LG AND INTEL SIGN STRATEGIC ALLIANCE FOR INTEL WIRELESS DISPLAY (WiDi) TECHNOLOGY

LG and Intel Collaborate on Intel WiDi to Enhance Content
Accessibility of CINEMA 3D Smart TVs

Hee-Sung Lee, country manager of Intel Korea, and Seog-ho Ro, senior vice president of LG Home Entertainment Company’s TV Business Unit, commemorate their new alliance with a handshake.

SEOUL, Dec. 15, 2011 – LG Electronics (LG) and Intel entered into a strategic alliance to adopt and jointly promote Intel® Wireless Display (WiDi) technology. Intel WiDi will be embedded into next year’s LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, making them the first in the TV industry to feature Intel WiDi technology. Intel WiDi is a wireless connectivity interface which allows for instant, high-definition viewing of content stored in notebooks and other external mobile devices on large screen TVs, projectors or monitors.

“Through this strategic alliance, CINEMA 3D Smart TV users will be able to access a wider variety of content in a more convenient manner,” said Seog-ho Ro, Senior Vice President of LG Home Entertainment Company’s TV Business Unit. “Intel WiDi will be one of several features that will enhance the user convenience of our CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, further differentiating our products from the competition.”

“Intel is planning to expand Intel WiDi technology to various devices to provide consumers the seamless, smarter usage experience,” said Hee-Sung Lee, Country Manager of Intel Korea. “Through this collaboration with LG Electronics, LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV users could also benefit from Intel® WiDi without the need to purchase an external adapter.”

Intel WiDi not only enables sharing of stored content, it also transfers onto CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, projectors and monitors a spectrum of online contents –- such as YouTube videos and streaming TV shows from broadcast websites -– that are accessible through notebooks and other mobile devices. Users can view such contents through the expansive and immersive high-definition CINEMA 3D display.

Like wired connectivity standards, such as HDMI and USB cables, Intel WiDi does not require an active wireless internet or Wi-Fi connection to transfer content between external mobile devices and CINEMA 3D Smart TVs. Intel WiDi establishes a direct connection between the Wi-Fi chips embedded in the external mobile devices and the CINEMA 3D Smart TVs.

Furthermore, Intel WiDi does not tie down the mobile device during real-time content sharing. Users may perform other tasks on their notebooks and tablet PCs while simultaneously streaming content to a CINEMA 3D Smart TV, projector or monitor.

LG and Intel would undertake co-marketing activities and Intel WiDi-enabled LG CINEMA 3D products will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next month in Las Vegas.

LG INTRODUCES WORLD’S FIRST HD LTE SMARTPHONE TO JAPAN

LG’s Global Device Now Available in Three of the World’s Biggest LTE Markets

A woman in traditional Japanese clothing holds up LG Optimus LTE and shows its front view, while two LG Optimus LTEs showing front and rear views are displayed in front of her

SEOUL, Dec. 14, 2011 –- Following launches in North America and Korea, LG Electronics (LG) today introduced its Optimus LTE (Model L-01D) smartphone in Japan, one of the largest LTE-serviced countries. The launch of the handset comes on the heels of LG’s successful collaboration with NTT Docomo in 2010 to introduce the country’s first LTE data card, affirming LG’s commitment to supporting NTT Docomo’s commercial LTE service rollout.
“The Optimus LTE is one of LG’s most promising devices and has already been received well in Korea, Canada and the United States,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “As a worldwide innovator in mobile LTE technology, we are committed to developing high-quality devices that showcase our technical experience and True HD IPS display.”
LG and NTT Docomo collaborated to make the Japanese Optimus LTE as unique as possible. The red color available on the Japanese edition of LG Optimus LTE will be available exclusively to Docomo customers as will the 1seg digital TV and NFC (Near Field Communication) features.
Pre-launch word of mouth in Japan for the Optimus LTE, one of LG’s best-selling smartphones in Korea, has been favorable. Leading Japanese IT publication Get Navi wrote that the Optimus LTE was the best product in NTT Docomo’s high-end lineup. Nikkei included the Optimus LTE as one of its top 10 smartphones recommendations in 2011.
Most reviewers praised the Optimus LTE’s 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 (16:9 ratio) True HD IPS display which portrays sharp and crisp images with 2.76 million sub-pixels. The display, developed in partnership with sister company LG Display, is superior in color accuracy, clarity, natural color and battery efficiency providing the ultimate viewing experience for HD content.
According to a recent report by Jefferies & Company, LG was listed as the global leader in LTE patents with ownership of 23 percent of approximately 1,400 LTE patents filed worldwide, with a financial value of almost USD 8 billion. LG demonstrated the world’s first LTE technology in 2007 and developed the world’s first LTE modem chipset in 2008. LG introduced the world’s fastest LTE technology in 2010 and conducted the world’s first video phone call on a LTE network in 2011. LG’s first LTE smartphone, RevolutionTM, was launched in the US earlier this year.

LG AIR CONDITIONER FIRST TO RECEIVE CARBON FREE CERTIFICATION

With a Reputation for Modest Energy Consumption, LG’s Multi V III is
Recognized by Carbonfund.org for its Credentials

A wider shot of a woman holding up LG MULTI V III’s carbon-free certification letter in front of the air conditioner appliance.

SEOUL, Dec. 13, 2011 -– LG Electronics (LG) announced today that its Multi V III (ARUN072DT3) is the world’s first air conditioner to receive the Carbon Free Certification from Carbonfund.org, a North American authority on evaluating the impact individuals and businesses have on the environment.

Carbonfund.org grants the Carbon Free label based on emissions generated by a product throughout its entire lifecycle, spanning from manufacturing and shipment to usage and final disposal. The Multi V III’s Carbon Free recognition results largely from LG’s own lifecycle analysis (LCA) program which pursues reductions in the company’s overall carbon footprint.

The Multi V III was designed to be powerful. Underpinned by LG’s unique Inverter Technology, the Multi V III delivers a coefficient of performance (COP) level of 4.6, one of the highest COPs in the industry. In other words, the Multi V III emits less CO2 compared to any other air conditioner, helping to slow global warming.

“Consumers in North America have shown a very strong interest,” said Hwan-yong Noh, head of LG Electronics’ Air Conditioning & Energy Solution Company. “We are delighted to be able to offer a product that meets Carbonfund.org’s incredibly high standards. As a total HVAC and energy solution company, LG is committed to developing products that are technologically superior.”

The Multi V III will be available in North America from the end of this year. LG has already shown an upward growth in North America’s variable refrigerant flow (VRF) market from 4 percent in 2010 to 8.9 percent in 2011, an increase of 201 percent.

LG EXPANDS ITS GLASSES-FREE 3D MONITOR LINEUP

Latest Monitor from LG Takes Glasses-Free 3D To A Whole New Level

A model presents two of LG’s 25-inch Glasses-Free 3D monitors.

SEOUL, Nov. 30, 2011 -– LG Electronics (LG) extends its glasses-free 3D monitor lineup with the 25-inch DX2500, which incorporates glasses-free parallax barrier 3D and head-tracking technologies. With the DX2500, LG becomes the first in the industry to receive TÜV Rheinland certification for a glasses-free 3D monitor.
“LG is taking glasses-free 3D monitors mainstream with the DX2500,” said Si-hwan Park, Vice President of the Monitor Division at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “With the DX2500, we are making the LG brand synonymous with glasses-free 3D monitors. In 2012, we’ll continue to expand our range of glasses-free 3D monitors featuring different designs and advanced functions.”
For optimal viewing of 3D images, existing glasses-free 3D products generally require viewers to stay within a tightly restricted angle and distance. However, the DX2500 has removed this restriction with the parallax barrier 3D and head-tracking technologies, allowing viewers greater freedom of movement, enabling a more comfortable user experience.
Position tracking in the DX2500 works via a camera embedded in the monitor, which detects changes in the user’s eye and head position in real-time. Based on this information, the monitor calculates the angle and position of the viewer and adjusts the image to display the optimal 3D effect. And with an advanced 2D to 3D conversion function, DX2500 users can view unlimited 3D content such as movies, photos and games all with a single mouse click.
Now available in Korea, the DX2500 will be launched worldwide in early 2012.

LG SHOWCASES RESIDENTIAL SMART GRID AT WORLD SMART GRID EXPO 2011

LG Offers Sneak Peak into its First-Ever Residential Smart Grid, Smart Place

People check out the functions of Smart Grid in front of an LG TV

SEOUL, Nov. 17, 2011 -– LG Electronics (LG) is showcasing Smart Place at the World Smart Grid Expo 2011 in Seoul, Korea. Smart Place is a comprehensive Smart Grid network connected to homes on Jeju Island’s 185km2 Jeju Smart Grid Test-Bed, where approximately 6,000 homes are located.
Smart Grid implements information technology (IT) and telecommunications technology into existing power grids, enabling electricity providers and consumers to share real time information pertaining to energy usage, in order to maximize energy efficiency. In the case of Smart Place, Smart Grid technology is applied to homes, where many traditionally energy-intensive electronics products are used, such as home appliances and home entertainment products. Smart Place increases energy efficiency at home by reducing electricity consumption and managing the use of alternative energy.
Smart Place centers on the LG Smart Server, which functions as a gateway between the power company and the various electronics products scattered throughout a home, such as CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, Smart Refrigerators and Smart Washing Machines, as well as solar panels. Smart Server gathers real time updates on a family’s overall energy consumption and the resulting electricity bill. Using this information, the Smart Server centrally controls and manages the energy consumption of all connected devices. Equally important, depending on the availability of recycled energy or energy generated from residential solar panels, the Smart Server automatically chooses the more economic energy supply for usage.
Each device connected to the residential Smart Grid uses its own respective LG Smart Technology to further maximize energy efficiency. When the Smart Server detects the electricity bill is becoming unusually high, LG’s CINEMA 3D Smart TVs automatically go into energy-saving mode. On a regular basis, LG Smart Refrigerators and LG Smart Air Conditioners maximize power use and cool more intensely during off-peak hours, when electricity is cheaper, and minimize energy use during peak hours. LG Smart Washing Machines perform a similar function, as they identify off-peak hours and recommend those hours for doing laundry.
While LG Electronics is the lead contractor for Smart Place, the technological achievements evidenced in Smart Place result from a synergistic effort with other LG companies, such as LG Chem, LG U+ and LG CNS.
Smart Place completed its first phase in June of this year, when LG finished construction of the required infrastructure. The second phase is currently underway and is scheduled to be finished by May 2013, when LG will have completed various tests and trials and begun expanding Smart Place to homes outside of the Jeju Smart Grid Test-Bed.
In addition to Smart Place, LG plans to expand its Smart Grid projects overseas, as evidenced in Smart Watts, a German government-funded Smart Grid project in the German city of Achen, where LG has been contracted to supply its Smart Servers and Smart Appliances.

TUV issued its certification after rigorous testing of LG’s 3D display which the agency said resolved the flickering problem which has plagued all other previous 3D notebooks. Flickering screens cause discomfort when viewed for a prolonged period of time.
“Recognition from TÜV Rheinland is especially welcome given the organization’s focus on quality and safety,” said J.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Electronics PC Business Unit. “Official certifications from leading third party authorities only help to confirm our belief that LG’s 3D technology is second to none.”
Thanks to LG’s proprietary Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) screen with Full HD 1920×1080 resolution, images on the LG A530 are significantly brighter than on shutter glasses-type 3D notebooks, meaning the LG notebook offers richer, more vivid games, movies and pictures.
The LG A530, which was introduced in Korea two months ago, is currently the top seller in the local 3D notebook segment. Behind products such as the A530, LG is well positioned to lead the global market in 3D notebooks and will be making its presence known worldwide in the coming year.
