Record-High Sales for Home Appliance Unit, Strong B2B Profitability

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, July 30, 2019 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced record second quarter and first half revenues with consolidated sales of KRW 15.63 trillion (USD 13.40 billion) and operating profit of KRW 652.3 billion (USD 559.4 million) for the period covering April-June 2019. Compared to the same period last year, sales were 4.1 percent higher with operating income down 15.4 percent. Record home appliance profits and strong business solutions profitability offset smaller operating income for home entertainment products and losses from vehicle components and mobile communications.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company reported record sales of KRW 6.10 trillion (USD 5.23 billion) in the second quarter, the highest for the business unit in the history of LG Electronics. Revenue growth was especially strong in Korea and regions such as North America, Europe and the Middle East, increasing 16.1 percent from the second quarter of 2018. Operating income of KRW 717.5 billion (USD 615.3 million) was the highest ever for the April-June period. The business unit recorded strong profitability on the back of stable growth, increased sales of high demand products such as air conditioners and continuous cost reduction activities.

The LG Home Entertainment Company generated second-quarter revenues of KRW 3.67 trillion (USD 3.15 billion), a decrease of 4.5 percent from the same period the previous year due to a decline in demand in regions such as Europe and Latin America where major sporting events in the second quarter of 2018 generated strong sales. Operating income of KRW 205.6 billion (USD 176.3 million) declined from the previous quarter due to higher investments in light of greater competition in key markets and exchange rate depreciation. The business unit expects to see a growth in demand in premium products such as OLED TVs, NanoCell TVs and large-screen Ultra HD TVs next quarter.

The LG Mobile Communications Company recorded second-quarter 2019 sales of KRW 1.61 trillion (USD 1.38 billion), 21.3 percent lower than the same period last year due to stagnant demand in the smartphone market and continued aggressive pricing by Chinese brands. Sales increased 6.8 percent from the first quarter but the business united reported an operating loss of KRW 313 billion (USD 268.4 million) as a result of higher marketing investment to support the launch of new models and additional costs related to relocating smartphone production to Vietnam. The introduction of competitive mass-tier smartphones and growing demand for 5G products are expected to contribute to improved performance in the third quarter.

The LG Vehicle Component Solutions Company posted quarterly revenues of KRW 1.42 trillion (USD 1.22 billion), an increase of 63 percent from the second quarter last year. Strong sales of infotainment products and an increase in demand for electric vehicle components resulted in the stronger sales. An operating loss of KRW 55.80 billion (USD 47.8 million) was primarily due to initial production expenditures related to the ramp up of new projects and delays in setting up manufacturing of new applications such as center information displays (CID). In the quarters ahead, the company will focus on stabilizing the supply of components to major customers and prioritizing cost reductions related to new projects.

The LG Business Solutions Company reported second-quarter sales of KRW 675.5 billion (USD 579.29 million), 14.8 percent higher than the same quarter the previous year and 8 percent higher than the previous quarter due to greater demand for LED and OLED commercial display products and solar panels in Europe and the United States. Operating income of KRW 58.1 billion (USD 49.82 million) was 49 percent higher year-on-year and 4.7 percent higher quarter-on-quarter mostly through improved efficiencies in cost and productivity. Going forward, growth in both information displays and solar modules are expected to remain strong.

ENVISIONING A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE IN AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST WHILE STAYING COOL

By LG Gulf Staff

ㅤㅤ

Scorching temperatures are the norm across much of the Middle East and Africa, with temperatures of 50o C (122o F) being the rule rather than the exception. The importance of reliable air conditioning takes on a whole new dimension when it’s hot enough to fry an egg on the hood of a car or burn your hand attempting to open its door.

An upper view of Dubai with many buildings including Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower

But dependence on heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is also a major concern across the region due to rising energy consumption due to growing populations and greater industrial demand. To counter this trend, local governments are putting more eco-conscious energy management policies in place with a view to ensuring greater sustainability in the long term.

A company that has long understood the need to conserve energy resources, Dubai-based LG Gulf has amassed a full suite of high-efficiency solutions tailored to cope with the region’s challenging climate, fully capable of meeting current and future demand for the region’s cooling needs.

At the LG Air Solution tour, a presenter discusses LG’s advanced commercial HVAC systems in front of attendees.

To showcase its advanced commercial HVAC systems, LG recently hosted an LG Air Solution tour in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – a nation that shares LG’s forward-thinking outlook and is currently working toward meeting the United Nation’s sustainable development goals.

An inside view of a hotel’s chiller facility equipped with LG’s unique oil-free magnetic chillers.

To kick-off the tour, LG showed how its highly efficient HVAC solutions are implemented across many areas, such as hospitality, healthcare and district cooling. The company demonstrated how its industry-leading solutions are helping businesses worldwide achieve their green targets and new levels of energy efficiency. Guests were given a rare opportunity to venture into a hotel’s chiller plant to witness how LG’s unique oil-free magnetic chillers deliver energy-efficient performance to a 130,000 square meter hotel.

The audience also paid a visit to LG’s Dubai Air Conditioning Academy where the company trains technicians, dealers and contractors in the finer points of its HVAC systems to raise the bar for customer service and after-sales assistance. Experts at LG educated public officials on how an Energy Management System (EMS) optimizes power delivery and consumption for microgrid environments.

Then it was onto the Sustainable City, a fully functioning property built by Dubai-based Diamond Developers to illustrate how urban centers can embrace environmentally friendly living without sacrificing modern conveniences. Guests were shown the important role LG plays in facilitating this smart city with its proprietary HVAC solutions, anchored by LG’s Multi V 5 VRF system. With industry-leading energy efficiency and advanced features such as Auto Dust Removal, LG’s HVAC technology is implemented across the Sustainable City.

Through the event, LG clearly demonstrated how it is aligned with the initiatives of the region to promote sustainability through advanced HVAC technologies and involvement in creating a more efficient infrastructure. Around the world, LG is helping to make businesses and homes more comfortable and cost-effective while easing the burden on cities and the environment.

INSPIRING CANADIANS TO COOK AND EAT TOGETHER

“Just like grandma used to make.”

A top view of forks, cookies, cupcakes and recipe memos placed on the table

It’s a phrase many of us are familiar with – the warm joy that comes with a delicious, comforting recipe. A recipe that reminds you of home, of your family’s dinner table, of late-night conversations and quality time spent together.

Freshly-baked cookies are placed on the oven tray.

To better understand Canadians’ cooking and eating habits in the 21st century, LG Canada commissioned a nationwide survey as the starting point of its LG Kitchen Memory Rescue Campaign. The survey of 1,000 adult participants found that while Canadians are longing for opportunities to cook and eat together and create meaningful memories over food, like consumers in many other developed countries, they are spending less time doing so because of busy schedules and the ease of convenient meal options.

Two ladies behold ingredients while pouring them down from a pen.

Most notably, the proliferation of delivery services like Uber Eats and Foodora have drastically altered our eating culture with one recent study finding that 29 percent of all Canadians have used a food delivery app at least once.*

However, more than three-quarters of those responding to LG Canada’s survey reported they are worried about missing out on valuable family time as a result of not cooking and eating together, and more than 40 percent are concerned they may lose a piece of their heritage by not recreating beloved recipes passed down from previous generations.

Through the Kitchen Memory Rescue Campaign, LG Canada is inspiring Canadians to cook together more often, to embrace new memories and keep cherished family traditions alive. As part of the campaign, LG showed how its range of advanced, user-centric kitchen appliances makes it easy to create mouth-watering meals – and treasured moments – in the warmth and comfort of home.

A lady in red shirts knocks on the transparent display panel of the LG InstaView Door-in-Door® refrigerator.

To encourage and educate Canadians, LG partnered with celebrity author, baker and chef Anna Olson – the popular host of Food Network shows Bake with Anna Olson, Fresh with Anna Olson, and Sugar. Working with Anna, the ambassador for the LG Kitchen Memory Rescue Campaign, LG demonstrated how the power of food connects people and fosters a sense of community.

A lady in red shirts opens the door of the LG ProBake Convection® with the casserole inside the oven.

To generate awareness of the campaign, and consideration for the LG appliances, LG collaborated with Anna in a two-day media tour across Canada. Throughout the tour, Anna shared her four exclusive seasonal recipes with media and weaved in the survey findings while highlighting the exceptional quality of LG’s kitchen appliances. The recipes incorporated key product messaging, focusing on the LG ProBake Convection® oven, while also incorporating the LG InstaView Door-in-Door® refrigerator and QuadWash® dishwasher.

A lady in red shirts uses the LG QuadWash dishwasher to wash a transparent cooking bowl.

As part of the partnership, Anna also appears in two campaign videos in which she helps families rescue and revive old family recipes (https://bit.ly/2XMiaY5). The videos have inspired Canadians to get back in the kitchen, cook up almost-forgotten favorites and forge meaningful memories together. Both videos also star LG’s innovative kitchen appliances, including the LG InstaView Door-in-Door refrigerator, LG QuadWash dishwasher, and LG ProBake Convection range.

Two ladies stand next to each other and discuss the food they cooked using the LG ProBake Convection® oven.

Together, LG and Anna are helping Canadians reconnect with their heritage and come together through celebrating the ritual of preparing and enjoying meals “just like grandma used to make.” Life is good when we take the time to savor it and acknowledge the things that make us feel special and provide a sense of belonging. Anchored by LG’s appliances, the kitchen can truly be a space for sharing our love for each other and for good food, just as it has been throughout Canada’s history.

EXPERIENCING MEXICO CITY FROM A BIRDS-EYE VIEW WITH LG Q60

LG Q60 in the palm of a man’s hand flies over Mexico City in the helicopter to take photos of the city’s landmarks.

By LG Mexico Staff

In just a few short years, the smartphone camera has become the de facto killer feature for many consumers. To take great pictures, a camera needs a good lens to gather light and a high-quality sensor. Cutting corners on either can mean the difference between simply stunning, and simply another snapshot.

A pilot and a passenger take photos in the helicopter by using LG Q60.

The pioneer of wide-angle cameras for smartphones, LG Mexico invited editors from twenty of Mexico’s most popular publications to Mexico City to meet its new, competitively-priced LG Q60 smartphone, and to experience something a little different.

A selfie of three people in the helicopter taken by the pilot

Five days before the announcement of the launch of LG Q60 in Mexico, the VIPs received a kit containing the smartphone, background information, a mysterious ticket and instructions to wait for a chauffeur to pick them up at a designated time on the special day. None of the guests envisioned they would be spending the day taking wide angle shots of their beloved city… from a helicopter!

With a rear camera module featuring three lenses, the versatile camera is a key selling point of the LG Q60. From high above, stunning images of some of Mexico City’s most famous landmarks were enjoyed and captured from a completely new angle. Chapultepec Castle, the Mexican Revolution Monument, Azteca Stadium, the skyscrapers lining Paseo de la Reforma Avenue, and other historical sites were on the helicopter’s flight path that day.

From a Seed to a Tree: LG Helps Reforest a National Park in Spain

The LG G8S ThinQ is attached to a drone in an effort to analyze the environmental state of the Alto Tajo Natural Park as part of the LG Smart Green project.

By LG Spain Staff

A few years ago, Spain suffered one of the worst wildfires in its history when a powerful blaze decimated a large part of Alto Tajo Natural Park in Guadalajara Province. The recovery effort to reforest the park would be a monumental task involving many organizations and individuals across the country. LG Spain stepped in to play its part, employing its ingenuity and advanced products to give back to nature, and help the park and the nation to heal.

The associates of LG Smart Green project stand together behind the drone which is equipped with the LG G8S ThinQ smartphone.

Last year, LG Spain kicked off its LG Smart Green project with a key objective to bring Alto Tajo Natural Park to its former glory by using technology to help in the reforestation effort. Not only do trees beautify the landscape, they constitute an entire ecosystem for many species and soak up excess CO2 in the atmosphere. Since March of this year, LG has planted approximately 2 million seeds throughout the vast park, from which 1.5 million trees are expected to develop. Another 500,000 trees were planted by organizations and individuals involved in the LG Smart Green project.

A project’s associates equip the drone with some analytic devices while another man records it with a camera.

The reforestation effort was carried out with the help of LG technology. Working in partnership with CO2 Revolution, a local startup, LG devised a plan involving a high-tech drone, an LG G8SThinQ smartphone (dubbed LG G8 Smart Green) and an LG gram laptop. The innovative process employed by LG and CO2 Revolution consisted of three steps. First, the smartphone captured information collected during the drone’s scanning flights. Next, the data and images were uploaded to the LG gram laptop which used advanced software and a specially designed algorithm to identify optimal locations to disperse the seeds. Then a CO2 Revolution pilot flew the drone to the target sites using the phone and laptop to plant the seeds.

A female associate looks at the LG G8S ThinQ after detaching it from the drone.

The reforestation project gave LG Spain an opportunity to help the environment recover, earning the team respect and thanks from the local communities most affected by the devastating fire. The project also captivated national news media and gained significant attention across social platforms, leading to much needed conversations and interest in caring for nature.

A project representative gives an interview with a local broadcast media.

And Alto Tajo Natural Park is just the beginning. LG hopes to see every Spanish citizen plant one tree and engage their friends and family online using the hashtag #UnaPersonaUnÁrbol (One Person, One Tree) with the goal of seeing 47 million new trees by 2030.

LG Spain is setting an example for others to follow, bettering the environment through technology and using its influence to raise awareness of how each Spaniard can contribute to a good cause. And across the globe, LG is leveraging its technology, resources and unreserved optimism to ensure a greener, healthier planet for current generations and those yet to come.

The improved camera – with the widest field of view to date at 137˚ – allows users to enjoy continuous zoom capability without any lag or color distortion. The exception camera performance of the G8SThinQ was even recognized by VCX-Forum, a Germany-based ratings organization, which ranked the LG device best among the industry’s current smartphones. On the front the device sports a standard lens and the Z Camera, which supports features such as Portrait and Spotlight to help users raise their selfie game. The addition of the Z Camera’s ability to quickly measure distances helps produce portraits with more depth and feel. Spotlight detects the user’s facial curvature and simulates studio lighting to bring a professional quality and dramatic edge to selfies. With Video Depth Control, videos shot on the LG G8SThinQ benefit from a beautiful bokeh effect that puts the subject in sharp focus against a soft, blurred background. And for users tired of shaky video footage, LG G8SThinQ comes ready with Steady Cam which delivers smooth, clear videos without the use of a gimbal.

SEOUL, June 27, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) is licensing its patented refrigerator door-ice making technology for use in refrigerators sold by GE Appliances, which Haier acquired in 2016. Terms were not disclosed.

Dr. I.P. Park, president and Chief Technology Officer of LG Electronics, and Juha Varelius, CEO of Qt, shake hands after signing an MOU.

SEOUL, June 26, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with The Qt Company, the Finnish-based software developer behind the Qt Project, to expand its existing collaboration on webOS. The expanded partnership will focus on embedding LG’s open source webOS platform in future automotive, robotics and smart home devices as well as positioning webOS as a reference operation system of Qt.

The partnership will guarantee more efficient management of resources required to port Qt and minimize gaps between Qt and webOS, leading to the best user experience for AI and IoT customers. With Q’s expertise in user experience (UX) and LG’s knowledge of products, the collaboration will create a powerful development environment for developers, engineers and designers to create innovative and immersive apps and devices.

“Our vision to create highly innovative, AI-powered and content-ready smart embedded devices using the webOS platform is more attainable with Qt as a partner,” said Dr. I.P. Park, president and CTO of LG Electronics. “Designing and developing these extremely complex systems requires more advanced software development capabilities than ever before and close collaboration between hardware and software experts is the foundation of this collaboration with Qt.”

Qt is a software tool for developing Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to deliver intuitive and modern UI/UX design and powerful touch functions in consumer and automotive devices. Since 2014, LG has relied on the application development framework of Qt to provide an intuitive and easy user experience for smart TVs and information displays running webOS. Qt will also play a key role in the development of webOS Auto, planned for deployment in future automotive infotainment systems.

“LG has been a consumer electronics leader for generations, which is one of the many reasons they’ve become such a trusted partner of Qt,” said Juha Varelius, CEO of Qt. “With its initiative to expand the reach of webOS into rapidly-growing markets, LG is underscoring the massive potential of Qt-enabled connected experiences. By collaborating with LG on this initiative, we’re able to make it easy as possible for our customers to build devices that bring a new definition to the word ‘smart’.”

5G IS THE ERA OF LG

The LG V50ThinQ 5G is off to a flying start. The new 5G smartphone from LG saw an impressive 100,000 units snapped up by eager South Korean early adopters in its first week of availability, quadruple the sales of its predecessor, V40ThinQ. While most customers are interested in the speed benefits of 5G, the phone’s smooth rear glass design and performance enhancement (thanks to improved cooling) certainly adds to its appeal factor.

With the burgeoning success of its first-ever 5G handset, LG is leveraging this opportunity to ensure that consumers world-over recognize and understand the importance of 5G in their lives and the extent to which LG has contributed to this technology.

The original rollout date of the LG V50ThinQ 5G in Korea was delayed for a few days to allow the carriers to work out some early network jitters but this is to be expected for such new tech. With all three South Korean operators offering the LG V50ThinQ 5G with their 5G service launch, consumers have been inundated with a crash course on all things 5G which the local media have helped to disseminate in an effort to make Koreans some of the most 5G-literate consumers in the world.

A bar graph from WISPRO shows LG has the highest number of 5G-related patents registered with the United States Patents and Trademark Office.

The V50ThinQ also made its public debut in the United Kingdom at a London event hosted by carrier EE at the end of May. LG’s 5G phone is now running on the first 5G network in the UK starting in the cities of London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast. V50ThinQ is also available in Australia as of earlier this month on the country’s leading mobile operator, Telstra.

But LG’s first-move status in 5G shouldn’t be surprising. According to TechIPm, a leading U.S. patent analysis agency, LG maintained a definite edge over its competitors in the 4G (LTE / LTE-A) standard patent category, ranking first in each of the past five years. And according to patent law firm WISPRO, LG looks to be the early leader in 5G patents as well. Through its research, WISPRO found that LG currently has the highest number of 5G-related patents registered with the United States Patents and Trademark Office. With its continuous drive to develop new technologies and meaningful innovations, LG appears well placed to retain its mantle of “patent king” in the 5G era.

“Already with a significant advantage in 5G patents, LG has an excellent opportunity to remind the global smartphone market of the strength of its technology and ability to innovate,” said Park Won-jae, an analyst at Mirae Asset Daewoo.

LG cemented its name as a leader in 5G with the launch of the LG V50ThinQ 5G in the United States, the world’s largest premium smartphone market where LG has maintained a double-digit share of the smartphone market for the last five years. Launched on May 31, LG V50ThinQ 5G works on Sprint’s 5G network in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Kansas City with Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix and Washington D.C. to join the network later this year.
