LG’s Futuristic TV Receives Europe’s Most Prestigious TV Award

The European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) Awards logo next to a right-side view of the LG CURVED OLED TV model 55EA9800.

SEOUL, Aug. 15, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) enjoyed notable success at this year’s European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) Awards, being recognized with the 2013-2014 European Design TV accolade for its CURVED OLED TV (Model 55EA9800). Featuring a gently curved, cinematic screen, LG’s revolutionary CURVED OLED TV is truly an eye-catching work of art. The stunningly slim design of the 4mm thin CURVED OLED TV is directly related to LG’s ongoing efforts to commercialize OLED technology for large screen displays.

The ergonomic curve of LG’s groundbreaking TV produces a more immersive viewing experience. In large part, the elegant ultra-thin TV owes its exceptional aesthetics to the properties of OLED technology. LG’s proprietary WRGB OLED produces the most lifelike colors and an infinite contrast ratio, guaranteeing picture quality that is beyond the imagination. A Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) back cover supports and protects the thin 55-inch screen while also contributing to the unit’s light weight.

“It’s always an honor to be recognized by an association as well regarded as EISA,” said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “This awardis an acknowledgement of LG’s success in bringing innovative designs and technologies into the homes of today’s discerning consumers.”

What’s more, the transparent design of the Crystal Stand makes it appear as if the 55-inch CURVED OLED TV is floating on air, helping to further immerse the viewer in the TV’s picture quality. Embedded within the stand itself are LG’s forward-facing Clear Speakers. These super thin and transparent audio units produce amazingly crisp, detailed sound with remarkable performance in the mid- to high-frequency ranges. Furthermore, it combines the company’s industry-leading CINEMA 3D technology with Smart TV capabilities, creating the most immersive and comprehensive home entertainment experience possible.

First unveiled at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), LG’s CURVED OLED TV continues to garner industry accolades. Earlier this year, the groundbreaking TV received the prestigious Red Dot: Best of the Best honor along with picture quality certifications from international product testing bodies TÜV Rheinland, Intertek, and VDE. The 55EA9800 is also the first OLED TV in the world to boast THX certification.

LG’s Micro Audio System (Model CM3430) was also honored by EISA this year, receiving the European Micro Audio System 2013-2014 award. This powerful device incorporates a robust 40W, 2.1 channel system and LG’s Dynamic Loudness Algorithm, perfectly reproducing even low pitch sounds. The unit’s excellent sound and subtle design makes it the perfect addition to any home or office.

Internationally respected, the EISA Awards recognize the very best the consumer electronics industry has to offer. Selected by 50 audio and video magazines from across 19 European countries, the winning products are assessed in terms of design, technology and innovation.

LG G2 INTRODUCES NEW DIRECTION IN SMARTPHONE DESIGN

More Than 130 Global Wireless Carriers on Board

to Roll Out LG’s Latest Premium Device

A half-side view of the front of LG G2 and the back of LG G2.

NEW YORK, Aug. 7, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its latest flagship smartphone LG G2, the first smartphone introduced under LG’s new “G” Series for premium devices, exemplifying LG’s aim to bring forth more customer-centric innovations.

Nearly 700 guests from over 30 countries converged at the renowned Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Centerin New York for the global introduction of the device. Based on LG’s research of consumer lifestyles and behaviors, the smartphone offers users more real-life benefits such as ergonomic design, practical functions and an intuitive user experience.

“Our definition of innovation today is technology that truly resonates with consumers,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of  the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, who welcomed the guests to the event. “We have always listened to and learned from consumers in pursuit of innovation. We took these insights to new heights in developing LG G2, the most exciting and ambitious mobile phone in our company’s history.”

New Perspective in Smartphone Design

The LG G2 brings everything together in a device with comfortable, functional, convenient and beautiful design. The LG G2 shifts the paradigm in smartphone design by placing all the buttons on the rear of the device, making this the first smartphone to be completely devoid of side buttons. The unique Rear Key concept came from the realization when studying users that the larger the phone became, the more difficult it was to properly access the side keys. Moving the main buttons to the back of the phone gave users more control since this place was where individuals’ index fingers are naturally located. Researchers found that moving the buttons also resulted in fewer dropped phones when adjusting the volume while talking.

Long-pressing on the rear-mounted volume keys allows users to launch QuickMemoTM and the camera, making note taking and photo capturing even easier than before. And if the LG G2 is lying on a surface face up, there’s no need to lift the phone to access the power button on the back. With KnockON, the LG G2 can be powered on simply by tapping twice on the display.

Edge-to-Edge Display and Best-In-Class Power Capacity

LG upped the ante by incorporating a 5.2-inch Full HD display in the LG G2, the largest display designed for one-handed operation in today’s popular 2.7-inch width smartphone category. In addition to the expansive viewing experience, LG’s innovative Dual Routing technology reduced the phone’s bezel to a mere 2.65mm on the side edge. And with proven IPS technology, the LG G2 offers superior graphics, accurate colors and clear images without any distortion.

For more efficient energy usage, the LG G2 employs Graphic RAM (GRAM) technology. GRAM reduces the display’s energy use by up to 26 percent on a still frame and increases overall usage time on the device by approximately 10 percent. And with a generous 3,000mAh battery that is thoughtfully designed to take maximum advantage of the interior space, the LG G2 is more than ready for a full day’s work or play.

OIS and High Resolution for Great Pictures

The LG G2’s high-resolution camera comes equipped with Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology to prevent blurring, allowing for clearer, brighter and sharper images even when in motion or shooting in dim environments. Most current smartphone cameras with OIS tend to offer resolution in the 4MP to 8MP range. The G2 is unique in that it offers 13MP and OIS technology in a slim design without a protruding lens. And features such as Super Resolution and Multi-point AF help keep everything in focus, just like a standalone point-and-shoot digital camera.

Studio Quality Hi-Fi Sound

In recent years, there has been an increase in consumer demand for superior sound in smartphones as high-quality multimedia content becomes more ubiquitous. Smartphones have become hubs for entertainment of all kind — TV shows, movies, games — and consumers expect the sound to be just as good as the image. The LG G2 is the first smartphone on the market today to feature 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback that reproduces studio-like quality sound, far superior to a CD. Now consumers can hear a level of audio realism that hasn’t been possible before in a smartphone.

Practical UX Connected to Everyday Life

Research shows that the most frequently used smartphone features are the most basic ones that users often take for granted such as SMS, social networking, directions and of course, making phone calls. The LG G2 comes with a number of compelling user experience (UX) features that provide the most practical value by focusing on a smartphone’s most popular tasks:

– Answer Me — Automatically answers the call after lowering the ringtone when the phone is raised to one’s ear.

– Plug & Pop — Recommends options or related features to choose from when the earphone or USB cable is detected.

– Text Link —Allows information embedded in text messages to be selected and easily saved in a memo or calendar and searched on a map or the internet.

– QuickRemote — Not only can LG G2 be used to remotely control popular home entertainment devices, it can also learn from conventional remotes and be customized to operate multiple devices with flexible layouts and keys.

– Slide Aside — Enables easier multitasking by simply “sliding” open apps off to the side using a three-finger swipe.

– Guest Mode — Protects owner’s privacy by displaying only pre-selected apps when guests access the phone with a secondary unlock pattern.

Unmatched Performance with Next Generation LTE

The LG G2 runs on the industry’s most advanced mobile chipset, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 Processor and redefines the smartphone experience through stunning performance, rich graphics and outstanding battery efficiency. Qualcomm Snapdragon is a product of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated. Through a long-term partnership collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, LG was able to deploy the chipset integrated perfectly with the LG G2 hardware to offer powerful and yet stable performance.

Following the global launch event in New York City on August 7, the LG G2 will be rolled out in over 130 wireless carriers in the next eight weeks starting in South Korea followed by North America, Europe and other key markets. Specific dates for market availability will vary by region and carrier.

LG ANNOUNCES SECOND-QUARTER 2013 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Company Sets New Quarterly Record with Sales of 12 Million Smartphones

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, July 24, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) today reported solid positive net income in the second-quarter as a result of improved performance in a majority of its business units. LG’s mobile phone business shipped 12.1 million smartphones between April and June, the highest ever in the company’s history.

Revenues in the 2013 second quarter rose 10.1 percent year-over-year to KRW 15.23 trillion (USD 13.58 billion), reflecting strong sales increases in most of LG’s business units. Second-quarter operating profit of KRW 479 billion (USD 426.92 million) and net profit of KRW 156 billion (USD 139.04 million), while down slightly from the same period last year, improved significantly from the previous quarter.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported revenues of KRW 5.5 trillion (USD 4.91 billion), an increase of 6.4 percent from the previous quarter and virtually unchanged year-over-year. Second-quarter operating profit of KRW 107 billion (USD 95.37 million) increased from the previous quarter thanks to stronger sales in developing markets and successful new models, but declined compared to the same period last year due to intense competition and slower demand resulting in a lower average selling price. With continuing weak demand globally and expected increased competition, the company is investing in the premium and large-screen TV market with the expansion of Ultra HD TV and OLED TV products in developed markets.

The LG Mobile Communications Company continued to improve its position in the second quarter recording revenues of KRW 3.12 trillion (USD 2.78 billion), an increase of 34.5 percent from the same period last year. The company shipped 12.1 million smartphones in the second quarter, a new quarterly unit sales record for LG. Operating profit increased year-over-year to KRW 61 billion (USD 54.37 million) but declined from the previous quarter as a result of weaker demand in the Korean market, lower average selling price due to increased competition, and higher marketing investments. Shipments from mass-market smartphone models such as L-Series II and F-Series are expected to drive sales growth, while high-end products such as G Pro and LG G2 should increase the company’s product competitiveness.

The LG Home Appliance Company recorded the highest quarterly revenues in its history with sales in the second quarter of KRW 3.19 trillion (USD 2.84 billion), up 10.9 percent from the previous year largely due to improved sales in the United States and emerging markets such as China and Latin America. Second-quarter operating profits of KRW 121 billion (USD 107.84 million) rose quarter-over-quarter but fell compared with the same period last year due to increased R&D investments. LG will focus on continuing to grow its home appliance business by producing differentiated products with improved energy efficiency while further improving its cost structure.

The LG Air Conditioning and Energy Solutions Company reported record-high revenues of KRW 1.73 trillion (USD 1.55 billion) in the second quarter, an 18.4 percent increase from last year’s second quarter and a 42.5 percent increase from the first quarter of 2013. Operating income of KRW 171 billion (USD 152.41 million) rose compared with the previous year and previous quarter, while operating profit margin increased to 9.9 percent largely due to improved product mix and business structure.

SEOUL, July 12, 2013 — Expanding on the strong interest surrounding its 84-inch ULTRA High Definition TV, LG Electronics (LG) today announced the addition of 55- and 65-inch ULTRA HD TV models in markets around the world, enabling even more consumers to enjoy the benefits of 4K technology. Initially introduced in South Korea last month, the two LA9700 series ULTRA HD TVs were rolled out in the United States this week and will be followed by introductions in overseas markets such as the U.K., Russia and Australia.

“When we first unveiled our 84-inch ULTRA HD TV at CES last year, the reception we received was phenomenal,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics’ Home Entertainment Company. “The ULTRA HD TV format is here to stay and with the new sizes offering NANO FULL LED backlighting and our proprietary Tru-ULTRA HD Engine, these models are in a class of their own.”

Unmatched Picture Quality and Sound

The new LA9700 series delivers unbelievable picture quality with more than four times the screen resolution of conventional HD TVs. The 55- and 65-inch ULTRA HD TVs produce incredibly sharp images with a resolution of 8.3 million pixels per frame. The Tru-ULTRA HD Engine maximizes image clarity and provides exceptional up-scaling, enabling consumers to view any video format in near-ULTRA HD quality. Additionally, LG’s LA9700 models are equipped with NANO FULL LED backlighting which results in deeper blacks and consistent brightness and contrast. With the inclusion of LG’s advanced In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels, the new TVs deliver accurate color expression across a wide, 178 degree viewing angle.

Both LA9700 models offer a 4.1 channel surround sound system which includes the stylish, forward-facing Sliding Speaker. With excellent mid- and high- frequency range performance, this elegant unit can be positioned to remain hidden or visible, delivering excellent sound either way. Alternatively, the Sliding Speaker can be set to extend automatically when the TV is turned on, and retract when powered off. A powerful subwoofer, located behind the TV’s screen, ensures strong bass performance.

Smart Design, Smart TV

Design-wise, the LA9700 ULTRA HD TVs create a stunning visual impression and a more immersive viewing experience thanks to the ULTRA-thin bezels of LG’s CINEMA SCREEN Design. And LG’s intuitive Smart TV platform provides easy access to a wide range of applications and content services from around the globe. The company’s excellent Magic Remote boasts natural language recognition, point, wheel, and gesture control options, making it easy to navigate menus, search for content or play exciting Smart TV games. What’s more, SmartShare offers the simplicity of Tag On (LG’s NFC-based device pairing feature), and the convenience of WiDi and MiracastTM screen mirroring. And the LA9700’s Now On function recommends content based on the user’s viewing patterns and previous program purchases.

Certified Picture Quality

The exceptional 2D and 3D picture quality of LG’s new 55- and 65-inch ULTRA HD TVs has been certified by respected international product testing and certification bodies, Intertek and Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Both organizations employ rigorous assessment processes, measuring a wide range of attributes including viewing angle, contrast consistency, color accuracy and 3D performance.

The new LA9700 models carry a suggested price of USD 7,999 for the 65-inch and USD 6,999 for the 55-inch model in the United States. Prices outside the U.S. will be announced at launch time.
