Sales of Mobile Devices Increase 24 Percent From Same Period Previous Year

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Oct. 24, 2013 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced third-quarter 2013 consolidated revenues of KRW 13.89 trillion (USD 12.51 billion). While competitive conditions in the TV sector and an unfavorable foreign currency exchange rate affected overall revenues compared with the 2012 third quarter, sales of mobile devices increased year-over-year by 24 percent. LG saw a 27 percent increase in third-quarter operating profit to KRW 217.80 billion (USD 196.34 million) compared with the same period last year.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported revenues of KRW 5.01 trillion (USD 4.50 billion), a 7 percent decline from the same period a year ago, reflecting slower global TV demand and lower selling prices. Higher sales in developing markets such as Asia and the CIS region were offset by softness in Europe. Operating profit of KRW 124.40 billion (USD 111.68 million) increased both year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter as a result of more efficient management of operating and marketing expense. As it enters the holiday selling season, LG plans to expand global sales of premium products such as OLED TVs and Ultra HD TVs while continuing to carefully manage costs.

The LG Mobile Communications Company’s third-quarter revenues increased by 24 percent compared with the same quarter a year ago to KRW 3.05 trillion (USD 2.75 billion). The company shipped 12 million smartphones in the third quarter but profitability and average selling price were affected by increased competition and higher marketing investments. LG plans to focus on increasing sales of new premium products such as the LG G2 smartphone during the peak holiday season as well as maximizing 3G and mid-tier mass devices such as the L II Series and F Series.

The LG Home Appliance Company recorded revenues of KRW 2.97 trillion (USD 2.68 billion), up 3 percent from the previous year largely due to the positive reception of its new washing machines and refrigerators. LG appliance sales increased in North America and China but slowed in developing markets. Despite higher overall revenues and improved cost structure, third-quarter operating profit decreased from the same period last year to KRW 109.20 billion (USD 98.17 million) primarily due to unfavorable foreign exchange movements.

The LG Air Conditioning and Energy Solutions Company reported relatively flat third-quarter sales and operating profit margin year-over-year with revenues of KRW 973 billion (USD 876.32 million). While increased R&D investments and weak global market conditions will continue to impact the business, the company will focus on growing its market share of non-seasonal products and higher-margin products such as new commercial air conditioning systems.

LG WASHING MACHINES CERTIFIED FOR NEW UL ‘WATER FOOTPRINT INVENTORY’

Lifecycle Analysis Examines Water Consumption at Every Stage

Chris Jung, president of Home Appliances at LG USA, and Sara Greenstein, president of UL Environment, holding the UL Environment certification for LG’s ultra large-capacity front-load washing machine

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Sept. 25, 2013 ㅡ Breaking new ground for home appliances, washing machines from LG Electronics are the first in the world to be certified for the new Water Footprint Inventory being launched by UL Environment, a business unit of UL (Underwriters Laboratories).

The new certification reflects the commitment by LG, as a responsible manufacturer, to understand the impact of manufacturing and product lifecycles on natural resources, particularly in light of increasing global concerns around water and water scarcity. LG is believed to be the first major appliance manufacturer to track water use through the entire lifecycle of a product.

LG’s ultra-large-capacity WM8000HVA and WM8000HWA front-load washers have undergone an extensive lifecycle water footprint inventory analysis, examining water use from component and packaging production, product assembly, product usage and disposal. UL Environment is leading the way in product verifications based on draft International Organization of Standardization (ISO) principles and guidelines for water footprinting of products, processes and organizations (ISO 14046).

“Since water is a global resource, we are all affected by and responsible for how it is used and managed,” said Sara Greenstein, president of UL Environment. “UL Environment’s water footprint inventory provides a tool for companies like LG to evaluate and address this important environmental metric for its products.”

Based on ISO 14046 analysis, UL Environment certified that water consumption from the washer’s pre-manufacturing stage represents about 37 percent of lifecycle water consumption, which will help LG identify processes and materials to reduce water consumption. The consumer usage stage of the washer’s lifecycle accounts for about 53 percent of overall water consumption, underscoring the importance of continuing to develop products that use less water.

Chris Jung, president, Home Appliances, LG Electronics USA, said, “The UL Water Footprint Inventory is a key design reference, and the results of the analysis show how important it is to track water over the life cycle of the product and not just the usage phase. LG is proud to be a pioneer in the water footprinting area and will use this data to improve the water-efficiency of our products.”

LG’s WM8000 washers are designed for a high-performance, efficient washing experience, having earned the coveted ENERGY STAR® “Most Efficient” 2013 designation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This means the washer is recognized among those that qualify for the ENERGY STAR and represents the leading edge in energy efficient products. In fact, a washer with this designation can save consumers the equivalent of at least 74,000 bottles of water a year, compared with conventional non-ENERGY STAR certified washers. This model also features LG’s innovative TurboWash™ technology that can save 20 minutes per load, while still offering outstanding cleaning performance.

The first certification under UL’s new Water Footprint Inventory is just one example of LG’s leadership in developing products with the environment in mind without sacrificing performance or style. The LG WM8000HVA/WM8000HWA washers also are the first to meet the “2013 Sustainability Standard for Household Clothes Washers” developed by UL Environment, CSA Group, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers and other stakeholders. This new sustainability standard identifies a product’s environmental impacts in six key areas: materials, manufacturing and operations, energy and water consumption during use, innovation, use of consumables, and end-of-life management.

More than 70 LG products across multiple categories – from washing machines and refrigerators to televisions and air conditioners – have earned the 2013 ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation so far this year. In addition, with a total of 32 certified products, LG is a key participant in the CarbonFree® Product Certification program, which verifies the GHG emissions associated with a product’s life cycle and provides certification to products offering carbon offsetting and GHG reduction.

LG REVEALS AGGRESSIVE STRATEGY FOR NEXT GENERATION TV MARKET

Accelerating the Global Rollout of OLED and ULTRA HD TVs
High on LG’s Agenda for Growing its Global TV Market Share

Mr. Kwon Hee-Won, president and CEO of LG Electronics’ Home Entertainment Company, speaking at IFA 2013.

BERLIN, Sep. 9, 2013 At IFA 2013 in Berlin, the chief executive of LG’s Home Entertainment Company revealed that the company will expand the global rollout of its OLED TVs to several markets throughout Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the CIS region before the end of the year. Moreover, the company’s 55- and 65-inch ULTRA HD TVs — the first ever models to be equipped with HEVC decoders — will be launched in 50 countries this year and LG will expand its strategic cooperative efforts with broadcasters and other partners to accelerate the growth of ULTRA HD content.

“With the demand for OLED TV and ULTRA HD TV expected to grow rapidly next year, the competition to gain supremacy in the next generation TV market will be fierce,” said Mr. Kwon, president and CEO of the LG Electronics’ Home Entertainment Company. “LG will leverage its strong position and further consolidate its global TV business by speeding up the launch dates of its OLED TVs in a number of core markets. We will also introduce an expanded lineup of ULTRA HD TVs and deliver a comprehensive, differentiated smart TV user experience.”

Market Dominance via Expanded OLED TV Rollout

LG marked another milestone by unveiling world’s largest ULTRA HD OLED TV at IFA. Spanning a total of 77 inches diagonally, the massive curved screen fills the viewer’s field of vision more completely than a flat-screen TV. The ULTRA HD CURVED OLED TV combines LG’s exceptional WRGB OLED and ULTRA HD technologies, enabling it to produce infinite contrast ratio and resolution four times greater than regular FULL HD. LG will introduce its advanced ULTRA HD OLED TV technology to consumers in 2014.

Consumers can already experience LG’s innovative OLED TVs in South Korea, the United States and Europe. More consumers will be able to experience LG’s innovative technology with the rollout of LG OLED TV in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the CIS region later this year. In order to quickly expand the OLED TV market, LG plans to sell its groundbreaking TVs not only in department stores and luxury retailers but also large consumer electronics chains with national networks.

Through the continuous development of innovative technologies, LG will solidify its position as a provider of “first ever” products. The company intends to expand its industry leading OLED TV lineup, complementing its 55-inch CURVED OLED TV with the wall mountable GALLERY OLED TV. Furthermore, LG is hard at work developing OLED TVs with ULTRA HD picture quality in screen sizes greater than 70 inches.

Accelerating the ULTRA HD TV Market

By introducing a comprehensive range of ULTRA HD TVs, LG will give consumers more choice and invigorate the global next generation TV market. The new premium and affordably priced 55- and 65-inch ULTRA HD TV series are scheduled to launch in 50 countries before the end of 2014.

LG’s ULTRA HD TVs are the first in the world to feature HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) decoders. This makes it possible to view ULTRA HD content without an external decoding device, such as a set-top box. The built-in decoder also means that a USB drive or any other peripheral containing 4K content can be connected to a LG ULTRA HD TV to seamlessly plan stunning ULTRA HD movies and videos.

And LG is stepping up its efforts to expand the availability of ULTRA HD content in close cooperation with broadcasters. It is also forming alliances with content distributors to expand the supply of high quality ULTRA HD entertainment and collaborating with respected artists on cutting-edge multimedia projects.

The exciting ULTRA HD TV market will be driven by LG’s differentiated competitiveness, which includes IPS panel and CINEMA 3D technology. Complementing ULTRA HD picture quality with superior sound quality, LG is increasing its R&D investments in audio technology as well as sourcing the best new sound solutions through its relationships with other leading companies.

Smart TV UX

LG will also increase the market share of LG’s smart TVs by expanding compatibility with web-based applications and by strengthening LG’s involvement in the Smart TV Alliance.

With its improved, intuitive Smart TV platform, LG will provide a user experience (UX) that boasts unparalleled ease-of-use and connectivity. LG’s Smart TV platform is designed around the S2R2 strategy, which represents the core strengths of the company’s Smart TV user experience. This strategy will focus on the four components of LG’s Smart TV user experience: Search, Sharing, Recommending and Recording.

LG will give users access to an even greater breadth of outstanding content via strategic partnerships with content providers and broadcasters, including major European players, RAI and BSkyB. LG will bolster its Smart TV game offerings with popular titles from noted publishers including Activision, Disney and even cloud-based gaming services.

“LG was proud to be the first company to commercially launch an OLED TV and we are once again setting our sights high with the ULTRA HD CURVED OLED TV,” said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company. “This 77-inch TV is proof that we will never stop pushing the boundaries and exploring new possibilities.”

Currently the largest OLED TV in the world, LG’s 77-inch ULTRA HD CURVED OLED TV is also LG’s most advanced next-generation TV to date. Spanning a total of 77 inches diagonally, the massive curved screen fills the viewer’s field of vision more completely than a flat-screen TV. The ULTRA HD CURVED OLED TV combines LG’s exceptional WRGB OLED and ULTRA HD technology, enabling it to produce infinite contrast ratio and resolution four times greater than regular FULL HD . Unmatched in picture quality, this enormous, futuristic-looking TV is “a true home entertainment wonder that has to be seen to be believed,” Kwon said.

Visitors to IFA 2013 can see LG’s beautiful 77-inch ULTRA HD CURVED OLED TV for themselves by visiting Hall 11.2 at Messe Berlin.

ULTIMATE PICTURE QUALITY WITH FULL LINEUP OF NEXT GENERATION LG TVS AT IFA 2013

LG Expands its Industry Leading Collection of OLED TVs and ULTRA HD TVs
Offering Differentiated Home Entertainment Solutions Three visitors view two rows of LG’s CURVED OLED TVs on show at IFA 2013.

BERLIN, Sep. 5, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) is driving the evolution of technology and design in the exciting next generation TV market. At IFA 2013 in Berlin, LG is showcasing its comprehensive range of advanced TVs equipped with incredible picture quality, stunning design and innovative technologies. The lineup includes the CURVED OLED TV (Model 55EA9800), the artistically inspired GALLERY OLED TV (Model 55EA8800), an upgraded version of the 84-inch ULTRA HD TV (Model 84LA9800) and more affordable 55- and 65-inch ULTRA HD TVs (LA9650 Series).

“We feel that IFA 2013 is the perfect opportunity to show Europe and the world just how committed we are to leading the next generation TV market,” said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company. “It is a point of pride that we were able to bring a CURVED OLED TV and an ULTRA HD TV to market before the competition and we will continue to expand and improve our industry leading television technology.”

World’s First: LG CURVED OLED TV

First showcased at CES 2013 and already available in South Korea, US and Germany, LG’s groundbreaking CURVED OLED TV marks the beginning of a whole new era in home entertainment. Its panoramic curvature guarantees an amazingly immersive and comfortable viewing experience and thanks to LG’s WRGB OLED technology, the 55EA9800 features infinite contrast ratio with deeper blacks and brighter whites than a conventional RGB display. Furthermore, the screen delivers incredible color accuracy regardless of ambient light or viewing angle.

Only 4.3mm (0.17 inches) thin and weighing just 17kg (37.48 pounds), the CURVED OLED TV is simply stunning to behold. The breathtaking, modern design of the 55EA9800 features the flowing, almost transparent Crystal Stand. LG’s forward-facing Clear Speakers are unobtrusively incorporated into the Crystal Stand to deliver flawless audio with remarkable fidelity in the mid- to high-frequency ranges.

True Masterpiece: GALLERY OLED TV

Also on display at this year’s IFA is the latest addition to LG’s acclaimed OLED TV series —the art inspired 55-inch GALLERY OLED TV. This first ever wall mountable OLED TV illustrates the company’s ability to create differentiated, well designed home entertainment solutions.

The elegant art frame cleverly and seamlessly conceals a powerful 2.2 channel speakers. Gallery Mode enables owners to enjoy high resolution digital images of iconic paintings and personal photos when the TV is not in use. As with all of LG’s innovative OLED TVs, the 55EA8800 employs proprietary WRGB OLED picture technology for vivid, lifelike colors with a wide viewing angle.

Sharpest Picture Quality: ULTRA HD TV

LG ULTRA HD TVs deliver a strong combination of astonishing picture quality — four times the resolution of Full HD TV — and stunning sound. Following the introduction of the world’s first 84-inch and premium 55- and 65-inch ULTRA HD TVs (LA9700 Series), LG is now unveiling at IFA 2013 more affordable 55- and 65-inch units (LA9650 Series) and an upgraded version of its 84-inch ULTRA HD TV (84LA9800) .

Both the LA9650 and LA9700 series feature a built-in HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) decoder, which can play Ultra HD content directly from a USB flash drive, an industry first. Thanks to LG’s Tru-ULTRA HD Engine, these TVs can upscale any type of content to near UHD quality to deliver incredible Ultra HD picture quality with a 178-degree viewing angle and sharp, blur-free images. The LA9700 series goes a step further with NANO FULL LED backlighting for improved contrast, brightness and color consistency.

What’s more, the LA9700 units are equipped with a 4.1 channel, 50W audio system with forward-facing Sliding Speaker while the LA9650 TVs come with speakers mounted on either side of the screen. The 84LA9800 boasts a 2.2 channel, 310W audio system with speakers on both sides of the immense screen for a true cinema quality experience.

Visitors to LG’s booth at IFA 2013 will be able to enjoy works of art by artists such as Romero Britto and Yang-min Ha displayed on LG’s ULTRA HD TVs. The marriage of art and technology is perfectly illustrated on LG’s lineup of next generation TV products at this year’s IFA.

Awards and Certifications

LG’s next generation OLED TV has received a number of awards and certifications from prestigious organizations over the past year. LG’s CURVED OLED TV has been honored with the European Design TV 2013-2014 award from EISA and the Red Dot: Best of the Best award. It has also received picture quality certifications from respected organizations such as TÜV Rheinland, Intertek, VDE, Intertek and Underwrites Laboratories (UL) and became the first OLED TV to acquire THX certification.

All of LG’s next generation TV products will be on display at IFA 2013 in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin.

LG UNVEILS LATEST RANGE OF ENERGY EFFICIENT REFRIGERATORS AT IFA 2013

Equipped with Door-in-Door™ and Inverter Linear Compressor,

LG’s New Refrigerators Lead the Industry in Innovation

Front view of LG’s side-by-side refrigerator

BERLIN, Sep. 5, 2013 — At IFA 2013 in Berlin, LG Electronics (LG) is showcasing its latest lineup of side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators which offer consumers more energy savings and convenience than ever before.

LG’s side-by-side refrigerators are equipped with convenience enhancing features such as Door-in-Door™ for quick access to favorite snacks and drinks. Door-in-Door™ comes with handy customizable basket sections, enabling family members to have their very own storage compartments. The energy efficient bottom-freezer models incorporate the Total No Frost feature, which offers faster and more even cooling to keep food fresh even longer. And LG’s convenient Smart Diagnosis™ provides consumers with a quick and effective way to troubleshoot any issues with their units. These new refrigerators deliver even reliability and energy efficiency thanks to LG’s powerful Inverter Linear Compressor, which comes with a 10-year warranty.

“When selecting home appliances, European consumers look for a combination of performance, user convenience and energy efficiency,” said Seong-jin Jo, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “We’re confident that our newest lineup of advanced refrigerator models will prove popular with European consumers.”

Door-in-Door

LG’s highly convenient Door-in-Door™ makes it easier to reach frequently sought after food and beverage items and also helps reduce cold air loss from escaping the main refrigerator compartment. By helping to reduce temperature fluctuations that occur whenever the refrigerator door is opened, the Door-in-Door™ helps to keep food fresh longer.

Inverter Linear Compressor

LG’s proprietary Inverter Linear Compressor enables the refrigerators to provide industry leading energy efficiency and food freshness, reduced noise levels and durability. In comparison to a reciprocating drive system, the company’s piston-driven compressor generates less internal friction and offers more precise cooling control, which ensures lower energy consumption. The Inverter Linear Compressor comes with a 10-year parts warranty.

Total No Frost

LG’s newest refrigerators are also equipped with a Total No Frost feature. Most conventional internal-airflow systems disperse cool air inconsistently. LG’s advanced design guarantees even cooling throughout the refrigerator’s entire interior. Thanks to the new Multi Air Flow system, lunch meat stored on the top shelf of the fridge will stay just as cool as vegetables kept on the bottom shelf. Total No Frost cools down warm food much faster than other refrigerators and is more energy efficient than other internal-airflow systems.

Smart Diagnosis™

If an LG refrigerator experiences any problems, the Smart Diagnosis™ feature allows call center representatives to quickly diagnose the issue over the phone. What’s more, the Smart Diagnosis™ smartphone app allows homeowners to record and analyze signals from the refrigerator for immediate advice on repair options. An effective means of troubleshooting potential issues, Smart Diagnosis™ is the ideal solution for today’s busy customers who don’t have the time to waste on costly, inconvenient service visits.

Convenience-enhancing Features

LG’s bottom-freezer refrigerators come with a number of convenience-enhancing features that make consumers’ lives easier. The lattice-type box cover of the Moist Balance Crisper™ improves moisture retention, helping to boost the longevity of food items. Located in the main refrigerator compartment, the convenient Fresh 0 Zone is an ideal place to store meats and fish, as users can access these oft-used items immediately without having to freeze and thaw them. For smaller kitchens, the Zero Clearance door can be opened to a 90-degree angle even if the refrigerator is placed close to a wall. In this position all drawers can be fully extended, making access to food much easier.

And finally, the sleek, attractive Easy Open Handle makes it possible to open the refrigerator door with a minimal amount of effort. Another impressive feature is LG’s Non-Plumed Ice & Water, which adds a new level of convenience to the water and ice dispensers. Users can simply pour water into a tank, no installation or external water connection hoses are required and there are no filters to change. The Non-Plumed Ice & Water ensures that the family has access to convenient, hassle-free water and ice at all times.

LG SHOWCASES LATEST BIG CAPACITY WASHING MACHINES AND NEW ECO-HYBRID PRODUCTS AT IFA 2013

LG’s 6 Motion Direct Drive Equipped Washers and Dryers

with New Eco Hybrid Technology Save Energy, Water and Time

Front view of the LG 12kg front-load washing machine

BERLIN, Sep. 5, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) is showcasing its new range of 12kg big capacity washing machines and its new Eco-Hybrid washer-dryers and dryers at IFA 2013. The washing machines boast LG’s proprietary 6 Motion Direct Drive and TrueSteam™ technologies, ensuring powerful and hygienic washing performance. LG’s 12kg big capacity washing machines are 40 percent more energy efficient than other LG A+++ washing machines. Moreover, LG’s new washer-dryers equipped with innovative Eco-Hybrid technology offer a new Air-drying system in addition to normal drying modes. Each finely tuned setting has been optimized to achieve energy efficiency with water or time saving.

“LG’s highly acclaimed washing machines provide both strong and delicate performance for consumer benefits,” said Seong-jin Jo, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “They can wash larger loads while using less energy and water, which is what consumers have been asking for. What’s more, our new Eco-Hybrid washer-dryers allow homeowners to better manage electricity and water consumption for lower utility bills and less environmental impact. There are absolutely no compromises.”

LG’s advanced 6 Motion Direct Drive motor uses a combination of six different motions to deliver customized washes for various types of clothes with fewer wrinkles and less damage. In addition, thanks to the Inverter Direct Drive motor, LG washers perform quietly and reliably. LG backs the durability and reliability of its Inverter Direct Drive motor with a 10-year warranty while VDE[1], Germany’s scientific and technical association, evaluated and certified that the Inverter Direct Drive had a lifespan of 22 years.

LG’s front–load washing machine also incorporates the unique TrueSteam™ technology, which includes the Steam Refresh function. Instead of water, steam is used to remove wrinkles and odors from clothes in just 20 minutes, leaving deep clean results. Moreover, LG’s TrueSteam™ technology helps to remove allergens, mites and even residual detergent, all of which have been linked to respiratory and skin allergies. In recognition of these features, LG’s steam washer has been certified by the British Allergy Foundation.

Eco-Hybrid Washer-Dryer

LG’s Eco-Hybrid washer-dryers provide users with both Air-drying and normal drying modes, whereas most washing machines only offer one or the other. Each of these convenient and efficient options delivers A-grade energy savings. Compared with LG conventional drying modes, LG’s powerful Air-drying setting can save users nearly 7,000liters of water per year.[2]

At 24-inch standard size, LG’s Eco-Hybrid washer-dryer boasts the world’s first 12kg washing capacity and 8kg drying capacity, effectively reducing a household’s washing frequency by approximately 91 washes per year.[3]Moreover, LG’s innovative new Dual Ball Balancer and Damping System help to maintain load balance and reduce noise created by internal vibrations.

Eco-Hybrid Dryer

LG’s Eco-Hybrid dryer features an Eco mode and a Speed mode, letting the owner choose between optimal energy and time savings. Using sophisticated heat pump technology, Eco mode achieves A++ energy efficiency. Speed mode also provides energy efficiency, with an A grade while taking 30 percent less time[4] to complete a cycle. An ideal solution for delicate items, LG’s Eco-Hybrid dryers can dry clothes even at low temperatures, reducing fabric damage and shrinkage.

These advanced dryers are also equipped with LG’s unique Auto Cleaning System, which cleans the dryer’s condenser up to seven times per cycle. Built to stand up to repeated usage, this durable system optimizes energy efficiency as well as drying performance. Moreover, any build-up of lint in the condenser over time is also reduced.
