SEOUL, Dec. 20, 2012 — LG Electronics (LG) announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with U.S.-based Pecan Street Inc. to participate in a smart grid demonstration project in Austin, Texas. As part of Pecan Street’s Industry Advisory Council, LG will contribute its expertise to this unique research of smart homes, energy management and consumer electronics, until 2015. 3D VIDEO WALL AND 84-INCH ULTRA HD MULTI-TOUCH SIGNAGE HEADLINE LG’S LINEUP AT CES

LG Extends Its Leadership in the Digital Signage Sector, Employing
Advanced IPS Displays and Energy Saving Technology

LG’s digital signage at the International airport

SEOUL, Dec. 20, 2012 — LG Electronics (LG) will showcase its advanced digital sign-age lineup at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 8-11, 2013. The strong selection includes the flagship 55-inch 3D Video Wall, the 84-inch Ultra HD Multi-touch Signage, the EZ Sign TV, Smart Gate Media Pole, Smart Mirror and other leading commercial display solutions. LG recognizes the growing need for effective and efficient digital signage and is committed to developing a variety of products that incorporate cutting-edge IPS panels and Smart Energy Saving Technology.

“LG sees a bright future in the digital signage segment,” said Il-geun Kwon, Senior Vice President and Head of the IT Business Unit of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “We are proud to offer a superb range of products, capable of operating in diverse environments to meet a wide range of client needs. Our combination of IPS panels and Smart Energy Saving Technology offers the dual benefit of providing eye-catching images and significant energy savings.”

LG has repeatedly displayed its prowess in the digital signage arena, working with a number of prestigious international brands such as McDonald’s, KFC, Nike, Kia, Hyundai and Vodafone. The company has successfully implemented many large-scale projects, including the supply of nearly 18,000 digital signs to popular Canadian restaurant chain, Tim Hortons. LG’s signage solutions can be found in several of the world’s

major transportation hubs, such as Incheon International Airport and Sydney International Airport. This year, the company will again wow CES visitors with digital signs that are impressive not only in scale, but in picture quality and energy efficiency as well.

3D Video Wall for Sheer Enormity of Scale

Once again, LG is set to be the talk of Las Vegas with its larger-than-life 3D Video Wall at its CES booth, an immense display consisting of an impressive 122 LG 55-inch WV70MD screens. With the world’s narrowest bezel-to-bezel measurement of just 5.3mm, the 3D Video Wall gives the viewer the impression that they are viewing a single enormous display. White balance for every screen can be automatically calibrated via factory-installed software to ensure perfectly uniform picture quality across all screens and IPS display technology provides vibrant, crisp pictures with a wide viewing angle.

And LG’s large-scale digital signage solution employs the company’s proprietary Smart Energy Saving Technology, allowing it to use approximately 30 percent less electricity than other commercial LED displays. This helps reduce power bills without compromising picture quality.

84-inch Ultra HD Multi-touch Signage for Engaging and Educating

LG’s impressive 84-inch Ultra HD Multi-touch Signage introduces the sharpness of Ultra HD to the B2B digital display market. At CES, LG’s massive five-point touchscreens will enable users to interact with reproductions of masterpieces from the world’s most prestigious museums. An incredibly high pixel density means that even the most delicate brushstrokes can be viewed in great detail on the Ultra HD Multi-touch. In addition to zooming, rotating or writing onscreen messages with one’s fingers, LG’s 84-inch Ultra HD Multi-touch Signage is geared towards intuitive, natural interaction, making it ideal for a variety of commercial and educational applications.

EZ Sign TV and More

LG’s award-winning EZ Sign TV will also be exhibited at CES 2013. The EZ Sign TV was recognized by Commercial Integrator magazine for two consecutive years — 2011 and 2012 — for its ability to offer customized content layout. The versatile EZ Sign TV is suited to many tasks, including advertising, playing multimedia and displaying live broadcasts. LG’s slim, space-saving Smart Gate Media Pole, which is also ideal for marketing and advertising applications will be showcased along with the Smart Mirror; a display that functions as both a mirror and a monitor.

LG’s B2B Business Approach

The use of digital signage is on the rise and global sales is expected to grow to USD 9.5 million sets by 2016, a six-fold increase over 2009 according to DisplaySearch. LG’s signage solutions can be seen in a host of locations, performing a diverse range of functions, including advertising products and services, training students and professionals, aiding in government and corporate operations, or providing useful public information.

LG will also be exhibiting more flagship products at Europe’s most prestigious business-to-business tradeshow, Integrated Systems Europe 2013 (ISE) starting January 29 in Amsterdam.

LG UNVEILS REDESIGNED MAGIC REMOTE WITH ADVANCED VOICE CONTROL TECHNOLOGY

Redesigned Advanced Remote Creates Whole New User Experience

When Viewing LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs

LG’s all-new Magic Remote for its CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup.

SEOUL, Dec. 19, 2012 – LG Electronics (LG) today announced an all-new Magic Remote for its CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup prior to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The redesigned device adopts enhanced language recognition capabilities that make executing commands simple, natural, interactive and conversational. The new design will continue to employ four control options – voice, gesture, point, and wheel – making it the most complete universal remote.

“LG is committed to providing innovative home entertainment solutions and the Magic Remote is a key pillar of the CINEMA 3D Smart TV user experience,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “Building on an already impressive feature set, the latest version boasts accurate language recognition and its gesture, wheel and point control options makes the Magic Remote stand out amongst its competition as a truly intuitive device.”

The LG Magic Remote’s sophisticated voice control technology makes issuing a verbal command to the TV both simple and effective. New Natural Language Recognition software makes giving voice commands as easy as regular speech and allows the user to talk in a more conversational manner. No longer is there a need for an awkward pause between the command and the title to be viewed, users can simply say “Show me Gangnam Style video” and the new Magic Remote will understand.

As the heart of the home theater experience, the new LG Magic Remote serves as a universal control solution, maximizing convenience for the user with its ability to access and control an array of home entertainment equipment. All devices ranging from Smart TVs, set-top boxes, soundbars and Blu-ray players can be effectively managed with just one Magic Remote in the living room. With the point feature, the LG Magic Remote becomes an extension of the human body, making it an ideal motion-based video game controller. The wheel control is perfect for scrolling up and down web pages or zooming in and out when using applications such as Google Maps. And by making specific gestures with the remote, users can quickly access oft-used menus or perform frequently needed functions, saving valuable time. For example, a viewer can switch to a favorite TV channel just by writing the number in the air.

The Magic Remote comes in two highly functional models — one ships with LG’s premium CINEMA 3D Smart TVs and the other with the company’s standard CINEMA 3D Smart TV models. The premium Magic Remote features LED back-lit buttons for easy operation in the dark and also sports a more compact design, making it easier and more comfortable to hold. Commonly used buttons have been thoughtfully repositioned, resulting in an even more natural and enjoyable user experience.

From left: CPI Industry Managing Director Frederic Paille, LGEGF General Manager Joon-seok Shin, CPI Industry Editorial Director B.Surendar

SEOUL, Dec. 14, 2012 -– LG Electronics (LG) was the recipient of the “Best Project Award” from Climate Control Middle East for its LG Electronics Gulf FZE project, a building equipped with LG’s DX system, an innovative combination of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) air conditioning, solar panels and LED lighting. Climate Control Middle East is the most recognized magazine in the Middle East covering issues related to the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) industry.

The DX system minimizes the resource consumption of each major component, which enables LGE Gulf FZE to achieve its impressive energy savings figures. The stand alone Multi V III VRF air conditioning units reduce the building’s energy consumption by 30 to 35 percent compared to conventional units. In addition, LG’s photo voltaic solar panels generate electricity in the daytime to offset the building’s total consumption by almost 4 percent. Furthermore, the LEDs decrease the lighting heat load and operating power consumption.

Earlier, LGE Gulf FZE had also garnered praise from the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for its sustainability efforts. USGBC, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., gave the building top marks for its implementation of sustainable initiatives. After testing, the USGBC bestowed the building with the coveted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification. In particular, it noted that the building reduced energy consumption by 21.5 percent via the DX system. LEED certification relies on a points system in which weighted credits are granted depending on the environmental impact and the human benefits of the product. The LGE Gulf FZE building earned an impressive 39 credits, becoming the first structure in the Middle East region to receive a Gold Certification.

“LG has long striven to use its technological know-how to provide groundbreaking total energy solutions,” said Kam-gyu Lee, President of LG’s System Air Conditioning Business Unit. “So we are understandably very proud that LGE Gulf FZE has been recognized once again for its energy efficiency and sustainability efforts. The challenge now is to build on this success and continue to provide even more efficient HVAC products and energy solutions in the future.”

Next year, LG plans to launch its ultra-high efficiency HVAC solutions including the Multi V IV , LG’s latest VRF system, globally.

LG L-SERIES REPORTS 10 MILLION HAPPY CUSTOMERS

New Design Identity From LG Proves That Not All Smartphones Need to Look Alike
People celebrate Optimus L-Series smartphone sales exceeding 10 million units

SEOUL, Dec. 9, 2012 — LG Electronics (LG) announced today that sales of its Optimus L-Series smartphones have exceeded 10 million units, marking a modest milestone for LG and its mobile devices business. The success of L-Series in recording eight figures in sales is proof that many consumers want attractive smartphones with distinctive — not “me too” — styling.

L-Series handsets — Optimus L3 (3.2-inch display), Optimus L5 (4.0-inch display), Optimus L7 (4.3-inch display) — were first introduced at the 2012 Mobile World Congress (MWC) with the unveiling of LG’s new design philosophy and followed by the most recent Optimus L9 (4.7-inch display). L-Style incorporates timeless design with fine details that further differentiates LG’s mobile devices from the competition. This design philosophy is comprised of five aesthetic elements: Modern Square Style for a comfortable grip, Floating Mass Technology for a slimmer look, Seamless Layout for a more intuitive arrangement of keys, Harmonized Design Contrast utilizing metallic accents and Sensuous Slim Shape that draws one’s gaze to the unique form factor.

“This milestone demonstrates the importance of delivering smartphones with stylish design, comparative size of display and enhanced UX features,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “Whereas other manufacturers are putting all their eggs into a one-size-fits-all phone, our strategy is to develop mobile products for all types of customers according to their individual needs and lifestyles.”

The L-Series lineup of handsets also offered large displays and LG’s proprietary UX features such as QuickMemo and QTranslator. QuickMemo allows users to capture and share a note with others using just a fingertip while QTranslator instantly and accurately translates words as well as entire sentences into 64 foreign languages.

All the models in the L-Series — Optimus L3, Optimus L5, Optimus L7 and Optimus L9 — are available in over 50 markets worldwide.

LG ELECTRONICS RESPONDS TO EUROPEAN COMMISSION DECISION ON CRT DISPLAYS

Logo of LG Electronics

SEOUL, December 6, 2012 -– LG Electronics Inc. confirms that it has been imposed an administrative fine of €491,567,000 by the European Commission for allegedly infringing European competition law with regard to the sale of cathode ray tubes in the late 1990s and up to 2006. LG Electronics is currently reviewing the European Commission’s decision with the intention to appeal the decision.

The European Commission contends that LG Electronics is liable for the period prior to July 2001 when it made and sold cathode ray tubes in addition to a period after that date, even though it had transferred its cathode ray tube business to LG Philips Displays, a joint venture between LG Electronics and Royal Philips Electronics NV. In 2006, LG Philips Displays went bankrupt. During the European Commission’s investigation of the case, LG Electronics consistently maintained that it should not be held liable. In particular, LG Electronics has maintained that it cannot be held liable for any conduct of LG Philips Displays, which operated independently from LG Electronics at all times. For the period prior to the transfer of LG Electronics’ cathode ray tube business to LG Philips Displays, any action by the European Commission is in any event time-barred.

“Other leading competition authorities, including the Korean Fair Trade Commission, the US Department of Justice and the Canadian Competition Bureau have investigated the same facts and concluded that LG Electronics should not be held liable for the conduct of LG Philips Displays,” said John Kwon, Executive Vice President of LG Electronics. “In Europe, the Czech Republic’s antitrust authority reached the same conclusion. LG Electronics fails to understand why the European Commission, which publicly values convergence of competition law enforcement, has taken a wholly different approach.”

Furthermore, LG Electronics disagrees with the European Commission’s calculation of the amount imposed on LG Electronics. It appears that the European Commission has calculated the fine imposed on LG Electronics partly on the basis of TV sets and PC monitors sold by LG Electronics in Europe rather than just cathode ray tubes. LG Electronics objects to this approach as there is no evidence that such sales, which relate to downstream products, were affected by the alleged infringement investigated by the Commission. In addition, LG Electronics further objects to the discriminatory fashion in which the European Commission has imposed its fines on the basis that it defies principles of fairness by treating similarly situated entities differently.

Any impact of the European Commission’s decision on the financial results of LG Electronics will be announced at the next earnings report.

LG INTRODUCES WORLD’S FIRST 21:9 ULTRAWIDE MONITOR

With 21:9 Aspect Ratio and 4-Screen Split Feature, LG’s UltraWide Monitor
Delivers Exceptional Multitasking Features and Multimedia Functionality

The LG UltraWide monitor model EA93 in front of a grey background.

SEOUL, Nov. 8, 2012 -– LG Electronics (LG) today announced the launch of its EA93 UltraWide Monitor, the world’s first to boast a 21:9 aspect ratio. The 29-inch screen offers ample screen real estate, a 4-Screen Split feature and 100 percent sRGB color space expression to provide better multitasking and multimedia capabilities. Designed for maximizing productivity, the monitor employs an IPS display to produce lifelike colors, making it an impressive addition to the home, office or studio.

“LG is always working to expand the definition of what technology is and how it can contribute to productivity and convenience. Whether it’s for work, watching movies, playing games or anything else in between, the UltraWide Monitor enhances the multitasking and multimedia experience,” said J.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the IT Business Unit at the LG Home Entertainment Company. “The cinematic proportions, diverse color range and all-around functionality of the UltraWide Monitor clearly demonstrate an ongoing commitment to innovation.”

Multitasking Functionality for Home and Office
The UltraWide Monitor is an excellent addition to any work environment. The monitor’s expansive 29-inch screen provides plenty of room for multiple documents and windows to be viewed at one time. The expansive display also allows more spreadsheet columns to be viewed at once or a two-page document to be read side-by-side.

The UltraWide Monitor is also an outstanding device for graphics professionals. The monitor enables artists to see more and do more with their time. Transforming the monitor into the ultimate multitasking tool, the 4-Screen Split feature can divide the screen into two to four segments, each of which can be uniquely customized.
Graphic designers generally utilize a dual-monitor configuration, allowing them to compare and contrast the material they are editing. However, dual monitors can cause color inconsistencies between screens. The UltraWide monitor, on the other hand, can connect the monitor to two external devices via Dual Link-up, providing consistent color across the entire screen, eliminating the bezels that typically divide the view in dual-monitor set-ups. Additionally, the monitor offers 100 percent of the sRGB color space and is hardware-color-calibration ready, making it perfectly adept at expressing consistent true-to-life colors that graphics professionals require.

Perfect for Movies and Multimedia Viewing
The UltraWide Monitor’s 21:9 aspect ratio is very close to the dimensions of movie theater screens. Its cinematic dimensions allow the monitor to display films the way they were intended. The monitor also takes advantage of IPS display technology so viewers can enjoy lifelike picture quality movies at almost any angle. The combination of four different features -– 21:9 aspect ratio, amazing image quality, brilliant color expression and LG’s CINEMA SCREEN Design –- makes the UltraWide Monitor ideal for movie buffs and video games. Gamers can also play games and videos from their smartphones on the monitor via the included MHL connection. The addition of two 7W stereo speakers adds to the immersive entertainment experience.

LG’s UltraWide Monitor will be introduced in Korea early this month and rolled-out globally in the weeks following.

Leading the HDTV category for 2012, LG home entertainment products earned three top Reviewed.com awards:  the “Best 3D TV” (model LM9600), “Best LCD TV” (model LM7600) and “Best Mid-Range LCD” (model LM6200).

Each of these models features LG’s innovative CINEMA 3D technology, which provides a comfortable 3D effect and theater-like experience using light-weight, comfortable glasses. All include LG’s Smart TV platform for simple access to limitless content like Netflix, Hulu Plus and more, as well as a web browser and loads of content sharing options via built-in Wi-Fi. Appealing to design-focused consumers, the LM9600 and LM7600 feature LG’s new Cinema Screen design – a nearly frameless look, for a streamlined, modern feel that also provides a more immersive viewing experience.

Named “Best French-Door Refrigerator,” LG’s Super-Capacity refrigerator model LFX31925 features a 31-cubic-foot capacity along with a host of technologies designed to help keep food fresher longer. In the cooking category, LG’s free-standing range model LRE3023ST was named “Best Electric Range” for 2012.  The appliance features the largest capacity in the industry at 6.3 cubic feet, along with LG’s Infrared Grill system for quicker heating and juicier results, while cutting cooking time by more than 20 percent.

In home appliances, LG also captured two “Best Innovation” honors for its washer and refrigerator technologies.

Recognized as the top washer/dryer innovation, LG’s TurboWash technology allows consumers to save 20 minutes per load*, even on large loads, without sacrificing cleaning performance. This technology is available across a variety of washers -– from entry-level models to LG’s industry-leading 5.1 cubic-foot Mega-Capacity washer (model WM8000HVA). The LG Blast Chiller, a popular feature of LG’s Super-Capacity French-door refrigerator (model LFX31935) can cool a room-temperature 12-ounce beverage can in less than five minutes.

LG UNVEILS ADVANCED TOUCH 10 MONITOR OPTIMIZED FOR WINDOWS 8

Innovative 10-Point IPS Monitor Expands the Horizon of Touchscreen Technology

A hand touches the display of LG’ Touch 10 monitor model ET83.

SEOUL, Oct. 31, 2012 – LG Electronics (LG) introduced its Touch 10 monitor (model: ET83), optimized for use with Windows 8, which was launched by Microsoft last week. Whereas conventional touchscreens enable two-finger dragging, scrolling and pinching, LG’s 23-inch Touch 10 monitor allows all ten fingers to be used simultaneously. The Touch 10 monitor is an excellent choice for those looking to enjoy an enhanced touch computing experience without having to upgrade their entire PC.

“This is a compelling new product that re-imagines the touch experience and shows that LG is an industry leader in developing the next generation of touch monitor products,” said J.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the IT Business Unit at the LG Home Entertainment Company. “Smartphones and tablets have already proven that consumers are ready to fully embrace touch features. Our 10-point touchscreen takes it one step further by exponentially expanding the range of interactive possibilities. We believe this technology will excite and inspire software developers and users alike.”

For tablet and smartphone owners, the Touch 10 monitor will feel like a huge improvement in the intuitive user experience they’re familiar with. Most touchscreens utilize a two-finger recognition system which allows for basic manipulation of onscreen elements. LG’s Touch 10 monitor affords users the ability to use all their fingers at the same time, meaning they can perform a number of new actions, such as dragging and rotating multiple items simultaneously. The highly responsive touchscreen also enables the user to take advantage of Windows 8 features, including the on-screen keyboard. The Touch 10 monitor also supports a capacitive stylus (purchased separately) should the user prefer a pen-like interface.

It’s great to see LG bringing touch to computing in innovative new ways,” said John Case, Vice President WW OEM Marketing, Microsoft Corporation. “Pairing LG’s Touch 10 monitor with a desktop or non-touch laptop will help create amazing Windows 8 touch experiences for customers.”

The impressive 23-inch monitor is great for musical applications featuring virtual pianos, synthesizers and string instruments. A bigger display is also makes watching movies, playing games and children’s educational programs much more enjoyable. A range of touch-friendly apps is available from the Windows Store. Moreover, from a consumer standpoint, the monitor’s setup is refreshingly hassle-free; full touch functionality is available as soon as the monitor is connected, and no extra software is required.

To ensure optimal picture quality, the monitor utilizes an advanced In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel. IPS displays have inherent advantages over conventional Twisted Nematic (TN) displays in terms of both color and clarity. The range of colors displayed is both vibrant and naturalistic, with good contrast and overall consistency. IPS technology also provides a more comfortable viewing experience for the user, reducing eye strain and thereby allowing extended periods of use.

The Touch 10 monitor will be available in Korea next month followed by markets in Europe and elsewhere.
