CASACOR, which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2022, is the largest integrated exhibition of architecture, interior design and landscaping in Latin America. Held in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, between July and September last year, the wide-ranging event featured more than 60 architect- and designer-led projects and attracted more than 115,000 in-person visitors.

Called LG Magenta House and designed by architect Otto Felix, the 415 square-meter exhibition space was transformed into a stunning indoor environment complete with gorgeous, understated furnishings and LG’s premium lifestyle solutions. Among these were the LG G2 Gallery Series OLED TV, OLED Objet Collection Posé, side-by-side refrigerator, Styler, WashTower™, PuriCare 360° Air Purifier and ARTCOOL™ Gallery air conditioner. The company’s state-of-the-art appliances blended in perfectly with the curated selection of vintage furniture pieces and interior objects to create a space of effortless comfort, convenience and aesthetic beauty.

The layout of LG Magenta House was centered around a central island that divided the space into a living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and clothing area. The façade of the project featured walls made entirely of transparent glass bricks, a distinctly modernist touch that lets in natural light and warmth while still maintaining the privacy of those inside.

Drawing inspiration from the Conjunto Nacional – which was completed in the 1950s and has the distinction of being one of São Paulo’s first modern multi-use buildings – the LG Magenta House was awarded the VEJA SP Award for Best CASACOR Environment in the category of “Best Suite.” LG Magenta House was also recognized with the “Best of 2022” award from Archello, a global platform that connects professionals such as architects, sculptors, painters and engineers.

[On the Job] LG SIC Center: Making Smart Home Appliances Smarter

In this installment of On the Job, we go inside LG’s System Integrated Circuit (SIC) Center to learn how LG is leveraging the latest AI to help deliver new customer experiences.

Side view of LG MoodUP InstaView™ refrigerator installed in the dining room

Imagine if there was a refrigerator that could play music and change color to match your current mood or spice up your kitchen décor. Well, as it happens, such a fridge actually exists – the newly introduced refrigerator with MoodUP™ from LG. The unique capabilities and customer experiences offered by LG’s latest kitchen innovation owe much to the LG8111, an on-device AI system-on-chip (SoC) developed by LG’s SIC Center.

Even before it was known as LG Electronics, the company began producing chips for consumer electronics as far back as 1992, at the ASIC Center under Goldstar’s Central Research Institute. Now, LG’s SIC Center is responsible for developing all of the AI chips used in LG products. These technologies have evolved over time to become the AI-based integrated circuits now used in cutting-edge appliances and home entertainment solutions such as LG OLED TV, and now, the fridge with MoodUP™.

(From left to right) Chang Woon-suk, lead of Smart Solution TP, LG SIC Center, and Lee Jin-jong, LG SIC Center professional(From left to right) Chang Woon-suk, lead of Smart Solution TP, LG SIC Center, and Lee Jin-jong, LG SIC Center professional

Greatly expanding the customer experience, the company’s latest AI chips can process innumerable data points and enable LG appliances to communicate with one another – and with other smart devices as well. LG8111, the new AI chip used in the MoodUP™, features an acceleration engine that processes information gathered from the refrigerator’s built-in cameras, microphones and sensors in real time. This allows the MoodUP™ to quickly recognize changes in its immediate environment and adjust performance accordingly, facilitate more convenient interactions with users and accurately assess if all of its features are functioning optimally.

The LG8111, a highly integrated AI chip that is equipped with an LG-specific AI processor

Recognizing the importance that AI will play in consumer electronics and wanting to find a solution to differentiate LG products, engineers at the LG SIC Center began to develop the LG8111 in 2017 and created the first prototype in 2018. The LG8111, a highly integrated AI chip that is equipped with an LG-specific AI processor, is perfectly designed for LG products. While the chip performs and functions better online, its AI functions can also be utilized offline as well.

Impressively, the LG8111 can provide three types of AI: vision intelligence (the ability to recognize and distinguish between different spaces, locations, objects and users), voice intelligence (the ability to recognize users’ voices or specific noises associated with a certain type of space) and control intelligence (the ability to adjust and optimize performance according to physical or chemical changes in the environment). Also, when connected to Wi-Fi, any product equipped with the LG8111 can transmit information to nearby devices or to cloud servers.

A set of LG MoodUP InstaView™ refrigerators in different colors

“We spent a considerable amount of time deciding which device would be the first to apply our new on-device AI chip,” said Chang Woon-suk, lead of Smart Solution TP, LG SIC Center.

Various appliances were in contention, but ultimately, the SIC team decided to go with a refrigerator, a choice made because the household fridge has the distinction of being the only home appliance to operate 24/7. The first recipient of the state-of-the-art chip, the color-changing LG refrigerator with MoodUP™ boasts a seamless voice recognition feature that allows for convenient, remote control and monitoring via the LG ThinQ app.

A woman holding a bag of groceries is standing next to LG MoodUP InstaView™ refrigerator

“All of our top-notch researchers at the LG SIC Center are dedicated to developing chip solutions based on the core goal of maximizing customer value,” said Chang. “While we’re pleased with the success of the LG8111, we will continue to push the envelope as a team to take the customer experience to the next level.”

The successful implementation of the LG8111 in the new LG refrigerator with MoodUP™ opens the way for the chip’s use in a wide range of LG solutions, from other smart home appliances to electric vehicle components.

Stay tuned to Beyond News to learn more about the innovative technologies LG is using to drive the customer experience forward.

Delivering Hope to Flood-Stricken Communities of Thailand

A group of volunteers from LG Thailand posing together for a photo

Last year was a particularly harsh one for many families in Thailand, as severe floods devastated large areas of the northeast and central regions repeatedly over a prolonged four-month period. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, a central Thailand province steeped in ancient history, was one territory that was hit particularly hard by this unprecedented catastrophe.

To restore and preserve the city’s infrastructure, historical locations and private homes damaged by this unforgiving natural disaster, LG Thailand initiated a range of activities that took full advantage of the company’s expertise and kind-hearted employees as it extended a helping hand to those in need.

A group of volunteers from LG Thailand clearing smudges resulted from the devastating flood

LG recruited a team of over 30 volunteers who worked diligently throughout the day to clear up as many of the smudges created by the flooding as possible and repaint buildings from schools to temples, returning their old, dilapidated walls to their former glory.

LG technician providing an inspection and maintenance service to flood-damaged appliances

Fully understanding that flood-damaged electrical appliances, which are considered daily essentials, must be repaired as a matter of urgency within the affected communities, LG created a registration system where households could sign up to receive inspections and maintenance services as fast as possible. Thanks to this effort, people could bring their devices to a service center or request LG technicians pay a visit to their houses for repairs.

The company’s endeavor to care for locals continues to change lives with a donation of LG appliances and cash totaling over USD 10,600. “Through this and other activities, LG has joined hands with the local government to help accelerate the restoration of the province and improve the well-being of our inhabitants,” said Prapan Treebubpha, deputy governor of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.

The flood relief project is yet another embodiment of LG’s long-held commitment to improving the overall quality of life and well-being of people across the world, as it strives to promote its Life’s Good vision. In July 2022, LG also donated electrical appliances worth over USD 11,500 to the Chulalongkorn Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society and Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer (PMMV) Foundation to support the heroes working in Thailand’s medical sector, believing that this donation would benefit the healthcare and livelihoods of all Thai people in time.

LG Announces 2022 Financial Results

Highest Full-Year Revenue in LG Electronics’ History With
Continuous Growth Based on Strong Fundamentals

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Jan. 27, 2023 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced full-year 2022 consolidated revenue of KRW 83.5 trillion with operating profit of KRW 3.6 trillion.

In 2022, LG achieved its highest annual revenue ever – surpassing KRW 80 trillion for the first time in its history – increasing 12.9 percent over 2021, when sales exceeded KRW 70 trillion for the first time. The record sales reflect continuous growth based on strong fundamentals, although full-year profitability was impacted by challenging global economic conditions.

The company’s revenue growth in 2022 was driven by strong demand for premium home appliances and automotive parts. For the seventh consecutive year, the appliance business unit saw significant year-over-year growth. The turnaround of LG’s Vehicle components Solutions business in 2022 reflected steady improvements in the automotive industry, and this business exceeded 10 percent of LG’s total revenue for the first time.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company saw another record-setting year with 2022 revenue of KRW 29.9 trillion, an increase of 10.3 percent from the previous year, as a result of company’s premium-focused strategy that includes unique appliances such as LG Stylerclothing care systems, all-in-one WashTower laundry centers, and LG InstaView refrigerators with Craft Ice. Full-year 2022 operating profit was KRW 1.1 trillion lower than in the previous year caused by increased marketing investments and higher logistics costs. The business unit plans to consistently pursue its premium-centered strategy by improving competitiveness of premium products as well as strengthening its mass-tier lineup, along with cost structure management to enhance profitability. In addition, the company will accelerate the expansion of smart home ecosystems by expanding upgradable appliance lineups in the overseas markets.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported 2022 revenue of KRW 15.7 trillion and operating profit of KRW 5.4 billion. Although lower global TV demand impacted revenue and operating profit versus 2021, the company’s content and services business based on LG’s smart TV platform has grown ten-fold since 2018. As challenging business conditions persist, the company will focus on expanding LG’s smart TV platform to diversify its overall business portfolio and secure future growth engines. Furthermore, the company will maintain its competitive edge by growing the premium TV segment, such as OLED TV and QNED TV, as well as effectively managing marketing expenses.

The LG Vehicle component Solutions Company increased revenue by 29.1 percent in 2022 from 2021 to KRW 8.6 trillion with a full-year operating profit of KRW 169.6 billion. The business unit’s profitable growth was driven by proactively responding to higher demand from automakers. By year-end 2022, the total value of accumulated orders for auto parts is around KRW 80 trillion, reflecting the company’s position as a leading supplier to the worldwide automotive industry. The company will continue its momentum by strengthening its global supply chain and will work to further increase profitability through efficient cost structure management.

The LG Business Solutions Company’s 2022 revenue of KRW 6.1 trillion increased 11.2 percent over the previous year driven by continuous recovery of information displays. Full-year operating profit declined, primarily due to lower post-pandemic demand for PCs and monitors. Looking ahead, the company plans to improve competitiveness of PCs and monitors, while driving stable growth in the B2B segment by developing more customized solutions.

Featuring a compact, space-saving design with a foldable mount, LG Smart Cam Pro can be placed on or near a TV or display. The device has a subtle, dark silver casing and a gloss-black front featuring a manual privacy cover that can be moved over the main lens at the user’s discretion. LG ThinQ UP’s Personalized Upgrades Receive UL Verification

Reliability of Software Upgrade Process for LG ThinQ UP Appliances Verified by
Respected Global Safety Science Company

LG’s software update process of its ThinQ UP 27-inch washer, dryer and InstaView fridge received Software Update Process Verification from UL Solutions

SEOUL, Jan. 20, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) announces that the software update process for its ThinQ™ UP home appliances recently received Software Update Process Verification from UL Solutions. LG’s first certification relating to software updates, the new verification confirms the reliability of feature update processing for products including LG’s ThinQ UP 27-inch washer, dryer and fridge and comes after the company’s Artificial Intelligence Direct Drive (AI DD™) earned UL’s Algorithm Reproducibility Verification. Set to roll out globally this year after launching in South Korea in 2022, LG’s ThinQ UP products can be continuously upgraded with downloadable features via the LG ThinQ app.

LG ThinQ UP appliances can evolve to meet users’ everchanging needs thanks to their ability to add new features created by LG based on the analysis of users’ lifestyles and usage patterns. The easy-to-install software updates are available from the LG ThinQ app, which even provides tailored feature recommendations based on personal usage history and preferences. LG’s ThinQ UP personalized appliances concept means consumers can enjoy the very latest features without having to constantly ‘update’ to a brand-new appliance.

Users can select which ThinQ UP features they want to install according to their own unique needs and circumstances. Washer users with pets in the home may want to download the Pet Care Course, which has been customized to effectively remove pet-related stains and smells from clothing. A great option for those times when it is impossible to unload the washer as soon as the cycle has finished, Laundry Saver keeps the drum tumbling to prevent clothes from getting wrinkled. It can even do an additional rinse or spin post-cycle if needed. ThinQ UP refrigerator users can add Improved Nighttime Brightness Control, which adjusts the fridge’s lighting at night to a softer, gentler glow that won’t hurt their eyes.

For LG, 2022 was a defining year for its unwavering journey towards sustainability after the company successfully redirected its focus to collaborations for a greater collective impact through its global innovation challenge, the LIFE’S GOOD AWARD.

Innovators hailing from all four corners of the globe answered LG’s call with creativity, passion and a drive to make sure Life’s Good, with novel solutions that bring much-needed hope of a brighter future for people and the planet. Among the countless game-changing ideas submitted, the best four were selected to be presented at the LIFE’S GOOD AWARD Conference held in January, in what would be the grand finale.

LG Home Appliance Factory in United States Latest to Receive Prestigious ‘Lighthouse’ Status

LG Electronics Tennessee Plant is Selected as Industry’s First U.S.
Home Appliance Lighthouse Factory by World Economic Forum

SEOUL, Jan. 16, 2023 — LG Electronics’ (LG) home appliance manufacturing plant in the United States has been selected as a world-leading Lighthouse Factory by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The million-square-foot factory in Clarksville, Tennessee – the U.S. production base for LG’s award-winning washers and dryers – is the industry’s first home appliance plant in the United States to join the WEF’s global network. Also, it is the company’s second Lighthouse Factory, following on the heels of the LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea, which was selected by the WEF last year.

A “Lighthouse Factory” is recognized by the WEF for its role in shaping the future of manufacturing through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT), big data, artificial intelligence (AI), robots and other Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. Since 2018, the WEF has selected and added global factories to its network twice a year.

LG’s world-class autonomous factory in Tennessee utilizes advanced digital technologies from AI and big data to IoT and robots. Completed at the end of 2018, the facility now operates three production lines for front-load and top-load washing machines and dryers. With an annual production capacity of 1.2 million washers and 600,000 dryers, the plant proactively responds to changing North American demand through local production. More than 900 people work at the LG home appliance factory in Montgomery County, Tenn.

Featuring a complete integrated production system streamlined process to supply impeccable products to customers on time, each line carries out the entire manufacturing process of new models from making the parts to assembly and packaging. In addition, strict quality conditions are applied to all the assembly lines to heighten quality across the board, from parts to finished products.

The LG Tennessee factory boasts a fully autonomous logistics system with 166 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that transport parts around the plant. With three times more AGVs than the LG Smart Park, these robots improve overall productivity by freeing up people for other tasks.

With the integration of parts production such as metal press processing, plastic injection molding, and painting – including LG’s own intelligent injection molding system – the company has increased component productivity by 21 percent.1 In addition, the plant recognizes and responds in advance to potential productivity issues through an advanced detection system. By applying data-based AI technology that accurately predicts washing machine performance, the number of tests and energy consumed during testing are reduced by 22 percent, while the defect rate has been reduced by more than 61 percent via quality optimization.2

The plant is also maximizing workplace safety and operational efficiency by using robots for complicated, potentially dangerous tasks, such as assembling and lifting heavy parts and welding.

To further improve efficiency, LG plans to establish a 5G connectivity network across the facility in the second half of this year, creating an environment where its many AGVs can transport materials faster and more accurately based on stable, uninterrupted communication. LG will also introduce Autonomous Mobile Robots that navigate the expansive facility with ease to enhance its logistics system.

LG’s commitment to sustainability can be seen throughout the Tennessee factory, which transitioned to renewable energy completely already in 2022. The plant also uses a high-efficiency utility infrastructure, which supplies the power, steam and heat necessary to produce LG’s home appliance products with the help of the company’s advanced Building Energy Control (BECON) solution.

“Along with the LG Smart Park, LG’s Tennessee factory represents our unmatched leadership in transforming manufacturing facilities into advanced, futuristic hubs utilizing the most revolutionary technologies,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of the LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “Lighthouse Factory status exemplifies how LG continues to strive for providing differentiated customer experiences through customized manufacturing innovations.”
