 2015 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced strong operating profit margin in its Home Appliance & Air Solution Company, contributing to a modest overall net profit of KRW 124.8 billion (USD 106.76 million) for the third quarter of 2015. Amid increasing competitive pressure in both the TV and smartphone sectors, LG’s third-quarter sales rose 0.7 percent from the second quarter to KRW 14.03 trillion (USD 12 billion), while operating profit increased from the previous quarter to KRW 294 billion (USD 251.5 million).

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported third-quarter revenue of KRW 4.29 trillion (USD 3.67 billion), an increase of 9 percent quarter-on-quarter due to solid sales in UHD and OLED TVs in markets such as North America, Latin America and Commonwealth of Independent States. Profitability also increased from the previous quarter as a result of improvements in product mix and cost structure. With continuing soft global TV demand, LG plans to bolster its profitability by increasing its marketing focus in the premium segment while continuing to improve its cost competitiveness.

The LG Mobile Communications Company reported global shipments of 14.9 million smartphones, a 6 percent increase from the previous quarter. Despite a 12 percent sales increase in North America, overall revenues of KRW 3.38 trillion (USD 2.89 billion) were 7 percent lower quarter-on-quarter and decreased 21 percent year-on-year due in large part to weaker demand for high-end devices in Korea. LG expects the launch of the advanced V10 and price-competitive Nexus 5X smartphones in the fourth quarter to improve the overall product mix.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company reported a strong quarter with a 4 percent increase in sales to KRW 4.15 trillion (USD 3.55 billion) and an operating profit of KRW 245.6 billion (USD 210.1 million), an increase of 420 percent from the same period the year before. Operating profit for refrigerators improved as a result of strong sales of premium models in North America and Korea while the unique new Twin Wash system contributed toward improved profit margins in the washing machine business. Fourth-quarter results are likely to be impacted by the effects of unfavorable exchange rate and seasonality.

The LG Vehicle Components Company reported a 6 percent increase in sales quarter-on-quarter to KRW 478.6 billion (USD 409.41 million) primarily as a result of its growing infotainment business. Revenues from vehicle engineering were flat due to weaker demand in emerging markets such as Russia and Malaysia. Investments in R&D related to electric car and automotive electronic components contributed to a modest operating loss. Going forward, LG expects recent issues related to diesel automobiles to positively affect the electric vehicle and automotive electronic components markets.

Chevrolet Bolt EV to be Developed Through Strategic Partnership Between GM and LG

Engineers from GM and LG Electronics Partner on Critical Components

SEOUL, Oct. 21, 2015 — General Motors set aside traditional vehicle development in selecting LG Electronics as its partner in developing the next generation Chevrolet Bolt EV (electric vehicle), which can travel more than 200 miles on a single electric charge.

Offering consumers the first long-range, affordable EV required an unprecedented supplier relationship combining expertise in infotainment, battery systems and component development with GM’s proven in-house capabilities in electric motor design, battery control, system validation and vehicle body/system integration.

Following joint planning and research, GM and LG brought the Chevrolet Bolt EV to reality. The Bolt EV concept was shown at the North American International Auto Show in January this year. Chevrolet confirmed in February that the Bolt EV would go into production at GM’s Orion Township, Michigan (USA) assembly plant in late 2016.

GM & LG Blend Expertise

Engineers considered different vehicle architectures, electric driving ranges and performance options for the Bolt EV before deciding the vehicle must be affordable and deliver 200-plus miles of all-electric driving with spirited performance. LG supplied an array of new components and systems for the Chevrolet Bolt EV, including:

  • Electric Drive Motor (built from GM design)
  • Power Invertor Module (converts DC power to AC for the drive unit)
  • On Board Charger
  • Electric Climate Control System Compressor
  • Battery Cells and Pack
  • High Power Distribution Module (manages the flow of high voltage to various components)
  • Battery Heater
  • Accessory Power Module (maintains low-voltage power delivery to accessories)
  • Power Line Communication Module (manages communication between vehicle and a DC charging station)
  • Instrument Cluster
  • Infotainment System

“Chevrolet needs to be disruptive in order to maintain our leadership position in electrification,” said Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. “By taking the best of our in-house engineering prowess established with the Chevrolet Volt and Spark EV, and combining the experience of the LG Group, we’re able to transform the concept of the industry’s first long range, affordable EV into reality.”

LG Electronics’ Vehicle Components led a team of LG companies including LG Chem, LG Innotek and LG Display to help develop the Bolt EV. LG Electronics has invested more than $250 million in an engineering and manufacturing facility in Incheon, Korea, to support the component development and manufacturing for Bolt EV components.

“Being selected as GM’s EV technology partner positions LG as a key player in next-generation vehicular technologies,” said Lee Woo-jong, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Vehicle Components Company. “The opportunity to work with GM on such game-changing technology is indicative of exactly the type of contributions that traditional tech companies can make in the automotive space.”

GM-LG Longstanding Relationship

GM’s relationship with LG began in 2007 when LG Electronics was tasked with supplying the vehicle communications module for OnStar, GM’s exclusive telematics system. Another LG-owned company, LG Chem, and GM have a long-standing relationship: the company was chosen as the sole supplier of battery cells for the first-generation Chevrolet Volt, which launched in 2010.

After delivering exceptional quality for the more than 23 million cells with less than two problems per million cells produced for the first-generation Chevrolet Volt, GM turned to the LG Corp. to bring forward new expertise from LG Electronics and other LG companies. The agreements encompassed supplying components for the Bolt EV and marked the first time that GM integrated a full EV component supplier so early in vehicle development.
