Giving the Gift of Sight

Karein Roshni, a CSR initiative by LG Electronics India

Visual impairment can affect one’s quality of life in countless ways. In India, blindness and vision loss impact around 4.8 million people1 of which approximately 350,000 suffer from some form of corneal disease.2 A major cause of blindness worldwide, corneal diseases have long had a disproportionate impact on India’s poorer rural communities where the high cost of treatment is beyond the means of most.

A man with a corneal disease is being treated by a medical professional

Committed to making life better for all, LG Electronics has been working with one of the most respected eye hospitals in India to provide those in need with corneal grafts and transplants – the only effective means of treating corneal blindness. Through its Karein Roshni (meaning “to bring light”) initiative, LG’s partnership with Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital and the Sankara Eye Foundation (SEF) has so far resulted in 1,000 successful cataract surgeries and 800 more for people unable to afford the high cost of the procedure.

LG has been sponsoring eye operations for people who cannot afford them since 2017. Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital is highly respected throughout the country and has been helping patients from across north India for more than a century. SEF, a not-for-profit organization with a strong commitment towards curable blindness, has set up 10 Super Speciality Sankara Eye Hospitals across 7 states of the country.

“Corneal blindness has become the second-leading cause, after cataracts, of serious loss of vision, and we’re seeing up to 25,000 new cases every year,” said hospital executive director Dr. Umang Mathur. “We are very thankful to LG for its generous support in sponsoring eye surgery for people who could not otherwise pay for it.”

A doctor providing the proper medical care needed by giving a patient a thorough eye exam

One of the reasons behind the increase of corneal blindness in India is the lack of access to proper medical care in the country’s more remote regions. Other contributing factors are the lack of cornea donors, the cost of surgery and of maintaining the necessary infrastructure for keeping corneas viable for transplant, and the fact that many times, sight problems go undiagnosed until it is too late.

Through this partnership, LG India has already had a positive impact on the lives of many Indians, including Anil, a farmer from the Bulandshehar district in Uttar Pradesh. Anil nearly lost his livelihood and his ability to care for his family when his vision failed due to corneal disease. But thanks to LG’s Karein Roshni program, he was able to get the operation he needed, regain his sight and return to working the land and providing for his loved ones.

“I am and will always be grateful to LG for bringing the gift of vision back into my life, and for helping so many others like me,” Anil said.

LG India has shared Anil’s uplifting story as part of its efforts to raise awareness of the issue of corneal disease and to mobilize people to lend their support. In a video that has already amassed more than two million views, Anil talks about the time he first noticed something was wrong, the dark days when his vision loss almost took everything from him, receiving treatment at Dr. Shroff’s hospital and getting his sight, and his life, back again.

Patients and doctors gather for a group photo to celebrate the success of LG India's Karein Roshni program for the poorer citizens suffering visual impairment

Lending a hand where it is needed most is an intrinsic part of LG’s culture and its ongoing mission to ensure that “Life’s Good” for everyone. Through Karein Roshni, LG India is helping to provide visually-impaired citizens with the care they need, bringing light back into their world, and with it, the hope for a better future.

LG’s webOS 6.0 Smart TV Platform Designed for How Viewers Consume Content Today

New Home Screen, Magic Remote and Functionality Bring LG TV
Owners the Most Intuitive and Enjoyable User Experience Yet

SEOUL, Jan. 8, 2021 — LG Electronics (LG) today announces the introduction of webOS 6.0 for its 2021 OLED, QNED Mini LED, NanoCell and UHD smart TVs. Paired with the new Magic Remote, the latest version of the company’s acclaimed smart TV platform offers viewers a more enjoyable and intuitive content discovery experience. The upgraded LG ThinQ AI in webOS 6.0 supports new voice commands for both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, making TV management and searching across streaming services, internet and broadcast channels easier than ever before.

Users familiar with webOS will immediately notice the attractively updated home screen redesigned for enhanced usability and to meet the needs of viewers’ changing content consumption habits. The New Home screen provides faster access to the most frequently used apps and streamlines content discovery with recommendations based on the user’s preferences and viewing history. All displayed full-screen to show preferred content and related information at one glance, the New Home acts as a central hub for settings and the greater webOS ecosystem.

Beyond the new premium design, Magic Remote offers simpler controls when using voice recognition with LG’s multi-AI offerings of LG ThinQ, Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Simple to navigate, slick, easy to hold and use, the new Magic Remote offers more user-friendly features including faster connections between the TV and other devices and hot keys for accessing popular content providers such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Magic Tap, a one-touch NFC function on the Magic Remote, provides instant access to a host of exciting viewing possibilities. By simply touching an NFC-enabled smartphone to the remote, viewers can share content from their phones to the TV or vice versa. Users can view content stored on their mobile phones on their LG TVs while continuing to use their favorite smartphone apps and features.

Leveraging the latest in AI technology, TV voice controls and Magic Remote, all viewers have to do to get the info they need is speak up. Magic Explorer, an enhanced version of LG’s Magic Link, delivers informative content related to what’s showing on screen so viewers can learn more about the actors, locations and other items of interest in the movies and shows they’re watching. The content dependent feature also delivers the easiest and friendliest shopping experience for products appearing across select broadcast channels and LG TV services including Live TV, Gallery, Settings and TV Guide by changing the color of the cursor whenever Magic Explorer has information to share.

What’s more, the new Next Picks feature analyzes viewers’ preferences to discover more content suited to their tastes. Using viewing history data, Next Picks recommends two live programs from broadcast or set-top box offerings as well as one VOD title or app that viewers will find most to their liking, saving viewers the time and hassle of finding what to watch next.

“The latest version of our user-friendly open TV platform webOS 6.0 represents the most significant update since we first introduced webOS in 2014,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “With the new edition of webOS, LG is demonstrating its commitment of offering services, products and technologies that respond to the needs and wants of our valued customers.”

SEOUL and MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. Jan. 7, 2021 — LG Electronics (LG) and Alphonso today announced a significant investment by LG in Alphonso to bring together the two TV industry leaders’ technologies and innovations to LG’s smart TV lineup. With this investment of nearly USD 80 million, LG will become Alphonso’s largest investor with a controlling stake of more than 50 percent.

LG has made understanding customer tastes and consumer trends one of its highest priorities as part of its digital transformation strategy to deliver better customized services. LG plans to utilize Alphonso software and services – including Alphonso’s data analytics, media planning and activation, and Video AI capabilities – with its broad range of home entertainment products. Alphonso’s combined offerings will enrich consumer services including content recommendations and LG’s own streaming service, LG Channels, to create a robust owned and operated first-screen, cross-device advertising platform with integrated analytics platform for LG TVs and the smart TV marketplace as a whole.

This is Alphonso’s first investment round since its Series A financing of USD 5.6 million in 2017, led by Manifest Investment Partners. Alphonso will continue to operate as an independent business under its current brand and leadership based in Silicon Valley.

“Our investment in Alphonso is a key component of our digital transformation strategy focusing on AI, big data and cloud to fundamentally change how consumers interact with their devices,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “With Alphonso’s TV data analysis capabilities, LG will be able to better fulfill consumers’ needs by providing even more customized services and content to consumers. We are proud to welcome Alphonso to the LG family.”

“LG and Alphonso have a shared vision for advancing the smart TV ecosystem through innovative software and services oriented toward modern new consumer experiences on one end, and highly flexible, lucrative advertising, planning, and measurement offerings for brands, agencies, and broadcasters on the other,” said Ashish Chordia, founder and CEO of Alphonso. “Becoming part of LG Electronics gives Alphonso the backing of one of the world’s leaders in home entertainment products, with access to a massive global inventory of connected TV screens. We can now maximize our mutual impact on the TV marketplace as we bring our products together and deliver immense value for the ecosystem.”

A woman is knocking on the glass window of the oven of InstaView® Range to see inside

SEOUL, Dec. 30, 2020Coming to CES® 2021, the new InstaView® Range with Air Sous Vide from LG Electronics (LG) will change home cooking as we know it today. The complete cooking solution also features LG’s Air Fry mode, InstaView oven door and a range of smart functions for a healthy and convenient culinary life at home.

With the company’s innovative Air Sous Vide mode, the stylish range cooks food perfectly every time for meals that look and taste like they’ve been prepared by a professional every time. With precise low temperature and airflow control, vacuum sealed foods are able to lock in maximum flavor and aroma to elevate dishes to succulent new heights. LG Air Sous Vide can consistently maintain any temperature between 100 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit (38 to 96 degrees Celsius) for up to 48 hours without water, which results in more consistent dishes that take up less counter space to prepare.

With LG InstaView technology, tapping twice on the oven’s glass door automatically turns on an interior light to make visually checking the progress inside a cinch. And thanks to EasyClean®, users can maintain the cleanliness of the oven and the cooktop* with no effort, no chemicals in just 10 minutes using only the power of pure water. The range also features LG’s ProBake® Convection technology for quick and thorough cooking without preheating while Air Fry delivers flavorful fried treats using significantly less oil than deep frying.

For even more convenience, the LG range can be controlled and monitored using the ThinQ™ app connected to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa smart speakers. And LG partners SideChef, Innit, Drop, and Tovala offer helpful culinary inspiration through the hundreds of easy-to-follow recipes on their apps. Once the user has selected a recipe, cooking instructions are sent to the oven which then sets the appropriate cooking mode and temperature. With Drop and a smart Thermomix, making pizza at home is a no-brainer with ThinQ controlling the mixer settings and LG InstaView Range preheating automatically so as soon as the dough is rolled and toppings topped, the oven is good to go. And heating frozen meals from brands such as Nestlé and Kraft Heinz is as simple as scanning a barcode with Scan to Cook.

For even more added value, the new range supports Proactive Customer Care, LG’s AI service solution. With just a smartphone and the ThinQ app, users can maintain the optimal performance and efficiency of compatible LG appliances for years to come.

“The 2021 LG InstaView Range integrates our most innovative cooking technologies which we’re excited to introduce at next month’s CES,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We’re confident customers will find Air Sous Vide easier and more convenient to use than traditional water sous vide but the real vote of confidence will be in how much better the food tastes.”

The 2021 LG InstaView Range with Air Sous Vide will be on display in LG’s virtual exhibition booth during CES 2021 starting January 11.

Mini LED TV: The Ongoing Evolution of LCD TV Technology

Until recently, the term “Mini LED” would have been unfamiliar to all but the most ardent of TV technology buffs. Although talked about in tech circles for years, the term has only just started to enter the wider public consciousness, spurred by the fact that several TV manufacturers are now either showcasing, rolling out or communicating their intention to launch TV products with this feature.

In this article, we will take a look at what’s behind this growing interest in Mini LED TVs.

An image showing LG's TVs by structure, from CRT TVs to backlit LCD TVs and then self-lit OLED TVs

OLED’s dominance in the premium TV category is primarily due to its self-lighting pixels, independent dimming control and lack of backlighting for an incredibly thin profile unmatched by any other high-end TV technology. The LED-backlit LCD TV space, however, remains more competitive. Within this more accessibly-priced market, LG and other TV makers continue to develop a variety of technologies in an effort to bring consumers TVs with better picture quality primarily focusing on improving contrast and color reproduction. The emergence of Mini LED as the next step in the evolution of LCD TV is a direct consequence of this R&D effort.

Next Level Contrast: The Evolution of Backlight

The two directions of evolution for LCD TVs, one being via backlight and the other via LCD Cell

Backlight TVs have been evolving their light source technologies with advancements like CCFL (Cold-Cathode Fluorescent Lamp), Edge LED or Direct LED, offering improved performance. Also, technologies like Local Dimming and FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) are increasingly more advanced ways to express better contrast.

Mini LED technology “miniaturizes” the TV’s light source, making it much smaller. The smaller size allows manufacturers to pack more LEDs in the same TV screen size for increased brightness compared to regular LCD TVs. Also, having more dimming zones allows for more precise control of that brightness. As such, a Mini LED TV can achieve deeper blacks and a higher contrast ratio than other types of LED TV. Scenes both light and dark, benefit greatly from these performance upgrades, appearing more real.

LCD Cell: The Evolution of Color

As LCD technology evolved, it offered better and higher resolution and color. Quantum dot and NanoCell technologies are examples of ways to increase color performance. By developing the combined Quantum Dot NanoCell Technology, LG has taken the best of both quantum dot and NanoCell to further enhance the ability to represent and create outstanding color in an LCD TV.

And LG combined the best LCD light source with the best color enhancement technologies, by creating LG QNED Mini LED TV.

An image showing LG's most advanced LCD TVs with the new backlit LG QNED Mini LED TV second to only LG's self-lit OLED TVs

LG’s new, flagship 86-inch 8K model featuring Mini LED technology comes with a backlight unit composed of almost 30,000 tiny LEDs and nearly 2,500 dimming blocks, for outstanding brightness and an impressive 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, unheard of performance for an LCD TV.1

With 8K OLED offering self-lit pixels that provide perfect black, infinite contrast over 100 million subpixels, no current display technology is the equal of OLED.2 However, Mini LED offers the best picture quality of any LCD TV to date and represents a compelling new option for consumers seeking to upgrade their viewing experience.

LG to Unveil Company’s First QNED Mini LED TV at Virtual CES 2021

With Up to Nearly 30K Tiny LEDs, Outstanding Peak Brightness and
Ultra-High Contrast, LG’s Latest Raises the Ante in LCD TVs

LG 8K QNED TV with Mini LED backlight delivers a range of colors on its screen with incredible accuracy and much deeper blacks

SEOUL, Dec. 29, 2020 — LG Electronics (LG) will introduce its first-ever QNED Mini LED TVs at the all virtual CES® 2021 as its top-of-the-line offering among LG’s 2021 premium LCD TV lineup. LG’s newest TVs represent a giant leap forward in LCD TV picture quality. Thanks to quantum dot and NanoCell technologies with Mini LEDs as the light source, brightness and contrast are far superior to that of conventional LCD televisions. The 2021 lineup includes 10 new 4K and 8K models covering a wide range of large screen sizes up to 86 inches.

With OLED at the pinnacle of LG’s TV offerings with its self-lit pixels and independent dimming control, the arrival of LG’s QNED Mini LED TVs offer a compelling option for consumers. Thanks to a new panel structure enhanced by LG’s advanced Mini LED backlighting, these TVs deliver a truly immersive viewing experience in the LCD space. As the first TVs to combine quantum dot and NanoCell in one product, LG QNED TVs produce incredibly accurate colors while the advanced LED backlight offers better contrast and deeper blacks for images of exceptional vibrancy and realism. And with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, these TVs render motion smoothly and more naturally.

LG’s innovative Mini LED backlighting comprises up to almost 30,000 tiny LEDs that produce incredible peak brightness and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 when paired with up to nearly 2,500 dimming zones and advanced local dimming technology.* This results in excellent HDR image quality with outstanding contrast and blacks, a wide color gamut and incredible color accuracy. For stunningly lifelike images that seem to shed the confines of the screen and enter the user’s space, it’s not hard to see why LG QNED Mini LED is the new LCD TV to beat.

“Our new QNED series is a premium home entertainment option that expands and improves the LCD TV space and gives consumers another terrific viewing choice,” said Nam Ho-jun, senior vice president of R&D at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “These TVs deliver an experience that set them apart from other LCD TVs and speak to our commitment to innovation and pushing the standard forward.”

LG’s top-of-the-line 86-inch 8K QNED TV will be on display in LG’s virtual exhibition booth during CES 2021 starting January 11.

SEOUL, Dec. 28, 2020 — At next month’s first virtual CES, LG Electronics (LG) will unveil new InstaView® Door-in-Door® refrigerators that boast upgraded features and design innovations for improved user convenience. The sleek refrigerator sports a larger glass panel for its InstaView Door-in-Door system while UVnano™ technology is featured in the built-in water dispenser for enhanced hygiene while InstaView voice recognition takes hands-free convenience to a whole new level in the kitchen.

Loved by consumers around the world for its ability to enhance user convenience, LG InstaView Door-in-Door has been further refined for 2021. LG InstaView illuminates the refrigerator’s interior with just two quick knocks on the transparent glass while Door-in-Door reduces interior cold air loss by providing a convenient space to keep frequently accessed items handy. With a more immersive tinted glass panel in the 2021 refrigerator, the new design complements the seamless InstaView Door-in-Door refrigerator’s flat stainless steel design and elegant aesthetic. And because the InstaView window is 23 percent larger than previous models, seeing what’s inside is easier than ever.

LG’s new InstaView refrigerators now incorporate LG’s UVnano technology which harnesses the power of light to effortlessly and effectively maintain a hygienic and germ-free water dispenser tap. First introduced in 2017 on the company’s most premium water dispenser products, UVnano operates once every hour to remove up to 99.99 percent of bacteria on the refrigerator’s dispenser tap.1 For additional peace of mind, users can also activate the UVnano feature with the press of a button.

A CES 2021 Innovation Awards Best of Innovation winner, the LG InstaView refrigerator with voice recognition makes time spent in the kitchen more productive and more convenient. No longer will shoppers have to struggle to open the refrigerator door with arms full of groceries when they can simply say, “open the refrigerator door” by voice. LG’s interactive voice technology also makes it possible to ask the refrigerator for today’s agenda or check the status of the ice and water dispensers.2 And with Amazon Dash Replenishment, homeowners can order consumables such as replacement water filters automatically by linking one’s Amazon account with the LG ThinQ app.

Every new InstaView product in the lineup incorporate LG’s proven freshness-enhancing systems, LINEARCooling™ and DoorCooling+™. LINEARCooling minimizes temperature fluctuations, the main cause of food spoilage.3 Simultaneously, DoorCooling+ cools the entire refrigerator compartment evenly by distributing powerful airflow from a strategically positioned vent.4

Debuting in InstaView French-Door refrigerators last year, LG Craft Ice™ is now coming to Side-by-Side InstaView refrigerators in 2021. The two-inch, slow melting ice balls generated by the LG Craft Ice system makes drinks look great while keeping them cool longer.

“The popularity of LG appliances during this difficult year came as quite a surprise to us,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We have leveraged the increase in consumer interest and pushed the boundaries of appliance innovation to deliver exciting products in 2021.”

The 2021 LG InstaView refrigerator lineup will be on display in LG’s virtual exhibition booth during CES 2021 starting January 11.

SEOUL, Korea and AURORA, Ontario, Canada, Dec. 23, 2020 – LG Electronics (“LG”) and Magna International Inc. (“Magna”) announced a joint venture (JV) to manufacture e-motors, inverters and on board chargers and, for certain automakers, related e-drive systems to support the growing global shift toward vehicle electrification. The new company, tentatively called LG Magna e-Powertrain, marries Magna’s strength in electric powertrain systems and world class automotive manufacturing with LG’s expertise in component development for e-motors and inverters, accelerating both partners’ growth in the electric powertrain market.

The JV enables the two companies to continue to grow their electric powertrain product offerings by leveraging existing technologies, engineering capabilities and global footprints. The market for e-motors, inverters and electric drive systems is expected to have significant growth between now and 2030, and the JV will target this fast-growing global market with a world-class portfolio.

LG has established experience in the development of electric vehicle components most notably for the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Jaguar I-PACE. LG will help accelerate Magna’s time to market and scale of manufacturing for electrification components, while software and systems integration are competencies that Magna brings to this venture. This JV will allow customers to select from a portfolio of reliable components through to integration of an entire electrified powertrain.

“This partnership fully aligns with our strategy of being at the forefront of electrification and supporting automakers with a diverse and world-class portfolio,” said Magna president and incoming CEO Swamy Kotagiri. “By combining our strengthens, we expect to gain investment efficiency and speed to market with synergies to achieve more, all while continuing to capitalize on the acceleration of the electrified powertrain market.”

“Manufacturers need to be disruptive to maintain leadership positions in electrification and, through this deal, LG is entering a new phase in its automotive components business, a growth opportunity with enormous potential,” said Dr. Kim Jin-yong, president of the LG Electronics Vehicle component Solutions Company. “We believe that the combination of our in-house prowess and the experience and extensive history of Magna will transform the EV powertrain space faster than if we proceed alone.”

The JV will include more than 1,000 employees located at LG locations in the United States, South Korea and China.

The transaction is expected to close in July of 2021, subject to a number of conditions including obtaining LG shareholder approval and all necessary regulatory approvals.

The Perfect Smartphone for You

An image of LG V60ThinQ 5G and LG Dual Screen, LG WING, LG VELVET, and a LG K Series device

When choosing a new smartphone, there are many factors that contribute to one’s purchase decision with price, specs and design being the most commonly cited factors. But with so many reasonable, capable phones available today, how does one go about making that final decision?

LG’s current crop of offerings has something for everyone, boasting form factors and feature sets that provide differentiated value and unique user experiences. So, no matter what your taste, needs or budget, LG has you covered. Below is a guide to choosing the best LG smartphone for you.

The many different colors of LG VELVET

LG VELVET: All About Design

For the design-conscious, the aesthetics of a phone are a very important consideration. A handset that stands out from the black-slab brigade with it unique, shimmering color finishes, pleasingly symmetrical 3D Arc Design and water droplet-inspired camera array, LG VELVET is the epitome of refined, modern style.

Taking its cue from nature, the rear “Raindrop” camera offers understated elegance, a sense of calm and a welcome change from the protruding, square arrangements found on many smartphones nowadays. For a balanced look and a balanced feel in the hand, LG has applied its 3D Arc Design, which gives the phone its evenly curved front and rear edges. LG VELVET comes in six distinctive colors such as the popular Illusion Sunset to suit a wide variety of stylistic sensibilities.

But not just for the design-lovers, LG VELVET is ideal for those who demand great sound from their mobile companion. For starters, it integrates the LG 3D Sound Engine, which employs the company’s advanced AI to recognize the genre of music playing and apply the optimal settings to bring every track fully to life. In addition to stereo speakers and the disappearing 3.5mm headphone jack, it comes with LG’s popular ASMR recording feature for capturing even the quietest of sounds in stunning clarity, and Voice Bokeh, which makes voices clearer against background noises when recording videos.

LG V60ThinQ 5G and Dual Screen: Because Two is Better Than One

People often assume that the bigger the smartphone screen, the better the user experience. Regardless of how big the display, it’s hard to beat the multitasking and entertainment possibilities rendered by having two screens at your disposal. For double the fun and double the productivity, LG presents the seamless combination of LG V60ThinQ 5G and LG Dual Screen – a pairing that can simultaneously run two apps in full screen and so much more.

On the duo’s two 6.8-inch high-quality displays, you can watch videos on one while sending an email on the other, or edit an image at the same time as viewing pictures from your photo albums. You can experience mobile gaming in a whole new way, playing full screen while also enjoying the precision of using a dedicated and customizable touch controller on the other display.

Equipped with the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 865 mobile platform, LG V60ThinQ 5G provides outstanding 5G connectivity and performance. With its super-large 5,000 mAh battery, the device can be used for extended periods without charging, and even supports 8K video recording for capturing memorable moments in detail.

LG WING: A Compelling New Mobile Experience

Recognizing that tired, staid design delivers a tired, staid mobile experience, LG set out to discover new usability – a path that led to the creation of LG WING. With its unique, swiveling form factor, LG WING refreshes the mobile experience in entirely new ways; making it just the thing for those who, like LG, are unafraid to try something different.

Rotating the Main Screen 90 degrees to reveal a secondary display underneath, LG WING in Swivel Mode provides new content creation and consumption possibilities. Viewing videos is far more immersive as there is nothing to get in the way of the action onscreen. This is because any alerts and notifications pop up on the smaller Second Screen, which can also be used as a media controller or convenient hand grip.

Shooting videos is also better in Swivel Mode. LG WING’s remarkable Gimbal Motion Camera makes it easy to take smooth, stable footage when on the move, with the Second Screen taking on the role of a thumb joystick to digitally change camera angles. Dual Recording lets users shoot video with the front and rear cameras simultaneously, while the phone’s swiveling, dual-screen configuration enables easier editing as well. With LG WING, the creative possibilities – and the fun – are practically endless.
