LG CINEMA 3D SMART TV LEADS REVOLUTION IN TV INDUSTRY WITH BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGIES

FPR Technology, Smart TV Features and Innovative CINEMA SCREEN Design
Contribute to Make LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TV Critical and Commercial Success

LG’s 55-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV model 55LM9600.

SEOUL, Aug. 23, 2012 -– Rarely is a technology trend so pronounced that it has the power to shift buying habits of an entire world. Light bulbs led to the extinction of oil lamps, music on convenient cassette tapes contributed to the demise of vinyl records, and smartphones managed to demolish the PDA industry in the new millennium.
LG Electronics (LG) is currently in a similar position historically. In the span of only 18 months, LG has turned the TV industry on its head with the introduction of 3D Smart TVs featuring a newfangled technology called Film Patterned Retarder (FPR), which challenged the popular 3D TV technology at the time that relied on shutter glasses (SG). Unlike SG 3D TVs, LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TVs do not require heavy and bulky glasses that need regular recharging because LG’s 3D TVs use inexpensive and light-weight, flicker-free glasses identical to those worn at movie theaters.
As the competing 3D technologies fought for consumer acceptance, the awareness of 3D products and the volume of 3D content grew. With popular 3D movies available on DVD, there was now a strong reason to upgrade to a 3D Smart TV, especially for families with children. According to market research company, DisplaySearch, sales of 3D TVs are anticipated to reach around 25 million units this year.
In addition to being more comfortable and flicker-free, LG’s 3D Smart TVs also produces less crosstalk, allowing for extended use without headaches. With such a clear advantage in comfort over competitors’ models, LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV began to receive more and more positive reviews from leading media outlets, building up product leadership and visibility in the 3D TV market. The tide had begun to turn in favor of FPR.

This year, LG will further strengthening its position in the 3D market by making a greater percentage of its total TV products 3D-capable. LG also introduced CINEMA SCREEN design which reduced the 3D Smart TV’s bezel to to a negligible level and increased the size of its largest TV to 84 inches, able to display an amazing 8 million pixels. LG also reached out to the influential gaming community with an annual event, LG CINEMA 3D Game Festival.
The combination of Smart TV features, abundant 3D content and easy-to-use User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI), such as Home Dashboard and intuitive Magic Remote have helped LG to meet the needs of consumers who have always needed a strong reason to upgrade their TVs.
Here is just a short list of the recent accolades LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV has received to date from influential consumer magazines:
Which? (UK): Selected LG’s 47-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV (47LM860) as a Best Buy product with excellent HD picture quality and superior sound as well as the well thought-out Magic Remote.
CNET: Awarded Editor’s Choice designation to LG’s 55-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV (55LM9600) and 42-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV (42LM660T). Noting the excellent 3D performance, CNET said LG’s products were the best passive 3D TV on the market. Commenting on the 42-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV, CNET UK praised “its sumptuous design, excellent Smart TV features, top-notch 3D support and pristine HD images.”
Digital Trends (USA): Gave CINEMA 3D Smart TV (55LM6700) 9 out of 10 stars and an Editor’s Choice designation.

HiVi (Japan): Leading Japanese AV magazine, HiVi, and top Japanese daily, Nikkei, wrote glowingly of LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, a rarity in a country that is historically challenging for foreign TV brands.
LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TV will be on display in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin during IFA 2012 along with other LG Home Entertainment products.

LG LAUNCHES WORLD’S FIRST 84-INCH UD 3D TV WITH UNPARALLEL PICTURE QUALITY

Breaking New Ground in Home Entertainment with 4K Ultra Definition,
Industry-leading 3D Technology and Smart TV Features

Two models posing at either side of the world’s first 84-inch Ultra Definition 3D TV by LG.

SEOUL, Aug. 22, 2012 -– LG Electronics (LG) today introduced the world’s first 84-inch Ultra Definition (UD) 3D TV in the Korean market. LG’s UD 3D TV is the company’s response to growing consumer demand for larger, more immersive home TVs with greater functionality. The UD 3D TV introduces a number of new smart features with the aim of providing greater convenience and simpler interaction.

“The 4K display market is still in its infancy but it was important for LG to claim a stake in this space,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company, “LG’s UD 3D TV represents a whole new level of home viewing experience because it offers every advanced technology we currently have to offer.”

LG UD 3D TV boasts astonishing picture quality with 8 million pixels per frame, four times the resolution (3840×2160) of existing Full HD TV panels, due in large part to LG’s advanced Triple XD Engine. The additional Resolution Upscaler Plus allows images from external sources such as hard drives and user-generated content websites to be rendered in higher detail.

Bringing this exciting new experience to the 3D entertainment arena, LG has equipped its UD 3D TV with CINEMA 3D technology to ensure the impressively large display provides the most immersive viewing experience possible. 3D Depth Control allows viewers to fine-tune the “distance” between near and far objects on the screen for a custom 3D experience. The 3D Sound Zooming feature then analyzes the on-screen objects to generate sound according to their location and movement.

LG’s newest Magic Remote allows users to intuitively access and navigate the Home Dashboard. LG’s Smart TV ecosystem now includes approximately 1,400 apps and access to a growing community of premium content services such as 3D World with a wide array of movies and games. Even more media content can be accessed via portable devices such as laptops, mobile phones, tablets and flash memory drives using Smart Share Plus. The imbedded 2D to 3D conversion engine expands the availability of 3D content and Dual Play takes head-to-head game play to a whole new level by allowing opponents to simultaneously see different images on the same screen. With Dual Play, split-screen gaming is a thing of the past.

LG’s UD 3D TV also features a 2.2 Speaker System consisting of two 10W speakers and two 15W woofers, which reinforce the sound to produce a lush audio experience that perfectly complements the extraordinary visuals produced by the massive screen, creating a theater-like experience in the home.

LG’s 84-inch UD 3D TV will roll-out in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America starting in September. Visitors to IFA 2012 will be able to experience the TV for themselves at the LG Electronics stand in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin.

LG OLED TV RECOGNIZED BY TOP INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS

LG’s OLED TV Earns Recognition from Leading U.S. Design
Organization for Technological Breakthrough and Design Innovation

BOSTON, Aug. 17, 2012 –- LG Electronics (LG) was honored today by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) for the company’s innovative OLED TV. The IDSA’s International Design Excellence Award (IDEA®), bestowed here today at the ISDA’s international conference, is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world with 19 international design experts from design consultancies, corporations and universities sitting on the jury.

The 55-inch OLED TV from LG made its first public appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and is expected to be launched globally by the end of the year.  LG’s OLED TV features a 4mm Paper Slim design and a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) casing that reduces the TV’s weight to only 10kg. At the heart of the TV is LG’s unique WRGB technology which uses a white sub-pixel to improve the color output, setting LG’s OLED TV apart from conventional RGB OLED system. The screen delivers an unparalleled viewing experience without distortion or loss of contrast regardless of ambient brightness or viewing angle.

Design was a primary focus in the development of the TV. Aside from providing a total immersion effect, the design team aspired to create a complete package that was authentically beautiful. It was given three different design options -– a versatile floor stand, a floating table stand and a perfect wall mount -– to provide owners with greater interior décor flexibility. This guarantees that the world’s best display will complement any interior space.

In addition to accepting LG’s award, Kun-pyo Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of LG’s Corporate Design Center, delivered a keynote address entitled “Convergence and Platform for Design: Opportunity or Risk?”  He highlighted key design trends and placed particular emphasis on the evolution of user-product interactions.

“User-product interactions have now become the primary factor for product designers, and this is what makes LG’s OLED TV so intriguing,” said Lee. “Not only is the technology groundbreaking, it is also designed specifically to enhance the interaction between the viewer and the display. The fact that the TV is attracting so much attention is a testament to LG’s ability to understand consumer trends and capitalize on them.”

Last March, nine LG products were shortlisted for the jury round at IDEA. The judges ultimately awarded a Silver Award to LG’s OLED TV and a Bronze Award to LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TV, the latter boasting a barely visible bezel and LG’s Magic Motion Remote Control. Another Silver Award was given to one of LG’s concept products to assist the disabled.

LG ANNOUNCES SECOND-QUARTER 2012 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Solid Performance in Home Appliance and Home Entertainment
Helps Offset Difficult Quarter in Mobile Phones

SEOUL, July 25, 2012 –- LG Electronics (LG) today reported a 46 percent increase in net profits for the second quarter of 2012 versus the same period a year ago. Despite the continuing recessionary conditions, LG’s operating profit in the most recent quarter increased significantly year-over-year. Stronger performance in home entertainment and home appliances compared to the second quarter last year helped offset profit declines in LG’s mobile business.

Due to a combination of more premium products, strategic focus on developing markets and aggressive cost reductions, second-quarter net profit increased 46 percent year-over-year to KRW 159 billion (USD 138.02 million) while operating profit more than doubled to KRW 349 billion (USD 302.95 million) from the same period last year. Revenues, while 5.2 percent higher than in the first quarter, declined from last year’s second quarter by 10.6 percent to KRW 12.86 trillion (USD 11.16 billion) due to declining feature phone sales and weak demand for IT products.

LG Home Entertainment Company posted significantly improved operating profit in the quarter compared to the same period in 2011. Due in large part to an increase in sales of more premium products and improved supply chain management, operating profit more than doubled to 216 billion (USD 187.5 million) year-over-year. Sales declined 5.8 percent from the same period a year ago to KRW 5.48 trillion (USD 4.76 billion) but increased 2.8 percent from the first quarter of 2012. LG’s popular CINEMA 3D TVs will continue to drive sales in the second half as it pushes ahead to become the top global seller in the 3D segment.

LG Mobile Communications Company, after a positive first quarter, struggled somewhat in the most recent quarter with an operating loss of KRW 57 billion (USD 49.48 million) mainly due to greater marketing expenses related to new model launches in the quarter. Overall revenues declined 28.5 percent year-over-year to KRW 2.32 trillion (USD 2.01 billion) as a result of shrinking feature phone sales but smartphone shipments rose to 44 percent of unit sales, up from 36 percent the previous quarter capitalizing on LG’s strength in LTE phones. The company is planning to introduce new LTE models in the second half in developed 4G regions including North America and parts of Europe and Asia.

LG Home Appliance Company saw its second-quarter 2012 operating profit nearly triple  to KRW 165 billion (USD 143.23 million) from the same period last year thanks to a better product mix and improved cost efficiency. Revenues also increased year-over-year to KRW 2.88 trillion (USD 2.50 billion) from growth in developing markets. The company still expects improved results in the second half compared to the previous year despite ongoing weak demand in developed markets.

LG Air Conditioning and Energy Solution Company posted operating profit of KRW 70 billion (USD 60.76 million), a 17 percent increase year-over-year. Revenues increased 21 percent quarter-to-quarter but declined year-over-year to KRW 1.47 trillion (USD 1.28 billion) due to weak residential conditioner sales in Korea and low demand in developed markets. However, profitability improved year-over-year led by higher contribution from system air conditioner sales. The company will focus on improving profitability by introducing more energy-efficient products and by accelerating growth in its commercial air conditioner systems business.
