LG PRODUCTS RECOGNIZED WITH INTERNATIONAL DESIGN EXCELLENCE AWARDS

IDSA Honors LG 2012 Home Entertainment Products for Design Breakthroughs

People hold an array of LG's latest products that have received accolades from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA)

SEOUL, July 3, 2012 -– LG Electronics received accolades from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), earning multiple International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA®), the world’s premier product design competition.

IDEA 2012 honorees include LG’s 55-inch OLED TV and LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TV with Magic Remote. An LG concept product also was honored. This IDEA recognition follows on the heels of 12 LG products earning red dot design awards earlier this year and 14 being honored with iF awards, making LG one of the most recognized consumer electronics and appliance companies this design season.

LG’s 55-inch OLED TV (Silver)
The world’s slimmest 55-inch OLED TV from LG was first showcased at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show, where it was recognized as the best new product of the year. At the World IT Show (WIS) in Seoul, it received the Republic of Korea Presidential Award for Multimedia Technology.

With its 4mm Paper Slim design and light 10kg weight utilizing carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and white, red, green and blue (WRGB) technology, LG’s OLED TV boasts 4-Color Pixels and a Color Refiner, for the most consistent, natural and accurate picture. LG’s 4-Color Pixel technology relies on a white sub-pixel to perfect the color output. This innovative WRGB technology sets LG’s OLED TV apart from conventional three-color RGB systems. Because it requires fewer layers, it is also the primary reason LG was able to reduce the TV’s thickness and weight. The CFRP that LG utilizes for the casing is a superior, high-quality material more commonly found in race cars and aircraft. The design of the TV ultimately aims to maximize the total immersion of the viewer, hence the minimized bezel. Likewise, the harmony of technology and design fits well with virtually any interior décor.

LG’s LM8600 CINEMA 3D Smart TV with Magic Remote (Bronze)
Model LM8600 represents a popular series in the new LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV lineup for 2012. The LM8600 features LG’s unique CINEMA SCREEN Design with a barely visible bezel, offering an elegant, streamlined and modern look. With little in the way of physical obstruction, LG’s LM8600 with CINEMA SCREEN Design has garnered much praise for its ability to complement any interior space in both the home and office. The LM8600 received a red dot design award in March.

LG’s new Magic Remote brings a much desired boost to user convenience. It combines Smart TV, cable, satellite and IPTV set-top box controls into a single remote to reduce living room clutter. The Remote’s ergonomic design is easier to hold onto, resulting in a more comfortable CINEMA 3D Smart TV experience. The smooth, curved shape accommodates the viewer’s grip while its new four modes -– Voice, Wheel, Pointing and Gesture -– have replaced conventional push buttons with a set of cleverly designed controls that are intuitive and extremely user-friendly. The Magic Remote also includes a 3D button, transforming 2D content to 3D for limitless 3D content.

The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is the world’s oldest, largest, member-driven society for product design, industrial design, interaction design, human factors, ergonomics, design research, design management, universal design and related design fields. IDSA organizes the renowned International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) competition annually; hosts the International Design Conference and five regional conferences each year; and publishes Innovation, a quarterly on design, and designBytes, a weekly e-newsletter highlighting the latest headlines in the design world. LEADING TV MAKERS LAUNCH SMART TV ALLIANCE

Provide Infrastructure for Effective Collaboration
Among Smart TV Makers and App Developers

Logo of Smart TV Alliance.

SEOUL, KOREA / AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS / SAN RAMON, (CALIF.) USA, June 20, 2012 -– Founding members LG Electronics and TP Vision (for Philips TVs) today officially established Smart TV Alliance with other Japanese TV manufacturers in the process of joining. The Alliance forms a cooperation that aims at enhancing the Smart TV experience by creating a non-proprietary ecosystem for application developers to create attractive, platform-independent services. The foundation of the Smart TV Alliance comes after the collaboration announcement of the mentioned TV makers at IFA 2011 in Berlin. The names of other players that are joining the Alliance will be announced accordingly on the Alliance’s website.

Expanded Market Opportunities
“Before today, the Smart TV industry was a very difficult market for both TV manufacturers and application developers as TV’s from different brands used different platforms and technologies,” said Bong-seok Kwon of LG Electronics, President of Smart TV Alliance. “Smart TV Alliance creates a larger playing field which encourages developers to create more and better TV applications at the same time giving manufacturers and consumers the richest source of movies-on-demand, music services, games, social networking and more.”

Reduced Time and Costs
Alain Perrot, a Smart TV Alliance Executive board member from TP Vision, is convinced that reduced application development time and costs will be beneficial for all: “Instead of spending valuable time on porting and testing on different platforms, developers can focus their creativity solely on realising apps that consumers will enjoy. Now we can really make it interesting and fun for everybody.”

To make it easy for new partners to join in this effort and to facilitate effective discussions, the founding Smart TV makers have established Smart TV Alliance Consortium (www.SmartTV-Alliance.org). One of the primary objectives of this consortium is to help define technical specifications which will enable application developers to create their applications once and run them on multiple TVs regardless of the platform.

To enable this kind of development process, Smart TV Alliance will make the first version of its software development kit (SDK) available on its website which developers can download at no cost and use to develop their applications. The SDK is based on open web technologies such as HTML5 and allows for developed web applications to run on Smart TV’s from participating members regardless of the underlying platform.

Smart TV Alliance plans to build on this first version and announce specifications of SDK 2.0 followed by the actual SDK 2.0 software release at the end of this year. With SDK 2.0, developers will be able to create applications for 2013 TV sets from participating Alliance members.

Smart TV Alliance is designed to benefit all participating members, TV makers, applications developers and content providers alike, and welcomes any interested organizations to join. The latest information about its activities and plans can be found on the official webpage (www.SmartTV-Alliance.org) including membership, SDK and plans for developer forums.

ECO-FRIENDLY LG CINEMA 3D TV RECOGNIZED BY TÜV RHEINLAND

47LM7600 TV Achieves Environment Triple Crown: Green Mark, Climatop, Ecoflower

LG employees presenting the Green Mark certificate from TÜV Rheinland for the LG CINEMA 3D TV model 47LM7600.

SEOUL, June 12, 2012 –- LG Electronics (LG) announced that its CINEMA 3D TV (Model 47LM7600) has been certified with the Green Mark from TÜV Rheinland, one of the world’s first TVs to receive such recognition.

TÜV Rheinland, the world’s leading inspection, testing and certification service provider, awards the Green Mark only to products that pass comprehensive tests for environmental friendliness and sustainability. The tests look at energy efficiency as well as the absence of hazardous chemicals. The product’s carbon footprint is also calculated, and consideration is given to safety and social compliance.

“The Green Mark is validation that the effort we put behind the 47LM7600 has not gone unnoticed by industry experts,” said Il-geun Kwon, Head of LG Electronics’ LCD TV Research and Development Lab. “LG engineers believe very strongly that producing a great TV requires more than just a fantastic picture and superb design. It also has to operate with as little impact on the environment as possible.“

The 47LM7600 requires 20 percent less energy compared to the 47LW5500, its predecessor. Thanks to the lightweight 3D panel and revolutionary slim bezel design, LG’s certified 3D TV is 14 percent lighter than its closest competitor. The Green Mark certification follows in the footsteps of the Climatop and Ecoflower labels which the 47LM7600 received earlier this year.

“Manufacturers are aggressively moving into eco-friendly technologies to meet the growing demand from consumers who are interested in products that leave the smallest environmental footprint and reduce energy costs,” Kwon added. “LG is committed to developing products that minimize their effect on our surroundings and certification from experts like TÜV is proof that we’re meeting and often surpassing industry standards.”

LG OPTIMUS L-SERIES TO DEBUT IN PEROU FASHION SPREAD

Vanity Fair UK Teams Up with LG to Introduce
New Design Philosophy for Mobile Devices

Two different front views of LG Optimus L7 next to an image involving 9 different models in posing in different positions while holding LG Optimus L-Series smartphones

SEOUL, June 8, 2012 –- LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled an exclusive collaboration with Vanity Fair UK and British celebrity fashion photographer Ralph John Perou to bring to life L-Style, the brand’s new design identity, for style connoisseurs with an eye for great technology.

An established portrait music and fashion photographer who has worked with personalities such as Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and Helen Mirren, Perou helmed the style-meets-technology photo shoot that is to be featured in the July issue of the magazine. The series of black and white photographs showcases models in various poses with LG’s newest Optimus L-Series smartphones, illustrating the five elements of L-Style: Modern Square Style, Harmonized Design Contrast, Floating Mass Technology, Seamless Layout and Sensuous Slim Shape.

The artistic concept behind the pictorial spread was jointly created by LG, Vanity Fair and Perou. LG and Vanity Fair each brought ideas on how technology and fashion can be best represented during the shoot while Perou married the two together seamlessly with his passion and creativity.

The models for the pictorial spread come from diverse backgrounds, from dancers to makeup artists to neuroscientists but are chosen for one unifying factor –- their effortless and strong sense of style, much like the audience the LG Optimus L-Series is tailored for.

“People think photographers are only interested in how things look but personally, I want everything to ‘work’ as well as ‘wow,’” said Perou. “So it was great to be involved in this style and substance collaboration of LG and Vanity Fair. We deliberately chose intelligent, beautiful, vibrant people to photograph to reflect the exciting, sleek, tech-loaded phones.”

“LG is thrilled to be collaborating with Vanity Fair UK and Perou on this campaign,” said Brian Na, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Sales and Marketing for LG Mobile Communications Company. “Our main goal is to evangelize the essence of L-Style to style connoisseurs across the UK and we could not have asked for better partners in this regard.”

The LG Optimus L-Series is designed for fashion-forward consumers who are keen to express their taste and style with their mobile devices. The series comprises three smartphones: L3 and L7 which were launched earlier this year and L5 which will be available in the second half.

Both personal TVs feature IPS panels, boasting lifelike color and extremely wide viewing angles.

“With the integration of multimedia entertainment and the internet, LG is at the frontier of cutting-edge TV technology,” said J.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of IT Business Unit of LG Home Entertainment Company. We are developing unique personal TVs designed to meet the needs of changing consumer habits, whether that customer’s passion is 3D gaming, internet browsing or simply watching their favorite sitcom.”

The personal TVs boast Picture-in-Picture (PIP) capabilities, enabling viewers to open multiple screens simultaneously and watch TV while working on their PC. LG personal TVs are equipped with In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels instead of conventional Twisted Nematic (TN) panels. Smooth Color Change eliminates blur generated by rapid motion in action scenes, sports or video games resulting in extremely sharp and clear images. Thanks to an impressive wide viewing-angle (178 degrees), viewers can enjoy high quality images without any color shift -– sitting, standing or lying down. The combination of all these technologies provides a rich, comfortable viewing experience.

With the newest in CINEMA 3D technology, the DM2752 premium personal TV offers comfortable 3D viewing with extremely light, flicker-free glasses. And the DM2752 includes an easy-to-use 2D to 3D conversion engine so viewers can watch unlimited high-quality 3D content on the fly. The 3D Effect Mode sharpens the converted images to offer a clearer and more immersive 3D experience. The conversion function works with or without a PC and engages automatically for games, delivering the ultimate 3D gaming experience. What’s more, LG’s Dual Play function enables competing gamers to see two different full screen images at the same time on the same TV, making for incredible head-to-head action.

Europeans have taken notice of LG’s lineup of personal monitor TVs for their technology and versatility. According to a review conducted by CHIP, one of the most widely read computer publications in Germany, LG’s 23/24-inch premium M2382 was recognized as the top choice among all monitors reviewed with TV capability.

LG DM2752 will be available starting in July while the M2752 is now available in select markets throughout Europe.

LG USHERS IN A NEW ERA OF VIEWING PLEASURE WITH “ULTIMATE DISPLAY” OLED TV

Based on WRGB Technology, World’s Largest and Slimmest OLED TV Demonstrates
LG’s TV Leadership by Delivering Unrivalled Picture Quality with Gorgeous Design

MONACO, May 23, 2012 -– LG Electronics (LG) ushered in a new era of television with the unveiling of the world’s largest and slimmest 55-inch OLED TV on European soil at Monaco’s renowned Salle des Etoiles. In front of an audience of 400 dealers, journalists and special guest F1 champion Sebastian Vettel, LG officials vowed to develop the most advanced commercial OLED TV in the market and to be the first company to bring these TVs to European consumers in the second half of the year.
“In the history of television, there have been very few innovations as impactful as the coming of OLED TV,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “We say THE ULTIMATE DISPLAY because LG OLED TV is truly above all expectations and beyond everyone’s imagination with uncompromising picture quality and beautiful design. This year, we plan to make OLED synonymous with LG.”
The OLED TV’s WRGB technology is the culmination of years of research and development at LG, the company behind the world’s first commercialized 15-inch OLED TV in 2009. LG’s 4 Color Pixel technology relies on a white sub-pixel to perfect the color output. A Color Refiner enhances the image, resulting in pictures that are the most vibrant, natural and comfortable to the human eye. The screen also delivers a perfect viewing experience without distortion or loss of contrast regardless of ambient brightness or viewing angle.
And unlike LCD or LED displays which require backlights, OLED TVs generate their own light, eliminating the need for backlighting. Furthermore, by utilizing carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) for the exterior, LG engineers were able to create a final product with a thickness of only 4mm and weighed only 10kg. Thus the Paper Slim design philosophy was born. What’s more, LG’s OLED TV combines the company’s industry-leading CINEMA 3D technology with Smart TV capabilities, creating the most immersive and comprehensive home entertainment experience on the market today.
“With OLED TV leading our premium product lineup in Europe, we have a very strong case to become the number one TV brand in this region.” said Stanley Cho, head of LG’s Europe Operations. “Until that day, we will continue to develop the products that have made us the most innovative home entertainment company in the industry.”
Along with OLED TV, LG introduced the company’s latest premium TV lineup for the European market. Ranging from CINEMA 3D Smart TVs with CINEMA SCREEN Design to Ultra Definition (UD) 3D TVs, this year’s TV lineup is LG’s most aggressive in terms of technology and design, reinforcing LG’s premium image.

• Live Zooming which allows viewers to zoom in and out by pinching during video playback;
• Video Speed Control for precise control of the playback speed of a video;
• Thumbnail List Play which enables users to view thumbnails of videos playing while watching another video full screen.

The advanced 8.0MP BSI (backside illumination) sensor camera of the Optimus 4X HD comes with a powerful new feature that allows users to select and save the best shot among the images taken just before pressing the shutter button.

And with MHL (Mobile High Definition Link) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance), there are multiple ways to connect the phone to TVs and other devices in the home.

The Optimus 4X HD will be rolled out in Europe followed by countries in Asia, CIS, South and Central America in the coming months.
