SEOUL, Apr. 30, 2019 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced consolidated sales of KRW 14.92 trillion (USD 13.27 billion) and operating profit of KRW 900.6 billion (USD 801.25 million) for the first quarter of 2019. Although overall first-quarter revenues and operating income declined somewhat in 2019 versus 2018, the home appliance company reported record first-quarter sales and profits. Operating income was 1,090 percent higher than the fourth quarter of 2018, reflecting improved cost structures across major business units.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company generated first-quarter revenues of KRW 5.47 trillion (USD 4.86 billion) and operating profit of KRW 727.6 billion (USD 647.3 million), the highest quarterly revenue and operating income for the business unit in LG history. Sales were especially strong in Europe and Asia, contributing to growth of 11 percent year-on-year and 26 percent quarter-on-quarter on robust sales of premium and growth products especially in the domestic Korean market. The increase in operating profit of more than 30 percent from the same period last year also can be attributed to the growing popularity of high-growth products such as Styler, clothes dryers, air purifiers and vacuum cleaners as well as effective cost reduction efforts.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported first-quarter revenues of KRW 4.02 trillion (USD 3.58 billion) and operating profit of KRW 346.5 billion (USD 308.27 million), a decrease of 3 percent from the same period the previous year due to seasonal weakness in demand and the lack of global sporting events. Operating income increased significantly from the previous quarter thanks to greater marketing efficiencies and improvement cost structure. The launch of new 2019 premium products including OLED TVs, NanoCell TVs and large-screen Ultra HD TVs is expected to generate additional sales opportunities in the second quarter.

The LG Mobile Communications Company saw first-quarter sales of KRW 1.51 trillion (USD 1.34 billion) and narrowed its quarterly operating loss to KRW 203.5 billion (USD 181.05 million) as LG continues to rebuild its smartphone business. Operating results improved from the previous quarter as a result of stronger business structure. Looking ahead, the launch of LG V50ThinQ 5G smartphone is expected to create positive momentum in the second quarter while the relocation of LG’s smartphone manufacturing center from Pyeongtaek, Korea to Haiphong, Vietnam will help improve profitability and LG’s global competitiveness in the second half of the year.

The LG Vehicle Component Solutions Company recorded first-quarter revenues of KRW 1.35 trillion (USD 1.20 billion), a 61 percent increase from the same period last year. Increased sales at ZKW contributed to an improvement in operating results despite rising raw material prices and initial production costs associated with new projects. Trends in the global auto market associated with low fuel prices and increased sales of luxury vehicles and SUVs will create more opportunities for LG’s automotive components business.

The LG Business Solutions Company posted first-quarter sales of KRW 626.6 billion (USD 556.58 million), 5 percent higher than the previous quarter and 3 percent lower than the first quarter a year ago. Operating profit of KRW 55.5 billion (USD 49.38 million) was 272 percent higher than the previous quarter but 3 percent lower year-on-year due to the impact of U.S. tariffs on solar module imports and ongoing significant price erosion in major markets. The information display business plans to improve profitability by expanding sales of premium displays and LED products.

LG PARTNERS WITH SWISSCOM TO BRING 5G TO EUROPE

Swiss Customers to be First in the Region to Experience the
Power of Next Generation Connectivity with LG V50ThinQ 5G People are looking the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, which will be released in Swisscom retail stores

SEOUL, Apr. 11, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) and Swisscom announced the imminent arrival of commercial 5G services in Europe with a collaboration that would see the LG V50ThinQ 5G smartphone and accompanying LG Dual Screen in Swisscom retail stores in the weeks to come. The partnership with Swisscom is just the beginning for LG as it engages other European carriers with plans to launch 5G service in 2019.

The LG V50ThinQ 5G is powered by the new Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 855 Mobile Platform and Snapdragon X50 5G modem. And because 5G requires more energy than LTE, LG’s first 5G handset is equipped with a 4,000mAh battery which is 20 percent larger than the battery found in the LG V40ThinQ. And to handle the extra workload and keep the V50ThinQ 5G running cool, the heat-dissipating Vapor Chamber system in the new V series smartphone is nearly three times larger than the cooling system found in its predecessor.

With 5G’s promise to deliver more content in less time, Swisscom customers will be able to add LG’s Dual Screen to the V50 for even more 5G fun. Once attached, the Dual Screen opens up like a folder to reveal a 6.2-inch OLED display, expanding the possibilities of fast 5G technology such as live streaming music concerts and sporting events. Turned horizontally, the LG V50ThinQ 5G with Dual Screen turns into a fully functional gaming device, with the Dual Screen taking the place of a dedicated control pad. Multitasking takes on a whole new level of convenience with two displays: enjoy a movie on one screen while searching IMDB on the other without minimizing the active window. Most importantly, the Dual Screen can be quickly detached to save battery and weight when on the go.

“LG is very focused on expanding its leadership in 5G by introducing leading-edge devices and forging customer-oriented collaborations with carrier partners such as Swisscom,” said Morris Lee, senior vice president and business unit leader at LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Strong collaborations will be required to accelerate 5G commercialization in Europe and LG is eager to be a key player once 5G service becomes widely available in the region.”

“As the number one ICT provider in Switzerland, Swisscom is committed to offering customers the best experience and shaping the future,” said Dirk Wierzbitzki, head of products and marketing and member of the executive board of Swisscom. “LG is a key player to make 5G become a reality and thus inspire Swiss consumers with the next generation connectivity in a networked world.”

Under the banner, The Royal Palace, the cultural event is expected to deliver a next-level visual experience to visitors through the exquisite features of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W, popularly known as LG’s Wallpaper TV.

Korean embroidery artist Lee Jung-sook discuss the “chasu” with attendees at The Royal Palace event.

During UNESCO’s 10-day exhibition in Paris (April 8-18), LG will showcase around 100 traditional embroidery designs from acclaimed Korean artist Lee Jung-sook. Both LG and UNESCO hope to capture the legacy of Korea’s traditional embroidery and its ability to convey the essence of the nation’s unique history and culture for all to experience.

Three visitors look at the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W which displays a “chasu” artwork.

Since partnering with the Cultural Heritage Administration in 2016 to preserve and promote Korea’s cultural heritage all over the world, LG has undertaken various far-reaching initiatives to promote the nation’s distinctive cultural assets, many of which take their rightful place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The UNESCO exhibit raises awareness of disappearing traditions by communicating with a global audience the beauty of crafts and skills from an earlier time.

The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W and promotional banners form a display that introduces Korea’s traditional “chasu” embroidery.

Visitors to the exhibition can enjoy a spectrum of Lee’s embroidery work, ranging from her powerful emblem pieces to her colorful accessories, all presented on LG’s stunning OLED TV which reproduces colors and details like no other display.

The LG Wallpaper TV’s razor-thin profile and beautiful design is built on LG OLED’s revolutionary pixel dimming control technology that provides the perfect platform to highlight the meticulous details and craftmanship of Korean traditional embroidery. Almost one with the wall, the slimness and nearly invisible edges of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R add to the immersive experience when viewing beautiful, hyper-realistic images on a TV that would feel right at home in an art gallery.

LG’S ROLLABLE OLED TV HIGHLIGHTS BOLD INSTALLATION AT MILAN DESIGN WEEK

LG and Foster + Partners Highlight the Essence of Unique
OLED TV with “Redefining Space” Collaborative Artwork

LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R model 65R9 displayed in the dark for the Redefining Space installation, with a model standing in front at Milan Design Week.

Milan, Apr. 8, 2019 — In a unique partnership highlighting the intersection of technology and spatial design, LG Electronics (LG) and renowned architecture and industrial design firm Foster + Partners are collaborating on an art installation centered on the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R (model 65R9) at Milan Design Week.

Introduced at CES 2019, LG’s rollable OLED TV is a genuine showstopper that redefines the relationship between a TV and the space it inhabits, serving as a reminder of the company’s commitment to design innovation. The product design philosophy of the rollable OLED TV leverages a new level of space integration and “freedom from walls”, serving as the catalyst for the Milan Design Week installation. The renowned British firm Foster + Partners worked closely with LG during the development of the rollable OLED TV to design the product’s external geometry and finish as well as specific internal mechanics.

Demonstrating a high level of spatial integration with the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R as its centerpiece, the Redefining Space installation is a three-dimensional interpretation that demonstrates how light, technology and design intersect to illustrate new spatial possibilities with technology that changes forms at the touch of a button. Pairing the absolute contrast and natural color expression of LG’s unrivaled OLED display technology with the realistic sound of Dolby Atmos, the rollable OLED TV takes viewers on an immersive visual and auditory journey.

Designed to represent both a residence and a gallery, the exhibit illustrates how LG’s futuristic TV can transform a space from a large-screen home cinema when in Full View mode into an art showcase when the display is in Zero View, concealed in the brushed aluminum base. Light shimmering through the window-like cutouts in the walls of the installation mimics the way sunlight changes position and intensity throughout the day, evoking a sense of time passage. To express how LG’s technology adapts to the rhythms of life, the rollable display unfurls when the environment is bright and full of sound and disappears when the light and noises fade.

Visitors to this year’s Milan Design Week can experience Redefining Space featuring LG’s one-of-a-kind TV from April 9-14 at Superstudio Più in Milan, Italy.

LG BRINGS INTELLIGENT MANUFACTURING SOLUTIONS TO HANNOVER MESSE 2019

LG’s Innovative Solutions Open New Doors for the Manufacturing Industry

Models pose with the 6-axis robot utilizing Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV).

HANNOVER, Apr. 1, 2019 ― LG Electronics (LG), in conjunction with sister company LG CNS, is showcasing its leading manufacturing technologies through innovative solutions at Hannover Messe 2019 in Germany from April 1-5. With interests in numerous sectors ranging from industrial self-driving robots to an integrated platform for automated factories, LG is a major player at Hannover Messe, the world’s largest industrial technology exhibition with about 6,500 companies from 75 countries.

A highlight of the event from LG is Mobile Manipulator, an industrial self-driving robot developed to raise productivity and quality levels across countless intelligent automated factories. As a 6-axis robot utilizing Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV), Mobile Manipulator can carry out a wide range of useful actions such as transporting components, assembling products and conducting inspections while moving along a mapped-out area of the production line. Other industrial equipment compatible with the Mobile Manipulator – such as AI inspectors and vertically articulated robots – will also be on display in LG’s booth.

Visitors to LG’s exhibit at Hannover Messe 2019 will be introduced to MAVIN (Machine Learning-based Vision Inspection), LG’s AI solution for enhancing quality inspections. Utilizing the cutting-edge deep learning algorithms developed by LG’s Materials & Production Engineering Research Institute, MAVIN will have an accuracy rate of more than 99 percent when identifying faults on the product line for electronic components including displays, camera modules and electric vehicle batteries. This advanced solution is currently in operation at LG Electronics as well as other LG-affiliated companies.

LG is showcasing vertically and horizontally articulated robots developed by Robostar, a Korean industrial robotics company in which LG holds a 30 percent share. The horizontally-articulated SCARA (Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arm) is used to transport and assemble components on production lines. Robostar’s 6-axis robots – similar to human arms and can move across 6 axes to transport, assemble and weld – are currently in operation in LG’s vehicle components plant in Incheon.

LG CNS is also unveiling Factova, an integrated platform for intelligent automated factories. Factova effortlessly lays the foundation for factory automation by integrating AI technology with big data gathered from manufacturing processes. Factova’s Cyber Physical System (CPS) enables the real-time monitoring of robots and facilities in a 3-dimensional virtual space. Combined with simulation technology on the production line, the platform guarantees safe control by predicting potential defects or collisions between robots and equipment. The upcoming exhibition in Hannover will provide the opportunity to both monitor and control an actual factory in real-time using Factova’s integrated platform for equipment control.

LG Electronics will further present a range of sensor products to assist workers and create safer working environments. For example, tVOC (total Volatile Organic Compound) Gas Sensor helps prevent gas leaks by warning the central control system of harmful gas. LG’s 3D ToF (Time of Flight) Sensor attached to self-driving AGVs accurately identifies obstacles, thus strengthening the safety and efficiency of the movement of robots. What’s more, Self-Powered Electric IoT Sensor detects current leakage or electric discharge in real-time.

“Hannover Messe is the perfect stage to demonstrate LG’s leadership in the field of industrial technology, showcasing our groundbreaking intelligent manufacturing solutions,” said Kim Byung-yeol, vice president of LG’s manufacturing division. “LG is pushing the frontiers of intelligent manufacturing solutions by building on LG’s existing advanced capabilities.”

Under this year’s theme of Integrated Industry–Industrial Intelligence, international pioneers across multiple industries will come together to showcase the transformative industrial technologies utilizing AI and machine learning of today, and tomorrow.

LG EMERGES AS BIG WINNER AT 2019 RED DOT DESIGN AWARDS

Recognized Again for Excellence in Product Design with
29 Accolades Including Two “Best of the Best”

Logo of Reddot Awards 2019.

SEOUL, Mar. 27, 2019 ― LG Electronics (LG) was again recognized for its strength in consumer and industrial design, earning an impressive 29 product design accolades at this year’s running of the Red Dot Award. LG’s impressive collection includes two Best of the Best honors for its LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R and LG SIGNATURE bottom-freezer refrigerator. The Red Dot program is one of the longest-running, most respected industry competitions of its kind in the world with more than 5,500 submissions from 55 countries entering this year’s contest.

As the world’s first and only “rollable” TV, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R delivers the unmatched image quality of OLED in the smallest package possible, with the magical ability to disappear into a low-profile base when not in use. Named Best TV Product of CES 2019 and hailed by many industry experts as a new paradigm in television, the Best of the Best recognition from Red Dot is confirmation of LG’s innovation leadership.

LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R can instantaneously transform itself into three different modes for different content – Full View, Line View and Zero View. Each view allows customers to use the TV in ways that were impossible before the advent of OLED technology. The premium bloodline is clearly evident in the overall design, from the brushed aluminum casing to the quality wool speaker cover designed by Kvadrat of Denmark.

LG’s second Best of the Best honor was bestowed upon the LG SIGNATURE bottom-freezer refrigerator for making luxury synonymous with kitchen appliances. Central to the design is its 29-inch LCD screen which transforms into transparent glass with just two knocks to show what’s inside. Not only is this more convenient, this innovation saves energy by reducing the loss of cold air every time the door is opened to peer inside. With modularity in its DNA to better meet customer’s needs, the upper section of the refrigerator was designed to be replaced with the LG SIGNATURE wine cellar when available later this year.

These two flagship products were also honored earlier this month at the prestigious iF Design Award 2019 in Munich, Germany. The Red Dot judges praised LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R, calling it “a product offering new usage scenarios,” and heralding it as “the complete combination of technology and design.” They also noted that the functionality, design and ease-of-use of LG SIGNATURE bottom-freezer refrigerator design achieved “impressive harmony.”

In addition to the two Best of the Best wins, 27 other LG products including a number of OLED TVs (models Z9, E9, C9), LG Audio (model AJ7), Signature Kitchen Suite Oven Package, LG gram (model 17Z990) to name just a few, were recognized in the product design category for category-leading aesthetics, functionality and technological innovation.

“Being recognized by Red Dot is a tremendous honor and reaffirms our belief that great design can drive category leadership,” Noh Chang-ho, vice president and head of corporate design at LG Electronics. “We will continue to push the industry forward by delivering design innovation to our customers and showcasing what’s possible for the future.”

A male journalist records a news video about the new technologies he found from MWC 2019 in the LG Creator’s Studio.

To support tech influencers from around the world, LG set up a “personal” studio in the middle of its busy stand at MWC 2019 to provide content creators the peace and quiet to produce content on site minus the crowd and the noise. This unique space allowed for the sharing of real stories with consumers through the voices of their favorite creators. Vloggers, YouTubers and social media mavens were provided with LG’s newly unveiled flagship smartphones, LG G8ThinQ and LG V50ThinQ 5G, along with Dual Screen, LG’s take on the expansive display trend for the 5G era.

SEOUL, Mar. 16, 2019 — A jury panel of 67 design experts convening in Germany awarded LG with 16 recognitions, among them the iF Gold Award for the LG OLED TV E9. Winners were announced last night in Munich at the iF Design Award 2019 ceremony. This year, 66 products were recognized with iF Gold Awards among 6,375 entries received.

LG OLED TV (model E9) secured the highest iF Gold Award for outstanding design that made the screen more expansive. The use of transparent glass at the bottom with the stand recessed far behind the display creates a more immersive viewing experience that draws the eyes to display. According to the iF judges, LG designed a TV where the screen appeared to “float in air,” the ultimate objective of every TV designer.

A wide array of OLED products such as LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R, 8K OLED TV, OLED TV and Transparent OLED Signage were recipients of iF awards this year. Most notable among iF Design Award recipients is the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R, also known as the world’s only “rollable” TV for its ability to disappear into the low-profile base when not being viewed to maximize and simplify the living space.

Since 1953, designers and manufacturers have endeavored to win the renowned iF label for design. Conferred by the iF International Forum Design GmbH based in Hanover, the iF Design Award is recognized as one of the top three design awards in the world, alongside the Red Dot Design Award and IDEA (International Design Excellence Award). Winning an iF Design Award is confirmation of quality for outstanding design and exceptional customer service. For consumers and users, an iF Design Award is guarantee that the product displaying the mark is the best in its class.

“Great design is being able to anticipate the needs of our customers,” said Noh Chang-ho, vice president and head of corporate design at LG Electronics. “At LG, we will continue to introduce designs that exceed consumers’ expectations.”
