LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2020 At CES®, LG Electronics (LG) unveiled its advanced innovation in laundry, deploying artificial intelligence to deliver precision washing for optimal results without the guesswork. Winner of a coveted 2020 CES Innovation Award, the new LG ThinQ™ front-load washing machine features an Artificial Intelligent Direct Drive™ (AI DD) motor along with the company’s AI-powered Proactive Customer Care service.

The AI DD washer builds on 20 years of advancements in LG’s groundbreaking Direct Drive motor, which delivers both effectiveness and efficiency. LG’s new washing machine not only detects the volume and weight of each unique laundry load but also uses AI and advanced sensors to identify fabric types in each load. Using deep learning technology, the washer then compares this information against more than 20 thousand data points related to washer usage to  program the optimal wash cycle setting for the best results, improving cleaning and extending the life of garments by 15 percent.*

LG’s intelligent washer is able to detect a mixed load of t-shirts and pants (different from bedding, delicates and other fabric combinations) and program the wash cycle to use customized motions, temperatures and times for precise wash. And LG’s new user-friendly ezDispense feature takes the guesswork out of detergent dosage by automatically adding the exact amount of liquid detergent and fabric softener customized for each load size and wash times during the wash cycle for improved results. And when it comes to drying, the new LG Smart Pairing feature automatically sends the appropriate dryer setting for each load directly to the compatible LG dryer.

The intelligent washer can also connect with Amazon Alexa through LG’s ThinQ mobile app to provide notifications when the laundry detergent is running low. Customers can enable Amazon Dash Replenishment via the app to automatically reorder pre-selected supplies such as detergent and fabric softener to be delivered right to their door.

To further enhance the laundry experience, the AI DD washing machine supports LG Proactive Customer Care – a smart customer service solution that leverages advanced AI to deliver peace of mind and enhanced customer satisfaction, along with improved product performance and longevity. The service can immediately alert users to potential problems before they occur, expedite repairs when they are needed and offer useful maintenance tips to keep LG appliances performing their best.

In addition to the AI-powered features, the new LG washer offer additional convenient features that help save users time and deliver superior performance:

  • TurboWash™ 360 uses powerful jets to surround clothes from multiple angles so detergent can penetrate deep into fabrics for a complete clean – even for big loads – in under 30 minutes;
  • 3D Multi Spray shoots jets of water in five different directions simultaneously to quickly break down tough stains;
  • LG TWINWash™ saves time with two washers in one footprint. Wash small loads in the compact LG SideKick washer below while tackling larger loads up top.

“With our innovative washing technologies and AI-based customer service platform, we are certain that our washing machine with AI DD will exceed all consumer expectations,” said Dan Song, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “This washing machine sets a new benchmark for convenience with its larger capacity and customized laundry experience.”

LG Unveils New Framework For Advancing AI Technology at CES 2020

LG’s CTO Outlines Future Roadmap for AI Development
Through Structured “Levels of AI Experience” Framework

Dr. I.P. Park talks about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) development at CES 2020 under the topic, “Levels of AI Experience: the future of AI and the Human Experience”

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2020 — At CES® 2020, LG Electronics (LG) President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. I.P. Park unveiled the framework for the future of artificial intelligence (AI) development with the title of “Levels of AI Experience: the Future of AI and the Human Experience”. The conceptual framework aligns with the LG ThinQ brand and its ambitious vision to transform the daily experience by connecting all aspects of people’s lives with intelligent touchpoints.

This far-reaching plan creates a clear roadmap for AI where the ultimate destination is a cohesive system comprising products and services that can make anywhere feel like home. Speaking at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Dr. Park explained that, amidst a wave of AI-related ideas and concepts, it is important to share a structured framework for the development of AI across the industry so that we may create a meaningful impact on the lives of customers we serve.

Dr. Park was joined on stage by Jean-François Gagné, co-founder and CEO of Element AI, the Montreal-based company that built its reputation on effective AI implementation. Together, they discussed how the framework was developed and their responsibility as an industry when developing future technologies will play a transformative role and explained four levels of AI experience (AIX) – Efficiency, Personalization, Reasoning and Exploration – which are anchored in significant jumps in technical capability and its application.

Efficiency, the first level, is where specific device and system functions can be automated through simple commands, which is currently possible with most voice recognition and AI-enabled products on the market today. At this level, the AI automatically adjusts performance in relation to pre-established sensory input parameters, maximizing efficiency in user interactions. An example of first-level AI is the LG ThinQ air conditioner that has a smart sensor to detect the presence of people in a room and adjusting the temperature and airflow accordingly, Dr. Park explained.

The next level, Personalization, focuses on pattern learning to optimize and personalize device functions, Gagné said. AI-powered devices and services at this level can accumulate data from interactions with the environment and users, recognize patterns and use them to improve their ability to effectively perform tasks and simplify user interactions. Dr. Park described how LG’s next-generation R9 robot vacuum cleaner will be able to learn from mistakes (such as getting stuck in gaps and corners) by remembering spatial patterns.

Reasoning, the third level, envisions an AI that uses causality learning through the collective intelligence of a system made up of different devices and services. By perceiving the cause of certain patterns and behaviors, AI at this level can better predict and promote positive outcomes for users. “Here, we can leverage the diversity of our product portfolio because we’ll need many intelligent touchpoints that interact with the user and gather information to understand the ‘why’ and establish causality,” noted Dr. Park.

Although still far in the future, level four, Exploration, is “the ultimate destination for LG’s AI,” Dr. Park concluded. Using a concept called Experimental Learning based on the scientific method, AI-enabled systems will be able to develop new capabilities through forming and testing hypotheses to uncover new inferences, enabling them to learn and improve, adding more value to users’ lives.

“As pioneers in the field of AI it is our responsibility to consider the importance of the Human Experience whilst pushing the boundaries of AI research and development,” added Element AI’s Gagné. “Together with LG Electronics we hope that this work helps to set forth standards and principles that guide AI practitioners to consider a human centric approach when building the future.”

The announcement of AIX levels was welcomed by a score of leading figures in the field, across various industries as well as academia. “It is our responsibility to drive the development of the field of AI towards a future in which the technology is being harnesses in a manner that is beneficial for both individuals and society as a whole,” said Yoshua Bengio, the Turing award winner, founder and scientific director of Mila, the research institute partnership between the Université de Montréal and McGill University with Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal.

Dr. Park also previewed compelling AI innovations that will be featured in LG’s massive exhibition space at CES 2020, opening January 7. Embodying the company’s Anywhere is home concept, the LG ThinQ Zone will bring to life a truly connected lifestyle that extends beyond the front door, demonstrating how the company’s AI products and services align with different aspects of everyday life to offer unprecedented customer value.

The LG ThinQ Home experience begins with Smart Door, which verifies visitors with both facial recognition and vein authentication before unlocking. Biometrics also are required to access the fresh food storage facility, a secure space for delivered groceries. When exiting, you can use a screen on the inside of the door that displays useful information such as weather and traffic conditions. When set to depart mode, the Smart Door instructs LG ThinQ appliances to go into low power when all residents have left the house.

In the Connected Car Zone, LG will demonstrate a more personalized in-car experience that allows drivers and passengers to take a piece of home on the road with them. LG’s connected car solution is based on its webOS Auto platform and was developed in partnership with leading auto seat manufacturer, Adient. Inside the vehicle there are OLED displays on which users can continue enjoying the TV programs and movies they started watching at home. The Personal Sound Zone delivers a unique multimedia experience for each rider while the voice-activated Virtual Personal Assistant isolates and recognizes voice commands even over loud music and conversations.

The ThinQ Fit Collection Zone will allow visitors to experience virtual fashion without having to step into a fitting room. LG ThinQ FitTM, an evolution of LG’s original Smart Mirror concept, uses 3D cameras to accurately measure the user’s body to generate a realistic avatar for virtual fittings. The technology can use big data to offer style suggestions and links to platforms that allow for direct purchases of clothes.

And what would CES be without LG robots? LG’s robotic solutions will impress attendees of the show with their culinary skills, efficiency and first-class hospitality at CLOi’s Table Zone, a futuristic restaurant where LG CLOi robots manage the entire operation from taking orders, cooking, serving and cleaning. Potential diners would make reservations remotely via the ThinQ app and browse the menu via a smart speaker, smart TV or smartphone.

Experience all this and more at LG’s CES booth #11100 in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 7-10. Follow all of LG’s exciting CES announcements and activities on social media using #LGCES2020.

SEOUL, Jan. 3, 2020 — LG Electronics (LG), the company delivering the Real 8K experience, will introduce its expanded 8K TV lineup next week at CES® 2020 – eight TVs with new 77- and 65-inch class models joining LG’s existing 88- and 75-inch screen sizes.

The diverse 2020 lineup includes premium 88- and 77-inch class LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K TVs (models 88/77 OLED ZX) and advanced LG NanoCell TVs (models 75/65 Nano99, 75/65 Nano97, 75/65 Nano95), with every model exceeding the industry’s official new 8K Ultra HD definition set by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) which requires a minimum 50 percent CM threshold. Trusted independent labs such as TÜV Rheinland have validated that LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K and LG 8K NanoCell TV exceed this definition.*

Not only do LG 8K TVs deliver Real 8K, they are also future-proofed to provide customers peace of mind with multiple ways to enjoy the Real 8K experience. The new models offer the capability to play native 8K content thanks to support of the widest selection of 8K content sources from HDMI and USB digital inputs, including codecs such as HEVC, VP9 and AV1, the latter being backed by major streaming providers including YouTube. LG’s 8K TVs will support 8K content streaming at a rapid 60FPS and are certified to deliver 8K 60P over HDMI.

LG’s latest 8K TVs also feature upgraded performance thanks to the new α (Alpha) 9 Gen 3 AI Processor. By leveraging deep learning technology, the 2020 lineup delivers optimized picture and sound quality for all types of content through AI-based 8K upscaling. What’s more, Auto Genre Selection recognizes the type of content being watched and automatically applies the ideal picture settings, guaranteeing the best image quality among four genres: movie, sports, standard and animation.

LG’s AI Sound Pro analyzes and classifies the audio of content among five categories –music, movies, sports, drama or news – for clearer voices and richer, more textured background sound. Spoken words are isolated and their volume increased, making it distinctively easier for viewers to understand while background noises are identified and the scene up-mixed to virtual 5.1 surround for a heightened level of viewer immersion.

On top of the exceptional viewing experience, LG 8K TVs offer a new level of convenience made possible by AI technology. Users can monitor and control compatible IoT devices directly from the TV’s Home Dashboard, while Hands-Free Voice Control allows viewers to easily control multiple connected devices with just their voice, even from across the room. Available in 144 countries, ThinQ voice recognition is built into every LG 8K TV. And with LG’s popular smart TV platform, webOS, the new TVs support Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit as well as both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, with Amazon Alexa Premium Far-Field Voice compatibility in the future.

“LG is deeply committed to providing consumers with an outstanding viewing experience,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “With LG 8K OLED and NanoCell TVs, customers can know they are getting future-proofed products that will deliver mesmerizing picture quality regardless of the format.”

New InstaView ThinQ
In 2020, LG will be upgrading its top-of-the-line InstaView refrigerators with second- generation ThinQ technology. Food items placed inside or removed from the refrigerator – including the Door-in-Door® and crisper drawers – will be tracked with advanced vision and artificial intelligence for real-time inventory of what’s inside at any given moment. With this information, the new LG InstaView ThinQ fridge will be able to offer helpful meal suggestions based on available ingredients. The smarter technology will even alert homeowners when they’re running low on items and suggest options for reordering them, long before you arrive home to find out that you’re out of eggs.

The smarter 2020 LG InstaView’s transparent front panel does more than just let users peer inside without opening the door and letting cold air escape. The panel doubles as a 22-inch display to browse the internet and watch cooking videos via Wi-Fi without a separate smartphone or tablet.

Brazilians Experience Superiority of OLED TV

TV LAB TECH (1)

How complicated is OLED TV technology, anyway?

To find out, the LG team in São Paulo earlier this month hosted Lab Tech LG, an in-depth session to put LG’s OLED TVs head-to-head against the best the industry had to offer. To prove that beauty is more than skin deep, LG technicians dismantled one of its own OLED TV as well as a leading quantum dot LCD TV. Key components of each TV were revealed and described to the audience of knowledged tech journalists.

Throughout the process, what was clearly apparent was how simple the OLED TV was. Since OLED technology is self-emissive, there is no need for an additional layer of illumination, or backlighting. This stands in stark contrast to LCD TVs which require layers of filters and backlighting, more components to do what OLED can do with a single panel. And it’s this elegant simplicity that allows OLED TVs to be super slim with flexible screens that can be curved or even rolled.

TV LAB TECH (3)

In addition to dissecting the LG OLED TV, other units were disassembled for the audience – LG LCD TV,  LG NanoCell TV and a competing TV technology, quantum dot. Peering inside each TV set allowed the audience to see what actually makes OLED so special. OLED technology’s self-emissive pixels are what deliver perfect blacks and vibrant colors that remain true from any viewing angle. While quantum dot TVs do indeed deliver better picture performance than regular LCDs, they still rely on “zone lighting” which can cause light leakage in dark scenes.

TV LAB TECH (4)

Bruno Martinez, who writes for a leading Brazilian tech website, penned a thorough evaluation of the TV models presented at Lab Tech LG, noting how different OLED and LCD technologies actually were. He posted a video to his Instagram account that included key scenes from the event and a personal thanks to LG for a “sensational experience.”

TV LAB TECH (5)

Impressed and intrigued to see the inner workings of an LG OLED TV for the first time, the participants were encouraged to educate their followers and fans about the different TV technologies currently available today.

With its front-mounted Dual Eye camera, the CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop can accurately detect and recognize its surroundings to avoid collisions with household furniture and pets. By accessing My Zone using the LG ThinQ app, users can designate which specific areas of the house to clean.

Homeowners who also own the CordZeroThinQ R9 robotic vacuum can connect the two units via Wi-Fi to create a comprehensive home cleaning network that will be the envy of the neighbors. Once the R9 has completed vacuuming, it notifies CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop with information on areas of the home that require mopping.

“With more consumers today opting for hard floors, it was apparent that vacuums alone wouldn’t satisfy everyone,” said Dan Song, president of the LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “By leveraging our technological expertise and in-depth understanding of consumers’ needs, we developed the CordZeroThinQ products to handle challenging cleaning jobs.”

The LG CordZeroThinQ A9 and CordZeroThinQ Robotic Mop will be on display during CES 2020 from January 7-10 in booth #11100, Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Follow all of LG’s CES activities and announcements on social media using #LGCES2020.

2020 Range Features Expanded Models with Meridian High-Resolution
Sound and Immersive Experience of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X

LG Soundbar model SN11RG installed on a shelf under an LG TV as it delivers truly dynamic sounds

SEOUL, Dec. 27, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) will introduce at CES 2020 an impressive  lineup of soundbars featuring premium quality audio, easy connectivity, smart functionality and sleek designs that integrate perfectly with LG’s stunning TVs.

LG’s new soundbar models deliver rich, true-to-life sound that captivate with their accuracy and depth. The 2020 range again leverages the company’s long-standing partnership with Meridian Audio with more models featuring the company’s finely-tuned technologies such as Bass and Space, which boosts low-frequency reproduction and widens the soundstage and Image Elevation, which ensures a more lifelike listening experience by elevating the perceived height of lead instruments and vocals. Furthermore, the majority of the 2020 lineup supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for dynamic and thoroughly immersive audio.

New for LG premium soundbars, AI Room Calibration guarantees more optimized sound by automatically tailoring output to the specific characteristics of the room. These advanced models are self-calibrating, able to recognize and analyze tones to accurately assess the dimensions of a given space and adjusting accordingly. When playing content mastered with Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, this technology allows users to enjoy breathtakingly realistic surround sound with audio that appears to originate from multiple directions. What’s more, LG’s premium soundbars feature an advanced processing algorithm that can upscale conventional file formats to near-studio quality.

For the most vivid home theater experience possible, LG’s new soundbars offer 4K Pass-Through and more cinema-like audio with the optional SPK8 Wireless Rear Speaker Kit, compatible with most new LG soundbar models. And with Google Assistant built into more models for 2020, users can control compatible smart home devices from their LG soundbar with the comfort and ease of conversational voice commands. Connectivity will be easier than ever with the addition of enhanced audio return channel (eARC) so owners can plug external devices directly into their eARC compatible TVs and enjoy three-dimensional sound of high-resolution audio formats such as Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio.1

Among LG’s new entries in the soundbar category are two CES Innovation Award winners. Premium models SN9YG and SN11RG are recognized for their enhanced sound quality and usability while the flagship model SN11RG is a 7.1.4-channel system complete with two wireless rear speakers that deliver forward- and up-firing sound for 360 degrees of auditory bliss. With sleek, future-proof designs that match perfectly with the minimalist aesthetics of LG’s sleek 55- and 65-inch TVs, these stylish soundbars create seamless visual harmony that look splendid in any room.

“Our goal has always been to bring better sound to more people and by offering more great products that leverage our successful partnership with Meridian, our latest soundbars help achieve this,” said Park Hyung-woo, head of LG Home Entertainment Company’s audio and video business. “High-performance, convenient and very versatile, LG’s newest models will make the premium audio experience accessible to more customers worldwide.”

Visitors to LG’s CES booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center (Central Hall #11100) can experience the company’s latest soundbar innovations firsthand. Keep up on LG’s announcements at CES by following #LGCES2020 on social media.

LG Leverages Appliance Know-How to Develop First Indoor Vegetable Cultivator

Column Garden Uses Advanced Tech to Provide Convenient,
Automated Solution for Growing Wholesome Foods at Home

SEOUL, Dec. 26, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) will unveil an indoor gardening appliance at CES® 2020, its first foray into the booming indoor gardening movement. The revolutionary built-in column-type LG indoor gardening appliance employs advanced light, temperature and water control, convenient all-in-one seed packages and a growth-monitoring app to help users cultivate nutrient-rich and flavorful greens inside their own homes.

LG’s indoor gardening appliance lets even the complete novice experience the fun and joy of having a green thumb. Designed for the millions of consumers worldwide who want the peace of mind knowing exactly what’s in their food and where it comes from, the innovative indoor gardening appliance cultivate crisp, fresh herbs and vegetables all year-round, perfect for urban dwellers or anyone interested in pursuing a healthier lifestyle.

Utilizing flexible modules, the appliance replicates outdoor conditions by precisely matching the temperature inside the insulated cabinet with the time of day. LED lights, forced air circulation and wick-based water management allow seeds to transform quickly into ingredients for delicious recipes and dishes. The advanced gardening system is capable of holding up to 24 all-in-one seed packages, enough for a family of four to enjoy the healthful benefits and culinary delights of a wide range of home-grown edibles.*

LG’s leadership and know-how in appliance technologies is apparent in the indoor gardening cultivator. A key component of the automated gardening solution is LG’s non-circulating water supply technology, which evenly distributes the exact amount of water that plant packages require. This core technology prevents algae growth and inhibits unpleasant odors for a clean and hygienic environment where safe, natural herbs and leaf vegetables can grow. A companion smartphone app helps users manage and monitor their plants, offering useful guidance at each step along the way to ensure a successful harvest every time. The all-in-one seed packages containing seeds, peat moss and fertilizer, is designed for immediate planting. Initial packages will include 20 different varieties including romaine and other types of lettuce, arugula, chicory and basil.

“With more and more consumers these days living vegetarian and vegan lifestyles, it was important for us to contribute to this trend,” said Dan Song, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “Our first indoor gardening solution represents a new paradigm for LG in home appliances, offering a way for consumers to eat well while providing the joy of growing their own food, consistent with LG’s overall goal of making life better.”

LG’s first home gardening cultivator will be on display during CES 2020 from January 7-10 at booth #11100 in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Follow all of LG’s CES activities and announcements on social media using #LGCES2020.

PREVENTING FOOD WASTE WITH NATUREFRESH

A promotional image showing an LG bag surrounded by plates and bowls of healthy natural foods including strawberries and raspberries.

Food waste is a huge but invisible problem with global ramifications. By some estimates, almost half of the food made or grown in the world ends up being thrown out rather than consumed. As the Earth’s population continues to grow, so does the importance of minimizing waste in all of its forms, and this is especially true of what we eat. The good news is that reducing the problem is something all of us can play a part in.

Families can drastically cut what they throw away by shopping smarter and carefully planning out their weekly meals. Food storage is also a key factor in making more efficient use of ingredients, and the cornerstone of this is a good household refrigerator.

A look inside the LG refrigerator’s interior as a woman poses with a bottle of milk after taking it from one of the door’s shelves.

Refrigerators aren’t for convenience anymore. In a developed world, refrigerators are necessary to stave off food spoilage, keeping illness and food poisoning at bay.

To show consumers how to minimize food waste at home, LG in Romania conducted a nationwide campaign, collaborating with six local social media personalities with a focus on food, family and sustainable living. The team offered up helpful tips and tricks on how to be greener and save money by using every last scrap of food in the house. The star of the event was the freshness-keeping capabilities of LG V+ refrigerator.

A woman takes a few bites of a slice of watermelon she just took out of the LG refrigerator.

In addition to sharing their personal secrets for shopping and cooking smarter, all the content creators believed that most consumers don’t think enough about the quality of their food storage solution, thinking that cooling is the same for all refrigerators. Creating the perfect conditions to seal in goodness and flavor, the LG V+ is ideal for preserving leftovers – a key component in reducing the amount of food we throw away.

With the NatureFRESH system, LG’s V+ refrigerator features both Fresh Balancer, a drawer that offers different temperature and humidity settings for various types of fruits and vegetables, as well as Fresh Converter, a dedicated drawer for keeping meat, fish or vegetables market-fresh until needed.

A close-up of LG V+ refrigerator’s innovative Fresh Balancer drawer on top of an opened Fresh Converter drawer, the former holding fruits and the latter storing vegetables.

“With NatureFRESH and Fresh Balancer, you don’t have to worry about rushing to make use of all your produce – a constant temperature and the right level of humidity means there’s no wilting or freezing and importantly, no unnecessary waste,” said green lifestyle blogger, Ramona Constantinescu.

Two women prepare healthy dishes in a kitchen with food from the LG refrigerator.

By extending the lifespan of ingredients, LG’s fridge supports culinary creativity, helping families to concoct delicious meals and snacks with leftover items.

“The NatureFRESH system keeps food fresh for longer, which lets you combine unused produce and remnants of previous meals in all sorts of imaginative ways,” said Prăjiturela, whose food blog and Instagram have amassed tens of thousands of avid followers. “A few remaining berries, what’s left of a can of tinned peaches, some old amaretti biscuits from the cupboard and a spoonful of honey, and you’ve got yourself a tasty treat.”

Two women enjoy the healthy fresh meals they prepared earlier in front of an LG refrigerator.

Each of the influencers involved in the campaign featured the LG V+ refrigerator in their Instagram, Facebook, YouTube channels and blogs, generating over one million views and thousands of posts across social media. LG Romania’s efforts boosted local awareness of and interest in reducing food waste while highlighting how the company’s impressive new fridge can be an important part of the solution.

A company concerned with the well-being of the planet and its citizens, LG is a firm believer in taking action locally to effect change globally. Among the company’s many other efforts to make a positive difference are the responsible disposal and recycling of electronics components in every country it operates, programs to improve the availability of safe drinking water in developing regions, and a commitment to using sustainable manufacturing processes at all of its production facilities worldwide.

Why LG Brought ASMR Mode to the LG G8X ThinQ

What does whispering into a microphone, tapping fingernails on a hard surface and wind blowing through trees have in common? They’re all part of an odd collection of activities that fall under the term Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. Most people, of course, just call it ASMR and it’s of the most viewed content categories on YouTube.

A concept image visualizing the notion of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), with a woman speaking directly into LG’s smartphone.

LG, no stranger to smartphone audio innovation, decided that its LG G8XThinQ just might be a more interesting smartphone with ASMR recording capability. So after months of hard work and dedication, LG engineers were able to transform a forward-thinking idea into a working prototype, as the vision for pushing the boundaries of sound recording on a phone became a reality.

An LG MC sound engineer records sounds from different objects via LG G8X ThinQ’s microphone.

With the LG G8XThinQ, users can maximize the sensitivity of the microphone with the press of a button while filming a video. The phone’s ASMR feature then digitizes the analog sounds to minimize errors from the original source. The result is audio content that’s so clear, so clean… purer than anything recorded on a smartphone to date.

LG’s sound engineer tests and calibrates the sound quality of the ASMR feature incorporated in LG’s G8X ThinQ smartphone.

Behind the scenes, it took LG audio engineers over six months of recording, listening, tweaking, re-recording hundreds of objects from sticky slime to a loofah sponge in numerous environments before being satisfied with the quality of the ASMR technology they were introducing to a smartphone, an industry first.

LG’s sound engineer collects the audio of a metallic bowl being hit with a stick.

The team also took its ASMR Mode outside, where the LG G8XThinQ was used to capture the satisfying and relaxing natural sounds of rustling grass and leaves, falling raindrops and crunching pebbles. What makes ASMR Mode on the LG G8XThinQ unique is the fact that it doesn’t just record sounds clearly, it does so in high quality without introducing any more noise.

LG G8X ThinQ records the detailed ASMR sound of someone cutting potatoes on a chopping board.

LG engineers tasked with sampling all kinds of foods and drinks to determine how well the LG G8XThinQ captured the most mundane sounds. Normally healthy senior research engineer Song Ho-sung found himself guzzling nearly a dozen cans of soda in about an hour in order to capture the sounds of gulping and carbonated bubbles rising.

“Despite gaining a few pounds, I’m delighted with the results,” Song said between burps.

LG G8X ThinQ capturing the ASMR sounds of raining outside.

Top ASMR YouTubers in Korea were also consulted as part of the development process. And as most YouTubers already know, Korean content creators aren’t shy about latching onto the next big social media trend and taking it to a whole new level. So hearing what this group had to say about LG’s ASMR feature was most illuminating.

LG TVs FIRST TO EXCEED OFFICIAL INDUSTRY DEFINITION FOR 8K ULTRA HD TVS

Real 8K 2020 LG SIGNATURE OLED and
LG NanoCell TVs Deliver True-to-Life Viewing Experience

Front view of LG’s 2020 Real 8K OLED TV with the LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K logo positioned above.
SEOUL, Dec. 16, 2019 – LG Electronics (LG) announced that its TVs are the first in the world to exceed the strict requirements established by the Consumer Technology Association to define the new generation of 8K Ultra HD products and services delivering four times more detail than 4K TV and 16 times more than HDTV.

The official industry 8K Ultra HD designation and logo were developed by the U.S.-based CTA to set a clear definition for retailers and consumers to help better identify products that meet key 8K Ultra HD requirements. LG’s Real 8K TVs, which will make their debut at CES® 2020, are the first to exceed CTA’s specific requirements including those related to resolution, digital inputs1, high dynamic range, upscaling2, bit depth and measurement methodology.

The CTA based its 8K definition on the threshold specified by the International Committee for Display Metrology.3 The measurement guidelines based on contrast modulation (CM) state that resolution must meet a 50 percent minimum CM threshold along with at least 33 million active pixels in order to qualify as 8K UHD. Other industry standard-setting bodies such as the International Organization for Standardization also use Contrast Modulation as the industry benchmark.

Starting in January 2020, every LG 8K TV will display CTA’s 8K UHD logo. New 2020 models build on LG’s leadership position as the only manufacturer offering Real 8K TVs in two categories – OLED (LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K) and LCD (LG 8K NanoCell TV) – all delivering CM values in the 90 percent range, while some other models in the industry remain in the low double digits.

Third-party testing by the global product testing and certification organization Intertek verified that the 75-inch LG NanoCell 8K TV far surpasses the CM measurement requirement set by ICDM, with the unit returning an impressive 90 percent CM horizontally and 91 percent CM vertically. Another leading international testing firm, VDE (Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker) reported nearly identical CM results.

“CTA is the consumer technology industry authority, and LG’s use of the CTA 8K UHD logo communicates a clear message to consumers that a Real 8K TV from LG will deliver the viewing experience they expect,” said Nam Ho-jun, senior vice president of R&D at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “We expect LG’s 2020 8K TV lineup to set a new standard for the TV industry.”

1  Digital inputs: LG TVs are compatible with the widest selection of 8K content formats, including HEVC, YouTube’s AV1, VP9s and also HDMI, USB and network connection.

2  Upscaling: LG TVs offer AI upscaling, based on deep learning network.

3  Among other things, to earn the CTA 8K Ultra HD logo, a display must meet a minimum of 50 percent contrast modulation using a 1×1 grill pattern measured in accordance with the established guidelines for measurement of visible resolution specified in version 1.03c, section 7.8, of the International Display Measurement Standard by the International Committee for Display Metrology.

LG Introduces Air Fry and Knock-On InstaView Technology to Connected Ovens

New Cooking Innovations Make Food Preparation Easier, Faster and Healthier

Side view of the LG InstaView ThinQ™ Range in the kitchen

SEOUL, Dec. 12, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) is delivering a better cooking experience at home with its new LG InstaView ThinQ™ Range with Air Fry. The complete cooking solution integrates air frying and the company’s popular InstaView™ technology with AI-powered advanced customer service and connectivity to smart cooking platforms in a seamless package that inspires users to create nutritious meals in the comfort of their own homes.

With the 2020 LG InstaView ThinQ Range’s new Air Fry feature, users can create delicious, guilt-free dishes right in their oven. With up to 6.3-cubic feet of oven capacity, there’s no need for separate air fry appliances that contribute to kitchen clutter and help create healthier dishes with significantly less oil compared to traditional deep frying. LG’s True Convection technology circulates hot air at high speeds for crunchy-on-the-outside, juicy-on-the-inside goodness that’s evenly cooked throughout. And because this means no preheating is required, meals go from fridge to table faster than conventional ovens.

With InstaView technology, tapping twice on the oven’s glass window turns on the interior oven light for easy visual monitoring of the dish as it’s cooking – no need to open the oven door, which slows down the cooking process, or fumble for the oven light button. What’s more, EasyClean and Self Clean help to maintain a cleaner oven for outstanding performance. Without the use of any chemicals, EasyClean removes light food residue with the power of steam in only 10 minutes while Self Clean employs high heat to eliminate tougher splatter from the oven’s interior.

The advanced range works with the LG ThinQ app so users can cook like a professional right at home with access to hundreds of thousands of recipes from smart cooking partners such as SideChef, Innit and Tovala. Sending step-by-step cooking instructions from a smartphone to the oven allows cooking mode and temperature to be set automatically for dishes that come out every time.

The new range supports LG’s AI service solution, Proactive Customer Care, to alert users of potential problems and offering personalized support. And by connecting to the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa smart speakers, LG InstaView ThinQ Range can be controlled and monitored from any room in the house.

“Eating healthier meals with added convenience is at the heart of the new LG InstaView ThinQ Range with Air Fry,” said Dan Song, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “And faster cooking time with less cleaning means less time spent in the kitchen and more time for family and leisure. This is what we mean by innovation for a better life.”

The new 2020 LG InstaView ThinQ™ Range with Air Fry will make its debut at CES® 2020 on January 7 in booth #11100 of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Follow other exciting CES announcements from LG on social media using #LGCES2020.
