Breaking the Ice at AHR Expo 2025: LG Leads Discussions on Cold Climate Heat Pump Innovations

To deliver innovative heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions that are Ahead of the Expected, LG continues to push the boundaries of heat pump technology in cold climates. At AHR Expo 2025 in Orlando, Florida, the company showcased its energy-efficient solutions that enhance comfort while hosting a special roundtable on the Consortium for Advanced Heat Pump Research and its vision for the industry. Three LG representatives joined the consortium to bring their knowledge and insights to the table.

As climate change continues to cause major disruption around the world, the need for high-efficiency heating and cooling systems for all temperatures has been rising. Steve Scarbrough, senior vice president and general manager of LG Air Conditioning Technologies USA, joined the panel to highlight the advantages of LG’s heat pump technology in extreme climates. LG offers a wide lineup of heat pump solutions, including water heaters, boasting its cutting-edge inverter heat pump technology. What’s more, with the introduction of a highly efficient, oil-free inverter centrifugal chiller, LG now supplies 259,000 RT of chilled water to one of the largest data centers in the world. “We are excited to bring new products to market that are customized for all kinds of environments from single small spaces to large-scale industry settings,” said Scarborough.

Although heat pumps have traditionally been associated with warmer southern climates, LG’s introduction of its Inverter Compressor to the U.S. has allowed it to build a strong lineup of heat pumps that provide effective heating in cold climates. Moreover, LG has expanded its LGRED° (Reliable to Extreme Degrees) Heat Technology to more products, facilitating high-efficiency performance under more challenging conditions.

LG has successfully constructed substantial networks in heat pump solutions by investing in research and development and strategic partnerships with key industry players. For example, LG established the Consortium for Advanced Heat Pump Research with the University of Alaska network in 2023 to conduct real-life research and testing on various types of heat pumps.

Sunwoo Kim, professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, said the consortium focuses on minimizing thermal resistance in the outdoor unit’s heat exchanger to maximize heat pump efficiency. Researchers are also trying to uncover innovative ways to integrate heat pumps with existing fossil fuel boilers. “If we have a smart and well-designed hybrid system that optimally balances the heat pump with existing traditional systems, we could significantly reduce costs and carbon dioxide emissions,” said Kim. The University of Alaska’s cold climate heat pump labs in Anchorage opened last December, and is now testing heat pump applications in the real world.

The partnership with the Universities has already borne fruit. For instance, the first joint project with the University of Alaska Fairbanks has been largely credited for the LG Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump, which won the 2025 AHR Innovation Award. “The consortium aims to become the major hub of research and education in cold climate heating systems,” said Getu Hailu, associate professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alaska Anchorage and faculty advisor for ASHRAE and ASME.

By constantly promoting deeper discussions to realize its vision for heat pump solutions, LG has once again demonstrated its unwavering dedication to breaking down barriers in cold climate heating while underscoring its status as the leading innovator of heat pumps.

LG’s Innovative HVAC Solutions Highlight Commitment to Decarbonization and Electrification

Decarbonization and electrification have emerged as defining trends in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) sector’s efforts to help combat climate change. In response to the growing call for energy solutions that prioritize both efficiency and sustainability, LG has established the ES Company, a new business division that leverages LG’s HVAC expertise to deliver innovative solutions for a better future.

The ES Company boasts a comprehensive portfolio of HVAC solutions that align with current market trends such as decarbonization and electrification. These include versatile residential air conditioners for various types of housing, commercial air conditioners for buildings, schools and public institutions, and heating solutions that serve as efficient alternatives to traditional fossil fuel boilers. Employing LG’s high-performance core technologies, the ES Company provides the efficiency, reliability and flexibility that today’s customers demand.

The Company’s product portfolio also encompasses chillers based on state-of-the-art magnetic bearing technology. These chillers, known for their performance, precision and adaptability, are increasingly regarded as the optimal class of cooling solution for AI data centers. To meet the rising demand for advanced thermal management in this fast-growing IT segment, LG has partnered with a leading global technology company to build next-generation, sustainable AI infrastructure.

LG recently showcased its latest chillers at AHR Expo 2025, an international HVAC tradeshow held in Florida. Among the innovations on display were the Oil-Free Inverter Centrifugal Chiller, which highlights the company’s sophisticated thermal management technologies, and the new LG Centrifugal Chiller, which utilizes active magnetic bearings to improve efficiency through the inverter system.

Proactively addressing the region-specific HVAC needs of different markets, LG has established a consortium dedicated to R&D for cold-climate heat pumps. The consortium now operates facilities in locations known for harsh winter conditions, such as Alaska (U.S.), Oslo (Norway) and Harbin (China). This focus on creating localized solutions demonstrates LG’s commitment to providing consistent performance and reliability to all customers, regardless of their location.

In September 2024, LG hosted the first-ever meeting of the Global Heat Pump Consortium in Seoul, South Korea. The event brought together LG’s HVAC experts and academic partners to discuss collaborative projects driven by the consortium’s regional clusters. The gathering marked a significant step toward the realization of a new generation of innovative heating solutions.

LG’s latest heat pump technology underscores the company’s commitment to decarbonization and electrification. At the 2025 AHR Expo, the LG Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump earned an Innovation Award in the Sustainable Solutions category for its outstanding performance. This advanced heat pump operates effectively at temperatures as low as negative 35 degrees Celsius (negative 31 degrees Fahrenheit), maintaining full heating capacity at negative 25 degrees Celsius (negative 13 degrees Fahrenheit), and 70 percent capacity at negative 35 degrees Celsius (negative 31 degrees Fahrenheit). This impressive solution will launch* in the U.S. in February and in Europe in the second half of the year.

LG’s competitive advantage in the HVAC sector is significantly bolstered by the success of its components business. Through the in-house development of essential components, such as compressors and motors, LG is able to ensure the quality, performance and reliability of its diverse HVAC offerings. The company’s expanded lineup of Inverter Scroll Compressors, for example, incorporates LG-designed-and-made high-capacity, high-efficiency twin rotary inverter compressors. These solutions, available in variants tailored for the commercial HVAC and residential air conditioning markets, use R32 refrigerant, which has a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675.

From residential water heaters to commercial chillers and everything in between, LG’s products showcase the versatility, innovation and dependability that have made the company one of the most trusted names in HVAC.

As a forward-looking organization and a responsible corporate citizen, LG remains unwavering in its mission to lead the global transition to decarbonization and electrification. Through the establishment of the ES Company, the development of groundbreaking heat pump technology and a strong focus on innovative, high-quality components and core-tech, LG is actively shaping the HVAC industry and paving the way to a more sustainable future.

LG remains dedicated to fostering a strong corporate culture rooted in ethical business practices. The company has implemented its Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct across all business sites and has established Human Rights Principles to uphold corporate integrity. LG continues to transparently communicate its business direction and corporate value enhancement plans, including the Future Vision 2030, the LG Electronics India IPO and shareholder return policies, ensuring meaningful engagement with stakeholders.

Furthermore, LG has reinforced its corporate governance structure by establishing clear guidelines on the independence, diversity and expertise of its independent directors, along with the implementation of its corporate governance charter.

“As a responsible global corporate citizen, LG remains dedicated to upholding the principles of good ESG management and will continue striving toward a future of shared, sustainable growth,” said Hong Sung-min, head of LG’s ESG Strategy Division.

LG Vietnam and Thailand Support Local Communities With Tech Donations

LG is dedicated to enriching the lives of people in the communities where it operates. Recently, LG offices in Vietnam and Thailand made significant contributions by donating various LG products to support local initiatives. These acts of generosity underscore LG’s global commitment to corporate social responsibility and demonstrate the positive impact a company can have when it invests in the well-being of its local communities.

In Vietnam, the Lunar New Year, or Tet, is a time of family reunions and shared experiences, with television playing a central role in these celebrations. To enhance the Tet experience for the people of Yen Bai Province, LG Vietnam donated 40 LG TVs to families who suffered significant losses during Typhoon Yagi. As part of its annual campaign, “Tet Nha la Tet Nhat” (Family Tet is the Best Tet), LG Vietnam extended support to 40 households facing severe hardships, including families of war veterans and those with meritorious services to the revolution, in the districts of Van Yen, Luc Yen and Tran Yen.

No district suffered the wrath of Typhoon Yagi more than Van Yen, where the natural disaster destroyed vast areas, damaging, eroding or completely destroying countless houses. Large stretches of cropland along the rivers and streams were submerged in deep water, causing havoc to the lives and livelihoods of the locals. Last year, LG Vietnam operated mobile and stationary laundry stations to provide much-needed assistance to these people.

Since Tet 2024, LG kicked off the “Tet Nha la Tet Nhat” campaign, named after the respected proverb “Tet Nhat.“Tet” represents a meaningful time of year when Vietnamese people prepare the best for their families, while “Nhat,” meaning “best,” aligns with LG OLED TV’s global leadership and the world-class quality of its advanced products.

The Year of the Snake marks 30 years of LG’s presence in Vietnam, symbolizing a deep commitment to continuous innovation and creative solutions for smart living. This milestone reflects LG’s dedication to improving the lives of Vietnamese customers and fulfilling its Life’s Good vision.

In Thailand, LG recently donated 50 LG gram laptops to the Thailand Collaboration for Education (TCFE) program, an initiative of the Yuvabadhana Foundation. This donation, valued at over 2,301,000 baht (USD 68,000), will benefit over 400 students at Nikomphimaisuksa School in Nakhon Ratchasima province and Piyabut School in Lopburi province, both of which lack adequate computer equipment for effective digital learning.

The donated laptops are high-performance, lightweight LG gram models equipped with Intel Core Ultra 5 Processors, making them ideal for modern AI software applications. Students in lower secondary school (Mathayom 1-3) will use these laptops to access digital curricula in science, mathematics and English. Upper secondary students (Mathayom 4-6) will leverage the laptops’ AI capabilities for advanced learning, including data analysis and enhanced comprehension.

The TCFE program aims to reduce educational inequality and promote sustainable education in Thailand by focusing on four key areas: educational accessibility, teaching and learning quality development, life skills and moral cultivation and nutrition support. LG’s laptop donation directly supports two of these areas: improving access to education by providing equipment to remote schools and enhancing teaching and learning quality by enabling digital curriculum implementation.

This donation reflects LG’s belief in the transformative power of AI in education and its commitment to ensuring all Thai youth have access to this technology. The company views this donation as part of its ongoing support for AI education in Thailand, which includes equipment donations, expertise sharing and future initiatives.

From providing essential appliances to enhancing educational opportunities, LG Vietnam and LG Thailand are actively making a difference in the lives of those around them. To learn more about the activities of LG offices around the globe, visit the LG Newsroom.
