LG OPTIMIZES SMART TV PLATFORM FOR SEAMLESS MULTI-DEVICE COMMUNICATIONS

Irrespective of OS or Brand, AllJoyn Enables Multiple Smartphones, Tablets,
Household Appliances and More to Simultaneously Connect with LG Smart TV

A LG Smart TV and a smartphone operating the AllJoyn open source software framework.

SEOUL, Dec. 4, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) will be the first company to incorporate the AllJoyn open source software framework into its Smart TV platform, giving users a new level of interoperability between devices. AllJoyn, developed by Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc., is designed to create a common language that seamlessly connects the Internet of Things, regardless of brand or operating system (OS). This new multi-device environment opens up a raft of possibilities for LG Smart TV owners.

“LG is at the forefront of the device connectivity revolution,” said Richard Choi, Senior Vice President of the Smart Business Center at LG Electronics. “LG will now enable consumers to more effortlessly connect their networked devices in the home and continues to show a strong commitment to the next generation of convergence technology.”

The software’s framework enables devices and apps to freely communicate with one another without the barriers that once kept operating systems and products from different companies separate. It will afford LG Smart TV users a previously unimaginable degree of freedom and generate new opportunities for app developers as well.

LG will incorporate AllJoyn to allow multiple devices to communicate with LG Smart TVs simultaneously, creating an expansive cross-OS environment where users can interact in new ways. Several smartphones or tablets, each running a completely different OS, can participate in the same multiplayer game on an LG Smart TV. In Mini Motor Racing, one person could steer his or her car around the track using the LG Magic Remote while the other players control their vehicles via the LG Gamepad app for mobile devices. Looking forward, LG will continue to drive future innovation in consumer services that leverage the communication between devices and LG Smart TV’s.

“LG sees great potential and huge possibilities in connecting multiple display products with one TV,” added LG’s Mr. Choi. “Facilitating true smart home convergence, LG Smart TVs will now be able to seamlessly connect to devices regardless of brand or OS, a first-of-its-kind milestone in the home entertainment industry.”

LG Program Promoting Self-Reliance in Africa and Asia Earns United Nations Accolade

Supporting UN’s Millennium Development Goals Through ‘LG Hope Series’

LG was awarded the Millennium Development Goals Award by the UN Global Compact Local Network.

SEOUL, Dec. 4, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) was recently awarded the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals*) Award by UN Global Compact Local Network at their 2013 Global Compact Value Awards Ceremony. LG Electronics received the award in recognition of its global social program, the LG Hope Series. Through this program, LG operates the LG Hope Community in Ethiopia, the LG Hope School in Kenya, the LG Hope Family in Bangladesh and the LG Hope Family in Cambodia to promote sustainable development.

Launched in 2000 and led by UN Secretary-General Ki-moon Ban, the UNGC is an initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies with a particular focus on promoting corporate ethics and environmental sustainability at a global level. Global Compact Value Awards are bestowed biannually by the Local Network to companies that conduct superior CSR activities in each of six major areas: human rights, environment, labor, anti-corruption, community involvement and development and the UN’s core agenda of MDGs.

“LG Electronics is fully committed to the objectives of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, to reduce the proportion of the world population living below the poverty line by half,” said Choong-hak Lee, Senior Vice President and head of LG’s Business Support Office, responsible for corporate social responsibility. “Both the UN and LG realize that poverty is a very complex problem and to address it we need to look at all the factors that affect it, such as education, gender equality, child mortality, diseases, environmental sustainability, among others.”

LG is tackling some of the most challenging issues with the LG Hope Series. Each Hope Series project focuses on specific needs of the local population and attempts to address the causes, not just their effects, with creative, multifaceted solutions.

LG Hope Community

LG is fostering self-sufficiency in farming villages in Guta, an underdeveloped village in Ethiopia in need of external support for water and electricity. In April 2013, LG built a well in Guta to provide the village with drinking water. It also helped mitigate a food shortage and allowed the villagers to generate income from agricultural sales.

The construction of an LG-funded model farm is expected to be complete by December 2013, further helping the residents earn much-needed income. A group of Korean volunteers from Cheonan Yonam College, operated by the LG Yonam Foundation, will also participate in training programs for the cultivation of specialized crops and livestock farming. The goal of the program is to achieve a 50 percent increase in monthly household income.

In collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), LG will begin construction of a new LG Hope Technical and Vocational school in Ethiopia at the end of this year to teach young students sustainable vocational skills as Public Private Partnership (PPP). The school will offer courses on repairing electric and electronic products such as mobile phones, TVs and computers.

LG will also expand scholarships targeting the descendants of Korean War veterans in the region. This scholarship program began in 2012 with the goal of supporting approximately 100 high school students by paying for their living expenses and school tuition for three years.

Earlier this year, LG established a local office in charge of corporate social activities in Ethiopia, a first for a South Korean company. LG will focus on improving the standard of living by making the region self-sustaining, rather than relying on temporary assistance.

LG also has been supporting International Vaccine Institute’s (IVI) vaccine program in Ethiopia since 2010 to stem the spread of acute watery diarrheal disease(AWD). The organizations expect to vaccinate more than 20,000 residents in selected districts of West Arsi Zone in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region by the end of this year

LG Hope School

A new LG Hope School in Kibera, Kenya opened its door to students in August. The school was established in cooperation with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Kenya for the area’s children who lacked adequate studying facilities. The LG Hope School is capable of accommodating 480 students in a nine classroom building equipped with a modern restroom, computer room and kitchen. Since 2009, LG has helped to support 29 schools with school meals, new playgrounds, restrooms and other educational facilities that improve the learning environment.

LG Hope Family

LG Hope Family is a local infrastructure improvement project conducted in partnership with the UN WFP. The project focuses on creating physical, environmental, social and economic resilience and helps extremely impoverished individuals prepare for emergencies and learn to cope during and after a disaster.  Since 2011, LG has contributed nearly USD 1.2 million to support communities in Patharghata, the poorest district in southern Bangladesh. Since the project was launched three years ago, ponds, water ways, embankments, levees and more than 28 kilometers of roads have been developed in Bangladesh.

In Cambodia, LG identified the poorest 5,000 households from Prey Veng Province for participation in road and irrigation canal construction projects to improve living conditions. Contributions from LG provided food assistance in the form of rice, beans and cooking oil to help reduce poverty and food insecurity in the communities.

LG Hope Screen

LG brought this important cause to the people of New York City and London by using its outdoor digital billboards in Manhattan’s Times Square and Piccadilly Square as educational displays. Earlier this year, the Piccadilly Square display featured World Environment Day sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and a matching gift campaign was conducted via the Times Square billboard with proceeds going to the WFP.

* Adopted in 2000, the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are international pledges to reduce the world population living below the poverty line by half by 2015. The eight international development goals are: 1) eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; 2) achieve universal primary education; 3) promote gender equality and empowering women; 4) reduce child mortality rates; 5) improve maternal health; 6) combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases; 7) ensure environmental sustainability; 8) develop a global partnership for development.

LG G2, DESIGNED WITH ENVIRONMENT IN MIND, EARNS UL ENVIRONMENT AND CARBONFREE® CERTIFICATIONS

Certifications Further Enhance Award-Winning Smartphone’s Credentials,
Highlight Company’s Environmentally-Conscious Initiatives

Clockwise from upper left; Logo of LG Electronics, the certificate of Carbonfund.org, the certificate of Repeat and the certificate of ECOLOGO.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Dec. 2, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) has earned key sustainability certifications from UL Environment and the Carbonfund.org Foundation for the award-winning LG G2 smartphone, further validating the company’s global strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and develop products with an eye towards the environment.

The LG G2 has been ECOLOGO® Certified under UL Environment’s sustainability standard for mobile phones, the foundation of the new mobile phone category planned for the Green Electronics Council’s global EPEAT® Registry for products with greener features. The new smartphone also earned the CarbonFree® label that connotes a carbon-neutral product.

“Achieving these important certifications further validates the efforts we have made to reduce our carbon footprint and provides consumers important information they can trust,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, president and chief technology officer, LG Electronics Inc. “Our commitment to environmental sustainability with the LG G2 shows that, with LG, it’s all possible.”

The LG G2 achieved the CarbonFree recognition after a comprehensive analysis that determined the carbon footprint of the smartphone throughout its lifecycle, spanning from manufacturing and shipment to usage and ultimately, disposal. The CarbonFree certification program distinguishes products that have undergone a rigorous third-party process that involves determining a product’s carbon footprint, reducing it where possible and offsetting remaining emissions.

Eric Carlson, president of the Carbonfund.org Foundation, applauded LG’s commitment to making and promoting carbon neutral products and following rigorous third-party standards. “LG’s commitment to addressing environmental concerns with the LG G2 is further proof that what’s good for the environment is also good business,” he said.

UL’s ECOLOGO Certification to the UL 110 (Sustainability for Mobile Phones) standard is based on the environmental and human health aspects of a mobile phone’s entire lifecycle. This way, manufacturers, retailers and purchasers looking for sustainable mobile devices have an easy way to identify them, according to UL.

Sara Greenstein, president of UL Environment, said, “UL’s ECOLOGO certification to the UL 110 standard empowers product manufacturers like LG to clearly demonstrate their commitment to measuring and communicating their product’s environmental performance. UL recognizes reduced environmental impact for products like the LG G2 to ensure that the marketplace has access to recognizably healthier, more sustainable devices.”

The UL 110 standard is at the heart of a new mobile phone category being developed for EPEAT, a third-party green-rating system that evaluates products on a lifecycle basis, addressing their design for recycling, elimination of toxic substances, use of recycled and recyclable materials, product longevity, energy efficiency, corporate performance and packaging, among other attributes. EPEAT is used as an environmental purchasing requirement by eight national governments, including the United States, as well as by educational and healthcare systems and multinational corporations.

Robert Frisbee, CEO of the Green Electronics Council, said the quick evolution and short lifecycle of mobile products “presents a clear opportunity to reduce their environmental impact. By meeting the UL 110 standard, the LG G2 is poised for success as stakeholders continue moving toward the creation of an EPEAT mobile phone category.”

The LG G2 features an innovative rear-key design for easy, natural handling. Boasting a 5.2-inch Full HD near edge-to-edge display, the LG G2 is a powerful smartphone that brings together the best of mobile technology. The LG G2 is built with the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 Processor for fast-paced multitasking and a suite of intuitive features like Answer Me and KnockON, creating the ultimate mobile companion for work and play. With a 13-megapixel camera with Optical Image Stabilization, the LG G2 also captures crystal clear photos and videos, whether shooting in low-light conditions or fast-moving events.

One of the hottest new smartphones on the market, the LG G2 has been receiving accolades world over and was recentlychosen by a leading consumer magazine as the only Android device among its top 10 electronic products of 2013.

LG TONE ULTRA DELIVERS PREMIUM AUDIO EXPERIENCE

New Bluetooth Headset Boasts ANC Technology and Ergonomic Design

A front view of LG TONE ULTRA (HBS-800) in black color with its earphones pulled out.

SEOUL, Nov. 28, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced the newest version of its popular Bluetooth stereo headset, LG TONE ULTRA (HBS-800). This feature-packed model is the worthy successor to the LG TONE (HBS-700/730), a top-seller with more than two million units sold since its introduction in 2010.

The TONE ULTRA was developed specifically to provide a superior audio experience with eyebrow-raising stereo sound. By adopting noise reduction – also known as ambient noise cancellation (ANC) – technology, the TONE ULTRA blocks out background noise, allowing the listener to focus on the music or conversation without distractions.

In fact, Golden Ears, an audio equipment evaluation site, rated TONE ULTRA highly for its impressive audio performance. Golden Ears remarked that among the myriad of wireless earphones on the market, TONE ULTRA was its top choice for “providing a perceptibly improved audio experience.”

And LG’s unique around-the neck design has also been improved in the TONE ULTRA. By adopting the ergonomic 3D Neck Behind design of previous models, TONE ULTRA is designed with comfort in mind. Earlier this year, TONE ULTRA received a 2013 Red Dot Design Award in recognition of the product’s ergonomics and aesthetic appeal. Judges were particularly impressed with the memory alloy, which allows the TONE ULTRA to return to its original form no matter how roughly it’s treated.

What’s more, TONE ULTRA can be paired with any Bluetooth-supported device, including smartphones, tablet PCs and laptops. A clever multiple access function allows two Bluetooth devices to connect to the TONE ULTRA simultaneously.

Both black and white versions of TONE ULTRA will be available in the United States and China by the end of the month. TONE ULTRA will roll out in parts of Europe, Asia and the Middle East throughout the month of December.

LG ELECTRONICS LAUNCHES ANDROID DEVELOPERS’ DEVICE LOANER PROGRAM

New LG Program Gives Android Developers Easy Access to

LG Tools and Support, Latest Loaner Devices, New SDKs

Many developers attending the LG Android Developers’ Workshop.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 4, 2013 — LG Electronics, the maker of LG G2 and Nexus 5 smartphones, is expanding its LG Android Developers’ Program with a new device loaner program that officially launches today.
The loaner program was previewed at last week’s LG Android Developers’ VIP event in San Francisco, where a new software development kit (SDK), the LG QRemote SDK, was officially introduced.
The hundreds of developers who attended the LG Android Developers’ Workshop had the opportunity to experience the award-winning new LG G2 superphone, check out the LG QRemote SDK and learn more about the overall LG Android Developers’ Program.
“When multiple developers followed up after the event, thanking LG for ‘doing it right,’ we know we’re giving them what they want,” said Cecilia Son, LG’s head of mobile developer relations in North America. “By providing the Android developer community with a new SDK and the latest LG devices to test their apps on, we’re living up to our brand promise, ‘with LG, it’s all possible.’ We’re giving them the tools to help inspire some great new apps — ones we expect to see on the LG App Store very soon.”
The new LG Device Loaner Program for Android developers consists of a simple three-step process: registration on the LG Device Loaner Program website (http://goo.gl/Xa7A3L), completion of a brief order form designating the desired LG device, and return shipping at the conclusion of the 30-day loan period. The LG device loaner program is provided free of charge to the developer community, with the excep-tion of return shipping costs that are covered by the developer.
Supporting the hot new flagship LG G2 superphone and other LG Android devices, the new LG QRemote SDK (http://developer.lge.com) contains the library, documentation and sample codes that enable developers to create their QuickRemote apps to control multiple electronic devices such as TVs, cable set-top-boxes and audio systems, and even air conditioners. This SDK provides developers with open apps necessary to develop IR (infrared) remote sensor-enabled applications.
Developers can create the customized IR remote control apps for certain groups of people such as children or seniors and also add a macro button that enables both TV and cable set-top-box to power on with just one click.
The LG G2 — available on all major U.S. carrier networks — offers a perfect blend of intuitive design, intelligent features and powerful software that empowers consumers to make the most out of their desired smartphone experience. With user-friendly LG features like QuickRemote, owners can easily use G2 as a remote control for TVs, appliances and other devices.
The LG G2 is a stylish and pocket-friendly device with a super-slim body for comfortable one-hand gripping and an expansive 5.2-inch Full HD IPS display delivering near edge-to-edge viewing. For the personal photo enthusiast, LG G2 is equipped with a unique rear-key that makes snapping selfies easier than ever and an impressive 13 megapixel Full HD camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for ensuring every close up is blur-free without having to pause when in motion.

LG UNVEILS WORLD’S FIRST “REAL” CURVED SMARTPHONE

LG G Flex Stays Ahead of the Curve to Lead Evolution
of Smartphones with Breakthrough Innovations
The LG G Flex’s front, side and rear view.
SEOUL, Oct. 28, 2013 — Setting a new milestone in the evolution of the smartphone, LG Electronics (LG) today officially took the wraps off the LG G Flex, a smartphone curved to follow the contour of the face, the first device to offer such a design in the smartphone market. The latest device in LG’s premium G Series, the G Flex incorporates proprietary innovations from other LG companies in the form of the display and battery that have never been seen before. The LG G Flex also boasts new user experience (UX) features that take advantage of the curved form factor.

“The LG G Flex is the best representation yet of how a smartphone should be curved,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The LG G Flex with its distinctive design, innovative hardware and consumer-centric UX represents the most significant development in the smartphone space since smartphone became part of our regular vocabulary.”

Form + Function: Design that Understands Human Curves

The vertically curved design of the LG G Flex reduces the distance between one’s mouth to the microphone when the device is held against the ear, as traditional telephone handsets used to. The LG G Flex employs a curvature arc that is optimized for the average face, to deliver improved voice and sound quality. The curved form increases the sound level by 3dB compared to typical flat smartphones. The curved design also offers a more reassuring grip and fits more comfortably in one’s back pocket. What’s more, in landscape mode, the display offers an immersive, cinematic experience, with the result being the most comfortable viewing angle for watching videos or playing games.

LG G Flex also features the Rear Key first introduced in the LG G2. Devoid of any buttons on the sides, there is less chance of accidentally powering off the phone and the convenience of using one’s index finger to adjust the volume when conversing is maintained.

Innovation Delivered Through Collaboration

The development of LG G Flex was only possible through the successful collaboration with sister companies LG Display and LG Chem. The 6-inch display found in the G Flex is the world’s largest Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display developed and mass produced specifically for smartphones. The ultra-thin, ultra-light flexible P-OLED display and curved OLED panel are built on plastic substrates instead of glass, giving LG G Flex its unique shape and durability. The P-OLED display is brighter and more precise thanks to the application of Real RGB, which contains all three sub-pixels — red, green and blue — in one pixel.

LG Chem developed the world’s first curved battery technology specifically for application in LG G Flex. The curved battery in the G Flex is designed with LG Chem’s patented Stack & Folding technology, which reduces the physical stress on the battery pack when in the curved form and provides better stability and performance. Despite its thin form, the LG G Flex battery has a capacity of 3,500mAh, enough power for more than a full day of use.

User-Centered Technologies

Among the several new technologies, the LG G Flex is the first smartphone to apply a “Self Healing” coating on the back cover. The elastic coating has the ability to recover from the daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks that un-cased smartphones are likely to receive, keeping the G Flex looking newer longer.

Users of LG G Flex will have a wider selection in the ability to enjoy in various format of music — MP3, CD quality or 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback. UX features, such as KnockON, Guest Mode and Plug & Pop, which were positively received when first introduced in the LG G2, can also found in the LG G Flex. The LG G Flex also includes an array of new UX features:

– QTheater gives users quick access to photos, videos and YouTube right from the lock screen. By touching the screen and dragging outward along the curved surface with both fingers, the apps appear with the effect of theater curtains being drawn.

– Dual Window divides the wide 6-inch screen into two separate windows for more effective multitasking.

– Swing Lockscreen alters the image on the lockscreen depending on how the G Flex is held.

– Face Detection Indicator displays the LED on the Rear Key in green to confirm status of face detection and focus.

– Camera Timer flashes the Rear Key LED to indicate that the countdown has begun.

– Urgent Call Alert flashes the LED on the Rear Key in red when several consecutive calls from the same person go unanswered.

The LG Flex will be available in Korea starting in November through all three major local carriers. Availability in additional markets will be announced thereafter.
