LG SMARTPHONE DESIGNER: “LG CHOCOLATE, PRADA DNA LIVES ON IN OPTIMUS G”

“Our top priority was to carry over LG’s unique design DNA and heritage to Optimus G,” says the phone’s Chief Designer Sera Park. “Optimus G has many of the elements that we incorporated in the past in phones such as Chocolate, Prada and L-Series. For example, the front face of Optimus G is completely black with lines that are nearly invisible when the phone is off, an effect similar to the original LG Prada.”

The Crystal Reflection finish used for the first time on the back of LG’s new Optimus G smartphone was developed and patented over a period of 15 months. Crystal Reflection gives the Optimus G’s back cover the ability to display different patterns depending on the viewing angle and lighting. The intricate polarized 3D pattern, which sparkles just under the surface, looks almost jewel-like. Laser cutting adds to the clean finish, as do the metallic highlights.

LG ELECTRONICS, TP VISION AND TOSHIBA EXPAND MARKET REACH WITH SMART TV ALLIANCE

New Alliance Members Bring Wealth of Knowledge and Experience to Smart TV Universe

The LG Smart TV displaying the weather forecast channel.

BERLIN, Aug. 29, 2012 -– Smart TV Alliance, launched in June this year by founding board members LG Electronics and TP Vision with Toshiba joining shortly after, has expanded with new members with expertise from different areas of the Smart TV industry. As it continues to expand its market reach, the Smart TV Alliance will publish specifications for its software development kit (SDK) 2.0 on its official website www.smarttv-alliance.org. The actual SDK tool will be made available by the end of the year for use by developers.

In addition to Smart TV manufacturers, organizations that contribute in different ways to the Smart TV experience have also joined the Alliance. Qualcomm and MStar will bring their expertise and understanding in hardware design to the consortium while Obigo, a leading web browser provider and application developer, will provide valuable input from a developer’s perspective. And YuMe, a provider of video advertising software and services, will deliver knowledge and experience from the advertising community.

“The expanding membership of the Smart TV Alliance is clear indication that these companies recognize the value of this Alliance,” said Richard Choi of LG Electronics, President of Smart TV Alliance. “This is an industry coming together to solve a common problem, which has clear benefits for the consumer. The diversity of the Smart TV Alliance is reassuring because it shows that this is an industry movement, not just an initiative from TV manufacturers.”

Demonstrating that developing common Alliance specifications is not an exercise in theory only, Obigo has developed apps based on Alliance SDK 1.0 specifications that run consistently on TV sets from Alliance members. Consumers will be able to enjoy these apps, including Accuweather and Vilanoise, when they become publicly available in September. In addition, more apps will be developed and become available through Smart TV Alliance members.

“This is an important step for the industry. Being able to work with a much larger install base presents great opportunities for us,” stated David Hwang, President of Obigo. “Now we can put our energy into making our apps better instead of testing the same app on many different TV sets. We can be a lot more productive this way.”

As different communities in the Smart TV industry come together, the Smart TV Alliance will announce the SDK 2.0 specifications on its website, which will be supported by 2013 products from member companies. By looking at these specifications, developers will be able to understand what capabilities to expect on 2013 products and plan their application development accordingly. After the specifications are announced, the SDK software tool will be available for download from www.smarttv-alliance.org.

LG UNVEILS ADVANCED V-SERIES CLOUD MONITOR BASED ON THE TERA2 CHIPSET

Next-Generation LG Cloud Monitor Boosts Picture Quality,
Further Reduces Energy Consumption

Front view of LG V-Series zero client cloud monitor.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 26, 2012 –- LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its next-generation V-Series zero client cloud monitor (model CAV42K), which adds the Teradici Tera2 chipset, putting it at the forefront of cloud computing performance. During this week’s VMworld 2012 global virtualization conference (booth 939), LG is demonstrating 10 cloud monitors, highlighted by the new V-Series.

“The V-Series represents the next generation in LG’s expanding range of cloud monitors,” said J.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the IT Business Unit of LG Home Entertainment Company. “The V-Series employs the Teradici Tera2 chipset to enhance the features offered by its predecessor. The V-Series provides better picture quality than previous models and is an ideal solution for any company or large organization.”

LG’s V-Series is available in two sizes, 23-inch (16:9 aspect ratio) and 19-inch (16:10 aspect ratio). The Tera2 chipset helps reduce power consumption by operating at fewer than 6 watts of typical system power, compared to the Tera1 chipset, which operates at fewer than 15 watts of typical system power*. Adopting the new TERA2321 chip also gives Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) users a more powerful processor capable of processing pixels up to five times faster (50 Mega Pixels per second from 10 Mega Pixels per second) than previous P-series Cloud monitors containing the Tera1 chip. This can result in a better multimedia experience due to smoother video playback in some instances. The new chipset supports DDR3 RAM for faster and more energy efficient memory and enhanced image quality.
The monitor’s six USB 2.0 ports enable users to attach accessories to the monitor, including keyboards, or mice, printers, scanners, card readers and cameras for enhanced functionality. For added convenience, a USB interface box was placed on the back left side of the monitor, which allows users to more easily connect their USB devices.

The Cloud Ecosystem
The V-Series builds on the features offered in LG’s impressive P-Series monitors and continues to use zero client cloud computing to consolidate servers, the VMware platform to oversee server integration, and Cisco’s UPoE to improve energy efficiency and connectivity. The VMware platform is an automated virtual infrastructure that helps companies reduce cost by managing the network and helping to ensure system efficiency. The software is controlled from a centralized network, so there is greater security and prevention of hacking, viruses and spyware by allowing the data flow to be more easily monitored and blocked if necessary.

LG’s zero client cloud computing technology consolidates servers and reduces hardware requirements. In fact, each station only needs a network connection, keyboard and mouse. With no central processing unit (CPU), no memory and no storage, employees don’t need to install operating systems or software, saving both time and money. Booting speeds are faster than traditional desktops, and the entire system was designed with “green” in mind.

Cisco’s UPoE technology is particularly appealing for its minimal energy requirements. It delivers power over LAN cabling to networked devices and, with the EnergyWise program, UPoE can track power consumption and make adjustments in real-time for greater efficiency. UPoE technology also eliminates cables and connectors, letting employees make better use of their office space.

Performance-Enhancing Feature Set
The V-Series Cloud Monitors offer a variety of unique features that will both improve performance and reduce costs. This model includes LED backlighting, which provides deep blacks, rich colors and increased contrast, helping create detailed and accurate images. With Full HD 1920 x 1080 (23-inch) and 1440 x 900 (19-inch) resolution, these monitors deliver an ultra-sharp picture. The In Plane Switching (IPS) panel technology (23-inch only) helps ensure color saturation and contrast for a great picture even during off-angle viewing.

LG’s V-Series Cloud Monitors are compliant with EPEAT®, the leading global environmental rating system for electronic products, Gold Level certified, meeting strict criteria to offer a reduced environmental impact across their lifecycles. As a requirement for EPEAT® rating, the V-Series Cloud monitors also are ENERGY STAR® qualified.

LG UNVEILS PREMIUM IPS MONITORS PERFECT FOR BOTH GRAPHICS PROFESSIONALS AND ENTERTAINMENT ENTHUSIASTS

With 21:9 Cinematic Screen and WQHD Resolution, New IPS Monitors
from LG Offer Enhanced Multitasking and Superb Multimedia Performance

A model posing behind LG premium IPS monitors E83 and E93.

BERLIN, Aug. 28, 2012 – LG Electronics (LG) unveiled two new premium IPS monitors today at the IFA tradeshow in Berlin, the EA93 and EA83. The EA93 is designed to enjoy variety of entertainment and the EA83 is specifically crafted to handle graphics-intensive applications. The most noticeable feature on the EA93 is the cinematic screen, a 21:9 display –- the same ratio used in real movie theaters –that works as a superb solution for home entertainment and multitasking. The EA83 lets consumers take advantage of Wide Quad High Definition (WQHD) resolution (2560×1440 pixels). WQHD offers ample screen real estate for power users looking to multitask and provides one of the widest color spaces available. The monitor accurately reproduces 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color palette, providing graphics experts with a superior level of imaging quality.

“Through continuous innovation of our IPS monitors, we are raising the user experience to a whole new level for home entertainment and graphic professional use,” said J.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the IT Business Unit at the LG Home Entertainment Company. “The EA93’s immersive 21:9 cinematic screen and the EA83’s advantages when it comes to advanced graphics applications make these newest monitors compelling additions to our premium IPS monitor lineup.”

Ideal Multimedia and Multitasking Solution
The 29-inch EA93 boasts 2560 x 1080 resolution, and since the aspect ratio is identical to that of a typical movie theater screen, contents are shown just the way they were intended. But it isn’t only the size of the screen that makes the monitor so adept with multimedia, the EA93 accurately captures 100 percent of the defined sRGB color space, and the monitor delivers 300nit brightness for higher quality, more lifelike colors. Put simply, IPS technology plus a cinematic screen is the ideal combination for entertainment.

The extra-wide screen is also useful in work situations, helping to improve productivity. The 4-Screen Split feature can divide the display into four segments, transforming the monitor into an advanced multitasking tool. The additional Dual Link-up function allows two devices to connect to the monitor simultaneously. Sharing files from two devices at the same time — a PC and a smartphone — has never been easier.

Graphics Powerhouse
The EA83 was designed to be a comprehensive monitor solution for filmmakers, photographers, designers, and other graphics experts by providing a combination of superior resolution and lifelike colors. The WQHD (2560×1440 pixel) high resolution IPS monitor provides vivid picture quality while featuring one of the widest color spaces in its category. Expressing colors not available within sRGB, the EA83 is able to display 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color space and gives graphics professionals the exact colors they’re looking for.

LG’s innovative IPS monitor is capable of producing images that are practically identical to their real-life counterparts. The EA83 ships with software and hardware color calibrators, enabling graphics professionals to ensure that the screen always displays the most accurate and natural colors.

Visitors to IFA will be able to experience both the EA93 and EA83 IPS monitors firsthand at the LG Electronics stand in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin.

· Live Zooming allows zooming in and out while viewing a video;
· Dual Screen Dual Play, not only allows mirroring between the smartphone and a TV, it also has the ability to

display different content on each screen. For example, a slide presentation can be displayed on the TV

while the Optimus G shows the accompanying speaking notes;

·  QuickMemo, first seen in the Optimus Vu:, allows users to write, draw, or jot a memo directly on the captured

screen with their finger for sharing instantly with others as an attachment or a URL;
· Time Catch Shot allows users to select and save the best shot among the images taken just before the

shutter button is depressed;
· Cheese Shutter takes a photo when a voice command is spoken.
The added UX features are anticipated to provide instant and intuitive productivity to complete tasks beyond simple multitasking.
Innovative and Modern Look
LG maintained its differentiated design philosophy with the Optimus G. The Optimus G is encased in an eye-catching slim body epitomizing timeless beauty that perfectly demonstrates LG’s design philosophy. Zerogap Touch display contributed significantly to the design of the Optimus G as it reduced the thickness of the device enabling Optimus G to fit more comfortably in the hand. And the jet black front display flows smoothly into the body for a seamless look with no gaps.
“We are confident that users will have a superior experience with everything that we’re offering in the Optimus G,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Optimus G isn’t just another high-performance phone with the latest bells and whistles. It’s a collaboration of some of the best component makers on the planet coming together for a singular cause, to develop a smartphone that stands out in a sea of me-too devices.”
NTT DOCOMO will be the first to unveil a Japanese edition of the Optimus G. The global version of the device will be launched in Korea in September, followed by other markets worldwide.

BERLIN, Aug. 27, 2012 –- LG Electronics (LG) will be unveiling its new Smart TV game portal, Game World, at IFA 2012 in Berlin. Anticipating a new era of downloadable casual 3D games, LG developed Game World exclusively for its CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup. The portal provides a user-friendly way to search, purchase, and play game apps -– in both 2D and 3D – through an intuitive interface. Many of the games can be played with LG’s Magic Remote or with any third-party game pad.
“Game World is a wonderful source of games -– especially 3D games –- which are suitable for everyone,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company. “Many popular titles will be available along with games developed exclusively for LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs. By making the most of the capabilities of LG 3D TVs, Game World will allow us to push the boundaries of 3D gaming and expand the market.”
A simplified user experience begins with the main menu, which prominently displays a menu bar listing four categories -– Featured, Top Chart, New and Genre -– for quick access to the contents. The Featured category comprises some of the hottest games available, including games recommended by LG. Top Chart offers the most popular paid as well as freeware games. The New link lists the most recent games available in Game World while the Genre option gives access to game titles in the following categories: action, adventure, arcade, puzzle, RPG, shooter, simulation, sports, and strategy.
The main menu of Game World also provides a tutorial, with manuals and instructions for playing with a Magic Remote or a game pad. The My Games section links users to all previously purchased games and displays a list of the most frequently played games, making it easy to find the next big hit. The titles available on Game World will consist mainly of family-friendly titles, with most titles being compatible with LG Magic Remote’s gestures and movement capabilities and many also playable in 3D.
Game World will be launched globally in the second half of this year.

LG LOOKS TO VERTICAL INTEGRATION TO DEVELOP ITS NEXT GENERATION SMARTPHONE

LG Electronics, LG Chem, LG Display, LG Innotek
Collaborate on Most Technologically Advanced Device to Date

SEOUL, Aug. 26 -– The next major smartphone from LG Electronics (LG) will be a as significant for the way it was developed as for its performance and specifications. That’s because LG Electronics and its vertically-integrated sister companies LG Chem, LG Display and LG Innotek developed the device together from the start to include each company’s best technology and innovation to set a new standard in the smartphone market.

As the first Quad-Core LTE smartphone to utilize Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon™ S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, LG’s upcoming device will not only offer blazing fast performance but also longer battery life, thinner profile, brighter display and a new touchscreen panel technology as a result of the vertically-integrated development process.

LG Chem, Korea’s oldest and largest chemical company and a global innovator in electric car batteries, developed a new battery that offers greater energy capacity without compromising on size and weight. Standard mobile phone batteries have a lifespan of 500 charges in best-case conditions. Utilizing LG Chem’s high-density technology, the battery that was developed for the new flagship smartphone provides more power than other similarly-sized batteries by running 60 percent more efficiently. The new battery has a lifespan of 800 cycles, a first for a mobile device.

Industry leader LG Display’s contribution to the project was in the development of a new mobile display that is clearer than AMOLED displays but requires less power. LG Display’s True HD IPS+ Display is sharper than today’s AMOLED displays due to its high pixel density of 320ppi (1280×768 pixels) and Stripe RGB IPS Panel. The new display is capable of generating 470 nits of brightness while consuming 70 percent less power compared when displaying a white background. Furthermore, True HD IPS+ Display does not suffer from screen burn-in as AMOLED displays have been known to do.

Partnering with LG Display, solution-provider LG Innotek developed the G2 Touch Hybrid Display after investing significantly to raise its R&D capabilities in touchscreen technology. The G2 Touch Hybrid Display is a unibody unit that eliminates the gap between the glass and the LCD panel as found in traditional touchscreens. As a result, the thickness of LG Innotek’s touchscreen panel was reduced by 30 percent and displays images that seem to “touch” the fingertip without the glass creating a barrier in between.

“Working closely with our affiliate companies allowed us a degree of control that very few smartphone makers have with their component partners,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our next smartphone will be a game changer for us because we were able to incorporated all the best-of-best technologies from our sister companies with one single objective in mind -– to give customers the best user experience that we were collectively capable of.”

LG CINEMA 3D SMART TV LEADS REVOLUTION IN TV INDUSTRY WITH BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGIES

FPR Technology, Smart TV Features and Innovative CINEMA SCREEN Design
Contribute to Make LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TV Critical and Commercial Success

LG’s 55-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV model 55LM9600.

SEOUL, Aug. 23, 2012 -– Rarely is a technology trend so pronounced that it has the power to shift buying habits of an entire world. Light bulbs led to the extinction of oil lamps, music on convenient cassette tapes contributed to the demise of vinyl records, and smartphones managed to demolish the PDA industry in the new millennium.
LG Electronics (LG) is currently in a similar position historically. In the span of only 18 months, LG has turned the TV industry on its head with the introduction of 3D Smart TVs featuring a newfangled technology called Film Patterned Retarder (FPR), which challenged the popular 3D TV technology at the time that relied on shutter glasses (SG). Unlike SG 3D TVs, LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TVs do not require heavy and bulky glasses that need regular recharging because LG’s 3D TVs use inexpensive and light-weight, flicker-free glasses identical to those worn at movie theaters.
As the competing 3D technologies fought for consumer acceptance, the awareness of 3D products and the volume of 3D content grew. With popular 3D movies available on DVD, there was now a strong reason to upgrade to a 3D Smart TV, especially for families with children. According to market research company, DisplaySearch, sales of 3D TVs are anticipated to reach around 25 million units this year.
In addition to being more comfortable and flicker-free, LG’s 3D Smart TVs also produces less crosstalk, allowing for extended use without headaches. With such a clear advantage in comfort over competitors’ models, LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV began to receive more and more positive reviews from leading media outlets, building up product leadership and visibility in the 3D TV market. The tide had begun to turn in favor of FPR.

This year, LG will further strengthening its position in the 3D market by making a greater percentage of its total TV products 3D-capable. LG also introduced CINEMA SCREEN design which reduced the 3D Smart TV’s bezel to to a negligible level and increased the size of its largest TV to 84 inches, able to display an amazing 8 million pixels. LG also reached out to the influential gaming community with an annual event, LG CINEMA 3D Game Festival.
The combination of Smart TV features, abundant 3D content and easy-to-use User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI), such as Home Dashboard and intuitive Magic Remote have helped LG to meet the needs of consumers who have always needed a strong reason to upgrade their TVs.
Here is just a short list of the recent accolades LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV has received to date from influential consumer magazines:
Which? (UK): Selected LG’s 47-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV (47LM860) as a Best Buy product with excellent HD picture quality and superior sound as well as the well thought-out Magic Remote.
CNET: Awarded Editor’s Choice designation to LG’s 55-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV (55LM9600) and 42-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV (42LM660T). Noting the excellent 3D performance, CNET said LG’s products were the best passive 3D TV on the market. Commenting on the 42-inch CINEMA 3D Smart TV, CNET UK praised “its sumptuous design, excellent Smart TV features, top-notch 3D support and pristine HD images.”
Digital Trends (USA): Gave CINEMA 3D Smart TV (55LM6700) 9 out of 10 stars and an Editor’s Choice designation.

HiVi (Japan): Leading Japanese AV magazine, HiVi, and top Japanese daily, Nikkei, wrote glowingly of LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, a rarity in a country that is historically challenging for foreign TV brands.
LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TV will be on display in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin during IFA 2012 along with other LG Home Entertainment products.

LG LAUNCHES WORLD’S FIRST 84-INCH UD 3D TV WITH UNPARALLEL PICTURE QUALITY

Breaking New Ground in Home Entertainment with 4K Ultra Definition,
Industry-leading 3D Technology and Smart TV Features

Two models posing at either side of the world’s first 84-inch Ultra Definition 3D TV by LG.

SEOUL, Aug. 22, 2012 -– LG Electronics (LG) today introduced the world’s first 84-inch Ultra Definition (UD) 3D TV in the Korean market. LG’s UD 3D TV is the company’s response to growing consumer demand for larger, more immersive home TVs with greater functionality. The UD 3D TV introduces a number of new smart features with the aim of providing greater convenience and simpler interaction.

“The 4K display market is still in its infancy but it was important for LG to claim a stake in this space,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company, “LG’s UD 3D TV represents a whole new level of home viewing experience because it offers every advanced technology we currently have to offer.”

LG UD 3D TV boasts astonishing picture quality with 8 million pixels per frame, four times the resolution (3840×2160) of existing Full HD TV panels, due in large part to LG’s advanced Triple XD Engine. The additional Resolution Upscaler Plus allows images from external sources such as hard drives and user-generated content websites to be rendered in higher detail.

Bringing this exciting new experience to the 3D entertainment arena, LG has equipped its UD 3D TV with CINEMA 3D technology to ensure the impressively large display provides the most immersive viewing experience possible. 3D Depth Control allows viewers to fine-tune the “distance” between near and far objects on the screen for a custom 3D experience. The 3D Sound Zooming feature then analyzes the on-screen objects to generate sound according to their location and movement.

LG’s newest Magic Remote allows users to intuitively access and navigate the Home Dashboard. LG’s Smart TV ecosystem now includes approximately 1,400 apps and access to a growing community of premium content services such as 3D World with a wide array of movies and games. Even more media content can be accessed via portable devices such as laptops, mobile phones, tablets and flash memory drives using Smart Share Plus. The imbedded 2D to 3D conversion engine expands the availability of 3D content and Dual Play takes head-to-head game play to a whole new level by allowing opponents to simultaneously see different images on the same screen. With Dual Play, split-screen gaming is a thing of the past.

LG’s UD 3D TV also features a 2.2 Speaker System consisting of two 10W speakers and two 15W woofers, which reinforce the sound to produce a lush audio experience that perfectly complements the extraordinary visuals produced by the massive screen, creating a theater-like experience in the home.

LG’s 84-inch UD 3D TV will roll-out in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America starting in September. Visitors to IFA 2012 will be able to experience the TV for themselves at the LG Electronics stand in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin.
