LG Meets Latest Global Standard for Vehicle Cybersecurity

 Company’s Innovations Comply With ISO/SAE 21434
Cybersecurity Standard for Vehicles

An LG executive receives the complying verification from TÜV Rheinland.

SEOUL, Feb. 20, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) has announced that its vehicle components have been verified for complying with ISO/SAE 21434, fundamental for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) regulation No. 155 (UN R155). This standard automotive cybersecurity measure requires vehicle and vehicle parts manufacturers to employ certified cybersecurity management systems for protection against hackers and other cybersecurity threats. Meeting the highest standards for digital security, LG’s automotive cybersecurity management system has earned the ISO/SAE 21434 certification from leading global testing organization TÜV Rheinland.

UNECE vehicle cybersecurity regulations, including UN R155, were established to make current and future car models safer against the ever-increasing risk of cyberattack. With vehicles now collecting, accessing and storing a large volume of data, cybersecurity has become a major focus for the automotive sector. In EU countries, auto manufacturers must adopt Cybersecurity Management Systems (CSMS) and get Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) in order to offer their products. In regions outside of the EU, such as North America and Asia, similar types of rules and regulations have come into force.

In this environment, CSMS system verification plays an instrumental role in the competitiveness of automotive parts. LG’s key products, including in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems and telematics, meet the stringent cybersecurity requirements set out in ISO/SAE 21434 according to the UN R155. This means the company is able to supply its auto industry partners with highly secure and reliable mobility solutions that meet or exceed the latest standards. Based on its considerable experience in developing and operating cybersecurity processes, LG can respond quickly to new standards, giving the company a distinct advantage over other industry players.

LG is utilizing its certified CSMS to develop confidence in vulnerable vehicle components and solutions for automakers. Moving forward, the company will also be working closely with its customers to test the cybersecurity of vehicles employing LG solutions, helping to ensure they are protected against cybersecurity threats throughout their operational life.

In September 2021, LG enhanced its capabilities in this highly important area of future mobility by acquiring Israeli cybersecurity company, Cybellum. LG’s commitment to and investment in cybersecurity have seen the company achieve meaningful results, including the recent verification from the UNECE.

“We sincerely congratulate LG on obtaining cybersecurity management system certification according to ISO/SAE 21434,” said Frank Juettner, CEO and director of TÜV Rheinland Korea. “Over the past decade, the automotive industry has transformed to meet the demand for advanced vehicles. Strengthening protection against automotive cybersecurity threats ultimately benefits both users and suppliers and this certification can be seen as a preemptive response by LG to prepare for security in the future automotive market.”

“In the era of software-defined vehicles, the ability to deliver reliable cybersecurity will play an ever-greater role in the automotive industry,” said Eun Seok-hyun, president of LG Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company. “Gaining certification for ISO/SAE 21434 compliance shows that we can adapt and respond quickly to new regulations designed to protect vehicles and their occupants from cyberattacks.”

Navigating Circular Economies at Waste Summit

While others see e-waste and discarded packaging as mere rubbish, LG Portugal, ERP Portugal and Novo Verde see an opportunity to promote circular economies through the reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery of materials and energy.

A multinational tech company with a leading sustainability initiative, the Portuguese chapter of European Recycling Platform (ERP) and a pioneering waste management company, the three forward-thinking entities came together in January to host Waste Summit  – Economy, Consumption and Sustainability in Lisbon, Portugal. The meaningful event aimed to inspire greater discussions on the urgency of responsible waste disposal as well as growing issues related to consumption, the economy and sustainability.

Giving electronic equipment, end-of-life batteries and their packaging a second chance at life and adopting sustainable behavior from production to disposal are increasingly relevant in today’s society – considering the number of products we use every day. Research finds, however, that there’s much room for improvement.

President of ERP Portugal and Novo Verde, Ricardo Neto, having a conversation with two men at the Waste Summit.Ricardo Neto, president of ERP Portugal and Novo Verde

According to the study, Habits of the Portuguese in Relation to Electronic Waste* (co-authored by LG Portugal, ERP Portugal, QData and NOVA IMS), 59.2 percent of Portuguese people keep equipment they no longer use as they still work and may come in handy later. But the truth is that old equipment tends to end up in drawers, cupboards, the garage or storage room to gather dust, the same fate as old packaging for our large devices.

According to ERP Portugal’s data, in 2021 alone, over 232 thousand tons of electric and electronic equipment were placed on the market in Portugal and more than 30 percent of the population still does not forward or recycle their e-waste. Not only highly harmful to the planet, electronic waste also poses a major health risk when not properly disposed of as it can contain toxic additives or hazardous substances such as mercury, which can cause damage to the human brain.

Meanwhile, around 806,153 tons of packaging for fast-moving consumer products were placed on the national market in 2021, equivalent to 76 kilograms per capita. According to Novo Verde, the growing trend of packaging consumption has been accompanied by a growing amount of collected packaging, having increased 7 percent annually on average since 2017.

People making their way to the Waste Summit.

Waste Summit, which gathered more than a hundred people from industry sectors, distribution partners and academia, was another perfect opportunity for LG Portugal, ERP Portugal and Novo Verde to become agents of change and promote sustainable behavior for better circular economies.

The highlight of the event was a performance by César Mourão, a beloved Portuguese comedian who used his talent for improvisational comedy and music to create a light, fun and educating discussion on the imperativeness of managing e-waste and packaging.

Mourão’s unique, humorous approach to addressing one of the most pressing issues of our times was also featured in the digital campaign, Destralhar, which was co-produced by LG Portugal and ERP. The entertaining yet thought-provoking film covers the lifestyles of Portuguese families and workers all over the city and explores how these lifestyles can be improved for the better good of the planet.

When we think about living fully in our homes and enjoying every part of them, so much of that has to do with convenience.”

[Mobility Inside] How Infotainment Brightens Up Your Driving Experience

The latest trends in mobility focus on the unique driving experiences the latest cars can provide. This comes down to consumers valuing the journey more as an important part of their daily lifestyle. In 2022, building a vehicle that provides comfort and new driving experiences contributes to its competitiveness in the market. One such technology that provides new experiences is the in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system.

Various onboard software installed in IVI System

In-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system combines the words ‘information’ (navigation, speedometer, etc.) and ‘entertainment’ (movies, music, games and social media). The best IVI systems introduce fun and interesting ways to enhance the driving experience that go way beyond notifications.

Considering that the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) are primary contact points between the product and customer, their ease of use, speed and intuitiveness are more important than ever. With this in mind, LG Electronics is developing infotainment technology that brings new value to drivers and passengers.

Since then, LG has been constantly improving its IVI systems which, in partnership with JLR, are the most intuitive and seamless to date. To get a better idea of just how exceptional they are, let’s discuss the five main benefits of the LG IVI system featured in the iconic Land Rover Defender.

An illustration explaining five advantages of LG Electronics' automotive infotainment system which include multi-device connection, unique screen per user, easy control, safety and security as well as customizable cluster screen

Multi-device connection

Unlike AVNs (Audio, Video, Navigation), which only support a single connection, LG’s infotainment technology supports two connections at once so passengers can connect their smartphone using a hotspot to perform two separate actions on the vehicle’s AVN screen and smartphone screen simultaneously.

A driver using LG’s infotainment technology of supporting two connections at once and providing two separate screens on the vehicle’s AVN screen and smartphone screen simultaneously

After connecting a device to the Defender’s AVN, passengers can stream music from their device via the AVN while watching YouTube on their portable screen. Basically, the driver can play music while the passenger watches YouTube with one smartphone. AVN supports other multitasking operations such as running a car software update as the navigation app works on the smartphone.

Personalized screen per user

Land Rover Defender’s AVN UI for creating user profiles

On the road, we often find ourselves sharing the cabin with family members or work colleagues with different interface preferences. That’s why the LG IVI system lets you create multiple user accounts on the AVN so that everyone’s ideal screen layout is just a few presses away.

After selecting an account, the user’s personal wallpaper, playlist and recent destinations are displayed on screen. This feature is ideal for cars driven by more than one person.

As easy as a smartphone

Land Rover Defender’s AVN UI for launching apps

On the screen, users can even launch apps as they would on a smartphone, making it much easier to access online media stored on the Cloud. What’s more, its easy-to-use UI sports unique fonts, an intuitive menu layout and optimized menu structure let them access the menu instantly. And editing apps is easier and more intuitive too, meaning the layout and order of apps can be adjusted to one’s liking with ease.

Selecting apps to display on the Land Rover Defender’s AVN home screen

Single Sign-In eliminates the hassle of logging in multiple times for different apps as it permits users to log into their account once for complete app access. It’s the perfect example of the seamless experience, where the seamless smartphone experience is extended to the car.

Safe and secure

When leaving your car with a valet attendant, being logged into a profile on the AVN gives that person access to sensitive information, including home addresses and contacts – a serious security risk.

Land Rover Defender’s AVN UI with a phrase 'Valet Mode Enabled' and 'TAP TO UNLOCK' on it

To protect consumers’ personal information, Valet Mode password-protects the screen to prevent any unwanted access, perfect for when hiring a driver or lending a car to a friend.

Customizable cluster screen

The vehicle’s cluster provides key information like the speedometer, warning indicators, maps and other driving-related information. The driver can even enlarge one of these indicators to enhance its visibility or even display something in its full screen mode.

The IVI system developed by LG Electronics for Jaguar Land Rover can be found in various models, both internal combustion models and electric vehicles. LG’s goal is to provide more consumers around the world with the benefits of its IVI systems by bringing them to more premium automakers.

They also boast strong, consistent brightness with no corner dimming and produce clear, distortion-free pictures. What’s more, LG Miraclass is capable of displaying 68.7 billion color variations, enabling viewers to experience movies just as their creators intended them to be seen.

LG Miraclass also provides easy management for movie theater operators thanks to its intuitive software and facilitates greater space efficiency through eliminating the need for projection rooms. LG Launches Energy Efficient Multi V i With Cutting-Edge AI Engine

Equipped With Advanced AI Software, Company’s New, High-Efficiency
VRF Solution Delivers a Smarter, More Comfortable Indoor Environment

The front view of LG Multi V™ i with 26HP as a single frame

SEOUL, Feb. 8, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) has announced the launch of the new Multi V™ i, a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) solution equipped with the company’s highly evolved AI engine, in key global markets starting from Europe. Suitable for mid- to high-rise buildings, such as offices, schools, shopping malls, apartment buildings and hotels, the energy efficient Multi V i comes with a range of differentiated, smart features that help reduce energy consumption and deliver a more comfortable indoor environment – and a quieter outdoor environment – all-year-round.

AI Smart Care

The Multi V i’s sophisticated AI engine enables AI Smart Care, which leverages spatial and situational learning to optimize operation such as adjusting cooling or heating power according to several variables, including the number of people in the room, humidity levels as well as indoor and outside ambient temperature. This enables the product to improve energy savings by up to 24.7 percent.1 Meanwhile, AI Indoor Space Care helps maintain a steady temperature and reduce energy consumption by automatically turning on indoor units in occupied areas and turning them off in unoccupied areas.

AI Energy Management

Another efficiency-focused feature, AI Energy Management allows users to set energy consumption targets, which can help to lower the overall power usage of the Multi V i.

Noise Target Control

The Multi V i also helps to enhance the comfort of those living in neighboring buildings or houses. Users can set an operational noise limit (from 50 to 70 decibels2) in advance to ensure that the sound produced by the outdoor unit does not exceed the level of volume they’ve specified.

Weather Information Interlocking Control

Providing smart performance and convenience, the Weather Information Interlocking Control feature of LG’s VRF solution automatically selects custom operation modes – including Automatic Pre-heating and Automatic Snow Removal – based on the weather conditions.3 Automatic Pre-heating allows users to enjoy a warm indoor environment even on the coldest days of the year by automatically heating the room in advance, while Automatic Snow Removal prevents snow from accumulating and freezing on the outdoor unit.

Powerful Performance

Boasting powerful, dependable performance even in extreme weather conditions, the Multi V i has surpassed its predecessor, the Multi V 5, to become the most energy efficient LG VRF solution yet.4 The unit’s newly designed biomimetic fan and an enhanced air-flow path combine to reduce fan-motor power consumption,5 resulting in improved energy savings. LG’s outstanding, new model can provide fresh, comfortable indoor air in any season, working at full cooling capacity up to 43 degrees Celsius,6 and full heating capacity in temperatures as low as negative 10 degrees Celsius.7

AI Smart Up

The Multi V i’s AI engine powers a variety of smart features, such as Auto Tuning and Remote Upgrade, which help to improve convenience and the overall user experience. The Auto Tuning system automatically tunes the compressor and motor during initial installation or when they need replacing, allowing for faster and easier setup and servicing. Meanwhile, with the Remote Upgrade system, LG’s VRF solution can be automatically updated to the latest software version without an on-site service visit. Furthermore, the Multi V i offers AI Smart Diagnosis, which provides automated system analysis and easy-to-read status reports to help reduce service times and boost reliability.

“Boasting our outstanding AI engine, the new Multi V i offers enhanced energy-savings, a more pleasant indoor environment and exceptional convenience,” said James Lee, head of the Air Solution Business Unit at LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “LG will continue to deliver complete air solutions leveraging its cutting-edge AI and industry-leading HVAC technologies.”

SEOUL, Feb. 7, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) is showcasing its latest heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions at AHR Expo 2023, the U.S.’s largest HVAC event, taking place in Atlanta, from February 6-8. The company’s higher efficiency, customized solutions for commercial and residential applications are on display across two exhibition booths: the HVAC Solution booth and the Component Solutions booth.

In the HVAC Solution booth, LG is presenting a number of new-for-2023 solutions, including Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems, higher energy-efficient heat pumps, indoor air quality solutions and flexible building automation and connectivity products.

One of the highlights of the HVAC booth is the LG Multi V™ i, an all-electric VRF cooling and heating solution equipped with the company’s AI Engine. The latest Multi V also boasts Edge computing architecture, intelligent operation based on real-time weather conditions as well as remote software and firmware upgradability. A next-generation VRF system, the Multi V i has a single refrigerant circuit that makes it possible to connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Additionally, it provides options that help maximize energy efficiency and minimize operational costs, and is suitable for a wide range of commercial applications. Offering engineers and building owners outstanding flexibility in terms of performance and design, the Multi V i is available in capacities from 6 to 44 tons and can be used in single or dual-frame modular configurations.

LG’s Inverter Scroll Heat Pump Chiller raises the standard for solutions in the air-cooled chiller category. The LG Inverter Scroll Heat Pump Chiller is designed for cooling and heating. With an impressive integrated part load value (IPLV)1 of 19.46, LG’s chiller can be used in many sectors for many types of use scenarios, providing a reliable mechanical solution for both large- and small-capacity applications. The Inverter Scroll Heat Pump Chiller’s performance and versatility can be attributed to several key components, including LG’s inverter technology, which enables a precise and efficient response to load demand and industry-leading low-ambient, high-efficiency heating. What’s more, a modular design allows system engineers to install the chiller using a two- or four-pipe configuration to provide simultaneous cooling and heating functionality without sacrificing efficiency or performance.

An AHR 2022 Innovation Award winner in the ventilation category, the LG Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) is a commercial ventilation system that also delivers effective dehumidification, cooling and heating. Able to control the temperature and humidity of the air inside a building or facility, DOAS comes equipped with a dual heat recovery system that minimizes energy loss. Meanwhile, the LG Therma V™ Air to Water Heat Pump (AWHP) solution provides efficient, dependable heating, cooling and hot water supply, and is an excellent replacement for a domestic-use gas boiler.

Using the company’s smart home platform, the LG ThinQ™ app, customers can remotely control and monitor their LG HVAC residential solutions and LG home appliances. And through LG ThinQ Smart Diagnosis, they can maintain the performance of their LG products and make direct inquiries to LG system experts should the need arise.

At AHR 2023, LG is also demonstrating its differentiated core product components in the Component Solutions booth. All of the company’s new Inverter compressors utilize low-GWP refrigerants, R454B and R32, meaning they already comply with new U.S. regulations on refrigerant use that will come into force in 2025.2 Additionally, the Component Solutions booth hosts LG’s large-capacity scroll compressors for the commercial system air conditioning market.

“Heat pumps will continue to gain momentum in the global HVAC market in 2023 and our advanced VRF technology will enable us to take full advantage of this,” said James Lee, head of the Air Solution Business Unit at LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “The ‘electrification’ trend is moving America away from fossil fuels and towards cleaner heating and cooling solutions, such as those from the extensive line of efficient, high-performance LG innovations on display at AHR 2023. We will continue to introduce advanced HVAC solutions designed to maximize customer value and expand our presence to the global air conditioning market.”

Visitors to LG’s booth (#6509, Georgia World Congress Center) at AHR Expo 2023 can experience the full portfolio of LG HVAC solutions.

[On the Job] LG SIC Center: Making Smart Home Appliances Smarter

In this installment of On the Job, we go inside LG’s System Integrated Circuit (SIC) Center to learn how LG is leveraging the latest AI to help deliver new customer experiences.

Side view of LG MoodUP InstaView™ refrigerator installed in the dining room

Imagine if there was a refrigerator that could play music and change color to match your current mood or spice up your kitchen décor. Well, as it happens, such a fridge actually exists – the newly introduced refrigerator with MoodUP™ from LG. The unique capabilities and customer experiences offered by LG’s latest kitchen innovation owe much to the LG8111, an on-device AI system-on-chip (SoC) developed by LG’s SIC Center.

Even before it was known as LG Electronics, the company began producing chips for consumer electronics as far back as 1992, at the ASIC Center under Goldstar’s Central Research Institute. Now, LG’s SIC Center is responsible for developing all of the AI chips used in LG products. These technologies have evolved over time to become the AI-based integrated circuits now used in cutting-edge appliances and home entertainment solutions such as LG OLED TV, and now, the fridge with MoodUP™.

Greatly expanding the customer experience, the company’s latest AI chips can process innumerable data points and enable LG appliances to communicate with one another – and with other smart devices as well. LG8111, the new AI chip used in the MoodUP™, features an acceleration engine that processes information gathered from the refrigerator’s built-in cameras, microphones and sensors in real time. This allows the MoodUP™ to quickly recognize changes in its immediate environment and adjust performance accordingly, facilitate more convenient interactions with users and accurately assess if all of its features are functioning optimally.

The LG8111, a highly integrated AI chip that is equipped with an LG-specific AI processor

Recognizing the importance that AI will play in consumer electronics and wanting to find a solution to differentiate LG products, engineers at the LG SIC Center began to develop the LG8111 in 2017 and created the first prototype in 2018. The LG8111, a highly integrated AI chip that is equipped with an LG-specific AI processor, is perfectly designed for LG products. While the chip performs and functions better online, its AI functions can also be utilized offline as well.

Impressively, the LG8111 can provide three types of AI: vision intelligence (the ability to recognize and distinguish between different spaces, locations, objects and users), voice intelligence (the ability to recognize users’ voices or specific noises associated with a certain type of space) and control intelligence (the ability to adjust and optimize performance according to physical or chemical changes in the environment). Also, when connected to Wi-Fi, any product equipped with the LG8111 can transmit information to nearby devices or to cloud servers.

“We spent a considerable amount of time deciding which device would be the first to apply our new on-device AI chip,” said Chang Woon-suk, lead of Smart Solution TP, LG SIC Center.

Various appliances were in contention, but ultimately, the SIC team decided to go with a refrigerator, a choice made because the household fridge has the distinction of being the only home appliance to operate 24/7. The first recipient of the state-of-the-art chip, the color-changing LG refrigerator with MoodUP™ boasts a seamless voice recognition feature that allows for convenient, remote control and monitoring via the LG ThinQ app.

“All of our top-notch researchers at the LG SIC Center are dedicated to developing chip solutions based on the core goal of maximizing customer value,” said Chang. “While we’re pleased with the success of the LG8111, we will continue to push the envelope as a team to take the customer experience to the next level.”

The successful implementation of the LG8111 in the new LG refrigerator with MoodUP™ opens the way for the chip’s use in a wide range of LG solutions, from other smart home appliances to electric vehicle components.

Stay tuned to Beyond News to learn more about the innovative technologies LG is using to drive the customer experience forward.
