LG First in World to Receive New “Common Criteria Certification” in V2X Device Category

A Trusted Supplier of Vehicle Solutions, Company Earns
Security Certification for Its Transceiver Module for Volkswagen

A smart car equipped with LG’s VW transceiver module detects pedestrians crossing the road

SEOUL, Aug. 26, 2024 — LG Electronics’ (LG) Vehicle to Everything (V2X) solution for Volkswagen has received the world’s first Common Criteria (CC) certification for security stability in the V2X device category. The certification reinforces LG’s leading position in the global automotive components market and highlights its advanced capabilities in vehicle cybersecurity, an area that continues to grow in importance in the connected car era.

The recipient of the new CC certification, LG’s VW Transceiver Module, is a telematics component designed exclusively for Volkswagen’s internal combustion engine-specific MQB platform. An internationally recognized standard for IT product security, CC certification indicates that a device provides comprehensive protection against unauthorized access or interference. The module was rigorously evaluated by DEKRA, an accredited laboratory for CC certification, successfully meeting CC’s stringent security standards and earning an Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 2+ rating from Spain’s National Cryptologic Centre (CCN).

V2X technology allows vehicles to communicate with systems, devices and technologies in the surrounding area, including other vehicles (V2V), traffic infrastructure (V2I) and, via smartphones, pedestrians (V2P). Without robust security, V2X devices and networks could be compromised by hackers, potentially leading to traffic congestion, accidents or data breaches. LG is proactive in addressing V2X security threats, ensuring that its advanced telematics components comply with Europe’s increasingly strict security regulations, thereby providing peace of mind to drivers and passengers.

LG is committed to meeting the highest standards for vehicle security, and will continue to provide competitive auto solutions that prioritize safety and reliability. After earning CC certification for its transceiver module for Volkswagen’s MQB platform, LG plans to achieve the same for its V2X solution intended for Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle platform within the year.

In addition to obtaining security certifications for its V2X solutions, LG is enhancing security across all areas of its automotive electronics business. In 2022, LG Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company received the Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange (TISAX) certification and, last February, gained Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) certification from TÜV Rheinland.

“By earning CC certification for the security of our V2X solution for Volkswagen, we have effectively demonstrated our superior component technology and security capabilities, both of which are key elements for success in the future mobility sector,” said Eun Seok-hyun, president of LG Vehicle component Solutions Company. “LG will continue to solidify its position in the global automotive parts market, delivering innovative, secure solutions that ensure safer roads for all.”

LG CEO William Cho Highlights Consistent Progress Towards Future Vision 2030

Driving Business Portfolio Innovation to Maximize the Potential of Key Business Areas
and Advance B2B, Platform-Based and Emerging Ventures

A picture of LG CEO William Cho talking on stage at the investor forum

SEOUL, Aug. 21, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) is rapidly evolving into a “Smart Life Solution Company” by leveraging its decades of customer insight, manufacturing expertise and technological prowess as a leader in home appliances. As part of its mid- to long-term strategy, “Future Vision 2030,” LG is committed to ongoing transformation and growth.

On August 21, LG hosted an investor forum at LG Sciencepark in Seoul, bringing together domestic and international investors and analysts. During the event, CEO William Cho outlined the company’s progress and strategic direction since the announcement of Future Vision 2030 last year, emphasizing key achievements. The forum was also streamed live on LG’s YouTube channel.

In addition to CEO William Cho, the event was attended by CFO Kim Chang-tae, CSO Lee Sam-soo and other top executives responsible for key business areas such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), webOS content & services and subscription business. The event aimed to communicate the progress and plans of LG’s mid- to long-term strategy directly to the market, ensuring greater transparency.

Following the announcement of the 2030 Future Vision and the shareholders’ meeting, LG continues to engage with the market and stakeholders through direct communication from the CEO and key business leaders, as demonstrated in this investor forum.

Under the Future Vision 2030 plan, LG aims to become a “Smart Life Solution Company” by connecting and enhancing customer experiences across various living spaces, including homes, commercial environments, mobility and virtual platforms. To achieve this, the company plans to accelerate the transformation of its business portfolio towards a more future-oriented model. The goal is to achieve the “Triple Seven” targets: a 7 percent average growth rate, 7 percent operating profit and an enterprise multiple (EV/EBITDA) of 7.

At the event, LG shared its interim financial progress under Future Vision 2030, revealing an 8 percent increase in revenue, a 6 percent operating profit and a fourfold growth in EV/EBITDA compared to the previous year, based on the first half of this year’s business performance (excluding LG Innotek).

“Over the past year, we have been steadily laying the foundation for achieving our future vision, and we take pride in creating ‘structural changes’ and ‘sustainable outcomes’ in various areas,” said CEO Cho. “With strong confidence and a sense of responsibility, we will continue to advance towards our goals.”

Four Strategic Directions for Business Portfolio Innovation
CEO Cho detailed LG’s approach to business portfolio innovation, focusing on four key directions: maximizing the full potential of existing key businesses, expanding platform-based service models, accelerating the growth of B2B and fostering New-to-LGE businesses.

The first direction of maximizing the full potential of current businesses involves a strategy to overcome the limitations of mature core businesses, such as home appliances and TVs. This includes integrating subscription services into its home appliance offerings and expanding direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales channels, providing customers with more choices and enhanced experiences.

CEO Cho explained that these efforts are leading to steady growth and profit generation in core businesses, which serve as cash cows for the company. Despite a double-digit decline in the Korean home appliance market, LG’s domestic appliance sales are on the rise, driven by the creation of new demand through subscription services. In addition, overseas home appliance sales have grown more than 1.5 times faster than the market average over the past three years, driven by expanded product and price lines and D2C sales.

Second, expanding platform-based service models focuses on leveraging the hundreds of millions of LG products sold worldwide as a platform to generate revenue from content, advertising and services. A prime example is LG Home Entertainment Company’s TV business, which aims to accelerate the webOS advertising and content business with the goal of transforming the company into a media and entertainment platform powerhouse. Since 2018, the annual growth rate of the webOS platform-based advertising and content business has reached 64 percent.

In terms of accelerating the growth of B2B businesses, LG is achieving significant results in areas such as vehicle components, HVAC and smart factories. These advancements are closely aligned with market inflection points like digitalization and electrification. LG aims to increase the B2B share of its total revenue to over 45 percent by 2030. The B2B share, which was 27 percent in 2021, has already risen to 35 percent in the first half of this year.

LG’s vehicle component solutions business has secured an order backlog exceeding KRW 100 trillion (USD 74 billion), with sales of high-value products like digital cockpits growing rapidly. The company is also expanding its global production footprint to support this growth. In the HVAC sector, LG leads the high-efficiency market with its advanced inverter and heat pump technologies, and it is actively targeting the cooling systems market for AI data centers, where demand is surging. LG also has plans to expand its smart factory business into industries with rising factory automation needs, such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and food & beverages.

The company continues to invest in promising new business areas that will serve as the foundation for future growth. In the commercial robotics sector, LG is focusing on securing AI-driven, software-defined robotics capabilities. For the electric vehicle charging business, LG is collaborating with leading global partners to seize business opportunities.

Portfolio Innovation Yields Emerging Unicorn Ventures
LG also highlighted the success and growth potential of key businesses that have become core engines of the company’s future growth, showcasing significant results from its portfolio innovation.

“Inspired by the term ‘unicorn’ used to describe ventures valued at over KRW 1 trillion (USD 740 million) in the market, we refer to new business models generating annual sales of over KRW 1 trillion (USD 740 million) as ‘unicorn businesses,’” said CEO Cho. “Our home appliance subscription service surpassed KRW 1 trillion (USD 740 million) in annual sales last year, securing its status as a ‘unicorn business.’ Additionally, several seed businesses, which are expected to become the next unicorns in the near future, are accelerating their growth.”

Home Appliance Subscription Business Achieves Unicorn Status
LG is pioneering a paradigm shift in the home appliance business by combining services with its home appliances through a subscription model. Unlike traditional product-centric models that generate one-time sales, the subscription model maintains ongoing customer relationships, offering optimized care services post-purchase, thereby generating continuous revenue.

Last year, the subscription business achieved KRW 1.134 trillion (approximately USD 840 million) in annual revenue, marking a 33 percent growth over the previous year and securing its place as a unicorn business. This growth is accelerating, with revenue expected to rise by nearly 60 percent this year to exceed KRW 1.8 trillion (USD 1.3 billion).

The rapid growth of LG’s home appliance subscription business is driven by its ability to meet diverse customer needs. Customers can lower their initial purchase burden and maintain their appliances in top condition with expert care services for the desired duration, with free services provided during the subscription period. Customer responses highlight the high value of the subscription business, with its share of LG’s domestic home appliance sales rising from 15 percent last year to over 20 percent this year.

webOS-Based Advertising & Content Business Set to Become the Next Unicorn
LG’s webOS-based advertising and content business leverages millions of devices worldwide as a platform to generate additional revenue streams. This year, revenue is expected to exceed KRW 1 trillion (USD 740 million), a fourfold increase compared to 2021. To sustain this rapid growth, LG is focusing on expanding its customer base, diversifying revenue models and strengthening business capabilities.

In platform businesses, the more devices that use the platform, the larger the business scale becomes. LG has sold approximately 220 million smart TVs over the past decade. In addition, LG licenses its webOS to external companies lacking their own operating systems, with non-LG brands having sold over 10 million webOS TVs. The webOS platform is also expanding beyond TVs to include automotive infotainment and smart appliances, with the company securing leading global OEMs as clients for its in-vehicle infotainment systems.

LG provides a variety of content via webOS, operating revenue models based on advertising and services. A prime example is LG Channels, a free, ad-supported streaming service offering over 3,800 channels in 29 countries. LG plans to diversify its services into high-growth areas such as gaming, personalized shopping and Transactional Video On Demand.

To bolster its webOS platform capabilities, LG plans to invest over KRW 1 trillion (USD 740 million) by 2027. The company will continue collaborating with more than 4,000 global content partners and expand tailored advertising solutions through its data analytics subsidiary, Alphonso.

Chiller Business Targets AI Data Center Cooling Market: On Track to Become a Unicorn in Three Years
LG’s HVAC business offers a broad portfolio, ranging from residential air conditioners to commercial systems for large buildings, schools, public institutions and industrial facilities. This is one of LG’s fastest-growing core businesses, driven by market trends like decarbonization and electrification.

The chiller business, which provides cooling solutions for large buildings, has seen new opportunities as global tech giants increase demand for data centers amid the AI boom. Over the past three years, LG’s chiller business has achieved an average annual growth rate of over 15 percent, with overseas sales more than doubling during the same period.

LG plans to leverage its extensive experience in supplying chillers to power plants, data centers and other facilities, along with its high-efficiency core technologies, to actively target the data center cooling market. In addition, LG is preparing to commercialize new solutions, such as liquid immersion cooling, which are gaining traction in the market.

“By 2030, 50 Percent of Total Sales and 75 Percent of Operating Profit Will Come from B2B, Platform-Based and New Businesses”
To achieve its mid- to long-term goals outlined in Future Vision 2030, LG will consistently drive business portfolio innovation. The company aims to generate 50 percent of total sales and 75 percent of operating profit from three key focus areas: expanding platform-based services, accelerating the growth of B2B and nurturing New-to-LGE businesses.

“These goals are rapidly becoming a reality,” said CEO Cho. “We will ensure that LG’s new value proposition is recognized by all stakeholders, securing sustainable growth and profitability over the long term.”

SEOUL, Aug. 15, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) is introducing its brand-new stick vacuum cleaning solution, LG CordZero™ All-in-One Tower Combi, alongside its newest ‘all-in-one’ robot vacuum and mop at IFA 2024. The All-In-One Tower Combi redefines storage, charging and style while making everyday cleaning simpler and more efficient by combining the CordZero A9X stick vacuum with the CordZero R5 robot vacuum. The company’s latest robot vacuum and mop features a comprehensive system that handles floor cleaning, mopping, dust emptying, water refilling and automatic mop washing.

Streamlined Cleaning with the All-in-One Tower Combi

The innovative All-in-One Tower Combi solution features the Dual Auto Empty function, which automatically empties the dustbins of both the stick and robot vacuums. When docked, both devices are charged to ensure they are always ready to clean. The sleek, compact docking station serves as a central hub for all vacuuming needs, taking up minimal space and even featuring a UVC LED to help prevent bacteria from growing inside the disposable dust bag.1

The CordZero A9X incorporates LG’s Smart Inverter Motor, designed to provide powerful and reliable cleaning performance every time. The motor’s rapid spinning action generates a strong suction that picks up dirt, dust and debris with ease. Moreover, the stick vacuum uses KOMPRESSOR™ technology, which compresses dirt and debris to increase bin capacity and reduce the frequency of emptying the dustbin. The vacuum also features Spray Mop for efficient mopping on hard floors.

For a thorough and efficient cleaning experience, the LG CordZero R5 robot vacuum is equipped with a mop that allows it to vacuum and mop simultaneously. This is facilitated by an automatic water supply system from the embedded water tank that keeps the mop wet, eliminating the need for frequent trips to a water source. What’s more, the robot vacuum employs a 360 LiDAR sensor to navigate obstacles and furniture, potentially preventing accidents like a fall down the stairs.2

Next-Generation Robot Vacuum with Extensive Cleaning Capabilities

LG is also bringing its ‘all-in-one’ robot vacuum and mop to the IFA show floor. This cutting-edge vacuum employs automatic mop cleaning and drying to reduce maintenance work and an automatic water supply system that fills and empties the water tank without user intervention.3 To ensure the vacuum stays clean and fresh without any hassle, the vacuum automatically dispenses the cleanser when washing the mop.

The advanced robot vacuum uses LiDAR to precisely map out routes and a front camera that works in unison with 3D and several other sensors, which recognize up to 96 objects, making obstacle navigation effortless. The robot vacuum effectively cleans dust with a powerful motor that delivers strong vacuum power of up to 10,000 pascals (Pa),4 while its rotating mop ensures thorough mopping by spinning at 180 revolutions per minute (rpm). The intelligent vacuum can even detect carpets, increasing suction power and lifting its mop to clean more effectively over these rougher surfaces.

To help consumers minimize odors from the product, LG has developed all-in-one robot vacuums that combat unpleasant odors from the wastewater after mop cleaning. This comprehensive cleaning solution automatically dispenses cleaner when washing the mop and dries it with hot air. This process reduces the formation of foul-smelling compounds, such as methyl mercaptan and dimethyl disulfide, in the water container storing used water after mopping by approximately 30 percent.5 Additionally, LG’s Secure Development Lifecycle (LG SDL) predicts and addresses security risks checked throughout every stage of product development.

“We have merged the cleaning and maintenance process into one to deliver the convenient and effortless user experience consumer’s desire,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We are fully committed to introducing a steady stream of innovative home appliances that exceed all expectations, with a strong focus on constantly redefining the seamless user experience.”

LG’s latest cleaning solutions, including the A9X All-in-One Tower Combi and robot vacuum and mop, among other home appliance solutions will be on display at the company’s IFA 2024 exhibition booth (Hall 18, Messe Berlin) in Berlin, Germany, from September 6-10.

1 Tested by KRIBS (Korea Research Institute of Bio Science) in accordance with LG protocol comparing the number of live bacteria in the All-in-One Tower’s dust bag after operating the UVC LED for two hours (Model number: VDS-ST**U**) at 23.0 degrees Celsius (±2.0 degrees Celsius) with a relative humidity of 45 percent (±5 percent). The All-in-One Tower’s dust bag was filled with simulated household dust (specified in IEC TS 62885-1 5.1) and bacteria (staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, pneumonia bacilli, escherichia coli-about 107 CFU per for each test bacteria) that was cultivated in a petri dish. The tested bacteria are located in nine representative locations on top of the dust. After operating the UVC LED for 2 hours, a comparison was made between the number of live bacteria with the un-treated chalet. The inhibition rate of bacterial growth may vary depending on actual environmental conditions.
2 360 LiDAR sensor scans the surroundings 6 times per second up to a radius of 8 meters. Depending on the actual environment and usage conditions, actual surroundings and the map may differ.
3 Automatic water filling and emptying feature is only available with the addition and the installation of the automatic water supply kit, which is sold separately. The installation type can be changed to automatic water supply with the addition of the automatic water supply kit. The installation service may require additional fees or services depending on the region.
4 According to tests conducted by the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL) on the all-in-one robot vacuum and mop (Model: R83*******) following Section 5.11 of the international standard IEC 62885-4:2020/AMD1:2023, the product was evaluated with an empty dustbin and a fully charged new battery. Using a specially manufactured adapter to connect the vacuum cleaner to the air data test equipment, the maximum suction power was measured under Turbo mode with direct drive movements, and the suction motor’s maximum vacuum level was recorded with the motor directly connected to the air data test equipment. Suction power (measured in watts) is calculated as the product of the observed vacuum (in kilopascal, kPa) and the airflow (in liters per second, /s) from the air data test equipment. The maximum vacuum level of 10,000 Pa for the suction motor refers to a sealed condition with an airflow of 0 /s. Suction power may vary depending on whether the rotating brush is attached and the testing environment, while the vacuum level may differ based on the measurement conditions.
5 According to tests conducted by accredited certification agency Intertek using LG’s specified criteria, the amount of methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide odors was compared with and without the use of the company’s robot vacuum cleaner maintenance solution. The test involved applying a solution of E. coli (approximately 104 colony-forming units per milliliter, CFU/ml) and approximately 12 milliliters of instant coffee dilution to the floor and then 10 minutes of mopping. Afterwards, the mop automatically washed and dried for 3 hours and the resulting wastewater was left in a 33-degree Celsius chamber for 7 days. Methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide are sulfur compounds with strong odors. The automatic mop cleaning function only operates after a robot vacuum, which has cleaned for more than 10 minutes, returns to its charging dock, with the cleaner then automatically dispensed during the final cleaning process. The frequency of the cleaner replenishment and sulfur compound odor alleviation effect may vary depending on the usage environment.

LG Unveils New Therma V™ R290 Monobloc Models With Advanced Compressor at IFA 2024

Company Expands the High-Efficiency Small-to-Medium Capacity Lineup to
Provide Stable Heating Performance to More European Households

A photo of the LG Therma V™ R290 Monobloc 7 and 9 kilowatt(kW) air-to-water heat pump (AWHP) set up in a residential outdoor space

SEOUL, Aug. 8, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) is unveiling its all-new Therma V™ R290 Monobloc 7- and 9-kilowatt (kW) air-to-water heat pumps (AWHP) at IFA 2024 in Berlin, Germany, from September 6-10. Following the successful launch of the large capacity models (12, 14, 16kW) at last year’s IFA, the new Therma V models come with an advanced compressor that unlocks greater efficiency and a more sophisticated design that blends seamlessly into the surroundings.

With the mandatory implementation of Nearly-Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) standards across Europe,1 AWHPs are gaining popularity for their ability to reduce carbon emissions and handle energy supply uncertainties. For new constructions, medium- and small-capacity models are more suitable, making LG’s new 7- and 9 kW models ideal for the European market. Additionally, LG is establishing an Air Solution Research and Development (R&D) Lab in Frankfurt, Germany, to develop high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions tailored to Europe’s diverse local climates.

Highly Efficient Operation
Proactively responding to tighter F-gas regulations2 and Europe’s preference shifting from traditional boilers to AWHPs, LG has adopted the R290 refrigerant for its Therma V R290 Monobloc. This natural refrigerant boasts a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3, far lower than the refrigerants commonly used in heating solutions. With an energy rating of A+++,3 this advanced solution reduces carbon emissions by up to 79 percent compared to conventional boilers by sourcing its energy from heat in the air.4 Customers upgrading to the Therma V can expect to increase their household energy efficiency significantly.5

The latest Therma V AWHP leverages LG’s advanced compressor to unlock new levels of energy efficiency and performance in colder climates. The lower positioning of the compression process helps ensure a more stable operation and smaller energy bills, while the system enables a water output of up to 75 degrees Celsius, even when it is minus 15 degrees Celsius outside.

Courtesy of the all-new compressor, both AWHP models operate at a quiet 49 dB(A) at 7kW and 50 dB(A) at 9kW.6,7 LG’s Shaft Through structure enhances stability and reduces friction, thereby minimizing noise and vibration, particularly during low-load operation. What’s more, the upgraded biomimetic innovations all contribute to the fan’s quiet operation.

A More Sophisticated Design
Therma V R290 Monobloc features a sleek one-fan design that effortlessly harmonizes with various home designs and building exteriors. The outer casing of LG’s latest AWHP solution uses a sophisticated black tone that complements any color, while the unit’s grille features a distinctive wave pattern and understated dark grey finish. Its compact design allows it to fit under most windows without obstructing the view, making it a practical, aesthetically pleasing addition to any property.

Smart and Simple Integration
LG’s new AWHPs are designed to seamlessly integrate with various indoor units through simplified installations, enhanced flexibility and customized options – control, hydro and combi units – that cater to different installation environments. The streamlined design guarantees a more efficient, hassle-free set up, while the company’s Building Energy Control (BECON) cloud lets the installer or service partner update its firmware remotely, saving time and effort.8 Additionally, the new models offer easy and convenient control and energy monitoring through LG’s ThinQ™, creating an integrated Home Energy Platform with Energy Storage System (ESS).

“LG’s latest Therma V R290 Monobloc offers Europeans a broader range of capacity options while delivering enhanced performance and user comfort,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “LG will continue leveraging its differentiated competitiveness in high-efficiency energy technologies and key component solutions to offer a product lineup tailored to regional needs.”
