LG’s Journey Towards ‘Better Life for All’

LG's digital billboard in Time Square, New York displaying a video of LG's Only One Earth campaign

The 5th of June marks the annual celebration of World Environment Day, an occasion to focus on what each of us can do to preserve the natural world for future generations. Fully dedicated to the cause, LG strives to foster a better environment for all lives to thrive by means of combating climate change, facilitating circular economies and achieving energy efficiency.

An Inspiring Message About Climate Change

LG’s iconic ultra-high-definition digital billboard in New York City’s Times Square is one of the few screens in the world seen by hundreds of thousands of passersby each day.

Making use of these impactful channels for this year’s World Environment Day, LG presented a poignant short film calling on united action for #OnlyOneEarth. On screen from June 2nd, the film zeroes in on many of the pressing environmental challenges that our world faces today, including climate change. The film is consecutive of LG’s environmental series, following a 3D production that aired on the billboard in NYC’s Times Square earlier this year.

Human hands holding sprouts

A company more inclined to inspire through action rather than words, LG is making tangible efforts to combat climate change. To achieve its Zero Carbon 2030 pledge established in 2019, LG is taking strategic steps to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the entire manufacturing process from production to use by 2030.

LG's booth at CES 2022 entirely made out of upcycled, recycled and recyclable materials.

CES 2022 was another occasion in which LG’s efforts to scale down negative climate impact were brought to the spotlight. As a big advocate for recycling processes that bring us one step closer to a zero-carbon society, LG made sure to construct its CES booth entirely of recycled oriented strand board (OSB) plywood. No glue, paint or varnish was used during its construction and its simplified design helped streamline the recycling process when it was time to pack up.

Taking Steps for a Circular Economy

A circular economy is a system of production and consumption which involves processes of reusing and recycling existing materials. Through a commitment to use a cumulative total of 600,000 tons of recycled plastic from 2021 to 2030, LG aims to increase high-quality recycling and thereby push towards a circular economy in the electronics industry.

A view overlooking the LG Chilseo Recycling Center.

The LG Chilseo Recycling Center (CRC) in South Korea well demonstrates LG’s commitment to better recycling resources and processes. Since its establishment in August 2001, the facility has spearheaded LG’s e-waste initiative by collecting electronic waste at the end of product lifecycles, re-using recycled plastic for the manufacturing of new components and shipping parts to the company’s home appliance plant nearby for use in new products.

A lion wandering around the zoo where large-sized upcycled boxes provide great source of entertainment

Applying its recycling practices to wider CSR activities, LG has been annually donating four hundred boxes formerly used to package large appliances to the ‘Animal Behavior Enrichment Program*’ operated at Seoul Grand Park located in Korea. The sturdy, large-sized upcycled boxes offer a great source of entertainment for zoo animals inhabiting the park, and minimize the environmental impact caused by excess waste – a total win-win for everyone.

The entire look and theme of The Second Life Campaign venue which will be available in numerous locations across the United States

With the aim of fostering circularity in the company’s respective industry and expanding its influence, LG launched its “Second Life” campaign in the US last year. The nationwide clothing drive successfully bestowed a second life to more than 5,000 pounds of gently used clothes.

Partnering for an Energy-Efficient Future

Delivering products that meet the latest energy and eco standards is an important part of LG’s environmental initiative. Partnering with ENERGY STAR® has helped to widen the company’s offerings.

Two people handshaking with a shape of Earth at the background

LG has been a partner of the ENERGY STAR® program since 2012. Jointly established by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy to promote energy-efficiency, the program provides accurate energy-consumption information for a wide range of products and devices. The company’s commitment to producing energy-efficient innovations not only benefits consumers, but the environment as well.

At the 2022 ENERGY STAR Awards, LG won both the Sustained Excellence Award and the Emerging Technology Award in recognition of its dedication to energy efficiency and reducing its carbon footprint.

Through original campaigns, raising awareness of key issues and, of course, its dedication to innovation, LG will continue to uphold its commitment to taking care of our planet and creating a better life for all. #OnlyOneEarth.

LG’s Eco-Conscious Initiatives for a Better Tomorrow

An illustration including LG's various home appliances

According to a study on global health and wellness conducted by NielsenIQ last year, people’s awareness of environmental issues, and the negative effects they can have on our collective health both now and in the future, are at an all-time high.1

Recognizing the threat posed by climate change and global warming, more and more people have committed to recycling, reducing household waste and choosing products from brands that share their concern for the environment. LG, a company that continues to prioritize the health of the planet, is actively seeking solutions to the world’s climate-related problems, leveraging its state-of-the-art technologies to cut carbon and greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency at the same time.

Reducing Emissions from the Manufacturing Process

A graph of LG's global carbon emission status and targets
Global Carbon Emission Status and Targets (Korea + Overseas)

First announced in 2019, LG’s Zero Carbon 2030 initiative aims to cut the total amount of direct and indirect carbon emissions generated during the production process by 50 percent (compared to 2017 levels). In addition to its far-reaching 2030 initiative, LG last year became the first Korean company to join the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign, which unites corporates and government agencies in a global effort to reach ‘net zero.’ The campaign’s objectives are based on scientific data authored by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and include the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Aligned with this, LG has already made significant progress in cutting GHG emissions throughout the home appliance manufacturing process. LG Smart Park in Changwon, named a Lighthouse Factory by the World Economic Forum, is playing a major part in curbing GHG emissions during production, while also elevating energy efficiency by 30 percent compared to the company’s previous Changwon facility. Among the many innovations at LG Smart Park helping to shrink the company’s energy footprint are state-of-the-art energy management solutions such as the Energy Storage System (ESS) and Building Energy Control (BECON).2

Reducing Resource Usage with LG’s Inverter Technology

LG is also committed to helping consumers achieve a more eco-conscious lifestyle by limiting GHG emissions and improving energy efficiency during actual usage of its home appliances. LG refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and air conditioners adopting the company’s renowned Inverter technology optimize electricity consumption by delivering highly-efficient operations.

Using less power than conventional refrigerator compressors3, the company’s Inverter Linear Compressor has also been recognized by the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for reduced gas emissions.4

Eco-conscious Packaging and Recycled Plastics

An image comparing the previous and current packing method of LG products

Making environmentally responsible changes to product packaging can help to protect our planet, too. LG has developed its own packaging-design guidelines to reduce waste and move away from materials that can potentially harm the Earth and people’s health. The guidelines prescribe a more minimal use of packaging materials to reduce overall packaging volume and reveal the company’s increased focus on reusing and recycling. All LG home appliances will soon incorporate eco-conscious packaging. The company has already decreased its annual usage of polystyrene by 19 tons through the adoption of polypropylene packaging for the outdoor units of its system air conditioners.

A bird's-eye view of the forest

Through diverse initiatives, solutions and cutting-edge technologies, LG will continue to reduce its environmental impact and help create a better tomorrow for all.

LG’s Software Testing Center Earns Accreditation From TÜV Rheinland

Company’s Facility First to be Confirmed by Global Testing and Certification
Organization to Evaluate the Functional Safety of Automotive Software

Kim Byoung-hoon, CTO of LG Electronics, and Frank Juettner, Representative Director & CEO of TÜV Rheinland Korea, posing together for a photo at the ceremony

SEOUL, June 2, 2022 — LG Electronics’ (LG) Software Testing Center has officially been designated a TÜV Rheinland Appointed Laboratory, meaning the facility can now conduct functional safety tests on any automotive software solution that falls under the ISO 26262-6 standard.* World’s first of its kind to earn this status, LG’s Software Testing Center possesses the capabilities to independently assess and confirm the quality and functional safety of a wide range of automotive software products, from self-driving systems and in-vehicle networks to electric and electronic devices.

According to the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (ILAC MRA), reports issued by LG’s Software Testing Center will be recognized in 70 countries and territories, including the United States and Europe, and will carry the same credibility as those issued by a dedicated third-party testing agency.

In order to receive confirmation from TÜV Rheinland, one of the world’s leading global testing organizations, an institute or facility must meet a wide range of strict standards covering criteria such as test environment, equipment, capabilities and processes.

With its new status as a TÜV Rheinland Appointed Laboratory for automotive functional safety software, the lab is now able to meet growing auto industry demand by testing and providing TÜV Rheinland confirmation for companies’ vehicle software solutions. This latest accomplishment also provides LG with an opportunity to further strengthen its competitiveness in the rapidly expanding field of automotive software.

Last year, LG’s Software Testing Center received accreditation from the internationally respected Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS), becoming an ISO 26262-6 certified lab for evaluating autonomous vehicle software and measuring the quality of electric and electronic products (IEC 61508-3). LG is currently the only Korean manufacturer that can independently produce and issue a KOLAS-sanctioned report covering all these key areas.

“We’re deeply proud of the fact that our software lab has earned TÜV Rheinland confirmation and KOLAS accreditation in the span of less than one year,” said Dr. Kim Byoung-hoon, CTO and executive vice president of LG Electronics. “LG will continue to secure world-class automotive software capabilities to provide a differentiated customer experience based on a high level of safety.”

To create something special for the event, LG has teamed up with premium Dutch lifestyle brand, Moooi, to showcase a stylish, modern living solution. The resulting collaboration, which embraces Moooi’s signature ‘A Life Extraordinary’ exhibition theme, features the perfect pairing of LG’s latest lifestyle TVs and Moooi’s extraordinary design products. Representing an exciting new direction for TV, the LG OLED Objet Collection is sure to bolster LG’s growing reputation as a leading lifestyle innovator.

LG OLED Objet Collection, Easel (65Art90) offers the superior picture quality one would expect from an LG OLED TV as well as an effortlessly elegant design that can elevate any home interior. As its name suggests, the TV resembles an easel used for painting or displaying art; a fitting form factor for showcasing the magnificent colors and contrast of LG’s self-lit display tech. Easel also has a movable fabric cover that can be controlled with the TV’s remote. When set to Line View, the cover slides up – reducing the amount of screen visible and giving users access to useful features and modes such as Date & Clock and audio player.

Like LG’s other premium 2022 OLED TVs, the new, artistically-inspired model leverages LG OLED evo technology to deliver incredibly lifelike images and an immersive, cinematic viewing experience. Combined with LG’s cutting-edge picture algorithms and the α9 Gen5 AI Processor, LG OLED evo elevates the ability of the TV’s self-lit pixels to deliver superior clarity, detail, contrast and color, for images that practically jump off the screen. The sophisticated TV also provides rich, powerful audio with an 80W, 4.2-channel sound system that helps make the living room feel more like a movie theater. Employing fabric elements – including the movable cover – made by innovative Danish textile company, Kvadrat, LG’s unique, new product boasts a subtle, modern aesthetic that adds value to one’s living environment.

Also new to LG’s Lifestyle TV lineup is LG OLED Objet Collection, Posé (LX1), which features a slim, sleek design that blends seamlessly with any room’s décor and user’s lifestyle. Having been carefully designed to match customers’ wants and values, Posé is the perfect choice for those seeking a TV that takes their daily routine and experience into consideration.

Resembling a high-end furniture piece or art object, Posé has gently curved edges and comes in a soothing, muted beige color. And courtesy of its aesthetically-pleasing design that complements any décor, users can appreciate the striking beauty of Posé from every viewing point. The advanced model even eliminates the frustration of having to see or deal with messy cables thanks to an effective cable management system that minimizes clutter while promoting a clean and tidy space at all times.

In addition to looking stylish from any angle, the TV provides stunning OLED evo picture quality that remains perfectly consistent when viewed from practically any vantage point. And when it is not being used for watching movies or shows, Posé can be switched to Gallery mode; enabling users to display artwork or photos on LG’s self-lit digital canvas and transform their space into a refined art gallery.

“Reflecting our leadership in the OLED TV market, unrivaled expertise in cutting-edge display and processing technologies and deep understanding of consumers’ needs, the new Lifestyle Screen lineup delivers extraordinary experiences and exquisite design,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company.

“These distinctive TVs set themselves apart from conventional TVs with their unique form factors and finishes, and will likely appeal to consumers who understand and appreciate the value of genuine innovation.”

LG’s latest Lifestyle Screen products will be on display at the Salone dei Tessuti in Milan, Italy from June 7-12. Easel (65-inch screen size) and Posé (55-, 48-, and 42-inches) will be launching in Europe and other select markets from the third quarter of this year.

Visitors to the LG/Moooi exhibit can also expect to experience the great sound and unique designs of the LG Eclair soundbar (model QP5) and LG XBOOM 360 speaker (model RP4).

LG UltraGear Gaming Monitors First in the World to be Certified as VESA AdaptiveSync Display

Superb Gaming Monitors Boast the High Refresh Rates, Fast Response Times and Low Latency,
Meeting Demands of Today’s Gamers and VESA’s New Display Standard

Image of two UltraGear monitors with VESA AdaptiveSync logo

SEOUL, May 23, 2022 — LG Electronics’ (LG) UltraGear™ gaming monitors (models 27GP950 and 27GP850) are the first in the world to earn VESA® AdaptiveSync Display certification, launched by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). The new VESA® AdaptiveSync Display logo helps consumers to easily identify and compare the variable refresh rate (VRR) performance of gaming displays supporting VESA’s Adaptive-Sync protocol before they buy.

To be certified as the VESA AdaptiveSync Display, LG’s elite gaming monitors had to meet the exhaustive and rigorous requirements of the VESA Adaptive-Sync Display Compliance Test Specification (Adaptive-Sync Display CTS), which uses more than 50 test criteria to establish clear benchmarks for assessing monitors’ and laptops’ VRR capabilities. With high refresh rates, fast Gray-to-Gray (GTG) response times and low latency, the two UltraGear gaming monitors met or exceeded the test scores specified in VESA’s new open standard.

LG’s AdaptiveSync Display-certified monitors, LG UltraGear 27GP950 and 27GP850, provide the level of visual performance needed for seamless gaming experiences. Both models met required scores across VESA’s Adaptive-Sync Display CTS, including in several key measurements such as refresh rate, screen-flicker and response time. The two 27-inch gaming monitors feature advanced LG Nano IPS panels offering high refresh rates and a 1 millisecond GTG response time, allowing fluid gaming play and sharp, clean images for both PC and console games.

“The VESA Adaptive-Sync Display CTS creates a clear, consistent standard for display performance of gaming monitors and helps consumers to make informed purchasing decisions,” said Jim Choate, compliance program manager at VESA. “World’s first products to wear the new AdaptiveSync Display logo, LG’s UltraGear gaming monitors performed remarkably well in all applicable tests.”

“We are proud the LG UltraGear became the first-ever monitors to receive VESA AdaptiveSync Display certification” said Seo Young-jae, senior vice president and head of the IT business unit of LG Electronics Business Solutions Company. “With upcoming 2022 models including UltraGear 27GP95R, we will not only meet the high standards of VESA’s performance tests, but also satisfy the expectations and diverse needs of today’s consumers.”

2022 LG CineBeam Premium Projector Sets New Standard for the Home Cinema Experience

New 4K Ultra Short Throw Model Delivers Immersive Cinematic Experiences
with Sharp, Vibrant Images and Boasts Stylish, Modern Design

Use scenario of LG CineBeam – Two people are watching the projected screen in a living room

SEOUL, May 20, 2022 — LG Electronics (LG) is expanding its premium CineBeam 4K laser projector lineup with the remarkable, new Ultra Short Throw (UST) laser projector (model HU915QE), the follow up to the HU715Q released earlier this year. Designed with serious movie lovers in mind, LG’s latest flagship home cinema solution can produce a stunningly sharp 90-inch image when placed just 5.6 centimeters from the wall or a massive 120-inch picture at a distance of only 18.3 centimeters.1

Thanks to the HU915QE’s combination of advanced projection technology, users no longer need a large, dedicated space to enjoy sublime cinematic experiences at home. Boasting 3,700 ANSI lumens and an impressive 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, LG’s latest projector delivers vibrant, realistic pictures that ensure maximum viewing immersion. By adopting LG’s evolved, three-channel laser technology, which employs a separate light source for each primary (RGB) color, this new model is able to offer more vivid images even during the day compared to other conventional products with the single light source technology.2

An excellent all-rounder, the HU915QE really excels when playing movies and streaming content in 4K HDR, using HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping to analyze and adjust image brightness every single frame. LG’s Brightness Optimizer II further elevates the new CineBeam projector’s performance, automatically adjusting brightness levels according to ambient light conditions so that users can enjoy clear, vivid picture quality whether the room is well lit or as dark as a movie theater. Additionally, Adaptive Contrast adjusts the projector’s light sources to provide a superb contrast for each individual scene.

With LG’s intuitive webOS smart platform onboard, the HU915QE lets users watch all their favorite shows from streaming services3 such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube and Apple TV without an additional device. They can also wirelessly stream content via Screen Mirroring, Apple AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth.4 On top of that, its built-in 2.2 Channel, 40W speaker system enhances the viewing experience with strong, rich audio. For more powerful, theater-like surround sound, users can effortlessly connect up to two LG Bluetooth speakers at once.5

The new CineBeam projector also makes a stylish addition to any room with its eco-friendly ‘Re-wool’ designed by renowned Danish textile company, Kvadrat. Made from 45 percent recycled wool, this material has become a favorite of design- and sustainability-conscious companies worldwide, used in products as diverse as furniture and premium audio solutions. Thanks to its muted, natural color and clean design, the HU915QE blends in well with luxurious home interiors.

“Featuring LG’s latest projection technologies, the new CineBeam projector delivers outstanding 4K picture quality from a short distance,” said Seo Young-jae, senior vice president and head of the IT business unit of LG Electronics Business Solutions Company. “An excellent choice for movie lovers seeking authentically cinematic experiences at home, the HU915QE combines superb performance with convenient features, easy installation and a sophisticated, space-friendly design.”

Artistic Innovation on Display: Kevin McCoy Finds Perfect Digital Canvas in LG OLED

Innovation leads to new creations, new experiences and, sometimes, new ways of looking at the world. Encompassing all of these outcomes is the generative art of envelope-pushing artist and NFT pioneer, Kevin McCoy, who is presenting new works at the Frieze New York 2022 art fair in Manhattan from May 18-22. His ever-evolving works, which autonomously grow and change through the use of algorithms and other advanced tech, have found the perfect digital canvas in the form of the latest OLED TVs from the lifestyle innovator, LG.

McCoy’s thought-provoking and visually-stunning new pieces are on show at the ‘LG OLED Lounge,’ located on level eight of Frieze New York’s official venue, The Shed. A selection of his groundbreaking works are displayed on state-of-the-art LG OLED TVs, including new LG OLED evo models, which use millions of self-lit pixels to deliver the deepest blacks, incredibly natural colors and an infinite contrast ratio.

The centerpiece of the exhibit, Quantum Leap: Primordial Star 3 (2022), is an NFT, or non-fungible token, co-created by McCoy and his wife, Jennifer. Inspired by Kevin McCoy’s 2014 work Quantum – which was the first artwork ever to be tokenized on a blockchain – Quantum Leap: Primordial Star 3 employs code-based, interacting systems that produce mandalas that change form and color as they ‘age,’ echoing the lifespan of stars.

Displayed alongside Primordial Star 3 in the LG OLED Lounge are Quantum Leap 3: Dark Star (2022) and Quantum Entanglement (2022), both also created by the celebrated husband-and-wife duo. The ‘star’ in Dark Star slowly loses its color over the course of its life before being reborn with a new central shape and vivid palette, generated autonomously via programming. Quantum Entanglement is a hybrid of drawings and NFTs that explores the nature of drawing, which is at once a performative act and a physical document that recalls or points to the existence of that act. Featuring physical drawings and digital animations made using software and a robotic drawing machine, Quantum Entanglement fuses physical with virtual elements in a way that is sure to delight and intrigue audiences.

The shifting colors and forms of McCoy’s new works at Frieze New York are expressed with precision and vibrancy thanks to the next-generation display and processing technologies of LG OLED evo. LG’s new OLED evo Gallery Edition TVs offer higher brightness, clarity and detail for lifelike images that almost jump off the screen – with the 77- and 65-inch models used at the exhibit proving themselves as adept at showcasing digital art as they are at delivering outstanding viewing experiences.

Complementing LG OLED evo TV models, the LG OLED Lounge at Frieze New York also features the 55-inch Transparent OLED signage displays. Boasting vivid colors and high transparency, the advanced screen presents digital artists like McCoy with exciting, new creative opportunities to explore. What’s more, McCoy’s artwork is demonstrated on a LG OLED Objet Collection, an artistically inspired and distinctive lifestyle TV model.

LG was named Global Partner of the Frieze art fair, and this exhibit in New York exemplifies LG’s commitment to innovation within the arts and supporting artists to push their creative boundaries.

Building an Inclusive World with Tech

A long-standing commitment to bettering people’s lives – regardless of their age, understanding of technology or any physical challenges they may face – serves as the foundation for LG’s consumer innovations. LG continues to work hard to maximize the usability of its advanced home appliances, consulting with diverse users and leveraging its tech and design knowhow to ensure that all of its solutions are as accessible as possible.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day, which is held every year on the third Thursday of May, is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the importance of ‘inclusive technology’ and the positive difference it can make in the lives of people with disabilities and impairments. As May 19 approaches, let’s take a look at some of the innovative ways that LG is fostering greater accessibility and allowing all consumers, no matter their circumstances, to experience the full convenience and value of its cutting-edge products.

Home Entertainment for Everyone

LG believes that everyone should be able to enjoy first-class home entertainment and has developed assistive technologies to lower any barriers that may get in the way. The company’s diverse lineup of TVs now carries a variety of accessibility features, including audio guides for those with visual impairments and closed-captioning for those with hearing impairments, as well as simplified control (including voice command support) via the Magic Remote to make the whole experience easier – from adjusting the volume to accessing content services.

Removing Barriers from Household Chores

While some LG solutions offer customized assistance for users with certain disadvantages, others offer elevated convenience that can benefit everyone. One such product is the LG SideKick™ Pedestal Washer, a mini-washing machine designed to sit discretely below an LG front-load washer. The SideKick is ideal for small loads that need frequent washing, such as workout gear, and makes it possible to clean two loads of laundry at once. And because it raises the height of the main washer, it makes the task of loading and unloading laundry from the front-loader less taxing for most users.

Diverse Voices Guiding Way to ‘Barrier-Free’ Solutions

To develop home appliances that are accessible to the widest range of users, LG proactively seeks input from its customers and consults with experts in the field of disability inclusion. Since 2013, LGE US has been operating the LG Accessibility Advisory Board, which is made up of accessibility specialists, disability organizations and law firms. Through annual meetings and in-depth discussions, the council is helping LG to create barrier-free solutions that will enable more people to take advantage of all that its latest tech has to offer.

A group of people putting their hands together showing unity

At the same time, in South Korea, LG last year established an accessibility council consisting of accessibility experts and advisory group of disabled people. LG and the council’s experts are working together to formulate a measurement standard that will evaluate the accessibility of the company’s home appliances. The accessibility indicator will initially be used to assess the accessibility of LG TVs, washers, air conditioners and air purifiers, with other product categories to follow soon afterward. The advisory group of disabled people will actively join the creation of the measurement standard by directly experiencing and giving feedback on LG products under development.

With its comprehensive, considered approach to addressing the needs of all users, LG is helping to bring greater inclusivity to the consumer tech space, presenting thoughtful innovations that make daily life easier for everyone.
