SEOUL, Sep. 10, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) has joined forces with NVIDIA to make gamers’ dreams come true, adding support for NVIDIA G-SYNC® Compatibility to its stunning 2019 OLED TVs (model 65/55E9, model 77/65/55C9). LG’s newest OLED products offer blazing speed and stunning color reproduction, their superior performance and image quality validated through NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible testing to ensure a smooth and immersive gaming experience without flickering, tearing or stuttering.

With exceptional picture quality, low input lag and an ultra-fast response time, LG OLED TVs have already earned a reputation for delivering an optimized gaming performance. The addition of NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatibility raises the bar once more, guaranteeing even more immersive big-screen PC gaming on the company’s industry-leading 4K OLED models, available in 55- to 77-inch screen sizes.

LG’s self-emissive OLED technology takes users deeper into the pulsating action of their favorite games, employing the precision of individual pixel control to produce incredibly realistic images. Along with infinite contrast and highly accurate color reproduction, the TVs offer an ultra-fast response time with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Input lag – which can make the difference between victory and defeat – is barely perceptible at a 6 milliseconds range for 1440p content at 120 Hz and 13 milliseconds range for 4K content at 60 Hz. The minimal input lag of LG’s OLED TVs, of less than a frame, with no loss in picture quality, makes them the best displays for gaming.

What’s more, LG’s latest OLED TV models support a variety of popular HDR formats that further elevate the gaming experience. Users can play compatible titles in dynamic HDR10 or Dolby Vision (at up to 120 frames per second for Full HD content) taking advantage of HDMI 2.1 specifications such as auto low latency mode (ALLM), enhanced audio return channel (eARC), and variable refresh rate (VRR).

To heighten viewers’ sense of immersion when playing games or watching fast content, LG’s 2019 OLED TVs support cinematic audio formats including Dolby Atmos and groundbreaking Dolby TrueHD lossless sound technology. With the best premium audio and video format options covered, users can hear and see content as originally intended by its creators. These models also incorporate LG’s deep learning-based AI sound for captivating virtual 5.1 surround.

“It’s no secret LG OLED TVs are coveted by gamers world over and we are committed to optimizing the OLED gaming experience for them,” said Sam Kim, senior vice president of the TV product planning division of Home Entertainment Company at LG. “With NVIDIA G-SYNC adoption, we are showing that OLED TVs have the support and backing of the world’s top gaming hardware brand to make their products look their best.”

“We are excited to bring G-SYNC Compatible support to LG’s 2019 OLED TVs and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate support to our GeForce RTX 20-Series GPUs,” said Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “Gamers will be blown away by the responsiveness and the lifelike visuals on these TVs when playing the latest PC games featuring real-time ray-tracing powered by GeForce.”

NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible support for LG’s 2019 OLED TVs will become available in select markets via a firmware upgrade in the weeks to follow.

WHY UNDERSTANDING TV DISPLAY RESOLUTION MATTERS

“Resolution is a measure of the ability to discriminate picture detail
i.e. the ability to distinguish two adjacent spots on the screen.” 1

With the advent of larger screens and 8K display technology it’s more important for consumers to understand how resolution impacts the delivery of true-to-life viewing experience. There are some key concepts that need to be taken into consideration when evaluating the quality of high resolution displays and TVs, especially 8K TVs.

LG’s 75-inch NanoCell 8K television seen from at a 15-degree angle

Resolution and Display Quality
8K is the highest definition for televisions available on the market today. 8K TV has four times the number of pixels as 4K TVs, also known as Ultra High Definition (Ultra HD). Consumers today have come to equate the number of pixels on a screen with display quality and typically assume that the more pixels a display has, the better the display will look.

But simply counting pixels fails to capture other important elements of modern display quality, including the resolution the viewer actually sees. Resolution is often confused with horizontal pixel count such 3,840 pixels (4K) and 7,680 pixels (8K). What’s certain is that a poorly designed display will have lower display quality (i.e. image or text blurriness) even with a high pixel count if adjacent pixels are not clearly distinguishable from one another.

A side view of the promotional stand for the 8K LG SIGNATURE OLED TV lineup

“Resolution is the number of pixels (or lines) that can be
adequately distinguished across the screen.” 2

For this reason, the industry standards organization, the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM), established an international set of guidelines for resolution measurement that take such factors into consideration.

International Standard For Resolution
The work of the ICDM, comprised of scientists, engineers, corporate researchers and key members of the display industry, cannot be understated. Without TV measurement standards, it would be impossible for consumers to be able to distinguish one product from another because none of the marketing claims could be confirmed. That’s why major display manufacturers such as LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics are members of the ICDM and pledge to abide by the organization’s recommendations.

The letters C and M displayed on the screen with dots the size of 0.216 x 0.216 millimeter to measure the resolution according to the Contrast Modulation method

The ICDM states that Contrast Modulation (CM), rather than pixel count, most accurately and adequately measures true display resolution and recommends that manufacturers adopt CM when describing resolution quality. This standard of using Contrast Modulation has been adopted by other international standards setting bodies such as the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

“Contrast modulation (Michelson contrast) is considered by some
to be the best and most complete single-metric description
of the ability of a display to exhibit information.” 3

Contrast Modulation measures the ability to distinguish a pattern of alternating white and black lines (representative of pixels) and is expressed as a percentage or ratio. Under the ICDM’s standard for measuring display performance (Information Display Measurements Standard 7.8), contrast modulation is calculated as follows:

The mathematical equation of the Contrast Modulation method

Lw and Lk indicate the luminance of white and black lines. The higher the CM percentage, the clearer the images and text on a display will appear:

A diagram explaining the Contrast Modulation method that indicates pixel width and the luminance level of black and white lines

For industry consistency, the ICDM established minimum Contrast Modulation standards. For text and graphics, that threshold is 50 percent or more while for images, the minimum is 25 percent. Although the ICDM has different recommendations for text and graphics than for images, the generally accepted combined minimum is 50 percent. In other words, a TV with a width of 7,680 pixels is only truly 8K if it satisfies the 50 percent minimum Contrast Modulation threshold otherwise it cannot be called “real 8K”.

LG Satisfies The Standards
In tests run in accordance with display industry standards mentioned above, both LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K and LG 8K NanoCell TV recorded a CM in the 90 percent range, satisfying the industry standard by a wide margin. International testing and ratings agency Intertek tested LG’s 75-inch NanoCell 8K television and found that the unit easily met the CM standard set by ICDM using an 8K test pattern. According to Intertek, the LG TV measured 90 percent CM on the horizontal axis and 91 percent vertically. Another world-class testing and certification association, Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) , tested the same LG TV model and reported similar results with CM measurements in the 90 percent range.

A concept image of the LG NanoCell 8K TVs that claims the TV satisfies international standards

The Picture Is Clear
By using consistent display measurement methodologies, consumers no longer have to guess if the product description they’re reading is consistent from one model to the next. But for standards to work, industry members must commit. There is no debate that Contrast Modulation is the most honest and accurate method for measuring and reporting resolution. What’s critical now is for manufacturers to adhere to the standards that they have committed to follow.

REAL 8K OLED AND NANOCELL TVS FROM LG BEGIN GLOBAL ROLLOUT

LG’s 8K TVs Satisfy and Exceed Industry Standards for Measurement of Real 8K Resolution

Three models admiring the LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K TV while it displays an enormous tree.

SEOUL, Sep. 3, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) begins rolling out the world’s first 8K OLED TV (model 88Z9) and its LG 8K NanoCell TV (model 75SM99) this month in global markets starting in Australia, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the United States. As an emerging leader in 8K technology, LG’s 8K TVs also have the distinction of surpassing the resolution measurement criteria as set forth in the Information Display Measurements Standard (IDMS) established by the respected International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM) which says that the stated resolution of a display does not depend on only meeting or exceeding a specific number of pixels, but also on whether those pixels can be adequately distinguished from one another in order to deliver the stated resolution.

The ICDM has defined the Contrast Modulation (CM) measurement which describes accurately and quantitatively how distinguishable the neighboring pixels are from each another. For any TV display to deliver the resolution indicated by its pixel count, the ICDM requires the minimum CM value to exceed a threshold of 25 percent for images and 50 percent for text. An 8K TV with a CM value that is lower than these required thresholds does not deliver real 8K, even though the TV may in fact have the sufficient number (7,680 x 4,320) of pixels. Tests performed in accordance with these universally-referenced industry standards resulted in both LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K and LG 8K NanoCell TVs achieving CM values in the 90 percent range, guaranteeing that viewers will be able to actually experience all of the additional detail in the 8K content when viewed on their LG 8K televisions.

LG’s 8K TVs stun with lavish detail and vibrant, lifelike colors that stand as testament to LG’s unrivalled display technology. As the world’s first 8K OLED TV not to mention LG’s largest OLED TV to date, the 88-inch LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K TV (model 88Z9) delivers 8K Ultra HD resolution (7,680 x 4,320) with 33 million self-emitting pixels, equivalent to 16-times the number of pixels in a Full HD TV and four-times that of a UHD TV. A winner of this year’s iF Design Award and Red Dot Award, LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K boasts a sophisticated, minimalist design that features a brushed aluminum stand and a virtually bezel-less display, and comes with an integrated 80W speaker system for powerful sound.

LG’s 75-inch 8K NanoCell TV also delivers a total immersive experience thanks to an 8K picture with impressive color, contrast and detail. LG’s Nano Display technology renders stunningly sharp images on a truly grand scale. Nano Color filters out impurities to enhance color reproduction and Nano Black – advanced Full Array Local Dimming Pro technology optimized for 8K – precisely controls the TV’s backlighting for deeper blacks and greater contrast.

Both 8K TVs boast effective 8K upscaling and improved noise reduction, upgraded from four- to up to six-steps. The result is a seamless 8K picture when converting content from native 4K (3,840 x 2,160) or Full HD (1,920 x 1,080). This first-class performance is enhanced by LG’s second-generation α (Alpha) 9 Gen 2 8K intelligent processor. LG’s advanced chip elevates picture and sound quality using deep learning technology and access to an extensive database, enabling it to recognize source quality and optimize any kind of content. The α9 Gen 2 8K also analyzes ambient conditions to achieve the perfect level of screen brightness at all times.

Rich, resonant audio complements the stellar visual output of the TVs to further enhance viewer immersion. An intelligent algorithm can up-mix two-channel audio to virtual 5.1 surround sound, supplying a three-dimensional soundscape that brings movies, music and sporting events roaring to life. The TVs are also WiSA Ready for wireless home theater with uncompressed 16-bit audio on up to 5.1 channels; an outstanding way to experience the dynamic, crystal-clear sound of Dolby Atmos.

To guarantee memorable, cinematic viewing sessions, LG 8K OLED TV and 8K NanoCell TV feature Cinema HDR, encompassing support for Dolby Vision and Advanced HDR by Technicolor up to 4K and HLG and HDR10 up to 8K.

LG has also future-proofed its 8K TVs by providing four ports that support HDMI 2.1 specifications, which will allow viewers to enjoy 8K content at 60 frames per second. LG 8K TVs are also compatible with automatic low latency mode (ALLM), variable refresh rate (VRR) and enhanced audio return channel (eARC).

For even greater convenience, both the 88Z9 and 75SM99 models will support Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, and be available in over 140 markets.

In select markets these TVs offer built-in versions of the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, providing easy voice control of the TV and connected smart devices and making it simple for users to get the information they want.

“The new 8K TVs show that LG is deeply committed to providing consumers with real 8K as defined by established display industry standards,” said Brian Kwon, president of the Mobile Communications and Home Entertainment companies at LG. “LG 8K OLED and NanoCell TVs aren’t just TVs with more pixels, they also deliver all of our latest display technologies.”

SEOUL, Aug. 29, 2019 — IFA 2019 will be the European launching pad for LG Electronics’ (LG) innovative AI-infused customer service solution, Proactive Customer Care. The service leverages the company’s advanced ThinQ AI to provide personalized support, alerting users to issues with their LG appliance and offering helpful tips and solutions for performance and long product life. The service will initially support LG’s newest front-load washing machines and bottom-freezer refrigerators in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom this year to be followed by other key markets in Europe and North America in 2020.

Using the latest in AI technology, LG Proactive Customer Care is designed to inform LG smart appliance owners of potential problems before they even occur. It can expedite technician visits, if needed, and offer guidance on how to keep LG’s products functioning. Users can take advantage of the service by registering and connecting their appliances via the free LG ThinQ™ app (for Android and iOS).

LG’s innovative AI customer care solution covers everything from installation to maintenance, determining if the customer’s appliance has been installed and is operating correctly upon activation of the app. Customers are greeted with a newsletter upon activation and alerted if a problem is detected, with detailed instructions on how to resolve the issue. Designed to increase customer satisfaction, LG Proactive Customer care is a one-stop service for all questions about the supported LG product.

For example, Proactive Customer Care continuously monitors the bottom-freezer refrigerator’s temperature and offers guidance on the course of action if a fluctuation in temperature exceeding 3°C is detected. The service looks for issues that could potentially cause increases in energy usage and water consumption and provides corrective guidance to improve efficiency and save money. Owners receive regular email reports detailing their appliance’s performance, notification history and current status with reminders for the time to perform routine maintenance.

“LG Proactive Customer Care is a new paradigm in customer service, one that ensures greater value and peace of mind for owners of our smart home appliances,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We will continue to develop innovative smart home solutions for the European market and deliver new ways to enhance convenience for LG appliance owners.”

Visitors to IFA 2019 from September 6-11 can learn more about LG smart appliances with Proactive Customer Care in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin. Follow LG’s IFA activities on social media using #LGIFA2019.

LG CINEBEAM 4K BRINGS IMPRESSIVE PICTURE QUALITY AND SMART CONVENIENCE TO EUROPEANS

Newest Projector Lineup From LG Delivers Superb Cinematic
Viewing Experience Via Advanced Color Technologies

A view of LG CineBeam 4K UHD projector model HU85L producing incredible natural landscapes in a modern, low-lit living room

SEOUL, Aug. 28, 2019 — The new CineBeam 4K UHD projector lineup from LG Electronics (LG) being unveiled for the first time to Europeans at IFA 2019 was developed to meet the growing demand for versatile, smart home cinema solutions. Able to produce amazingly sharp, large-scale images, LG’s first Ultra Short Throw (UST) 4K UHD CineBeam Laser projector (model HU85L) and the LG 4K UHD CineBeam LED projector (model HU70L) will be available in Europe starting next month.

Thanks to LG’s innovative Wheel-less Laser and LED technology, both 4K UHD projectors deliver excellent viewing experiences with incredible color accuracy. The new tech helps each model to produce clearer, more distinct images than traditional Digital Light Processing (DLP) projectors with color wheels, and practically eliminates distracting visual artifacts such as the rainbow effect, clouding and color distortion.

The recipient of multiple accolades including the 2019 CES Innovation Award, Red Dot Design Award and iF Design Award, the HU85L uses a three-channel laser system to generate colors with individual red and blue laser light sources with green created by LG’s exclusive Wheel-less Laser and LED technology and another blue light source. This unique configuration results in amazingly accurate colors, achieving 97 percent of the DCI-P3 color space and up to 12-bit color processing for incredibly detailed and vibrant images of up to 2,700 ANSI lumens. And with UST technology, LG HU85L can be set a mere 5.6 centimeters from the wall to project a 90-inch diagonal image or placed 18 centimeters away for a massive 120-inch picture.

The more compact HU70L projector provides an impressive home theater experience with a deep and rich picture up to 140 inches diagonal and brightness of an impressive 1500 ANSI lumens that covers 92 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. The projector employs four LEDs to generate red, green and blue, with the addition of the fourth LED boosting image brightness, contrast and generating more vivid colors with more nuanced tonality (compared to conventional LED projectors) by dynamically adjusting green levels.

With support for HDR10, LG’s new projectors will enthrall viewers with realistic images featuring deeper blacks and brighter colors. TruMotion technology makes pictures even more lifelike, ensuring all on-screen motion is rendered smoothly and naturally. What’s more, the inclusion of LG’s six-step 4K upscaler allows users to view Full HD content in ultra-sharp 4K. Both CineBeam projectors also deliver a plethora of streaming content options as well as various connectivity options including USB, HDMI, Ethernet and wireless mirroring (Android and iOS). Featuring LG’s acclaimed webOS 4.5, users can directly access popular streaming apps including Netflix, Amazon, YouTube and more using the company’s intuitive Magic Remote with backlit buttons for ease of use even in the darkest rooms.

“Our new 4K projectors versatile enough to perform equally well in the home or office,” said Jang Ik-hwan, head of LG’s IT business division. “Featuring new innovations that elevate picture quality and user convenience to a whole new level, LG is redefining the modern projector and continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

Both LG 4K UHD CineBeam Laser and LG 4K UHD CineBeam LED projectors will be unveiled at the Ellington Hotel in Berlin during IFA 2019. Those interested in experiencing these projectors for themselves are encouraged to contact ym.ko@lge.com for an appointment.

LG AND NAVER TEAM UP TO MAXIMIZE SMARTPHONE DUAL SCREEN WITH “OMNITASKING” BROWSER

Designed with Multiple Screens in Mind, NAVER’s Whale
Optimized to be Perfectly Compatible with Dual Screen

Logo of LG Dual Screen and Naver Whale

SEOUL, Aug. 27 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) and NAVER, South Korea’s largest search engine provider, developed Whale, a browser optimized for use on LG Dual Screen that takes multitasking to a whole new level.

Whale, based on Google’s open-source Chromium browser, supports what NAVER calls omnitasking, the ability to carry out several tasks simultaneously on one screen. Whale supports split screen mode with adjustable divider to enable browsing two sites in the same tab. Paired with LG Dual Screen, Whale takes on a whole new dimension with the ability to move between two browsing screens quickly and effortlessly. Those who enjoy online shopping will be able to select from a site’s main category menus on one screen while reading product descriptions on the other. Bilingual users can search and read their favorite news sites in two different languages simultaneously with Whale.

LG has been looking at new and creative ways consumers can maximize the usefulness of its Dual Screen technology first introduced with the LG V50ThinQ 5G. Plans for more devices that support LG Dual Screen are on the horizon, starting with IFA Berlin, where LG will unveil its newest phones that support the LG Dual Screen and come with NAVER Whale preinstalled.

“A new form factor for mobile, LG Dual Screen is highly regarded by consumers for its exceptional usability,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president of product strategy group at LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our partnership with NAVER is just the beginning of a more expansive Dual Screen ecosystem and another sign of our commitment to providing users with an enriched, differentiated mobile experience.”

“A seamless omnitasking experience is something consumers everywhere want and value, which is why we are eyeing the global market for NAVER Whale,” said Hyo Kim, head of the NAVER Whale team. “Strategic partners like LG will help us reach more global users with Whale, which will support more languages by the end of the year.”

Join LG at IFA 2019 in Berlin, Germany from September 6-11 where LG’s newest smartphones featuring optimized NAVER Whale will be unveiled. Follow LG’s IFA activities on social media using #LGIFA2019.

By LG Singapore Staff

Over the past several years the home beauty care market has grown exponentially across the entire Asia Pacific region with the biggest names in consumer electronics leveraging their technological expertise to create a new generation of home beauty solutions. Korean brands in particular continue to be a driving force of the at-home skin care trend, pairing innovative, effective products with endorsements from internationally recognized Korean influencers proving to be a recipe for success. Against this backdrop, LG recently introduced its premium home beauty brand, LG Pra.L, in Singapore to an eager audience.

LG’s Pra.L (pronounced PRA-EL) represents a new product category that demonstrates the company’s strong brand loyalty in the region. Consisting of four products – Dual Cleanser, Galvanic Ion Booster, Total Lift Up Care and Derma LED Mask – the lineup complements users’ existing skincare routines to improve skin tone and elasticity.

Singaporean journalists and social media influencers stand next to each other during their visit to LG’s headquarters in South Korea.

To communicate the value of Pra.L and what differentiates it from the competition, LG Singapore organized a press tour for Singaporean journalists and social media influencers to LG’s headquarters in South Korea prior to the products’ Singapore launch.

The opportunity to learn about LG Pra.L’s Total Lift Up Care for youthful skin and Derma LED Mask for more radiant skin directly from the people responsible for developing the products was especially helpful in better understanding the strategy behind LG Pra.L.

Kersie Koh, co-founder and creative director of fashion and beauty website Clozette, focused on the safety-conscious design of the Derma LED Mask with eye-shields “made of body-safe silicone to protect eyes from any glare from the LED lights” and “proximity sensors to ensure the mask only activates when worn correctly.”

Since hitting stores in Singapore, the Derma LED Mask has been a best-seller, with consumers’ interest piqued by the stories and images shared from the tour and subsequent launch event. LG MAKES CONNECTING TO SMART HOME APPLIANCES EVEN MORE CONVENIENT WITH NEW VOICE CAPABLE APP

Voice Recognition in New ThinQ App Gives Users the Power to
Control and Monitor LG Products Using Natural Language

SEOUL, Aug. 23, 2019 LG Electronics (LG) is bringing voice recognition to customers via its ThinQ™ (formerly SmartThinQ™) mobile app, giving users maximum convenience to connect to their LG ThinQ™ appliances from anywhere at any time. The first mobile application for smart home appliance management to support English leverages the Google Assistant’s voice recognition technology to manage all Wi-Fi enabled LG appliances including washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, air conditioners, air purifiers and more.

Users will enjoy the incredible ease of controlling and monitoring their appliances via conversational voice commands via the ThinQ app. For smart home convenience, the app provides real-time status updates for all connected LG devices with just one command. Users can verbally ask the ThinQ app to check the time remaining on the washer machine cycle from the office or adjust the temperature of the air conditioner while driving home without having to stop what they’re doing to look at their phones.

The ThinQ app provides helpful information on product features and functions and alerts the user with suggestions for maintenance and troubleshooting problems. Ask “How does the air purifier auto function work?” or “What does the yellow light on the refrigerator mean?” and receive a prompt reply right in the app. The ThinQ app can not only offer answers for most of the common questions related to product usage, it can also generate a summary of recent usage activity and deliver useful home living tips.*

“Creating a smart home experience that actually makes our customers’ lives measurably more convenient is what drives us daily,” said Alice Ryu, head of LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company’s smart home business. “With the voice capable mobile app, we have created a better smart home ecosystem that puts convenience first.”

The enhanced ThinQ app will be available starting in Korea this month followed by North America in the fourth quarter and key markets of Europe next year. Visitors to IFA 2019 are invited to experience LG’s complete lineup of smart home solutions from September 6-11 in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin and encouraged to follow LG’s IFA activities on social media using #LGIFA2019.
