Two LG Wine Smart devices in Burgundy – one almost folded and the other one fully unfolded

SEOUL, Aug. 5, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) brings global consumers with its newest hybrid smartphone designed especially for a generation of users who are more accustomed to the feel of flip — also known as folder or clamshell — phones. The Wine Smart combines the familiarity of a folder phone with an easy-to-use touchscreen and the connectivity and power of a smartphone. The new LG Wine Smart is powered by Android Lollipop 5.1.1 to run the latest apps without complaint. The Wine Smart includes LG’s Safety Care feature which can be set to automatically transmit emergency alerts and real-time location to pre-selected contacts whenever the user needs immediate assistance.

“Our goal with LG Wine Smart was to create a smartphone that fans of flip phones could embrace,” said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications Company. “Consumers shouldn’t have to miss out on the smartphone revolution because they prefer a particular phone design over another. LG ANNOUNCES SECOND-QUARTER 2015 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Company Reports Net Profit in Challenging Quarter

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, July 29, 2015 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced a modest net profit of KRW 226.4 billion (USD 206.38 million) for the second quarter of 2015, in an extremely challenging environment.

In light of a sluggish global TV market and intense competitive pressures, overall second-quarter sales declined 7.6 percent from the same period last year to KRW 13.93 trillion (USD 12.69 billion). Although revenues remained at virtually the same level as the previous quarter, operating profits declined slightly to KRW 244.1 billion (USD 222.52 million). While the second quarter was more challenging than expected, LG is confident it can recover lost ground in the third quarter with new competitive products and more effective marketing initiatives.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported quarterly revenue of KRW 3.93 trillion (USD 3.59 billion) due to the weak global market for LCD TVs, most notably in the CIS, Latin America and Europe. Second-quarter operating margin declined from the previous quarter largely due to soft global demand and negative currency effects. The company expects the overall market to improve in future quarters primarily in the premium 4K Ultra HD segment, while it expands its OLED line with newer designs at more attractive price points.

The LG Mobile Communications Company reported sales of KRW 3.65 trillion (USD 3.33 billion) in the second quarter, a slight increase of 1 percent from the same period last year. While LG’s global smartphone shipments of 14.1 million units reflected a modest 3 percent decline from the same period last year, North America revenues increased by 36 percent year-over-year due to better performance of mid-range smartphones and tablets. Although overall profitably was affected by weaker demand in the premium segment in the domestic Korean market, LG sold more than 8.1 million LTE smartphones worldwide in the quarter, its highest ever. In the third quarter and beyond, LG will more aggressively implement its dual strategy focusing on both premium devices as well as mid-range smartphones targeting emerging markets.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company reported sales of KRW 4.49 trillion (USD 4.09 billion), an increase of 10 percent from the previous quarter. Second-quarter operating profit of KRW 291.8 billion (USD 266 million) increased by 6 percent year-over-year as a result of better product offerings and improved cost structure. As macroeconomic conditions are not expected to improve in the near future, LG will step-up its focus on improving profitability in large part by introducing new air conditioning and home appliance products in North America and other developed markets.

The LG Vehicle Components Company recorded revenues of KRW 450.8 billion (USD 410.94 million) in the second quarter, an 18 percent increase from the previous quarter, mainly from its car infotainment and automotive component engineering business. Despite a modest operating loss of KRW 1.5 billion (USD 1.37 million), LG is accelerating its investment in R&D to further strengthen its position in new automotive technologies as the market for electric cars and electronic components continues to grow.

2015 2Q Exchange Rates Explained

LG Electronics’ unaudited quarterly earnings results are based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period ending June 30, 2015. Amounts in Korean won (KRW) are translated into U.S. dollars (USD) at the average rate of the three-month period of the corresponding quarter — KRW 1,097 per USD (2015 2Q).

Earnings Conference and Conference Call

LG Electronics will hold a Korean language earnings conference on July 29, 2015 at 16:00 Korea Standard Time at the LG Twin Tower Auditorium (B1 East Tower, 20 Yeoui-daero, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, Korea). LG USHERS IN A NEW AGE OF CONVENIENCE WITH REVOLUTIONARY TWIN WASH™

Combination Main Washer and Mini Washer Saves Time, Space and Energy

LG TWINWash™ washing machine in white color with front-load on the top and mini top-load at the bottom. Both washers are opened.

SEOUL, July 22, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) today brings to market a washing machine so unique that it redefines the concept of laundry. The LG TWIN Wash™, first unveiled at CES 2015, enables two separate loads to be washed simultaneously by combining a full-sized front loading washing machine with a mini washer in a hide-away pedestal, generating a whole new set of washing options. With its official launch in Korea, LG is raising the bar to a new level of home appliance innovation.

A New Dimension of Convenience

The LG TWIN WashTM significantly cuts down on washing time as multiple loads of laundry can now be handled simultaneously. The powerful main washer — available in three load sizes: 17kg, 19kg and 21kg — handles the bulk of the laundry, while the mini washer can be set to run a different wash cycle. Smaller loads can be washed when needed without having to wait until a full wash load has accumulated, saving users time. The mini washer is suitable for delicate or specialized items that require a unique wash setting, such as lingerie or baby clothes.

Advanced Technology for Clothes

TWIN Wash™ features LG’s unique TurboWash™ 2.0 technology. Nozzles positioned inside the drum of the main washer spray a concentrated solution of detergent directly onto the clothes, improving the unit’s cleaning performance. Another high pressure nozzle sprays tiny water particles through the clothes during high spin cycles for more effective rinsing. The revolutionary Inverter Direct Drive motor at the heart of the LG Twin Wash™ is attached directly to the drum, improving efficiency and reducing the number of moving parts, leading to enhanced durability. Also, the washing machine’s Energy Monitoring feature provides helpful data while LG’s proprietary HomeChat™ service, available in the 21kg system, allows users to check the status of their washing machine using everyday natural language.

Premium Ergonomic Design

The LG TWIN Wash™ is designed to fit in the space of a typical front loading washing machine so nothing is sacrificed for the added convenience. The door of the main washer is aligned with the drum’s center, positioned higher than on conventional models and tilted at an angle to make loading and unloading the main drum easier. The mini washer and pedestal housing can be purchased separately to give current owners of LG front loading washing machines all the benefits of the TWIN WashTM at a fraction of the cost. The LG TWIN Wash™ is available in two attractive colors: modern stainless and white. LG TWIN Wash™ was recognized for its advanced design, winning the Red Dot Design Award and the IDEA (International Design Excellence Award) earlier this year.

“The LG TWIN Wash™ is revolutionary because it offers a solution to the age old problem of when to do the laundry,” said Jo Seong-jin, President and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance and Air Solution Company. “Homeowners will never think of laundry the same way ever again because with TWIN Wash™, laundry day can be any day of the week. It’s this kind of innovative thinking that has propelled LG to the front of the pack in the washing machine segment.”

The timing of LG TWIN Wash™ availability in other markets will be announced locally once confirmed.

SEOUL, July 20, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) will roll out its newest mid-range 3G smartphone, a competitively-priced alternative for today’s discerning smartphone buyers in 3G markets. The LG Bello II 1 is the successor to last year’s popular L Bello and features a large display, a more powerful selfie camera and key camera features carried over from the company’s premium models. The LG Bello II will arrive in key markets in Latin America and India this month, to be followed by rollouts in Europe and CIS throughout the third quarter.

In addition to the large 5.0-inch display, a 5MP front-facing camera and a best-in-class 2,540mAh replaceable battery that provides ample power for all of its advanced features. Gesture Shot enables users to take selfies without pressing any buttons — perfect for selfie sticks — by simply opening and closing a hand in front of the camera. And Selfie Flash turns the phone’s display into a soft flash for portraits that are more subtle and refined.

All of these features are packaged in a sleek design that makes use of premium materials for added style and durability. A Spin Hairline pattern accents the metallic edge and a multi-layered, grooved circular pattern creates a unique visual effect on the rear cover, while also improving grip and texture.

“The LG Bello II brings unprecedented value to 3G markets, which still account for a significant 40 percent of smartphone markets,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With its 5MP selfie camera, large display and familiar features, the LG Bello II is a great balance of form, function and price, which is why we expect to be even more successful than its predecessor.”

FIELD TESTS OF NEXT-GEN TV BROADCAST SYSTEM SHOW CAPABILITIES OF EMERGING ATSC 3.0 STANDARD

Cleveland Test Results Verify Improved Reception, Simultaneous
Transmission of Mobile, Handheld and 4K Ultra HDTV Signals

Experts watch videos on a bus via ATSC 3.0 signals.

CLEVELAND, July 10, 2015 – Television broadcasters will reach even more viewers with robust, digital over-the-air ATSC 3.0 signals, the improved broadcast transmission system under development now with key elements being field tested here this summer.

Under an experimental broadcast license from the FCC, Tribune Broadcasting’s WJW-TV is providing a TV transmitter, tower and 6-MHz channel for the ATSC 3.0-related field testing in Cleveland conducted since mid-May by LG Electronics, its Zenith R&D Lab, and GatesAir.

These real-world field tests represent an important milestone in the collaborative effort by LG, GatesAir and Zenith to develop core technologies behind the new ATSC 3.0 Standard. In fact, their innovations are expected to be used in the majority of the baseline Physical Layer transmission system, which is moving toward ATSC Candidate Standard status this summer.

This week in Cleveland, expert viewers visited a number of locations, witnessing how the more robust TV system will attract mobile viewers, connect viewers with Internet content, reach those in difficult reception locations, and delight owners of future 4K Ultra High-Definition TV sets with pristine 4K content delivered over-the-air using the new ATSC 3.0 standard.

The system being tested in Cleveland – dubbed “Futurecast” by proponents GatesAir, LG and Zenith – is a leading contributor to the effort to develop a next-generation ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard, which is being standardized by the Advanced Television Systems Committee.

Initial Results:  Broader Coverage, More Viewers

Like similar field tests last fall in Madison, Wis., the Cleveland results are very encouraging.  More than 75,000 pieces of additional data collected by engineers in the North Coast tests show how ATSC 3.0 will be able to deliver 4K Ultra HD content and two robust mobile TV streams in a single 6-Megahertz channel, while optimizing indoor reception and offering unparalleled spectrum efficiency.

Experts report that results in Cleveland are even more encouraging than the previous Wisconsin tests, with improved signal acquisition for mobile TV reception in fast-moving vehicles and at locations ranging from downtown’s concrete canyons to suburban and rural areas 50 miles from the transmitter.

“We’re pleased to play an integral role in the future of TV broadcast technology, putting an unused transmitter and vacant channel to use so that the proposed transmission system could be tested throughout the day and night. These initial field test results show that ATSC 3.0 technologies are real and can deliver real benefits to broadcasters and viewers alike,” said John Cifani, chief engineer of WJW-TV, the local Fox affiliate.

The Futurecast physical layer technologies are designed to provide the optimized combination of broadcasting capabilities for fixed, portable and mobile use. Flexible parameters allow broadcasters to mix diverse services – from fixed 4K reception to deep-indoor handheld reception to high-speed mobile reception – in a single RF channel with maximum efficiency.

Improved Reception, Flexibility for New Business Models

“Our technology is designed to fully meet broadcaster requirements for ATSC 3.0 and advance the goal of moving rapidly to next-generation broadcasting. Whether watching from deep inside a building or along the Lake Erie lakefront, field test results show that our ATSC 3.0-enabling technology performs exactly as expected,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and Chief Technology Officer, LG Electronics.

“This means that broadcasters can look forward with confidence to reaching even more viewers with traditional television, with new Internet-based content, and with new money-making interactive services and advertising capabilities,” he said.

Key benefits of the LG/GatesAir/Zenith ATSC 3.0 technologies being field tested in Cleveland include:

  • Data throughput increases of 30 percent and improved multipath performance (compared with the current DTV standard) for fixed and portable TV reception;
  • Enhanced indoor TV signal penetration for mobile reception thanks to flexible system parameter choices;
  • Advanced modes for delivery of very high data rates and very robust transmission capabilities;
  • State-of-the-art error correction coding and signal constellations;
  • Future Extension Frames to support evolution of future broadcast systems; and,
  • Improved single frequency network service.

Advanced Emergency Alerting with ATSC 3.0

Rich Redmond, Chief Product Officer for Gates Air, said, “Not only will reception be improved, but the advanced IP-based distribution and mobile broadcasting capabilities of ATSC 3.0 will shine through in times of emergency. Our collaborative innovations will support industry-wide efforts to evolve over-the-air business models, support next-generation warning systems and extend the reach of digital TV across greater populations.” Redmond adds that this includes leveraging AWARN (the Advanced Warning and Response Network) to deliver broadcast emergency announcements to TV sets and mobile devices containing rich media, maps, graphics, video, text, and audio.”

In addition to participating in field testing of ATSC 3.0 enabling technologies, expert viewers here today witnessed advanced emergency alerting capabilities thanks to a demonstration hosted by local CBS affiliate WOIO-TV, a Raycom Media station and member of the Pearl TV broadcast technology partnership.

AWARN will capitalize on the robust transmission and improved mobile and fixed reception promised by ATSC 3.0, according to WOIO-TV General Manager Dominic Mancuso.

“Local broadcasters are vital links to our viewers here in Cleveland and across the country. Our viewers know that they can trust us to have the latest information in times of public safety emergencies. With ATSC 3.0 and AWARN, the public won’t be dependent on Internet or local phone service,” he said.

Redefining Broadcasting’s Future

Expected to redefine TV broadcasting for decades to come, the next-generation broadcast television standard will require higher capacity to deliver 4K Ultra-High-Definition services, robust reception on mobile devices and improved spectrum efficiency. The increased payload capacity of the physical layer combined with HEVC encoding will allow broadcasters many more options when planning their broadcast service offerings.

Designed for easy extension to various current and future transport formats, the LG/GatesAir/Zenith solutions optimize efficiency for the most-used data formats (Internet Protocol, Transport Stream) via customized stream compression.

The system supports single-frequency networks and/or multiple transmitters, and its use of a single RF transmission’s flexible physical layer profile assures optimum quality of service. The system is designed to support evolution to future broadcast systems even beyond ATSC 3.0.

Equally significant, the superior RF approach of the proven Futurecast system addresses the co-channel and adjacent-channel interference challenges related to the anticipated UHF spectrum repacking.

Development of ATSC 3.0 technologies represents the latest collaboration among LG, Zenith and GatesAir, co-inventors of the transmission system behind the ATSC A/153 Mobile Digital TV Standard, adopted by the industry in 2009.  Zenith invented the core transmission system at the heart of today’s ATSC A/53 Digital Television Standard, approved by the Federal Communications Commission in 1996.

LG INNOVATIONS IN TV TECHNOLOGY EARNS LG RECOGNITION ON BOTH SIDES OF ATLANTIC

LG 4K OLED TV Crowned “King of TV” in the USA; LG Named
“Most Innovative Brand of the Year” at Plus X Awards in Germany

LG Electronics’ USA head of Product Marketing for Home Entertainment Products, Tim Alessi, and Value Electronics TV Shootout organizer, Robert Zohn, shaking hands at the 11th Annual Value Electronics TV Shootout™.

SEOUL, July 1, 2015 — LG Electronics’ (LG) Art Slim CURVED 4K OLED TV won the 11th Annual Value Electronics TV Shootout™ in a competition among four contending flagship ULTRA HD TV models from LG and other leading brands during CE Week in New York City. A week earlier, led by its lineup of OLED and ULTRA HD TVs, LG was awarded the title of Most Innovative Brand of the Year for a second time in a row at Plus X Award Night in Bonn, Germany.

The Value Electronics TV Shootout in USA is an annual event comparing the flagship TVs from major manufacturers to identify which provides the top in picture quality. The 65-inch class LG Art Slim CURVED 4K OLED TV (Model 65EG9600) was voted the top performing TV by both general attendees and a panel of expert calibrators based on several different picture quality attributes including black level, perceived contrast, color accuracy, and motion resolution, among others. The breathtaking picture quality of LG’s 65EG9600 beat out competitors’ best Ultra HD flat and curved TVs and was crowned King of TV for 2015.

LG’s CURVED 4K OLED TV combines the intense detail of Ultra HD with the superior contrast and rich, accurate color that only OLED can provide, to display what leading industry pundits have deemed the best picture ever. OLED’s revolutionary technology delivers an awe-inspiring picture with perfect blacks and incredible color, even from wide viewing angles. LG’s Art Slim design philosophy is a complement to any interior décor as the TV boasts an amazingly slim depth at only a few millimeters and a stylish, frameless design.

“This is the second consecutive year that LG OLED TV has taken the crown, beating its LED counterparts in an intense side-by-side comparison,” said TV Shootout organizer Robert Zohn, owner of Value Electronics, a leading specialty retailer based in Scarsdale, N.Y. “The experts and CE Week attendees have spoken: OLED TVs deliver superior picture quality compared to contemporary TV technologies.”

A few days earlier on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, LG was the recipient of the prestigious Most Innovation Brand of the Year award at Plus X Award Night in Bonn, Germany. Now in its 12th year, the Plus X Award distinguishes sports and lifestyle products that are innovative, viable for the future and possess at least one “Plus X” factor that puts it ahead of the competition. LG’s display technology impressed the Plus X Award jury, in particular the 4K OLED TV (Model 77EC980V).

“For years LG has been at the forefront of innovations that demanded recognition from both experts and consumers, and industry recognition further validates our efforts, especially with 4K OLED TVs,” said Lee In-kyu, senior vice president and head of the TV and Monitor Division at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “OLED TVs are a whole new standard in picture quality and when matched with Ultra HD technology, the results are simply astounding.”

LG UNVEILS ITS MOST EFFICIENT SOLAR PANEL TO DATE AT INTERSOLAR EUROPE

Innovative Cello Technology™ Allows LG NeON™ 2
to Deliver Improved Performance and Greater Efficiency

After receiving the Intersolar AWARD for Photovoltaics on the opening day of the event, Choi Young-ho, vice president of LG’s Solar Business Division, and Michael Harre, EU Solar Sales Director take a picture.

SEOUL, June 11, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) is introducing its innovative and efficient solar power system at Intersolar Europe in Munich, Germany from June 10-12. At the world’s leading exhibition for the solar industry, LG will display its latest NeON™ 2 solar energy solutions. Equipped with newly developed Cello Technology™, NeON™ 2 offers better performance and reliability with significant improvements over the original NeON™. The LG NeON™ 2 was recognized with the Intersolar AWARD for Photovoltaics on the opening day of the event for its “groundbreaking idea and technological innovation.”

The efficiency of the NeON™ 2 produces better power performance with less hassle, raising the bar for the entire solar panel market. Cello — which stands for Cell Connection, Electrically, Low Loss, Low Stress and Optical Absorption Enhancement — utilizes circular-shaped wires to scatter light more effectively for better absorption, while reducing the electrical loss by spreading the current with 12 wires.

Thanks to its improved temperature coefficient, the NeON™ 2 can generate more electricity on a sunny day and performs more efficiently on cloudy days due to its low energy reduction in weak sunlight. Whereas conventional p-type silicon modules suffer from Light Induced Degradation (LID), the NeON™ 2 uses n-type wafer modules that are more durable. And the NeON™ 2’s improved rigidity with reinforced frame design gives LG the confidence to extend the warranty to 12 full years, the industry’s best.

The NeON™ 2 is perfect for homeowners who want to maximize the energy production potential in a limited roof space. The 320W NeON™ 2 boasts 6.4 kWp capacity with 20 modules (60 cells) while the capacity of a 285W p-type Mono with the same number of modules generates only 5.7 kWp. LG’s highly efficient panel can more easily be installed in a module array on the roof regardless of its surrounding environment. And the more efficient space management of the NeON™ 2 makes it suitable for installing in a large-scale system as it achieves higher power output than a 72-cell module, using only 60 cells. Balance of System (B.O.S.) saving features have been incorporated into the NeON™ 2 to reduce the total number of strings, based on its higher efficiency and lower voltage than 72-cell modules.

“We are extremely grateful to the organizers of Intersolar Europe and international industry associations for recognizing LG NeON™ 2 at this year’s show,” said Lee Chung-ho, senior vice president and head of LG’s Solar Business Division. “In this very competitive industry, it’s critical to keep innovating to stay one step ahead. NeON™ 2 is a very tangible example of the kind of innovation required to solve today’s most complex environmental challenges. Intersolar Europe is the perfect venue to demonstrate what LG can bring to the table.”

Latest 4K Monitor Entices High-Level Gamers with Immersive Experience
Delivered by 4K IPS Display and AMD’s Free Sync
A left-side view of the new LG 4K ULTRA HD monitor (model 27MU67).

SEOUL, June. 9, 2015 — LG Electronics will help gamers take their experience to a new level with the new LG 4K ULTRA HD monitor (model 27MU67) which will be rolling out this month in select markets worldwide. The 16:9 aspect ratio 27-inch class monitor, which is specifically designed to provide a premium gaming experience, boasts a large viewing area and a 3840 x 2160 screen resolution for an eye-popping 4K visual experience.

LG’s newest monitor is intended for the graphics-intensive visuals and fast-paced action of today’s 4K Real-time strategy (RTS) and First-person shooter (FPS) games. The monitor supports AMD’s FreeSync technology with a refresh range of 40-60Hz. FreeSync eliminates image-tearing and stuttering, which occurs when the monitor and graphics card are out of sync. The result is a smooth and seamless gaming experience, with fluid motion and no loss of frame rate.

The LG 27MU67 offers both In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel and Dynamic Action Sync (DAS) mode, reducing input lag to only 9.7 milliseconds, making it among the fastest 4K monitors on the market today. With the Game Mode hot key, users can individually customize the monitor’s settings for each game to optimize the gaming experience. Black Stabilizer illuminates dark scenes and helps to clearly define the black areas where objects and enemies could be hidden. What’s more, the Flicker Safe function lowers the risk of eye fatigue during marathon gaming or work sessions.

In addition to its gaming prowess, the 27MU67 excels at delivering excellent picture quality thanks to its 4K Ultra HD resolution that provides increased clarity, sharper texture and more details. The monitor’s specially designed IPS 4K panels provide consistent color reproduction from almost any viewing angle and is capable of displaying over 99 percent of the sRGB spectrum to deliver more accurate color reproduction than the competition. LG’s newest monitor offers both factory calibration and factory presets and is equipped with HDMI 2.0 input to support 4K resolution at 60Hz.

“A monitor with sharp picture quality, high field of view and less input lag is a must-have for today’s serious gamers,” said In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV and Monitor Division at LG Home Entertainment Company. “The LG 27MU67 not only delivers on all counts, it is an excellent 4K Ultra HD monitor for professionals and non-gamers alike who want to design, edit or just watch movies.”
