LG CEO William Cho Shares Focus for the Future

In Year-End Address to Employees, CEO Stresses Shift to Future-Ready
Business Structure to Create New Value Recognized by Customers

LG logo

SEOUL, Dec. 23, 2022 — LG Electronics’ (LG) CEO William Cho outlined the company’s areas of focus for the future, building on the “successful changes” and “winning growth” of the past year, at his year-end address. The livestreamed discussion gave Cho the opportunity to connect with LG employees and communicate four strategic areas the company will focus on in 2023 to reshape into a future-oriented business structure.

To begin, Cho highlighted the importance of advancing LG’s business portfolio. “To increase corporate value, we need to accelerate qualitative growth and secure growth engines in areas with high potential,” Cho noted. “We will focus on maximizing the capabilities of existing businesses to strengthen the competitiveness of our core business while also rapidly fostering strategic businesses for the future.”

The CEO then continued by emphasizing the need to establish a customer-centered business operating system. “We need to produce tangible results through innovation that combines the customer experience and digital transformation,” Cho continued. “To strengthen our customer-centered mindset and improve the way we work, we aim to achieve innovative customer experiences that exceed expectations by setting clear mid- to long-term goals and roadmaps.”

Next, Cho cited the strengthening of the company’s future preparation capabilities. “We need to secure future technologies and strengthen software competitiveness through R&D, increase brand value as well as improve brand reputation, especially among the younger generation,” said Cho. “We also need to foster online businesses and intensify digital marketing to expand into the e-commerce business.”

He also noted uncertainties surrounding the business environment. To fundamentally reshape LG’s competitive edge and improve operational efficiency with the ability to preemptively respond to changes in business environment, the company recently organized a special taskforce. “We expect these measures will allow us to build a healthier corporate structure, enabling the company to constantly produce positive results and create new customer value by securing long-term competitiveness in terms of business advancement,” said Cho.

Cho asked everyone tuning in to consider what – and who – defines LG Electronics as a company. “Each and every one of us at LG is a ‘Value Creator’ for our customers. My hope is that everyone truly appreciates our customers and contemplates how we can provide them with more and better values by meeting, listening to and becoming them,” he continued. “It is because we know that the answer always lies with our customers that we keep looking deeper into their lives and gathering insights to deliver first, unique and new customer experiences.”

Cho ended his talk by reminding everyone at LG that the future will be determined by the way we think and act now, which is, ultimately, to prepare for the future. “We need to courageously go through the trials and difficulties that we inevitably encounter in our individual challenges with an optimistic attitude and positive mindset that we can definitely succeed, as we have done so far,” Cho concluded.

The LG QuadWash® Pro dishwasher, LG InstaView® Combination Double Wall Oven, Electric Double Slide-in Range, and Over-the-Range Microwave Oven boast powerful, efficient performance thanks to the company’s advanced technologies, and outstanding convenience courtesy of seamless LG ThinQ™ integration.

LG QuadWash Pro Dishwasher

For a quick and easy after-meal tidy up, LG QuadWash Pro dishwasher can get dishes and tableware spotlessly clean in just one hour. QuadWash Pro provides enhanced cleaning power, using high-pressure jets of water to spray dishes from multiple angles while simultaneously soaking them with over one million microbubbles to help break down stubborn food residue. LG’s advanced dishwasher also employs Dynamic Heat Dry™ technology, which circulates hot air throughout the dishwashing compartment for a faster drying performance and table-ready dishes right off the rack. And for the finishing touch, LG’s exclusive TrueSteam® helps to reduce the occurrence of water spots to leave every dish, glass and spoon sparkling clean.1

LG InstaView Combination Double Wall Oven

Adding a touch of class to the kitchen, the LG InstaView Combination Double Wall Oven features a clean, sophisticated design that incorporates LG’s exclusive ‘knock twice’ InstaView door – which lets users see how their dish is progressing without disturbing the cooking temperature. The new oven also comes with Steam Sous Vide, an innovative cooking mode that employs precision temperature control to help users create restaurant-quality meals at home. LG Presents ESG Vision for a Better Life for All at CES 2023

Company’s Promise for the Future and Innovations for the Planet and People
Will Be on Full Display in the ‘Better Life for All’ Zone

A face-on shot of the LG Better Life for All zone at CES 2023, consisting of three display sections: Our Commitment, For People, and For the Planet. (from left to right)

SEOUL, Dec. 19, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) will be putting the spotlight on its continuing commitment to sustainability at CES 2023, showcasing its ESG vision and latest, impactful innovations in an exclusive exhibit dubbed the Better Life for All zone.

Providing a comprehensive overview of LG’s sustainability efforts, including its major ESG milestones, current initiatives and long-term goals, the Better Life for All zone consists of three, unique sections: For the Planet, For People and Our Commitment. The exhibit will also introduce the four finalist entries of LG’s inaugural LIFE’S GOOD AWARD, an innovation challenge created to spread the company’s Life’s Good message and empower innovators seeking to make a positive difference for people and the planet.

Key focuses of LG’s ESG agenda have been built into every aspect of the Better Life for All zone. Informational materials provided in the zone will offer braille for those with visual impairments and be placed at a height that enables easy reading for people using wheelchairs. Guides proficient in sign language will be on site, as well as an LG CLOi GuideBot programmed to deliver digital-human sign language services. The zone itself will be constructed with the use of eco-friendly materials.

Better Life for All: Innovations for a Sustainable Future and the Better Life Plan 2030

The For the Planet section of the zone presents LG’s diverse environmental initiatives, which include the establishment of Sustainable Cycles which prioritize ‘green’ considerations at every step of the product lifecycle, such as the collection, disposal and re-purposing of e-waste in the post-usage stage. Visitors to For the Planet can see how materials extracted from discarded e-waste at the company’s Chilseo Recycling Center (CRC) are being used to manufacture parts for new LG products. Also highlighted in For the Planet is the LG Smart Park (Changwon, South Korea), the company’s energy-efficient factory and a new Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam recycling technology developed by LG to make product packaging more eco-friendly.

The second section of the exhibit, For People, showcases LG’s efforts and achievements in product and service accessibility. These include the development of product manuals incorporating voice and sign language guides and the implementation of accessibility features – such as voice recognition, voice instruction and motion-detecting sensors – in a wide range of LG products. For People will also give visitors the opportunity to explore the accessibility options available on LG TVs; from audio-to-text captions to a sign language screen that can be easily moved and resized.

Our Commitment, the third and final section of the Better Life for All zone, reflects LG’s dedication to ensuring a sustainable future – the ultimate goal of the company’s Better Life Plan 2030. LG aims to have cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from product manufacturing by 50 percent (compared to 2017 levels), and GHG emissions from the use of seven key products by 20 percent per unit sold by 2030 from a 2020 base year. Furthermore, the company plans to offer accessibility features for all of its product lines by 2025 and provide a voice instruction manual and sign language video manual for every LG product by 2030.

“At LG, we are constantly challenging ourselves to go the extra mile to make our vision for a Better Life for All a reality,” said Lee Jeong-seok, head of LG Electronics’ Global Marketing Center. “Our ESG-focused exhibit will give CES visitors insight into the values, determination and dedication that fuel our sustainability journey as well as the innovative technologies and practices we’re developing to ensure a brighter tomorrow.”

LG Delivers Year-Around Comfort and Elegance With New ARTCOOL Gallery at CES 2023

With a Stylish Design, Personalized Content and LG’s Renowned DUAL Inverter,
New Residential Air Conditioner Creates a Chic and Comfortable Living Environment

LG’s new ARTCOOL™ Gallery air conditioner installed on the wall above the sofa.

SEOUL, Dec. 16, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) is ready to unveil its latest ARTCOOL Gallery air conditioner at CES 2023. Boasting a 27-inch LCD screen and LG’s upgradable options, the new model can display personalized content to match any season or to instantly refresh the room using the LG ThinQ app. It also delivers energy-efficient cooling and heating with LG’s DUAL Inverter Compressor and 3-way indirect airflow, provides a more hygienic performance with AI Dry and offers a variety of user-friendly features including an intuitive mobile app.

Presenting exclusive content on a bright LCD screen bordered by a simple, yet sophisticated frame, the ARTCOOL Gallery gives one the impression they are looking at a framed work of art rather than an advanced LG air conditioner. Using the LG ThinQ app, users can select from a growing range of gorgeous, static and animated images – or choose from favorite family photos – and display something new whenever they feel like a change. The new model can be easily managed using the included smart remote or via a mobile app1 that lets users choose settings and functions as well as monitor the appliance’s status in real-time, from any location.

Equipped with the company’s DUAL Inverter Compressor, the new ARTCOOL Gallery delivers energy-efficient cooling, using up to 70 percent less power than a conventional residential air conditioner.2 The new model’s 3-way airflow provides indirect airflows suitable for the space. LG’s latest ARTCOOL Gallery also helps create an indoor environment that is as peaceful as it is comfortable, operating at noise levels as low as 20 decibels and closing its ‘hidden’ bottom vane in sleep mode so as not to disturb or disrupt users’ rest.3

What’s more, the stunning ARTCOOL Gallery provides pleasantly fresh airflow thanks to LG’s AI Dry feature. Automatically setting the optimal drying time based on operation time and mode selection, AI Dry effectively removes any moisture that has formed inside the air conditioner. Additionally, the new model has a bottom grill that can be easily detached and cleaned4 as well as a cover that helps make installation easier.

“Offering outstanding performance and artistic themes fit for all tastes and seasons, our latest ARTCOOL Gallery air conditioner delivers year-around comfort and elegance,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “With the unique combination of personalized content and cutting-edge technologies, LG’s innovative, new air solution is designed to help provide consumers with a better life at home.”

Visitors to LG’s booth (#15501, Las Vegas Convention Center) at CES 2023 from January 5-8 can see all of the company’s latest innovations, including the new ARTCOOL Gallery air conditioner.

LG to Present Spacious yet Sleek InstaView Refrigerator at CES 2023

New Counter-Depth French-Door Fridge Boasts Mirror InstaView™ Panel,
Large Capacity and Four Types of Ice

LG’s new InstaView™ French-Door refrigerator installed in the kitchen between the built-in drawers.

SEOUL, Dec. 15, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) is set to unveil the new LG InstaView™ French-Door refrigerator at CES 2023. Helping users create a more stylish kitchen that sits flush with the cabinetry and enjoy an upgraded culinary life, the new counter-depth model offers large capacity and a simple yet elegant built-in design featuring a mirror InstaView panel and unobtrusive pocket handles. It also provides four different types of ice and keeps food fresh for longer with LG’s advanced freshness technologies.

The company’s new, 25.5-cubic feet counter-depth refrigerator offers a generous capacity, despite a nine percent reduction in depth compared to a conventional French-Door model.1 To increase internal storage space, LG redesigned several of the fridge’s core components – slimming-down the cold air duct and the evaporator, while also reducing thickness by applying enhanced insulation. Although its expansive interior provides 25 percent more room for storing food and drinks than LG’s previous counter-depth models,2 the new French-Door can still help to save space in the kitchen thanks to its smaller footprint.

The new model also brings a simple yet sophisticated aesthetic to the kitchen courtesy of LG’s unique mirror-InstaView panel and flat door design. Bordered in sleek stainless steel, the mirror-coated glass of the seamless InstaView panel covers almost the entire right-hand door of the refrigerator. Just by knocking twice on the panel, users can check inside without having to open the door – a time-saving convenience that prevents cold air from escaping and energy from being wasted. The subtle, minimalist beauty and clean, modern lines of LG’s latest InstaView are further enhanced by the discrete pocket handles applied to the fridge’s ‘flat’ doors.

Additionally, the new French-Door refrigerator can create four different types of ice: cubed ice, crushed ice, LG’s exclusive, slow-melting round Craft Ice and the new mini cubed ice. Helping to keep drinks refreshingly cool, LG’s mini cubed ice makes a great addition to juices, sodas or cocktails. With four frozen choices at their disposal, users can select whichever style of ice best suits their need, their drink or the occasion.

Featuring LG’s cutting-edge technologies, the new fridge seals in the freshness of ingredients for longer and helps maintain the hygiene of the built-in water dispenser. The company’s exclusive LinearCooling™ technology reduces temperature fluctuations, enabling the fridge to preserve food at peak freshness for up to seven days.3 Meanwhile, DoorCooling+™ works faster than a conventional cooling system4 to help keep food fresher – and beverages colder – on every shelf. On top of that, LG’s UVnano™ tech maintains the cleanliness of the fridge’s water dispenser, reducing the presence of bacteria on the dispenser’s nozzle by 99.99 percent.5

“LG’s new InstaView French-Door refrigerator makes a superb, stylish addition to any modern kitchen, offering consumers the ultimate in convenience, design and food freshness,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We will continue to deliver outstanding customer value and experiences with innovative home solutions leveraging elegant, functional design and our advanced technologies.”

LG will be showcasing its latest home appliances, including the new InstaView French-Door refrigerator, at its exhibition booth (#15501, Las Vegas Convention Center) at CES 2023 in Las Vegas from January 5-8.

2 Based on an internal study utilizing average cans to quantify available storage space, conducted in March 2022, comparing LG models LRFVC2406S and LRFOC2606S.
3 LinearCooling sends cool air throughout the refrigerator compartment more frequently than a conventional cooling system, helping maintain a smaller temperature fluctuation range of ±0.5 degrees Celsius. Based on TÜV Rheinland test results using LG’s internal test method, measuring the time it took to achieve a 5 percent weight loss rate for pak choi on the shelf in the fresh produce compartment of the LG LinearCooling model GSXV91NSAE. Results may vary depending on the actual usage environment.
4 Tested by TÜV Rheinland using LG’s internal testing method, comparing the time of the temperature of the water container placed in the top basket to drop between DoorCooling+ and non-DoorCooling+ models.
5 Tested by TÜV Rheinland using LG’s internal testing method, measuring the reduction of a bacteria solution (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) in distilled water samples after exposure to the product’s UV LED for 10 minutes each hour, after a total of 24 hours in normal household use. Results may vary depending on the actual usage environment.

LG Tops in Latest Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for Eleventh Consecutive Year

Company Named in Globally Respected Corporate
Sustainability Index for Its Strong Commitment to ESG Management

DJSI Member Emblem

SEOUL, Dec. 13, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) has earned a place in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the eleventh consecutive year, illustrating the company’s ongoing leadership in responsible ESG management.

The DJSI World lists only the top 10 percent of over 2,500 global companies in terms of corporate sustainability, evaluating each organization based on in-depth analyses of their environmental, social and governance practices. Updated annually, the DJSI World is widely viewed by investors, governments and other key stakeholders around the globe, as a reliable indicator of corporates’ ESG commitment.

LG scored well in all three areas of ESG management in this year’s Index. Receiving high marks for its various environmentally-focused initiatives, the company is actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions and water usage while also increasing recycling rates, converting to renewable energy sources and making steady progress toward its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. LG reduced the total amount of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from its domestic and overseas sites by 40 percent last year (compared to 2017 levels).

In terms of the social criteria measured, LG garnered a favorable assessment from the DJSI World for its strong efforts in supply chain management, workplace diversity and for the creation of an inclusive culture. The company also earned a positive evaluation for implementing transparent and responsible governance practices, including the disclosure of its Board Skills Matrix (BSM), establishment of the board guidelines on independence, expertise and diversity.

Dedicated to realizing a more inclusive society through providing products that are truly accessible, in Korea, LG recently introduced cost-free braille stickers to enable people with visual impairments to more conveniently operate appliances. The company has also shown its commitment to meeting the highest global standards with the acquisition of ISO37301 certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI). Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO37301 is an internationally-recognized standard for assessing whether a company’s compliance management policies and risk management systems conform to global standards.

In addition to being listed in the DJSI World for 11 years in a row, LG has made the DJSI Asia Pacific Index for 13 consecutive years, and the DJSI Korea Index for 14 consecutive years. Assessing the same criteria as the DJSI World, the Asia Pacific Index includes the top 20 percent of the top 600 companies in the Asia-Pacific region, while the DJSI Korea Index recognizes the top 30 percent of the top 200 companies based in South Korea.

Furthermore, LG has been awarded Platinum status for the second straight year by independent, globally-trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, EcoVadis – putting LG in the top one percent of all companies in terms of sustainability initiatives. And for the last two years, LG has been given an ‘A’ grade by global investment research firm, Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI).

LG’s ESG management practices and goals, including the mid- to long-term strategic tasks the company established earlier this year, are clearly laid out in its Better Life Plan 2030. The plan embodies LG’s commitment to realizing a more inclusive and diverse society by embracing differences and forming close-knit circles of alliance with company employees, corporate partners and stakeholders.

“We will continue to do everything we can to realize our vision for a more sustainable future, leveraging our experience, innovative technologies and global presence to help make life better for all,” said Hong Sung-min, head of LG’s ESG department.

This initiative was the perfect opportunity to build on LG’s philosophy of open innovation, as it brought together over 334 creative minds from 61 countries around the globe to share their potentially world-changing ideas. With entrants competing against a one-in-a-hundred chance, this challenge showed just how many brilliant minds resonate with LG’s vision for a sustainable world, no matter where they hail from.

The successful culmination of the LIFE’S GOOD AWARD applications shines a bright light on the new direction LG is headed to adopt more sustainable business practices. The company is now turning its attention to widening the platform of opportunities and resources to invite people from all backgrounds to join its virtuous cycle of positive impact.

Adding even more expertise and fairness to the award is B Lab Korea, a non-profit with ample know-how in measuring and certifying a business’s social impact, which in partnership with LG has been tasked with evaluating applications based on their impact, innovation and feasibility – LG’s own criteria for innovations for a better life.

For the fairest, most knowledgeable evaluation process, LG enlisted the help of respected academics across various industries to join its executives on the judging panel, dubbed the Life’s Good Committee. This diverse talent pool of budding innovators, entrepreneurs, business professionals and renowned scholars perfectly demonstrates how society can come together as one to pave a better future for the people and their planet.

[On the Job] Building an Inclusive Organization that Creates a Better Life for All

In this installment of On the Job, we go inside LG’s ESG department and take a look at how they’re promoting excellence in ESG.

In recent years, companies like LG have been incorporating environment, social and governance (ESG) factors into their business strategies and operations since an awareness of the need for ESG in business has become much bigger. As a responsible corporate citizen itself, LG recognizes the importance of applying ESG practices to its day-to-day operations if it wants to achieve its ambitious goals.

Illustration of ESG department employees working together on a project

With this in mind, the company enlarged its ESG department early this year to carry out its mid-to-long-term ESG vision and strategic tasks. The extended department is responsible for leading the ESG Committee which meets twice a year to deliberate and decide on the company’s overall ESG management activities in detail.

A special video capturing LG's green initiatives will debut on the Times Square billboard in New York City on Earth Day, April 22. To learn more about LG Electronics' ENERGY STAR-certified products and green initiatives, please visit www.LG.com.

To inspire greater transparency when it comes to ESG communications, LG’s ESG department publishes an annual sustainability report to clearly outline the company’s achievements, goals and plans to its external stakeholders. This year, LG thought its 2022 edition would be the perfect opportunity to unveil its sustainable vision of a Better Life for All, under which the company is expanding the scope of its sustainable practices to create a better life for not only its customers, but for its employees, suppliers and the environment as well.

To carry out this vision, the company launched The Better Life Plan 2030 which shines a bright light on the company’s six commitments by facilitating carbon neutrality, circular economies, eco-conscious products, sustainable supply chains, an inclusive organizational culture and accessible products and services.

One aspect the department is focused in on this year is ensuring all LG employees are on the same page when it comes to the company’s overarching efforts and goals. “In order to strengthen ESG management, all employees and stakeholders should have a high level of understanding of ESG,” said Hong Sung-min, head of LG’s ESG Department.

To get the job done in the timeliest manner, the department institutionalized a mandatory training program for all LG employees. This 30-minute online learning video session introduces the meaning and importance of ESG, LG’s mid-to-long-term plan and the six commitments we have committed to as one. The session was first rolled out to Korean employees on mid-November and was then expanded to employees working at its global offices two weeks later.

The learning session has already received an overwhelming response from LG employees in Korea. “One employee stated that the video lecture explained the company’s ESG vision and commitments clearly so that everyone could understand, and that it was a great opportunity to think about how it applies to his work,” remarked Kim Eun-gyeong, an associate of the ESG department.

To build an inclusive organizational culture, LG is making a conscious effort to carry out ESG activities with employees, with the ESG department actively collecting and applying ideas and feedback from employees. As a result, earlier this year, the company challenged its employees to come together in the collective journey towards circularity by using reusable cups at its headquarters buildling, LG Twin Towers, in Korea. By eliminating the use of paper cups in the office, the company expects to reduce 11 tons of greenhouse gases every year. The company even installed easy-to-use tumbler washers as well as ice makers in office lounges to make the transition easier.

The company also has an ESG Council, overseen by the CFO, that is held quarterly to discuss the direction of ESG management activities as well as the progress and improvement of specific tasks. Made up by decision makers from across various departments, including strategy, planning, energy, human resources, purchasing, R&D and marketing, the council discusses tasks necessary to achieve the company’s ESG goals, such as the use of renewable energy, measures to respond to greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain, the establishment of diversity and inclusion policies as well as improvement of governance structure.

To go above and beyond, LG aims to strengthen its ESG management next year by expanding the number of eco-friendly elements utilized throughout the entire life cycle of household appliances, ranging from production and use to recovery and recycling. The ESG department has even recently set up ‘Eco-Friendly Supply Chain’ and ‘Eco-Friendly Packaging Strategy’ task teams to promote a leading circular economy.

Going forward, LG’s forward-thinking ESG department hopes to emphasize the authenticity of its ESG practices by establishing specific plans that help implement its commitments and realize its ESG vision, based on external environmental analysis and internal business analysis while ensuring to disclose all related information to its various stakeholders for a level of transparency it can be proud of.

LG Presents Wise Heating for a Warm, Energy-Efficient Winter

A warm, comfortable home is essential for enduring the harsh, Northern hemisphere winter. But cranking up the heat during the coldest months of the year does come at a cost, harming the planet by increasing carbon emissions and hitting home owners with some hefty energy bills. That’s why heating solutions such as LG’s air-to-water heat pumps are a wise choice; delivering next-level efficiency and a more eco-conscious performance to keep you cozy indoors when it’s too frigid to go out.

Here’s how installing a heat pump at home can help you enjoy a warm, energy-efficient winter.

The Perfect Energy-Saving Heater for Your Home

Offering numerous advantages over conventional heating solutions, heat pump systems can meet all of your space and floor heating needs and ensure a reliable supply of hot water, all winter long. A properly installed heat pump with a capacity suitable for the size or your space can consistently maintain the set temperature while generating fewer carbon emissions compared to an oil or gas boiler. What’s more, according to the German Heat Pump Association, heat pumps designed to operate using renewable energy sources can even help households to achieve carbon neutrality.

LG offers benefits for different types of buildings with both split and monobloc heat pump solutions,1 such as those in the highly efficient LG Therma V R32 series. Boasting an A+++ energy rating in space heating with a Leaving Water Temperature (LWT) of 35 degrees Celsius,2 LG Therma V can provide year-around hot water supply as well as heating and cooling for the whole house. Even when the temperature dips down to negative 7 degrees Celsius outside, it still delivers powerful heating at an impressive 100 percent of capacity.3

LG Therma V also features Seasonal Auto Mode – which enables it to automatically adjust performance in accordance with the temperature outdoors – and can heat water to a piping-hot temperature of 80 degrees Celsius.4 By installing an efficient heating system, you can make your home a warm, comfy oasis without consuming large amounts of electricity, thereby cutting energy costs and shrinking your energy footprint at the same time.

All LG Therma V solutions come with a remote control, while several models feature an integrated control panel where you can easily view a range of operational information – such as current mode and indoor temperature – and change settings as needed. The company’s solutions can also be remotely controlled from the LG ThinQ app, so you can have the perfect temperature awaiting you after a hard day at the office or make sure the heating is set to low when you’re away on vacation.

Enjoy a warmer winter at home this year, and every year, with a convenient, efficient heating system that’s better for the planet and for your wallet.

[Mobility Inside] Connecting Cars to the Internet via Telematics

Image depicting the infotainment installed on a vehicle

Communications technology works in devices like smartphones to offer us increased convenience, keeping us connected with friends and family and providing an endless source of entertainment.

This technology can also be applied to mobility. Like a smartphone, a vehicle is equipped with communications technology that connects it to the internet, enabling passengers to do more on the move through automotive displays that show key information including directions, driving information, nearby restaurants and the news.

The technology that connects cars to the internet is known as telematics.

Ilustration with the title

A portmanteau of ‘telecommunications’ and ‘informatics’, telematics refers to the use of on-board communications-enabled devices to store, send and receive information. A car collects data from various sources, including mobile networks, Global Positioning System (GPS), Location-based Services (LBS) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which is then analyzed through telematics to provide the driver with all the info available.

So, why is telematics so important?

Core technology for autonomous cars

Image of a vehicle on the road

Autonomous cars must be able to operate without human intervention. With analysts predicting autonomous vehicles to generate as much as 40 terabytes of data every hour,* almost instantaneous communication is essential for self-driving cars to exist in a world that puts safety above everything.

Image of many cars on the road located in the city full of buildings

Autonomous cars need to be able to detect all kinds of information using several cameras installed onboard, including data on local traffic, traffic signals, other vehicles and in-cabin conditions. The information is then transmitted to the cloud where it’s analyzed to achieve fully automated driving, a process which is faster and more accurate thanks to telematics.

Real-time updates for cars

Over-the-air (OTA) automatically updates a car’s software via wireless communications, reducing the need for service center visits for repairs or replacements and meaning new services that weren’t available at purchase can be added later.

With the modern car constantly evolving, communication with servers containing upgrade data must be seamless so that cars can automatically check for and apply updates and menus as soon as they become available. Telematics ensures this fast and accurate communication without error.

Connect via the internet

A Bird's-eye view of a city overlapped with various icons

With most of today’s devices having access to the internet, we’ve already experienced how internet connectivity enhances convenience in many ways. In fact, we have come to trust and rely on communications to a point where we almost can’t live without it.

The same applies to the automotive industry, which is why Wi-Fi-enabled cars are on the rise. From receiving traffic guidance and requesting assistance during emergencies, to tracking the locations of stolen vehicles and sending high-resolution videos, telematics brings various features together to make the driving experience safer, easier and more enjoyable.

As we enter the 5G era, a more diverse and differentiated in-vehicle experience is on its way. However, reliable telematics will be key to ensuring a stable 5G connection as well as the outstanding quality of services like autonomous driving, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) systems and connected cars.

To prepare for what’s to come, LG Electronics’ Vehicle component Solution (VS) Company has been focused in on the R&D of its telematics for several years. For example, LG partnered with GM in 2015 to develop the Chevrolet Bolt EV’s telematics system, collaborated with Intel in 2016 to develop and pilot 5G telematics technology and teamed up with Qualcomm in 2017 to jointly develop next-generation connected car solutions.

To carry this momentum on, LG will continue to work with global partners to develop the telematics systems offering the most enhanced convenience and safety to millions of drivers the world over.
