The Oldest Washing Machine in the Country

The promotional image of LG Peru's The Oldest Washer in Peru contest

After the house and the car, home appliances are usually the next most expensive item consumers buy. Because of its cost, the lifespan of an appliance is one of the most important factors consumers take into consideration when making a purchase. Just as important is reliabililty because a refrigerator breaking down has far greater consequences than a TV that needs repairing. With this in mind, the LG team in Peru introduced a unique contest last month called The Oldest Washer in Peru to demonstrate the exceptional durability of LG washing machines through real life examples.

The 1993 Goldstar washer belonging to Carmen family which was the ultimate winner of The Oldest Washer in Peru contest

More than a thousand LG washing machine owners in Peru took part in the campaign, some with machines more than a decade old. But even they didn’t stand a chance next to the ultimate winner: a 1993 Goldstar model belonging to Carmen Mayhua of Lima.

A loyal companion for twenty-eight years and still counting, the washing machine isn’t the only vintage Goldstar product in the Mayhua household – the family also owns a working Goldstar TV that was purchased in the same year as the washer, a demonstration of the quality and durability of LG products. To reward the Mayhuas for their loyalty, LG gifted them a premium, modern LG Top Load Washer featuring TurboWash3D™ Technology.

A YouTube and Facebook video featuring the story of the Mayhua family and their beloved washing machine has already been viewed more than 1.5 million times with 12 million impressions.

The owners of a 20-year-old Goldstar dryer posing with their old machine

The story of the amazing durability of LG appliances can be seen world-over. In Korea, a 20-year-old Goldstar dryer was returned to LG by its owners as they felt it was a shame to throw away such a great product that still worked well. The lifelong customers said that the dryer was the best appliance they had ever owned.

These marvelous products were made possible thanks to LG’s innovative technology accumulated and developed over many years. The contest in Peru was a great opportunity to prove how reliable and durable LG washers are. Through continuous innovation, LG will continue to introduce even more differentiated home appliances that satisfy the needs of consumers.

The LG-KOICA TVET College in Ethiopia

For many Koreans, Ethiopia is more than just a developing country in East Africa known for its famous coffee. LG Announces 2021 Financial Results

Highest Full-Year and Fourth-Quarter Revenues in LG Electronics’
History Driven by Strong Demand in Premium Home Appliances and TVs

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Jan. 27, 2022 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) continued its strong performance in 2021, achieving the highest annual revenues in its history with full-year sales of KRW 74.72 trillion (USD 65.32 billion). This increase of 28.7 percent over 2020 was attributed primarily to stronger sales of premium home appliances and OLED TVs. Operating profit of KRW 3.86 trillion (USD 3.38 billion) was essentially unchanged, declining 1 percent from the previous year.

LG also reported record sales in the fourth quarter with revenues of KRW 21.01 trillion (USD 17.76 billion), an increase of 20.7 percent from the same quarter the previous year. Operating profit of KRW 677.7 billion (USD 572.87 million) in the quarter declined 21.4 percent from the same quarter a year earlier due in large part to factors such as higher raw material and global logistics costs. As challenging business conditions persist into 2022, LG is staying the course to strengthen competitiveness by further improving its cost structure and continuing to expand the presence of its premium appliances and TVs in the global market.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company saw another record-setting year with 2021 revenues of KRW 27.11 trillion (USD 23.70 billion), an increase of 21.7 percent from the previous year, driven largely by strong performance in new appliance categories such as hygiene products. Annual operating profit of KRW 2.22 trillion (USD 1.94 billion) was 2.9 percent lower than in the previous year due to higher costs for raw materials and global logistics. Record fourth-quarter revenues of KRW 6.52 trillion (USD 5.52 billion) were 17.7 percent higher than the same period 2020.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported 2021 revenue growth of 30.6 percent to KRW 17.22 trillion (USD 15.05 billion) with operating profit increasing 18.1 percent over the previous year to KRW 1.1 trillion (USD 961.45 million), reflecting LG’s success in responding to the higher demand for premium TVs during the pandemic. Revenues in the quarter of KRW 4.99 trillion (USD 4.21 billion) were 16.4 percent higher than fourth quarter the prior year and up 19.2 percent from the previous quarter owing to the growth in demand for premium OLED and large-screen TVs in key regions of Europe and North America.

The LG Vehicle component Solutions Company increased revenues by 24 percent in 2021 from 2020 to KRW 7.19 trillion (USD 6.29 billion), exceeding KRW 7 trillion for the first time. Revenues in the fourth quarter of KRW 1.68 trillion (USD 1.42 billion) declined 12.3 percent from the same quarter the previous year. Under the cloud of uncertainty created by the new COVID-19 variant, the global automotive market experienced significant disruption due to the shortage of automotive semiconductors.

The LG Business Solutions Company achieved 2021 revenues of KRW 6.96 trillion (USD 6.09 billion), a 15.8 percent increase over the previous year while higher material costs and supply chain challenges resulted in an annual operating profit of KRW 144.3 billion (USD 126.15 million). Fourth-quarter revenues increased 14 percent from the same period in 2020 to KRW 1.72 trillion (USD 1.46 billion) on the back of strong demand for premium PCs and gaming monitors. An increase in cost of global logistics and slowdown of solar module sales due to increased competition contributed to a fourth-quarter operating loss of KRW 35.1 billion (USD 29.67 miillion).

Combining Art and Technology in the Wilderness With Self-Lit OLED TV

The interior of the project house decorated and designed luxuriously by LG and Paweł Jurkiewicz, the Polish interior designer

A modern interior blended with sophisticated design and technology surrounded by nature creates the perfect environment to enjoy life. To create a home fitting for a premium lifestyle, LG Electronics Poland recently collaborated with architect and interior designer, Paweł Jurkiewicz, whose aesthetics are best described as a combination of various forms, textures and materials inspired by contemporary design and, now, cutting-edge technology.

A splendid mansion with a curvaceous exterior design where the Project House took place

The project house of LG Poland and Paweł Jurkiewicz, a splendid mansion covering more than 1,000 square meters, is located on the bank of the Narew River. This iconic place features a curvaceous exterior design symbolizing the winding shape of the river. With its glass-paneled interior opening into the wilderness, the surrounding trees and meadows have been fully preserved while a swimming pool and running track were added to fit the lifestyle of the occupants.

The contemporary dining room of the Project House in Poland decorated by LG appliances and the Polish interior desginer, Paweł Jurkiewicz

“The biggest challenge was to balance modern architecture using concrete, steel and glass to create a warm, intimate atmosphere,” says Paweł Jurkiewicz. He began with natural materials, including dark oak, warm gray marble and soft beige tones while utilizing draped woolen curtains to knit it all together.

A stylish living room decorated with LG SIGNATURE TV that fits perfectly into the modern interior.

Jurkiewicz always opts for strong contrasts among elements to make the interior more significant and luxurious. “The striped black-and-white stone of the RiFRA kitchen island and the smooth cobalt rug by Edition Bougainville in the living room give more personal touch. Also, they make the space look more elegant, relaxed and capacious,” says Jurkiewicz.

And, when selecting electronic devices to fill in the house, Jurkiewicz was seeking the ideal realization of the best performance, design and technology. He wanted products with best performance featuring beautiful, slim design that could fit perfectly into modern interiors, while also being friendly to nature.

A room with a luxurious lounge chair placed next to a wall-mounted LG OLED TV

To realize his vision, the designer worked with specialists from the LG Brand Store in Warsaw and chose eight different LG OLED TVs for the living room, bedrooms, study, gym and swimming pool. Thanks to LG’s self-lit OLED, LG OLED TVs can display content with infinite contrast, deep blacks and amazing colors. Also, the least harmful plastics are used in the production of LG OLED TVs, as confirmed by the SGS Eco Product certificate.

A photo of the bedroom with LG's ceiling-mounted 65-inch OLED TV

“For the huge living room, we opted for the 88-inch LG OLED TV from the premium SIGNATURE line. The perfect proportions and refined finish with the brushed steel housing harmoniously complements the luxurious décor,” adds Jurkiewicz. And, for the bedroom, the architect opted for the 65-inch OLED TV, set up on a retractable ceiling mount, so that the occupants can enjoy movies lying comfortably in their bed at night, while also enjoying the unobstructed sunlight in the morning.

“Throughout the collaboration with LG, I learned first-hand that technology can help designers actualize their vision. Therefore, designers must look for innovative solutions as I did, thanks to help from LG. Then, no design elements or user convenience have to be compromised in the process,” concludes Jurkiewicz.

LG Sets New Paradigm With Upgradable Home Appliances That Deliver More Benefits Over Time

Disruptive Concept in Ownership Extends Usability of Appliances
That Can Be Upgraded to Meet New Usage Trends, Patterns

LG Upgradable appliances product line up including the InstaView refrigerator, WashTower washer and dryer set, PuriCare AeroTower air purifying fan, PuriCare air purifier, Tower air conditioner, Styler and AI DD washer and dryer

SEOUL, Jan. 25, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) is set to change the existing paradigm of home appliance usage with an upgradability option that adapts to the unique and changing lifestyles of customers. Developed under the concept, Evolving Appliances For You, LG upgradable appliances have the capability to incorporate new features developed in the future based on owners’ usage patterns and habits.

What upgradability brings to the table is the ability to add a new function or convenience to an existing appliance through new software, new hardware or both. For example, users can improve the performance of the LG PuriCare air purifier when a new pet joins the family by upgrading with the Pet Care Filter to more thoroughly filter out pet fur and dander from the air.1 Upgradable LG dryers can be enhanced later on to handle different climates and fabrics with new accessories and software downloadable from the Upgrade Center in the LG ThinQ app.

For the customer, upgradability enables the LG appliance to keep up with changing trends and usage patterns over the many years of that product’s lifespan, extending usefulness many times over. In all, LG is planning to introduce approximately 20 upgradable appliances this year.2

“Upgradeability challenges the idea that expensive appliances are designed with planned obsolescence in mind,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We want customers to experience the feeling of getting a new washer or refrigerator throughout the entire lifecycle of an LG appliance, not just the first time they bring the item home.”

Customers in specific markets can expect to see LG’s first upgradable washer and dryer later this year. Follow LG’s Home Appliance Instagram account (@lg_homeappliances) for more information when available.

Bringing LG’s Lifestyle TV to the Pearl of the Orient

LG StanbyME on display at the Hong Kong launch event.

With online video content increasingly becoming more integrated into our daily lives, consumers are becoming even more reliant on this form of media for entertainment, information and social interaction. LG’s response to this trend is LG StanbyME, a 27-inch wireless screen with a built-in battery attached to movable stand, offering unrivalled convenience and viewing comfort to make it the ideal companion for today’s viewing habits.

The walls of the Study Room Zone with a picture of a model and an explanation of LG StanbyME.

Unlike a PC, LG StanbyME is mobile, with its own battery for three hours of viewing between charges. Unlike a laptop, LG StanbyME offers a touchscreen and doesn’t require a desk or a lap. Unlike a tablet, LG StanbyME delivers content on a spacious 27-inch display.

To celebrate the first launch of this category-busting home entertainment product outside of South Korea, the Hong Kong team at LG Electronics designed a pop-up event in Central Market last week. Redesigned in 2021 as a Playground for All, Central Market is a local landmark of culture and heritage and the ideal location for LG to introduce the product’s revolutionary design and easy-to-use features.

The event stage was divided into four major zones – Kitchen, Living Room, Study Room and Product Island – to demonstrate how the product perfectly fits into diverse, modern lifestyle settings.

In the Living Room zone, LG StanbyME was accompanied by LG appliances including LG CordZero A9 Kompressor vacuum cleaner and LG PuriCare Air Purifier to illustrate how its clean, sleek design easily blends into a typical living space. The screen demonstrated its ability to support a diverse selection of content via pre-installed apps from top content providers including Netflix, Disney+ and popular local content from ViuTV.

A special live streaming section in the Study Room zone highlighted the versatility of the device’s Mobile Screen Mirroring feature using NFC. By connecting their smartphones to LG StanbyME, users can comfortably view everything on their phones on the larger display. LG StanbyME also connects to the LG ThinQ app, LG’s proprietary AI platform, to control specific functions on the display.

With its built-in rollers and the rotatable screen that can be displayed both in vertical and horizontal orientations, LG StanbyME’s strengths in mobility and flexibility were on full display at the launch event, attracting modern cosmopolitans who are always on the lookout for uplifting personal lifestyle products that offer unique customer values and support home-centric lifestyles.

Visitors of the LG StanbyME launch event experiencing the new device at its Hong Kong launch event.

What the guests immediately appreciated about LG StanbyME was the fact that this was a product that was designed for and during a time when consumers are reevaluating their habits when it comes to entertainment. As the world – including Hong Kong – enters the third year of a global pandemic, consumers have gotten used to the idea of entertaining themselves at home rather than frequenting cinemas and theaters.

For these consumers, LG StanbyME couldn’t have come at a better time.

Union Workers at LG Electronics Recognized by United Nations

LG’s Labor Union Among NGOs Singled Out for Promoting UN’s Aims and Purposes

The logo of LG Electronics USR

SEOUL, Jan. 18, 2022 — Unionized workers at LG Electronics (LG) in South Korea have been conferred special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) for their efforts to prioritize ESG in the workplace. Being the first Korean labor union to be awarded such status with the UN is testament to the LG’s prioritization and continued dedication to union social responsibility (USR), a key component of the company’s commitment to ESG management.

Consultative status is granted by ECOSOC upon recommendation by the Committee on NGOs, which is composed of 19 member states all who must demonstrate that their work has direct relevance to the aims and purposes of the United Nations. The recognition allows non-governmental organizations (NGOs) access to the many subsidiaries of the ECOSOC and the human rights expertise of the UN. Since the LG Electronics Union Social Responsibility Charter was introduced in 2010, LG assembly plant workers worldwide have signed on to the organization’s vision.

While ESG evokes images of the environment and volunteerism in most people’s minds, how a company treats its employees, one of its most important stakeholder groups, is a critical component of an organization’s ESG performance. According to one study, companies that score high in employee satisfaction and their ability to attract good talent have significantly higher ESG scores than other organizations.

“We are of course extremely proud of the recognition bestowed upon us by the UN for our efforts to fulfill our responsibilities to our members, society and the environment,” said Bae Sang-ho, the head of LG Electronics’ Union. “We are committed to leveraging this honor to encourage other unions to expand their own USR activities.”

Coming Together for the Love of Gaming

With global social distancing guidelines forcing millions to work or attend classes from the comfort of their homes, virtual gaming has emerged as the top form of leisure in Kenya, bringing people together online.

According to a report by PwC, Kenya was ranked among the top ten gaming hubs in Africa in 2019 with the local market projected to reach USD 118 million by 2022, doubling in size in just five years. The industry is quickly shaking off the narrative that gaming is just for kids and idlers and is being recognized as a tool for social and economic empowerment as the esports ecosystem matures and touches on other industries such as event planning and game development.

To offer local consumers a peek at the future of esports, the LG team in Kenya set up the PSG FIFA Fan Fest 2021 League, a premier esports competition to give young athletes an opportunity to play against the best, to become the best. Organized in partnership with Pro Series Gaming (PSG), a top esports brand in Africa, the program attracted 128 players divided into two pools of 64 players.

All matches were played on 65-inch LG OLED TVs, ideal for esports because of their extremely low input lag and unmatched 1ms response time. With every move the players made appearing instantaneously on screen, there was plenty of action and suspense over the six months of the tournament.

The two top winners of each pool were awarded LG Tone Free wireless earbuds while the second and third-ranked players each took home LG Bluetooth speakers. LG’s Advanced In-Vehicle Infotainment System Featured in New Luxury Electric Sedan

Advanced IVI System Boasts Pillar to Pillar
Touch Display for Seamless, Intuitive User Experience

Inside the Marcedes-Benz EQS EV sedan equipped with LG’s newest premium in-vehicle infotainment system

SEOUL, Jan. 12, 2022 — LG Electronics’ (LG) newest premium in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system will be a central feature in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS EV sedan, the Pillar to Pillar (P2P) display built into the MBUX Hyperscreen that stretches across the entire width of the dashboard. With its unique interior concept and revolutionary human-machine interface, the first luxury electric vehicle from Mercedes-Benz AG highlights the futuristic trends in electric vehicle design and points to an exciting vision for future mobility.

First introduced by Mercedes-Benz AG at CES 2021, the MBUX Hyperscreen consists of three screens including LCD display, ICD (Instrument Cluster Display) and two OLED displays, CID (Central Information Display) and CDD (Co-Driver Display) under a bonded glass cover to give the appearance of a single, continuous display. The use of advanced plastic OLED (P-OLED) display technology enables the infotainment system in the Mercedes-Benz EQS EV to deliver clear, sharp images and text and slim bezels with no physical knobs means occupants get an intuitive touch interface with refined haptics for a user experience (UX) with minimal learning curve.

LG’s IVI system was specifically designed to meet the needs of Mercedes-Benz AG with the curved, panoramic form factor required by the ultra-sleek sedan. LG’s in-house Production Engineering Research Institute, tasked with providing in-house expertise for equipment and material components as well as advanced production techniques, developed the core technologies implemented in the display: Curved Glass Forming, Surface Treatment and Curved Display Bonding.

Working closely together, LG and Mercedes-Benz AG engineers are taking in-vehicle displays such as instrument panels and navigation systems to a new level, providing drivers and passengers with greater convenience and control of their on-road experience. The visually-pleasing IVI system in the Mercedes-Benz EQS EV not only raises the bar for ease-of-use but also safety, featuring new technologies that perform well above minimum standards for head-on and collisions.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to work in close collaboration with a trusted partner such as Mercedes-Benz AG,” said Eun Seok-hyun, president of the LG Vehicle component Solutions Company. “Being named a valued supplier of automotive displays by Mercedes-Benz AG last year gives us immense pride in knowing that the partnership is showing great results.”

As an innovative partner for future mobility, LG Electronics’ Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company is working with global automakers such as Mercedes-Benz AG to become a leading developer of connectivity, infotainment and ADAS solutions to deliver differentiated in-vehicle experiences. LG is committed to diversifying its portfolio to further strengthen its capabilities with acquisitions including automotive lighting and headlight systems provider ZKW Group and software cybersecurity company Cybellum as well as the joint venture, LG-Magna e-Powertrain.
