QUANTUM DOT TECHNOLOGY TO JOIN LG’S 4K ULTRA HD TV LINEUP IN 2015

LG Offers More Choices for Premium Home Viewing Experience

A right-side view of LG 4K ULTRA HD TV with quantum dot technology.

SEOUL, Dec. 16, 2014 — LG Electronics (LG) will unveil a new 4K ULTRA HD TV with quantum dot technology as a new component of its expanded TV lineup at the 2015 International CES®, Jan. 6-9 in Las Vegas. LG’s 4K ULTRA HD TVs with quantum dot technology will offer a wider color palette and improved color saturation than conventional LCD TVs and will be available in 2015 to complement LG’s other ULTRA HD TV and OLED TV offerings.

LG’s quantum dot technology displays an extremely wide color gamut, making it ideal for 4K content. The technology works by harnessing nano crystals that range in size from 2 to 10 nanometers. Each dot emits a different color depending on its size. By adding a film of quantum dots in front of the LCD backlight, picture color reproduction rate and overall brightness are significantly improved.

Since the nano-sized dots emit extraordinarily vivid colors, quantum dot technology is able to enhance the already stunning capabilities of LG’s 4K ULTRA HD In-Plane Switching (IPS) displays. The color reproduction rate in LG’s IPS panels, which offers high color accuracy and extra wide viewing angles, is increased with the addition of the quantum dot film by more than 30 percent compared with conventional LCD/LED TVs.

LG’s 4K ULTRA HD TVs with quantum dot technology will employ technology designed with the environment in mind as they contain no cadmium or any other toxic heavy metals.

“Quantum dot’s vibrant and vivid color reproduction capabilities brings LG’s LCD TVs to the next level when it comes to picture quality,” said In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV and monitor division at the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “The addition of ULTRA HD TV with quantum dot technology to our TV lineup positioned under our award-winning OLED TVs further establishes LG as a leading provider of the most diverse and innovative TV display technologies in the industry.”

Visitors to LG’s booth at CES 2015 (Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall #8204) from Jan. 6-9 will have the opportunity to see LG’s stunning 4K ULTRA HD TVs with their own eyes.

LG SOLAR POWERED REFRIGERATORS TO RURAL COMMUNITIES IN AFRICA AND SOUTH AMERICA

Refrigerators Equipped with Cutting-edge Smart Inverter Compressors

to Improve Health Coverage in Areas Without Reliable Electricity

People from LG and World Vision Kenya standing in front of the LG solar powered refrigerator equipped with Smart Inverter Compressor

SEOUL, Nov. 26, 2014 — Twenty solar powered refrigerators equipped with Smart Inverter Compressors were donated to local communities in Africa and South America as part of LG Electronics’ partnership with the non-profit organization World Vision Kenya as well as the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation of Peru. These donations specifically targeted areas where the refrigeration of important items like vaccines, medication and food for children and the elderly is essential, but difficult to maintain. The twenty units have been allocated to the neediest communities in Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania and Peru.

World Vision Kenya will use the LG solar refrigerators to improve immunization coverage among children under five years old as well as among pregnant and lactating women in Kenya’s West Pokot County. LG is also partnering with the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation of Peru, donating refrigerators to the National Tambos Program which helps serve those living in remote mountain villages that have no access to a local power grid.

Thanks to LG’s innovative Smart Inverter Compressor, the solar refrigerators can run entirely on power from the sun, with no additional power source. The solar power system consists of solar panels, controllers and a battery so that the refrigerators can operate even in at night and in cloudy weather. LG refrigerator with its innovative Smart Inverter Compressor is 36 percent1 more energy efficient than conventional models equipped with non-inverter compressor and generates only 37.8dB2 of noise while operating, which is less noise than a library.

Thanks to the technology behind the Smart Inverter Compressor, LG refrigerators provide cooling retention even when operating on low voltage unlike other refrigerators. They can also withstand voltage variations, thus ensuring against unpredictable high-voltage streams or power surges3. Due to different voltages and frequencies, solar power can be an unstable source of energy for appliances. However, LG’s Inverter technology uses a control technology which allows for consistent operation, adapting its power supply to keep the refrigerator running at peak efficiency while also preventing any damage to the appliance.

“LG is committed to using its innovative technology to help improve the lives of vulnerable children and communities around the world,” said Young-il Park, head of the refrigerator business unit at LG. “At LG, we believe that giving back to our communities is what defines a true global citizen.”

Immunization coverage for Kenya’s West Pokot County is currently only 56 percent, with high infant mortality and death rate for children under the age of five. LG’s donation of solar powered refrigerators will allow the communities to obtain the latest immunizations and other medical treatments, ultimately reducing the number of deaths caused by preventable diseases, improving the area’s standard of living.

10 MILLION HOMES BENEFITING FROM LG REFRIGERATORS WITH INVERTER LINEAR COMPRESSOR TECHNOLOGY

LG Achieves Industry Milestone with Innovation

LG Multi-Door refrigerator with its upper-right door including Door-in-Door part open. The refrigerator is filled up with various food such as sauces and snacks.

SEOUL, Nov. 24, 201— LG Electronics (LG) once again demonstrated its leadership in home appliances by announcing sales of more than 10 million refrigerators with its patented Inverter Linear Compressor around the world since 2001. In 2001, LG introduced the world’s first refrigerator powered by an Inverter Linear Compressor, continuing to improve the technology ever since. In 2007, LG sold one million of its Inverter Linear Compressor-equipped refrigerators and increased that number to five million in 2011 and 10 million earlier this month. With strong results in premium refrigerator markets such as Korea, North America, Europe and the CIS region, LG is expected to sell more than two million Inverter Linear Compressor refrigerators in 2014.

Earlier this year, the Inverter Linear Compressor was tested by one of Europe’s largest and most respected scientific and technical bodies, the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE). LG’s technology employs a straight piston drive instead of a conventional reciprocating drive, resulting in less internal friction than conventional motors. This increases the refrigerator’s reliability and durability while also generating less noise while running. LG refrigerators featuring Inverter Linear Compressor technology proved to be approximately 32 percent1 more energy efficient than those equipped with conventional reciprocating compressors, contributing significantly to lower electricity bills. VDE also noted that LG’s refrigerator was up to 25 percent2 quieter compared to another refrigerator powered by a reciprocating compressor and reduced internal friction by 64.2 percent3, causing less wear to the refrigerator and helping it to achieve a 20 year life-span, a first in the industry.

In addition to its versatile Inverter Linear Compressor, LG’s Door-in-Door™ feature has also contributed to strong refrigerator sales. Door-in-Door™ makes it easier for users to reach frequently accessed food and beverages, helping to prevent cold air escaping when the fridge door is opened. It is this passion for innovation that has made LG a household name in the premium refrigerator market around the world. And to maintain its industry leadership, LG has filed approximately 3,100 patent applications in 16 different markets related to its Inverter Linear Compressor. And LG is so confident in its technology that the Inverter Linear Compressor has been covered under a 10-year warranty since 2009, a first in the industry.

“LG has always strived to offer consumers advanced, performing appliances in the industry,” said Young-il Park, head of LG’s refrigerator business unit. “Our Inverter Linear Compressor is the result of our commitment to excellence and technological innovation and demonstrates LG’s desire to lead the global premium refrigerator market.”

LG WASHING MACHINES SURPASS TWENTY MILLION SALES MARK GLOBALLY

Available in Over 160 Markets, LG Achieves Industry Milestone

with One Washing Machine Sold Every 8 Seconds

Front view of LG front-load washing machine (F14U1JBS2) in white

SEOUL, Nov. 4, 201— LG Electronics (LG) announced that it has sold more than twenty million units of its washing machines globally in the past five years, a remarkable accomplishment for a home appliance, demonstrating the company’s technological leadership in the washing machine market. At the heart of this achievement is LG’s innovative 6 Motion Direct Drive technology which offers users powerful yet delicate washing results similar to those of a real hand wash.

LG’s 6 Motion Direct Drive technology was first incorporated into the company’s front-load washing machines in October 2009, followed by top-load washers in January 2010. In October 2013, LG recorded 10 million in sales of its 6 Motion Direct Drive washing machines and 20 million units by early this month. With one LG washer finding a home somewhere in the world every 8 seconds, it’s no wonder LG washing machines have become the industry standard in significant markets such as the United States, Russia, China and even in Korea where there is no dearth of strong competitors. To maintain its industry leadership, LG has filed approximately 150 patent applications in several key countries for its 6 Motion Direct Drive technology.

The popularity of 6 Motion Direct Drive technology is in the six different washing motions — Tumbling, Scrubbing, Filtration, Rolling, Stepping, Swing — that individually or in combination provide powerful washing results. LG washing machines also offer optimized washing programs for a diverse range of fabrics. In addition to enhancing fabric care, the delicate motions cause fewer wrinkles and less damage. The washing machines are powered by LG’s advanced Inverter Direct Drive motor which is backed by the reliability of 10 year warranty.

The Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) has recognized LG’s 6 Motion Direct Drive technology by awarding it their Green Technology certification for its contribution to reducing greenhouse gases. This year alone, LG’s 6 Motion Direct Drive washing machines have received accolades and recognition from consumer-based organizations in nations around the world, including Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Australia and the United States. But rather than resting on the laurels of its 6 Motion Direct Drive, LG continues to introduce a variety of new technologies that to this day bring significant time and energy savings to consumers. For example, LG’s revolutionary TurboWash™ feature enables washing cycles to finish in 59 minutes1 and also reduce energy consumption by up to 15 percent and water consumption by up to 40 percent.2

“Since day one, LG has focused solely on developing innovative technologies that benefit consumers first and foremost,” said Chris Yi, executive vice president, LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “The 6 Motion Direct Drive technology is a result of that philosophy and tradition at LG. When you build the products that customers want and take care of them throughout the lifecycle of the product, your market share will be a reflection of their satisfaction.”

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Oct. 29, 201— LG Electronics (LG) announced unaudited third quarter consolidated revenues of KRW 14.92 trillion (USD 14.54 billion), an increase of 7.4 percent year-over-year, and operating profit of KRW 461.3 billion (USD 449.61 million), more than double the figure from the same period a year ago. LG’s earnings reflected strong performance from its mobile business which saw record smartphone sales in the third quarter with sales of 16.8 million units.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported third-quarter revenues of KRW 4.71 trillion (USD 4.59 billion), a slight decline of 3 percent from the same period last year. Operating profit of KRW 130.5 billion (USD 127.19 million) increased 5 percent from the same quarter last year due to better product mix. Sales of LCD TVs increased year-over-year in regions such as North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. LG expects sales of 4K Ultra HD TVs and commercial digital signage products to grow, while market demand for monitors and AV products is expected to slow.

The LG Mobile Communications Company shipped a record-breaking 16.8 million smartphones in the third quarter, an increase of 39 percent year-on-year and 16 percent more units than the previous quarter. Sales of KRW 4.25 trillion (USD 4.14 billion) and operating income of KRW 167.4 billion (USD 163.16 million) were the highest in the company’s history since the third quarter of 2009. Building on its momentum and two consecutive profitable quarters, LG expects to strengthen its positioning in the smartphone market with its G Series and L SeriesIII models despite the landscape becoming more competitive.

The LG Home Appliance Company reported revenues of KRW 2.91 trillion (USD 2.84 billion), a slight decrease from the same period the year before, despite improved sales in Korea, Europe and developing markets such as the Middle East and South East Asia. Greater competition in North America and unfavorable foreign currency exchange rates resulted in a lower third–quarter operating profit of KRW 51.8 billion (USD 50.49 million). LG expects profitability to increase in the fourth quarter with an expanded home appliance product portfolio and improved cost structure.

The LG Air Conditioning & Energy Solution Company reported revenues of KRW 925.6 billion (USD 902.14 million), a 5 percent decline from a year ago. An operating loss of KRW 2.5 billion (USD 2.44 million) was primarily due to weak demand in residential air conditioners in Korea related to weather conditions, which offset steady growth in the Middle East and Latin America. LG expects overseas sales to improve with more customized and higher energy efficient systems while it targets the growing construction and civilian industries in Korea with its commercial products.

2014 3Q Exchange Rates Explained

LG Electronics’ unaudited quarterly earnings results are based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period ending September 30, 2014. Amounts in Korean won (KRW) are translated into U.S. dollars (USD) at the average rate of the three-month period of the corresponding quarter — KRW 1,026 per USD (2014 3Q).

Logo of LG Electronics

SEOUL, Oct. 22, 2014 — LG Electronics (LG) will be contributing two thousands smartphones toward the United Nations’ response to the deadly outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa. The donated smartphones from LG will be provided to healthcare and other key personnel dispatched by the UN in the affected areas where they are urgently needed. The smartphones will allow for fast and seamless communication between the teams on the ground, focusing on medical data gathering, monitoring and planning. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will facilitate the distribution of the mobile devices.

“We hope that our contribution will make a difference as the UN and NGOs fight on the front lines to improve healthcare, food security and sanitation in areas affected by the Ebola epidemic,” said Choong-hak Lee, senior vice president and head of LG’s corporate social responsibility efforts. “This endeavor is representative of LG’s ongoing mission to use its technology to contribute toward resolving global issues.”

According to OCHA, almost one billion dollars will be needed to address the immediate humanitarian needs caused by the Ebola virus. Almost 5,000 people have been infected with Ebola since the outbreak started in West Africa in March with more than 2,400 individuals having died across the region. Support from LG and other international partners is critical to the UN’s efforts to stabilize the outbreak.
