LG BREAKS WITH CONVENTIONAL CONCEPTS OF LIGHTING AT LIGHT+BUILDING 2014

Smart Lighting Lead the Way as LG Expands Global Lighting Business

FRANKFURT, Mar. 31, 2014 — LG Electronics (LG) will mark the expansion of its global lighting business by introducing its newest lighting products at the Light+Building 2014 trade show from March 30 to April 4 at the Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre in Germany. Under the theme of Simply Smart in Lighting, LG will showcase advanced lighting technologies in the areas of Energy Savings & Payback, Connect & Control and Comfort & Well-being.

Making its global debut following its introduction in Korea will be LG’s Smart Lamp, which can be connected directly to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth and controlled with a free downloadable Android or iOS app. The Smart Lamp offers nine modes of operation that can be personalized for each individual. In Sleep Mode, for example, the Smart Lamp can be set to gradually dim as the user falls asleep and brighten in the morning when the alarm clock sounds.

Another innovative lighting product being unveiled at Light+Building 2014 is LG’s OLED Table Lamp, the world’s first product of its kind to utilize a curved OLED panel as a light source. Produced exclusively by LG Chem, the OLED panels utilized in the OLED Table Lamp are incredibly thin and flexible and are considered by many to be the next generation in lighting technology. LG OLED Table Lamp can also be controlled remotely with a compatible smartphone or tablet running the LG lighting control app.

Also being showcased for the first time at the Light+Building show is LG’s Color Tunable Flat Light which can alter its color and color temperature via the smartphone and tablet app to create a unique mood for any room. Light has always been known to have an amazing effect on people, both emotionally and biologically. Used effectively, LG’s Color Tunable Flat Light can play a key role in promoting the well-being of individuals and creating a pleasant ambience.

To highlight their advanced capabilities, all three products will be demonstrated in LG’s Smart Home Zone at Light+Building using LG’s HomeChat™ service, first introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. With HomeChat, customers will be able to communicate with the lights using the popular messaging app LINE, utilizing normal everyday language. Type “I am going out” and HomeChat will ask “Do you want me to turn on security mode?” If the user responds affirmatively, the lights will be randomly cycled on and off to give the appearance of the home being occupied.

Other LG lighting products on display at Light+Building 2014 are:

LG LED Flat Light incorporates the company’s advanced optical technology from its incredibly thin LED TVs, making LG’s LED Flat Light approximately 70 percent slimmer than competing LED lighting. The slim profile and soft light generated by LG LED Flat Light makes this appropriate for most living and work spaces.

Benefitting from the company’s proprietary technology in heat dissipation, LG LED-T111 lighting offers the brightness of a 70 watt metal-halide lamp (3,400 lumens) from its small and light form factor. This product is a perfect match for high-end retail stores and other commercial spaces where premium feel and energy efficiency are high priorities.

LG’s LED Streetlights and Downlights are designed to be modular to meet the needs of various environments and customers. The modular design makes LG lights more future-proof since older parts and components can be replaced with more efficient ones. Modular design also has the potential to save customers money because only certain parts need to be changed — as opposed to the entire luminaire housing—and future upgrades would likely result in higher energy efficiency. And to ensure that LG LED Streetlights properly blend in with their surroundings, LG set a high priority on minimalistic design with high functionality.

LED Essentials from LG Lighting, a new lineup of commercial LED products from LG, will also be unveiled at Light+Building 2014. Focusing on the core features and benefits of LED lighting, the five products in LED Essentials from LG Lighting — halogen replacement downlight, CFL replacement downlight, LED recessed flat, LED high-bay and LED batten — are designed to better meet the needs of the global commercial lighting market.

“At Light+Building, LG is presenting a new paradigm of lighting solutions that breaks with conventional concepts and traditions,” said Si-kwan Ryu, executive vice president of LG Electronics’ Lighting Business. “Our newest smart and energy efficient lighting products are expected to set new standards of innovation and deliver even higher value to our customers.”

As the world’s largest trade fair for lighting and building-services technology solutions, the biennial Light+Building trade show is host to 2,300 exhibitors and nearly 200,000 visitors from the fields of architecture, design, engineering and other related disciplines. Visitors to the Light+Building show are encouraged to see LG’s newest lighting products for themselves at the company’s booth in Halle 6 Ebene 2 Stand A60 from March 30 to April 4, 2014.

KEY LG SMARTPHONES TO GET KNOCK CODE™ UPGRADE

LG’s Newest UX Feature to be Available for G2 and G Flex

A front view of the LG G2 and G Flex.

SEOUL, Mar. 25, 2014— As announced at Mobile World Congress last month, Knock Code™ will be a key feature in LG smartphone models this year, including G Pro 2, G2 mini, F Series and L SeriesIII. Now LG Electronics (LG) will make its innovative Knock Code™ feature available on earlier LG smartphone models via a firmware update starting in April. Owners of LG G2 and G Flex in specific countries will be the first to receive the Knock Code™ update which will give users instant access to their smartphones via a customized “knock” pattern.

With recent consumer research showing that most users check and unlock their devices between 100 and 150 times a day, LG was inspired to further enhance its KnockON feature with a higher layer of security and convenience. KnockOn, which LG patented in 2008, was the perfect foundation to further develop Knock Code™, which is unique in its ability to both wake and unlock the phone in one step, a clear time-saver for users. It’s no surprise that more than 50 percent of participants in a recent survey selected Knock Code™ as the most anticipated feature of G Pro 2, demonstrating the real need for an alternate solution to smartphone security.1

The consumer benefits of LG’s Knock Code™ technology are obvious in its ability to wake and unlock the phone simultaneously, providing more convenience and greater security over conventional password and pattern-based security options. With Knock Code™, the smartphone display is divided into four invisible quadrants. The user taps or “knocks” anywhere from two to eight times in the quadrants in a specific sequence. With more than 80,000 possible combinations and no fingerprint streaks, Knock Code™ offers a level of security far greater than other devices, even those with fingerprint recognition systems. And because Knock Code™ can be implemented anywhere on the screen in any size without having to view the screen, there’s no chance of password theft. In addition to being safer and more convenient, Knock Code™ is also more responsive compared to bio-recognition systems, which are much more susceptible to variations in the environment.

“LG engineers placed a great amount of emphasis on providing users with exceptional security and convenience when developing Knock Code,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Making Knock Code accessible to a wider audience is consistent with our direction to differentiate LG mobile devices on the basis of user experience.”

Details of availability of the Knock Code™ upgrade will be announced locally in the weeks ahead.

Newest TV Models Boast Compelling New Features

and Unmatched Picture Quality

Logo of LG Electronics

SEOUL, Mar. 11, 2014 — LG Electronics (LG) today introduced its 2014 TV lineup in Korea, unveiling a total of 68 new models including ULTRA HD TVs in sizes ranging from 49 to 105 inches, its largest collection to date. Among its new models is LG’s ground breaking 105-inch Curved ULTRA HD TV in addition to its smaller 65-, 55- and 49-inch curved 4K units. As the first manufacturer to introduce an 84-inch ULTRA HD TV to the world in 2012, LG has consistently upped the ante with first-to-market ULTRA HD and OLED units. New for 2014 is LG’s webOS Smart TV platform, first unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January, which the company expects to set a new standard in the smart TV market for its openness and ease-of-use.

“We are extremely confident that our state-of-the-art ULTRA HD and OLED TV models will establish a new benchmark this year,” said Hyun-hwoi Ha, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “With our strong competitiveness in display technology including ULTRA IPS, CINEMA 3D and the unrivalled simplicity of the webOS Smart TV platform, we are optimistic that in 2014, LG will be the one to watch in the TV industry.”

Ushering in the ULTRA HD Era

LG ULTRA HD TVs incorporate In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels that offer exceptional color accuracy and consistently superb picture quality with minimal color distortion from practically any vantage point. LG’s ULTRA HD Engine Pro offers the processing power necessary to achieve the 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) resolution and a proprietary chip works in conjunction with the engine to eliminate any visual artifacts. LG’s newest ULTRA HD sets all have the ability to upscale standard HD and Full HD content to near 4K quality.

LG’s leading CINEMA 3D technology offers the most immersive viewing experience in the industry, producing a convincingly realistic 3D effect with minimal flicker in 4K resolution. On LG’s larger ULTRA HD units, the effect is even more stunning and impressive and the unique 3D control feature makes it possible to adjust the degree of 3D at the touch of a button. All 2014 ULTRA HD TV models from LG are equipped with an advanced 3D conversion engine for those times when 2D just isn’t enough.

To ensure that its latest models deliver the very best in sound, LG teamed up with Harman Kardon, one of the most respected names in the audio industry. LG’s new ULTRA Surround system, combined with Harman Kardon’s expertise, pulls the viewer deeper into the onscreen action with audio that has never sounded more real.

Expanding the availability of 4K content continues to be a key component of LG’s priorities as an industry leader. The company has teamed up with a number of global content providers such as FOX and Netflix and is working closely with terrestrial, cable and satellite broadcasters to develop more quality 4K content.

Continued Leadership in OLED TV

LG’s comprehensive lineup of 77-, 65- and 55-inch OLED TVs further cements its leadership in what is expected to become the biggest growth segment in the TV industry. LG continues to improve the quality and range of its OLED models while expanding its global production capabilities. To bring the benefits of OLED TV technology to as many consumers as possible, LG is introducing both FULL HD as well as 4K ULTRA HD models.

Added benefits such as eGallery will showcase the rich colors and lifelike features of LG’s OLED TVs. eGallery boasts more than 150 works of mood-enhancing content, including paintings from some of the world’s most renowned artists, gorgeous landscape images, accompanied by beautiful melodies, to turn any living room into a private art gallery.

New Features to Maximize User Convenience

As announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, the simple and intuitive webOS platform will be featured in more than half of TVs including of LG’s ULTRA HD, OLED and CINMEA 3D Smart TVs this year. Its ease-of-use makes content searching and viewing, connecting with other devices, and even the initial setup process incredibly smooth. The first time the user turns on a webOS Smart TV, an inviting, animated character, BeanBird, appears onscreen to help get connected and walk the user through the setup process. And the new, open platform makes it extremely easy for developers to create applications and enhances the compatibility of LG’s Smart TVs with other devices.

LG’s newest TV features brings the company closer to its vision of making the TV the entertainment hub of every living room. Healing Modeuses sound therapy to improve one’s well-being in four different categories — Deep Sleep, Increased Mental Strength, Stress Relief and Refresh. The premium ARTCOOL Stylist sets a high mark for residential air conditioners with its timeless design. The new model effortlessly matches any interior décor — modern, classic or minimalist. Measuring only 121mm deep, LG ARTCOOL Stylist is 25mm slimmer than its predecessor and hangs unobtrusively on any wall. The boldly reimagined unit features a ring of LED lighting that changes colors to indicate cooling or heating status and can also be adjusted to suit any mood or ambience.

LG’s innovative RAC unit emits a soft stream of air in three different directions at the same time. This 3-way Soft Airflow feature distributes air to the sides as well as the floor, providing a pleasant effect that’s soothing and feels more natural than most air conditioners that blow a direct stream of air. What’s more, LG’s advanced inverter technology allows the ARTCOOL Stylist to operate at an incredibly quiet 19dB while consuming less energy than a conventional, non-inverter air conditioner.

For even greater convenience, the ARTCOOL Stylist comes with an equally attractive remote control that features a 3.4-inch touchscreen display in a sleek, rounded design. The advanced controller makes it quick and easy to adjust the settings, including the color and brightness of the LED lighting. The display on the remote also shows useful information such as operating mode, temperature and time.

LG’s ARTCOOL Stylist will be shipping this month to popular retailers across CIS countries, Europe and Africa.

LG G FLEX WINS GOLD AT 2014 IF DESIGN AWARDS

Prestigious Global Design Experts Recognize

Design Excellence in LG’s Latest Products

A back, front and side view of the LG G Flex.

SEOUL, Mar. 3, 2014 ― LG Electronics (LG) found itself in the spotlight once again at the annual iF Design Awards with 26 products earning honors for 2014, including the LG G Flex which was selected as one of the 75 Gold Award winners, and the company’s ULTRA HD TV and flagship G2 smartphone also receiving recognitions. Announced annually by the iF International Forum Design to recognize products that demonstrate excellence and innovation in the field of design, this year’s competition attracted more than 4,600 entries.

“LG has put much emphasis on becoming an industry leader in product design,” said Dr. Scott Ahn, LG’s Chief Technology Officer. “To achieve this, R&D works very closely with design from the onset. Our philosophy is to incorporate innovative designs into our products in order to evoke an emotional response and increase the intimate relationship between our products and consumers.”

The LG G Flex embodies a unique design that demonstrates LG’s cutting-edge capabilities in design and engineering. The G Flex’s ergonomic, vertically curved 6-inch display provides a more comfortable user experience by following the contours of the user’s face and placing the speaker and microphone closer to the ear and mouth. At the same time, the arched form is reassuringly easy to grip. The G Flex was commended by iF judges for implementing a new approach to the smartphone interface by putting controls on the back and adopting a curved display, thereby adding immensely to the smartphone experience in terms of both ergonomics and quality.

iF judges also praised the LG G2 smartphone for its high level of innovation and convenience-oriented design features, particularly its Rear Key which puts the volume and power buttons on the back of the device. As the only smartphone in the world without any buttons on its sides, the distinctive look of the G2 is matched only by its performance. Last year, the G2 took the President’s Award of Good Design, South Korea’s top honor in design excellence.

LG’s ULTRAHD TV (Model 65LA9700) impressed the iF judges with its immersive viewing experience in a package that serves as adécor center piece thanks to its CINEMA SCREEN design and ultra slim bezel. LG also integrated a 4.1 channel Sliding Speaker that automatically retracts when the TV is turned off. This intelligent speaker design, not to mention the lush, high-quality sound from the speakers, makes the 65LA9700 one of LG’s most popular TV models.

Other LG products recognized at the iF Design Awards 2014 include:

–     SoundPlate™ (Model LAP340), a chic sound system wrapped in a thin, flat, minimalist body that can be placed directly under today’s premium TVs

–      Soundbar (Model NB5530) boasts an ultra slim design with a height of only 35mm in a premium black and metallic silver finish to blend into any living room

From left to right; A female model is holding a LG F70 in white color to show its back and another model is trying to show its front.

BARCELONA, Feb. 25, 2014 — Intent on further strengthening its footprint in 4G markets, LG Electronics (LG) unveiled its newest device — the LG F70 — which was unveiled for the first time at the 2014 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona this week. Featuring the latest Android KitKat OS and a Quad-Core processor, the F70 is expected to appeal to millions of new LTE customers around the world.

As a long-time industry leader in LTE patents, LG has led the charge in making 4G devices widely available to a global audience. According to a January report from TechIPM,a research and consulting firm specializing in patents, LG leads the industry in LTE-A Standard Essential Patents with 288 patents registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the European Patent Office, accounting for 23 percent of all patents in the same category.

The F70 features a compact and slim body with a 4.5-inch WVGA IPS display, a 1.2GHz Quad-Core processor, and is powered by a removable 2,440mAh battery that has the largest capacity in its class so users will be able experience the exceptional speed of LTE without having to recharge mid-day. And the F70’s thin bezel and smooth rear design contribute to its ease of usability and comfortable grip. The user-friendly hardware is complemented by the addition of Easy Home, which simplifies the home screen while increasing the size of icons and fonts to make the transition to a smartphone easier for first time users.

LG F70 also comes equipped with LG’s newest advanced UX feature, Knock Code™, an evolution of the popular KnockON feature that was introduced in the LG G2. Knock Code offers greater security as the pattern is entered on a blank screen using anywhere from two to eight taps, allowing for more than 80,000 possible combinations. What’s more, Knock Code can be entered on any part of the display, making one-handed entry effortless and convenient.
