More and more, water scarcity is becoming a very serious global issue. No less than four billion humans are faced with a lack of clean, safe drinking water at least one month of every year while more than half a billion worldwide live with the challenges of extreme water scarcity year round. The proliferation of single-use plastic items such as bottles, straws and bags, is only making matters worse, being a significant cause of the water pollution that ultimately restricts people’s access to drinkable, contaminate-free water.

To address the problem and help effect lasting, positive change, LG India initiated the LG Eco Agents of Change campaign focusing on teaching the nation’s youth about the importance of water conservation, the need to improve access to safe drinking water and the dangers of single-use plastics. The program aims to empower tomorrow’s leaders with an important message to spread to a wider audience and future generations.

An instructor from the Forum for Organized Resource Conservation and Enhancement explains the LG Eco Agents of Change campaign in front of visiting teachers.

LG India teamed up with a total of 50 schools from 10 cities nationwide, nominating more than 350 teachers with backgrounds in science and environmental studies to receive training kits and online support from LG’s Eco Agents of Change NGO partner, Forum for Organized Resource Conservation and Enhancement (FORCE). With this new-found knowledge, students were empowered to become Eco Warriors.

Two girl students give their presentations about the water conservation and the importance of safe drinking water.

As part of the campaign, these students were encouraged to develop presentations to demonstrate water conservation and the importance of safe drinking water. Creative exhibits included rain harvesting, drip irrigation systems and water filtration using sand, gravel and charcoal. The youngsters also presented various creative solutions to reuse and repurpose disposable plastics into shopping bags, planters, even a chandelier!

A local team of the LG Eco Agents of Change campaign performs on the stage to encourage their community to do their part in combating the water and plastic pollution.

Participating students also held rallies and put on performances, encouraging all members of the community to do their part in combating the issues of water scarcity and plastic pollution. The involvement of local VIPs and government officials helped to spread the campaign’s important message to a national audience. Currently, the program is engaging approximately 2,800 students and more than 250 teachers.

LG FILES IP LAWSUIT AGAINST ARÇELIK A.Ş. AND RELATED HOME APPLIANCE COMPANIES

LG Responds Aggressively to Unauthorized Use of Its
Patented Freezer Door-Ice Making Technology

A close-up view of showing LG’s patented door-ice making refrigerator technology.

SEOUL, Sep. 25, 2019 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Turkish-based home appliance manufacturer Arçelik A.Ş. and its German affiliates Beko Deutschland GmbH and Grundig Intermedia GmbH in The Munich (Ger.) District Court I. The suits center on the unlicensed implementation of LG’s freezer door-ice making technology featured in a number of the companies’ refrigerators sold in Europe. The three companies are all affiliates of Turkey’s Koç Holding A.Ş., whose home appliances are available mainly in Turkey and major European markets.

Legal action became LG’s final option after negotiations with Arçelik A.Ş., Beko Deutschland GmbH’s and Grundig Intermedia GmbH’s parent company, failed to make headway. LG’s freezer door-ice making technology was originally developed by LG for its Side-by-Side refrigerator models and is included in a portfolio of more than 400 patents specifically relating to door-ice making technology. LG’s patented door-ice making technology efficiently utilizes the storage space of the freezer to take up less room than a conventional ice maker and frees up more space for food storage. In June of this year, LG licensed its patented door-ice making technology for French-door refrigerators to Haier-owned GE Appliances.

“We continue to proactively protect our intellectual property and will respond vigorously to the unauthorized use of our patented technologies,” said Jeon Saeng-gyu, executive vice president of LG’s Intellectual Property Center. “As international competition over innovation increases, it is more important than ever that we protect our investments in research and development.”

WHY UNDERSTANDING TV DISPLAY RESOLUTION MATTERS

“Resolution is a measure of the ability to discriminate picture detail
i.e. the ability to distinguish two adjacent spots on the screen.” 1

With the advent of larger screens and 8K display technology it’s more important for consumers to understand how resolution impacts the delivery of true-to-life viewing experience. There are some key concepts that need to be taken into consideration when evaluating the quality of high resolution displays and TVs, especially 8K TVs.

LG’s 75-inch NanoCell 8K television seen from at a 15-degree angle

Resolution and Display Quality
8K is the highest definition for televisions available on the market today. 8K TV has four times the number of pixels as 4K TVs, also known as Ultra High Definition (Ultra HD). Consumers today have come to equate the number of pixels on a screen with display quality and typically assume that the more pixels a display has, the better the display will look.

But simply counting pixels fails to capture other important elements of modern display quality, including the resolution the viewer actually sees. Resolution is often confused with horizontal pixel count such 3,840 pixels (4K) and 7,680 pixels (8K). What’s certain is that a poorly designed display will have lower display quality (i.e. image or text blurriness) even with a high pixel count if adjacent pixels are not clearly distinguishable from one another.

A side view of the promotional stand for the 8K LG SIGNATURE OLED TV lineup

“Resolution is the number of pixels (or lines) that can be
adequately distinguished across the screen.” 2

For this reason, the industry standards organization, the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM), established an international set of guidelines for resolution measurement that take such factors into consideration.

International Standard For Resolution
The work of the ICDM, comprised of scientists, engineers, corporate researchers and key members of the display industry, cannot be understated. Without TV measurement standards, it would be impossible for consumers to be able to distinguish one product from another because none of the marketing claims could be confirmed. That’s why major display manufacturers such as LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics are members of the ICDM and pledge to abide by the organization’s recommendations.

The letters C and M displayed on the screen with dots the size of 0.216 x 0.216 millimeter to measure the resolution according to the Contrast Modulation method

The ICDM states that Contrast Modulation (CM), rather than pixel count, most accurately and adequately measures true display resolution and recommends that manufacturers adopt CM when describing resolution quality. This standard of using Contrast Modulation has been adopted by other international standards setting bodies such as the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

“Contrast modulation (Michelson contrast) is considered by some
to be the best and most complete single-metric description
of the ability of a display to exhibit information.” 3

Contrast Modulation measures the ability to distinguish a pattern of alternating white and black lines (representative of pixels) and is expressed as a percentage or ratio. Under the ICDM’s standard for measuring display performance (Information Display Measurements Standard 7.8), contrast modulation is calculated as follows:

The mathematical equation of the Contrast Modulation method

Lw and Lk indicate the luminance of white and black lines. The higher the CM percentage, the clearer the images and text on a display will appear:

A diagram explaining the Contrast Modulation method that indicates pixel width and the luminance level of black and white lines

For industry consistency, the ICDM established minimum Contrast Modulation standards. For text and graphics, that threshold is 50 percent or more while for images, the minimum is 25 percent. Although the ICDM has different recommendations for text and graphics than for images, the generally accepted combined minimum is 50 percent. In other words, a TV with a width of 7,680 pixels is only truly 8K if it satisfies the 50 percent minimum Contrast Modulation threshold otherwise it cannot be called “real 8K”.

LG Satisfies The Standards
In tests run in accordance with display industry standards mentioned above, both LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K and LG 8K NanoCell TV recorded a CM in the 90 percent range, satisfying the industry standard by a wide margin. International testing and ratings agency Intertek tested LG’s 75-inch NanoCell 8K television and found that the unit easily met the CM standard set by ICDM using an 8K test pattern. According to Intertek, the LG TV measured 90 percent CM on the horizontal axis and 91 percent vertically. Another world-class testing and certification association, Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) , tested the same LG TV model and reported similar results with CM measurements in the 90 percent range.

A concept image of the LG NanoCell 8K TVs that claims the TV satisfies international standards

The Picture Is Clear
By using consistent display measurement methodologies, consumers no longer have to guess if the product description they’re reading is consistent from one model to the next. But for standards to work, industry members must commit. There is no debate that Contrast Modulation is the most honest and accurate method for measuring and reporting resolution. What’s critical now is for manufacturers to adhere to the standards that they have committed to follow.

And when it comes to the camera, the LG G8XThinQ is a shutterbug’s dream come true, sporting a 32MP front shooter with a 1.6μm sensor that rivals the impressive cameras on the back for stellar shots whichever way the phone is facing. Also, for the perfect selfie, Reflector Mode ensures clearer, sharper portraits even in dark environments letting users adjust the lighting color to match their mood or preference. AI Action Shot in the new LG G8XThinQ recognizes and compensates for movement with a shutter speed of 1/480 of a second to keep subjects fully in focus; ideal for taking memorable shots of kids or pets playing. 4K Time-lapse lets users create artistic time lapse videos in stunning 4K resolution while LG Steady Cam provides enhanced image stability for footage that looks more polished and professional. Available for the first time, switching between front and rear cameras while recording video is possible with LG G8XThinQ.

A proven leader in smartphone audio, LG doesn’t disappoint with its G8XThinQ. Two 1.2W speakers deliver bold, perfectly balanced stereo sound while the 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC tuned by Meridian Audio continues to make LG the benchmark for exceptional smartphone sound. On the recording end, the LG G8XThinQ features a microphone sensitive enough for the most captivating ASMR recordings.

And when it comes to looks, the LG G8XThinQ shares much of the DNA of previous LG phones while forging its own identify. Connecting the phone to the Dual Screen is now achieved via USB instead of Pogo Pins for a sleeker, cleaner looking phone when used without the case. LG G8XThinQ features an improved user interface with a cleaner design, refreshed icons and tabs such as Dial, Call logs, and Contacts moving to the bottom of the display so that users can get even more done with only one hand.

“LG Dual Screen is now a proven form factor, highly regarded for its practicality and the world of multitasking possibilities it opens up,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG’s Mobile Communications and Home Entertainment companies. “We’ll continue to expand the LG Dual Screen ecosystem through strategic partnerships and upgrade our innovation in meaningful ways to bring consumers a differentiated user experience.”

LG G8XThinQ and upgraded LG Dual Screen will be available in key markets in the fourth quarter. From September 6-11, visitors to IFA 2019 can be the first to experience the new LG G8XThinQ and LG Dual Screen for themselves in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin.

At LG Future Talk Powered by IFA LG Shows How AI Can Make Anywhere Feel Like Home

Offering a New Vision of Transformation Through
“Evolve, Connect and Open” Strategy

Dr. I.P. Park, president and chief technology officer of LG Electronics, delivers a speech at a panel talk event to kick off IFA 2019.

BERLIN, Sep. 5, 2019 — At a panel talk event to kick off IFA 2019 in Berlin, Dr. I.P. Park, president and Chief Technology Officer of LG Electronics, shared the company’s vision for an AI-powered future where Anywhere is Home. Addressing the three pillars of LG’s AI strategy Evolve, Connect and Open, Dr. Park and the expert guest panelists discussed how innovations in AI and connectivity will expand the notion of home to every domain of living beyond the front door.

At the heart of today’s discussion was the role of LG ThinQ, the company’s brand for intelligent devices, which now brings together AI products and services as well as those with Wi-Fi and IoT capabilities under a unified vision for an AI-based ecosystem. To illustrate the evolution of LG ThinQ, Dr. Park introduced a intelligent learning concept which enables robot vacuum cleaners to avoid getting stuck in corners and obstacles. Facilitating such innovations will be LG’s proprietary AI chip for appliances, launched earlier this year, which uses LG Neural Engine for on-device AI.

At the same time, in order to connect more digital touchpoints in consumers’ lives, LG is researching ways to diversify the modes of user-device interaction beyond voice recognition. This encompasses innovations such as the add-on vision intelligence module Vision Pack, a vision sensor connected to the cloud. Dr. Park demonstrated the LG Styler with Vision Pack that can visually recognize items of clothing and make recommendations accordingly. Dr. Park also introduced LG ThinQ Fit, an evolution of the Smart Mirror concept where 3D cameras accurately measure the user’s body size to generate a realistic avatar for virtual fittings.

Dr. Park highlighted the importance of openness in terms of partnership and collaboration. LG’s investment in opening up its platforms to others is key to broader compatibility and diversity of innovation. Consistent with this philosophy, LG recently made the LG ThinQ platform (http://deepthinq.developer.lge.com) available to external partners and developers to accelerate the development of its AI technology.

Dr. Park’s panel of guests included luminaries from all corners of the tech sector who engaged in an in-depth exploration of AI technology, its development, and how it can be applied to improve the quality of life. Guest speakers included Dino Flore, vice president of technology at Qualcomm responsible for the company’s 5G strategy across EMEA; Maurice Conti, a renowned futurist and Chief Innovation Officer of Telefonica’s moonshot factory Alpha, and Ralph Wiegmann, CEO of iF International Forum Design.

Evolve, Connect and Open are our standards for a kind of AI which will make life measurably better,” said Dr. I.P. Park of LG. “It’s not just about improving what we’re doing now, but fundamentally transforming how we live and think.”

“We’re fortunate to have LG addressing again one of the most important developments in consumer technology,” said Jens Heithecker, Messe Berlin Group executive vice president and IFA executive director. “The IFA audience is incredibly interested in all things AI and it’s important that they understand what’s down the road from one of AI’s strongest advocates.”

Visitors to the LG booth in Hall 18 at Messe Berlin this week will be able to experience LG’s most advanced consumer application of AI in LG ThinQ Home, designed with a range of intelligent, connected lifestyle solutions for a better tomorrow.
