Jackson Tisi and Young Artists Deliver Message of Hope

Hopes and aspirations for a good life are universal desires. However, defining what constitutes a good life differs from person to person, culture to culture – there’s just no limit to the myriad of possibilities that brings a ray of light into our lives. This is why LG joined forces with up-and-coming director Jackson Tisi and budding artists around the globe for its Life’s Good Film Project. After all, there’s no better medium than the artistic voice of young souls to explore the multifaceted perspectives that shape our world and the future.

Life's Good Film with Jackson Tisi

This year, LG called on 531 young auteurs from 33 countries to capture the peoples, cultures and landscapes around the world that highlight the good in life. Tisi led the way with his exceptional creative vision, weaving the clips together into a vibrant 20-minute documentary short. The impactful collaboration was shaped around LG’s optimistic message, Life’s Good, but the story is told in the voice of the young visionaries through the lens of their own unique and powerful experiences, delivering a colorful variety to the project both in terms of subject matter and aesthetic visuals.

The film delves into the multitude conditions of the human existence within six chapters that embody a unique element of a good life – from the beauty of nature, the vitality of physical movement, personal growth nurtured in times of solitude to the togetherness and warmth of a close-knit community. The final chapter depicts today’s young generation united in celebration of life, eloquently bringing the film to a close. This emotionally uplifting message – and the amazing depth and range of visual sensations that it accompanies – was lauded by several film industry outlets.

The Life’s Good Film, delivering LG’s brand message, but also gaining sympathy from all around the world in the creative and sophisticated manners, was named a winning entry in well-established film festivals such as the Indie Short Fest and the Dreamachine International Film Festival. The New York International Film Awards and Toronto Independent Film Festival nominated the entry as a finalist and the San Francisco Indie Short Festival named it second-finalist, a rare feat among brand collaboration films. The much-praised film will be reaching a wider public audience with official screenings at the Arpa International Film Festival, Creation International Film Festival, and the Oregon Documentary Film Festival in the coming weeks.

Proving That Indoor Comfort and Sustainability Can Coexist

Becoming more sustainable means a commitment to using fewer resources, creating less waste, and doing everything possible to ensure a healthy planet for future generations. LG Electronics embraces this challenge and continues to take steps to reduce its environmental impact through an extensive program of ESG management. Along with its ambitious Zero Carbon 2030 initiative and goal to transition completely to renewable energy by 2050, LG offers innovative solutions that can help consumers to live more in balance with nature today.

A picture of LG’s booth at Korea Energy Show 2021.

LG recently had an opportunity to demonstrate its eco-conscious exhibit for its state-of-the art HVAC solutions at Korea Energy Show 2021, South Korea’s largest annual energy exhibition. Instead of wasting new resources on a temporary exhibit, LG used prefabricated shipping containers and adopted recycled materials such as wood waste to create a unique, visually interesting space.

Exhibiting a complete range of highly efficient LG HVAC solutions suitable for homes, offices, schools as well as other indoor environments, the highlight of the exhibit was a new commercial air conditioner made more efficient via an AI engine.

LG’s latest HVAC solutions leverage smart technologies to help create better indoor air quality while simultaneously cutting energy consumption. LG’s ceiling-mounted 1 Way Cassette with comprehensive air purification system cleans, cools and heats the air to keep the home comfortable all year around.

Other LG innovations on exhibit at the show included the LG Energy Storage System (ESS) and Building Energy Control (BECON), a powerful duo that together create a total energy management solution for businesses. Also on display was the LG 4-Way DUAL Vane Cassette which employs UVnano technology and an antibacterial drain pan to enhance the hygiene of the unit and the airflow produced.1

LG showcased its first GHP Hybrid Heat Pump system air conditioner, a cost-effective option for educational and governmental facilities. LG’s hybrid solution combines the advantages of electric- and gas-powered climate control systems to deliver superb performance while reducing the cost of cooling and heating.2

To further minimizing its footprint, LG moved to using recycled materials for the packaging of the outdoor units of its system air conditioners. Instead of using expanded polystyrene in its packaging, LG opted for expanded polypropylene as it offers improved cushioning and protection for its products. LG estimates that switching to reusable expanded polypropylene for all its AC packaging will cut its annual paper usage by 85 tons and polystyrene usage by 19 tons.

After the conclusion of Korea Energy Show 2021, LG donated the exhibition containers to Habitat Korea, the South Korean branch of the global nonprofit Habitat for Humanity. The repurposed containers will be utilized by the organization as a dedicated education center.

As LG’s efficient, eco-responsible HVAC solutions demonstrate, creating a healthy, comfortable indoor environment doesn’t have to come at the expense of sustainability. With innovations that carefully consider the needs of its customers and the well-being of the planet, LG is helping to bring about a brighter, better tomorrow.

1 Testing conducted by FITI Testing and Research Institute verified the LG DUAL Vane Cassette resulted in the reduction of 99 percent of Staphylococcus bacteria and colon bacillus.
2 Based on cooling/heating load of 52HP (GHP 32HP and Multi V 20HP) and the proper energy source (electricity or gas), the LG GHP Hybrid Heat Pump can save up to 28 percent of the energy cost (electricity and gas combined) compared to the energy cost of using Multi V alone. Operation cost may vary depending on load conditions, climate and other environmental factors.

Solar Plays Pivotal Role on LG’s Road to Zero Carbon

Companies and manufacturers around the world are increasing their efforts to move away from fossil fuel-based means of production to renewable energy. LG Electronics is in an enviable position because it is one of the biggest producers of solar panels in the world. As such, LG has committed to achieving zero negative environmental impact and reducing carbon emissions in the production phase by 50 percent compared to 2017 figures by 2030.

As a key part of its commitment to transition completely to renewable energy by 2050, LG Electronics completed the construction of a roof-type solar power plant at its production facility in Rayong, Thailand. Established in 1997, the Rayong plant is one of company’s key manufacturing hubs for LG home appliance products. The plant is equipped with 9,400 solar panels with a capacity of 4.2 MW (megawatt) and began collecting solar energy last month.

This business was launched last year in partnership with several partners including global investment company BECIS (Berkeley Energy Commercial Industrial Solutions). Under the mutually beneficial structure of a power purchase agreement (PPA), LG expects to produce high-quality renewable energy based on its advanced technology and reduce facility costs by receiving a steady stream of energy at below market price.

A close-up view of the LG solar panels installed on the roof of LG’s Rayong plant in Thailand.

“As an important production base for producing LG’s washing machines and air conditioners, we are fully committed to achieve the RE100 goals of converting to 100 percent renewable energy sources,” said Jaesung Lee, president of LG Electronics Thailand. “By installing the solar panels on the unused space of the factory roof, we were able to reduce the overall cost of construction while maximizing space utilization.”

Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey

LG is already generating solar energy at its manufacturing site in Noida, India, which is equipped with solar modules with a capacity of 3.2 MW. LG’s North American corporate headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, USA has made solar a key component of its goal to convert all energy used in production and North American offices into 100 percent renewable energy by the end of 2021.

These are just some of the examples of the initiatives LG is taking to reach its sustainability goals around the world to create a better world for all. And there’s more to come…

Enhancing the Driving Experience With Augmented Reality

Over the years, the growth in connected cars and the development of autonomous driving technology has led to vehicle software becoming more critical in the operation of a car. As vehicles get smarter, automakers are finding themselves focusing not only on the hardware but also on software solutions to make the on-road experience not only more convenient but safer as well.

In line with this evolution, LG Electronics has been accelerating the commercialization of its augmented reality (AR) software solution for vehicles. This advanced software is designed to offer real-time assistance to drivers, helping consumers accurately assess driving conditions to keep themselves, and others, safe on the roads.

The software helps drivers better judge driving conditions by projecting key visual information – current speed, relative position of nearby vehicles and pedestrians, best route to the selected destination, etc. – onto the inside of the vehicle’s windshield as a head-up display (HUD) so drivers never have to take their eyes off the road, while still making the information viewable on the In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system’s bright, clear display.

The four factors comprising LG AR Software Solution and the two systems that make it possible.

A number of LG’s core technologies are integrated into the company’s advanced AR solution. Vehicle Sensor Fusion, analyzes ADAS information collected by the car’s front camera as well as a real-time map, GPS and vehicle-movement data to provide more accurate information on the IVI display. Human Machine Interface (HMI) Framework assists in the rendering of visual information while Driving Data Prediction compensates for sensor latency by integrating camera images of the external environment with vehicle data in real time. LG’s AR solution is offered to automakers as a package that includes the SDK (software development kit), UI (user interface) Composer and Simulation Tool that not only makes it easy to integrate into customers’ vehicle software platforms but easy to maintain and update as well.

LG’s Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company produces navigation systems, instrument clusters, head-up displays, HMI solutions and IVI systems, among others. These capabilities enable the company to adapt and respond to the diverse needs of its automotive customers, including unique requirements related to vehicle platform policies and purchasing strategies. AR is a key pillar of the ongoing digitization of the automotive industry and LG’s offering in this space is a big evolutionary step forward, one that will elevate the driving experience and make our roads safer for everyone.
