LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2020 At CES®, LG Electronics (LG) unveiled its advanced innovation in laundry, deploying artificial intelligence to deliver precision washing for optimal results without the guesswork. Winner of a coveted 2020 CES Innovation Award, the new LG ThinQ™ front-load washing machine features an Artificial Intelligent Direct Drive™ (AI DD) motor along with the company’s AI-powered Proactive Customer Care service.

The AI DD washer builds on 20 years of advancements in LG’s groundbreaking Direct Drive motor, which delivers both effectiveness and efficiency. LG’s new washing machine not only detects the volume and weight of each unique laundry load but also uses AI and advanced sensors to identify fabric types in each load. Using deep learning technology, the washer then compares this information against more than 20 thousand data points related to washer usage to  program the optimal wash cycle setting for the best results, improving cleaning and extending the life of garments by 15 percent.*

LG’s intelligent washer is able to detect a mixed load of t-shirts and pants (different from bedding, delicates and other fabric combinations) and program the wash cycle to use customized motions, temperatures and times for precise wash. And LG’s new user-friendly ezDispense feature takes the guesswork out of detergent dosage by automatically adding the exact amount of liquid detergent and fabric softener customized for each load size and wash times during the wash cycle for improved results. And when it comes to drying, the new LG Smart Pairing feature automatically sends the appropriate dryer setting for each load directly to the compatible LG dryer.

The intelligent washer can also connect with Amazon Alexa through LG’s ThinQ mobile app to provide notifications when the laundry detergent is running low. Customers can enable Amazon Dash Replenishment via the app to automatically reorder pre-selected supplies such as detergent and fabric softener to be delivered right to their door.

To further enhance the laundry experience, the AI DD washing machine supports LG Proactive Customer Care – a smart customer service solution that leverages advanced AI to deliver peace of mind and enhanced customer satisfaction, along with improved product performance and longevity. The service can immediately alert users to potential problems before they occur, expedite repairs when they are needed and offer useful maintenance tips to keep LG appliances performing their best.

In addition to the AI-powered features, the new LG washer offer additional convenient features that help save users time and deliver superior performance:

  • TurboWash™ 360 uses powerful jets to surround clothes from multiple angles so detergent can penetrate deep into fabrics for a complete clean – even for big loads – in under 30 minutes;
  • 3D Multi Spray shoots jets of water in five different directions simultaneously to quickly break down tough stains;
  • LG TWINWash™ saves time with two washers in one footprint. Wash small loads in the compact LG SideKick washer below while tackling larger loads up top.

“With our innovative washing technologies and AI-based customer service platform, we are certain that our washing machine with AI DD will exceed all consumer expectations,” said Dan Song, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “This washing machine sets a new benchmark for convenience with its larger capacity and customized laundry experience.”

The colossal and captivating LG OLED Wave is made up of 200 55-inch LG OLED digital signage screens (128 convex and concave and 72 flat) with a mirror finish. Measuring 6 meters (20 feet) high and 25 meters (82 feet) wide, the exhibit will immerse CES attendees in a breathtaking journey of discovery, displaying the glory of the natural world as it has never been seen before. From the raw power of the oceans to the birth of the Aurora Borealis in the northern sky, LG OLED Wave fills the senses with images and sound that surround, transporting the audience to some of the most memorable natural events and locations on Earth. They can even experience what it is like to walk beneath the ocean’s waves.

The Fountain wows visitors with a synchronized performance from 20 of LG’s groundbreaking rollable OLED TVs. The razor-thin flexible displays show off their superior image quality while rolling up and down in an entertaining, choreographed sequence. The rollable LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R is the only TV in the world with a screen that can completely disappear from view, withdrawing into its stylish aluminum base when not in use. The futuristic TV redefines the spatial relationship with its surroundings and is a landmark achievement in the history of television.

Since 2016, LG’s OLED installations have been must-see attractions at major international events. LG’s first OLED installation at CES, 2016’s LG OLED Tunnel, featured a dome-shaped configuration and displayed mesmerizing scenes of the night sky, winning LG a Red Dot Award for Spatial Communication. The next year, Senses of the Future, a large-scale light-based artwork presented at Milan Design Week, won the Milano Design Award 2017 for best installation, making LG the first Korean company to ever receive this accolade, and the Red Dot Grand Prix in the Spatial Communication category. LG OLED Falls, unveiled at last year’s CES, repeated the honor at the Red Dot Award 2019.

Visitors to LG’s CES 2020 booth (#11100, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center) from January 7-10 can experience the magnificence of LG’s newest OLED installations firsthand. Follow all of LG’s activities and announcements at CES on social media using #LGCES2020.

LG Unveils New Framework For Advancing AI Technology at CES 2020

LG’s CTO Outlines Future Roadmap for AI Development
Through Structured “Levels of AI Experience” Framework

Dr. I.P. Park talks about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) development at CES 2020 under the topic, “Levels of AI Experience: the future of AI and the Human Experience”

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2020 — At CES® 2020, LG Electronics (LG) President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. I.P. Park unveiled the framework for the future of artificial intelligence (AI) development with the title of “Levels of AI Experience: the Future of AI and the Human Experience”. The conceptual framework aligns with the LG ThinQ brand and its ambitious vision to transform the daily experience by connecting all aspects of people’s lives with intelligent touchpoints.

This far-reaching plan creates a clear roadmap for AI where the ultimate destination is a cohesive system comprising products and services that can make anywhere feel like home. Speaking at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Dr. Park explained that, amidst a wave of AI-related ideas and concepts, it is important to share a structured framework for the development of AI across the industry so that we may create a meaningful impact on the lives of customers we serve.

Dr. Park was joined on stage by Jean-François Gagné, co-founder and CEO of Element AI, the Montreal-based company that built its reputation on effective AI implementation. Together, they discussed how the framework was developed and their responsibility as an industry when developing future technologies will play a transformative role and explained four levels of AI experience (AIX) – Efficiency, Personalization, Reasoning and Exploration – which are anchored in significant jumps in technical capability and its application.

Efficiency, the first level, is where specific device and system functions can be automated through simple commands, which is currently possible with most voice recognition and AI-enabled products on the market today. At this level, the AI automatically adjusts performance in relation to pre-established sensory input parameters, maximizing efficiency in user interactions. An example of first-level AI is the LG ThinQ air conditioner that has a smart sensor to detect the presence of people in a room and adjusting the temperature and airflow accordingly, Dr. Park explained.

The next level, Personalization, focuses on pattern learning to optimize and personalize device functions, Gagné said. AI-powered devices and services at this level can accumulate data from interactions with the environment and users, recognize patterns and use them to improve their ability to effectively perform tasks and simplify user interactions. Dr. Park described how LG’s next-generation R9 robot vacuum cleaner will be able to learn from mistakes (such as getting stuck in gaps and corners) by remembering spatial patterns.

Reasoning, the third level, envisions an AI that uses causality learning through the collective intelligence of a system made up of different devices and services. By perceiving the cause of certain patterns and behaviors, AI at this level can better predict and promote positive outcomes for users. “Here, we can leverage the diversity of our product portfolio because we’ll need many intelligent touchpoints that interact with the user and gather information to understand the ‘why’ and establish causality,” noted Dr. Park.

Although still far in the future, level four, Exploration, is “the ultimate destination for LG’s AI,” Dr. Park concluded. Using a concept called Experimental Learning based on the scientific method, AI-enabled systems will be able to develop new capabilities through forming and testing hypotheses to uncover new inferences, enabling them to learn and improve, adding more value to users’ lives.

“As pioneers in the field of AI it is our responsibility to consider the importance of the Human Experience whilst pushing the boundaries of AI research and development,” added Element AI’s Gagné. “Together with LG Electronics we hope that this work helps to set forth standards and principles that guide AI practitioners to consider a human centric approach when building the future.”

The announcement of AIX levels was welcomed by a score of leading figures in the field, across various industries as well as academia. “It is our responsibility to drive the development of the field of AI towards a future in which the technology is being harnesses in a manner that is beneficial for both individuals and society as a whole,” said Yoshua Bengio, the Turing award winner, founder and scientific director of Mila, the research institute partnership between the Université de Montréal and McGill University with Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal.

Dr. Park also previewed compelling AI innovations that will be featured in LG’s massive exhibition space at CES 2020, opening January 7. Embodying the company’s Anywhere is home concept, the LG ThinQ Zone will bring to life a truly connected lifestyle that extends beyond the front door, demonstrating how the company’s AI products and services align with different aspects of everyday life to offer unprecedented customer value.

The LG ThinQ Home experience begins with Smart Door, which verifies visitors with both facial recognition and vein authentication before unlocking. Biometrics also are required to access the fresh food storage facility, a secure space for delivered groceries. When exiting, you can use a screen on the inside of the door that displays useful information such as weather and traffic conditions. When set to depart mode, the Smart Door instructs LG ThinQ appliances to go into low power when all residents have left the house.

In the Connected Car Zone, LG will demonstrate a more personalized in-car experience that allows drivers and passengers to take a piece of home on the road with them. LG’s connected car solution is based on its webOS Auto platform and was developed in partnership with leading auto seat manufacturer, Adient. Inside the vehicle there are OLED displays on which users can continue enjoying the TV programs and movies they started watching at home. The Personal Sound Zone delivers a unique multimedia experience for each rider while the voice-activated Virtual Personal Assistant isolates and recognizes voice commands even over loud music and conversations.

The ThinQ Fit Collection Zone will allow visitors to experience virtual fashion without having to step into a fitting room. LG ThinQ FitTM, an evolution of LG’s original Smart Mirror concept, uses 3D cameras to accurately measure the user’s body to generate a realistic avatar for virtual fittings. The technology can use big data to offer style suggestions and links to platforms that allow for direct purchases of clothes.

And what would CES be without LG robots? LG’s robotic solutions will impress attendees of the show with their culinary skills, efficiency and first-class hospitality at CLOi’s Table Zone, a futuristic restaurant where LG CLOi robots manage the entire operation from taking orders, cooking, serving and cleaning. Potential diners would make reservations remotely via the ThinQ app and browse the menu via a smart speaker, smart TV or smartphone.

Experience all this and more at LG’s CES booth #11100 in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 7-10. Follow all of LG’s exciting CES announcements and activities on social media using #LGCES2020.

SEOUL, Jan. 3, 2020 — LG Electronics (LG), the company delivering the Real 8K experience, will introduce its expanded 8K TV lineup next week at CES® 2020 – eight TVs with new 77- and 65-inch class models joining LG’s existing 88- and 75-inch screen sizes.

The diverse 2020 lineup includes premium 88- and 77-inch class LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K TVs (models 88/77 OLED ZX) and advanced LG NanoCell TVs (models 75/65 Nano99, 75/65 Nano97, 75/65 Nano95), with every model exceeding the industry’s official new 8K Ultra HD definition set by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) which requires a minimum 50 percent CM threshold. Trusted independent labs such as TÜV Rheinland have validated that LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K and LG 8K NanoCell TV exceed this definition.*

Not only do LG 8K TVs deliver Real 8K, they are also future-proofed to provide customers peace of mind with multiple ways to enjoy the Real 8K experience. The new models offer the capability to play native 8K content thanks to support of the widest selection of 8K content sources from HDMI and USB digital inputs, including codecs such as HEVC, VP9 and AV1, the latter being backed by major streaming providers including YouTube. LG’s 8K TVs will support 8K content streaming at a rapid 60FPS and are certified to deliver 8K 60P over HDMI.

LG’s latest 8K TVs also feature upgraded performance thanks to the new α (Alpha) 9 Gen 3 AI Processor. By leveraging deep learning technology, the 2020 lineup delivers optimized picture and sound quality for all types of content through AI-based 8K upscaling. The α9 Gen 3 processor’s AI Picture Pro is capable of recognizing faces and text on screen, fine-tuning and sharpening each to produce more natural skin tones, well-defined facial features and clearer, more readable characters. What’s more, Auto Genre Selection recognizes the type of content being watched and automatically applies the ideal picture settings, guaranteeing the best image quality among four genres: movie, sports, standard and animation.

LG’s AI Sound Pro analyzes and classifies the audio of content among five categories –music, movies, sports, drama or news – for clearer voices and richer, more textured background sound. Spoken words are isolated and their volume increased, making it distinctively easier for viewers to understand while background noises are identified and the scene up-mixed to virtual 5.1 surround for a heightened level of viewer immersion.

On top of the exceptional viewing experience, LG 8K TVs offer a new level of convenience made possible by AI technology. Users can monitor and control compatible IoT devices directly from the TV’s Home Dashboard, while Hands-Free Voice Control allows viewers to easily control multiple connected devices with just their voice, even from across the room. Available in 144 countries, ThinQ voice recognition is built into every LG 8K TV. And with LG’s popular smart TV platform, webOS, the new TVs support Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit as well as both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, with Amazon Alexa Premium Far-Field Voice compatibility in the future.

“LG is deeply committed to providing consumers with an outstanding viewing experience,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “With LG 8K OLED and NanoCell TVs, customers can know they are getting future-proofed products that will deliver mesmerizing picture quality regardless of the format.”

SEOUL, Jan. 2, 2020 — LG Electronics (LG) is set to impress visitors at CES® 2020 with two new InstaView™ smart refrigerators: LG InstaView with Craft Ice™ and the second-generation LG InstaView ThinQ.™ With thoughtful features for home entertaining and a more streamlined user experience, these groundbreaking InstaView fridges help make the primary kitchen appliance even more convenient and enjoyable. LG’s InstaView technology makes it possible to peer inside the refrigerator without opening the door via a transparent glass panel that also doubles as a display for looking up recipes and watching cooking videos.

Ice that Delights
A helpful ally when entertaining friends and family, the stunning CES 2020 Innovation Award-winning InstaView with Craft Ice is the first refrigerator in the world with a built-in ice maker that produces spherical ice which melts much more slowly. Having rolled out in the United States, LG will be making InstaView with Craft Ice available in additional markets in 2020. Measuring two inches in diameter, the craft ice melts slower than ice cubes to preserve the flavor of drinks longer.

New InstaView ThinQ
In 2020, LG will be upgrading its top-of-the-line InstaView refrigerators with second- generation ThinQ technology. Food items placed inside or removed from the refrigerator – including the Door-in-Door® and crisper drawers – will be tracked with advanced vision and artificial intelligence for real-time inventory of what’s inside at any given moment. With this information, the new LG InstaView ThinQ fridge will be able to offer helpful meal suggestions based on available ingredients. The smarter technology will even alert homeowners when they’re running low on items and suggest options for reordering them, long before you arrive home to find out that you’re out of eggs.

The smarter 2020 LG InstaView’s transparent front panel does more than just let users peer inside without opening the door and letting cold air escape. The panel doubles as a 22-inch display to browse the internet and watch cooking videos via Wi-Fi without a separate smartphone or tablet.

Customer Service the LG Way
Both LG InstaView models on display at CES will offer Proactive Customer Care service, LG’s ThinQ AI-infused smart customer service solution. The service provides consumers personalized support to get the most from their appliances, offering helpful tips to maximize performance and proactively alerting users about potential issues. For instance, this feature monitors the refrigerator’s operation in real time and sends an alert via the LG ThinQ app if it detects an unusual increase in temperature, if the water filter needs replacement and other vital information to keep the refrigerator running best.

“Our goal at CES 2020 is to show what’s possible in tomorrow’s kitchens with LG InstaView refrigerators and AI,” said Dan Song, president of the LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “With technology quickly transforming boring white boxes into exciting machines that can create craft ice, plan dinner and create shopping lists, our advanced refrigerators with ThinQ are designed for customers who appreciate any help they can get in the kitchen.”

Brazilians Experience Superiority of OLED TV

TV LAB TECH (1)

How complicated is OLED TV technology, anyway?

To find out, the LG team in São Paulo earlier this month hosted Lab Tech LG, an in-depth session to put LG’s OLED TVs head-to-head against the best the industry had to offer. To prove that beauty is more than skin deep, LG technicians dismantled one of its own OLED TV as well as a leading quantum dot LCD TV. Key components of each TV were revealed and described to the audience of knowledged tech journalists.

Throughout the process, what was clearly apparent was how simple the OLED TV was. Since OLED technology is self-emissive, there is no need for an additional layer of illumination, or backlighting. This stands in stark contrast to LCD TVs which require layers of filters and backlighting, more components to do what OLED can do with a single panel. And it’s this elegant simplicity that allows OLED TVs to be super slim with flexible screens that can be curved or even rolled.

In addition to dissecting the LG OLED TV, other units were disassembled for the audience – LG LCD TV,  LG NanoCell TV and a competing TV technology, quantum dot. Peering inside each TV set allowed the audience to see what actually makes OLED so special. OLED technology’s self-emissive pixels are what deliver perfect blacks and vibrant colors that remain true from any viewing angle. While quantum dot TVs do indeed deliver better picture performance than regular LCDs, they still rely on “zone lighting” which can cause light leakage in dark scenes.

Bruno Martinez, who writes for a leading Brazilian tech website, penned a thorough evaluation of the TV models presented at Lab Tech LG, noting how different OLED and LCD technologies actually were. He posted a video to his Instagram account that included key scenes from the event and a personal thanks to LG for a “sensational experience.”

LG’s New CordZero Vacs Featuring Power Drive Mop Deliver Spotless Cleaning Made Easy

LG to Demonstrate Outstanding Performance, Next-level Convenience,
Time- and Energy-Saving Cleaning Solutions at CES 2020

LG CordZeroThinQ A9 Stick Vacuum hooked up to its multi-type charging stand that provides space-efficient storage for the vacuum and its various nozzles and accessories.

SEOUL, Dec. 31, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) is upping the ante at CES 2020 with new cord-free cleaning products with new mopping capabilities. The LG CordZeroThinQ A9 Stick Vacuum delivers effective vacuuming and mopping from a single stick-type device, while the new CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop combines LG’s robotics and appliance know-how in a compact package that can take on difficult cleaning jobs.

LG’s proprietary Power Drive MopTM technology transforms both the CordZeroThinQ A9 and CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop into tools for keeping floors spotlessly clean. Thanks to an advanced automatic water supply system, the two rapidly rotating mop pads always have just the right amount of water to clean without leaving a puddle behind. To accommodate different types of flooring and cleaning power, users can choose to increase, decrease or completely shut off the flow of water.

LG CordZeroThinQ A9 with Power Drive Mop
With interchangeable nozzles, the LG CordZeroThinQ A9 can be easily switched from vacuum to mop and back again. Its Power Drive Nozzle removes dust from carpets and hard floors with powerful suction thanks to LG’s Smart Inverter Motor™. This same motor delivers great mopping results when used with the Power Drive Mop attachment. One-touch controls, two quick-change battery packs and removable, washable filters elevate the effectiveness of this dual-function appliance. An included multi-type charging stand offers convenient recharging and space-efficient storage for both the vacuum and accessories. Owners of the original CordZeroThinQ A9 can simply purchase the Power Drive Mop upgrade kit, which includes the nozzle and mop pads.

LG CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop
The LG CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop takes automatic floor cleaning to another level with its power drive dual spin mops enhanced with Dual Eye™ technology. With its front-mounted Dual Eye camera, the CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop can accurately detect and recognize its surroundings to avoid collisions with household furniture and pets. By accessing My Zone using the LG ThinQ app, users can designate which specific areas of the house to clean.

Homeowners who also own the CordZeroThinQ R9 robotic vacuum can connect the two units via Wi-Fi to create a comprehensive home cleaning network that will be the envy of the neighbors. Once the R9 has completed vacuuming, it notifies CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop with information on areas of the home that require mopping.

“With more consumers today opting for hard floors, it was apparent that vacuums alone wouldn’t satisfy everyone,” said Dan Song, president of the LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “By leveraging our technological expertise and in-depth understanding of consumers’ needs, we developed the CordZeroThinQ products to handle challenging cleaning jobs.”

The LG CordZeroThinQ A9 and CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop will be on display during CES 2020 from January 7-10 in booth #11100, Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Follow all of LG’s CES activities and announcements on social media using #LGCES2020.
