LG Electronics’ Promise of AI for an Even Better Life Delivered at CES 2019 Keynote

LG CTO Envisions Life Enhanced by Next Generation of
Consumer-Focused Artificial Intelligence Innovations
LG Electronics president and chief technology officer, Dr. I.P. Park, addresses the audience in his keynote at CES 2019.

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) president and CTO Dr. I.P. Park outlined the company’s vision for the future in his CES 2019 keynote, titled AI for an Even Better Life, on January 7 at the MGM Park Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. At CES, the world’s premier consumer electronics show, LG’s CTO outlined how the three key pillars of artificial intelligence – Evolve, Connect and Open – could deliver a robust AI ecosystem with diverse solutions for the real world.

A leading proponent of consumer-focused AI technology, LG has continued to take a leadership role in advocating the beneficial role of AI in consumers’ lives. The keynote featured LG’s AI technologies implemented in daily-life scenarios to give the audience of more than 3,000 industry figures, influencers and journalists a better understanding of how the company is working on transforming tomorrow. The LG CLOi GuideBot shared the spotlight with Dr. Park during the address, becoming the first ever robot to help deliver a CES keynote in the process.

“Is technology making your life better?” Dr. Park began his keynote by asking the audience. “Over the past 100 years, household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and vacuum cleaners have reduced time spent on housework by around 75 percent, but the amount of cognitive labor involved has significantly increased.” Dr. Park explained, “The answer lies in AI – but only if we can achieve true intelligence.”

Since its launch in 2017, the company’s AI brand LG ThinQ has seen its portfolio grow rapidly to include air conditioners, washing machines, TVs, smartphones and robot vacuum cleaners. Dr. Park presented LG’s latest innovations in these appliances which leveraged the power of AI: the world’s most advanced AI chip for home appliances, a washing machine with reinforced learning, and “self-healing” machines that can detect and fix malfunctions automatically without interrupting operation.

“But I want to talk about more than just improvements,” Dr. Park continued. “Our ambition is to go way beyond LG’s current role as a leading manufacturer of consumer electronics and to become a lifestyle innovator that serves a truly intelligent way of living.” Proclaiming LG’s vision for the age of artificial intelligence, Dr. Park explained how the three key ideas – Evolve, Connect and Open – will empower AI technology to transform every aspect of daily life. LG ThinQ products will evolve over time by learning about the user, connect seamlessly with customers’ lives and open up an ecosystem of innovation made stronger by partnerships and cooperation, ultimately offering “a new and daring definition of better life.”

Dr. Park highlighted the importance of evolving intelligence in consumer electronics. For AI devices to go beyond simple voice recognition and automated task execution, they must be able to understand the purpose and intention behind each command. Such contextual understanding requires AI to evolve through accumulating interaction with the user.

LG is also extending its unparalleled consumer insight from home to the road with its innovative offerings for a new in-car experience. In the advent of an autonomous driving revolution, LG has set out to change and expand the very definition of vehicles from a means of transport to mobile space. LG’s AI-enabled cabin solution will help users make the fullest use of their time saved from not driving, turning their vehicles into a conference room, movie theater or even personal shopping boutique.

“Building this new in-car experience requires a wide range of different solutions in both hardware and software… which is why we need OPEN collaboration.” said Dr. Park, illustrating LG’s continued efforts to facilitate a culture of open innovation. He introduced LG’s collaboration with the leading seat manufacturer Adient to develop smart seats for a more personalized in-car experience. Also announced was LG’s new plan for its operating platform webOS which has been open sourced since March 2018. “From this year, we’ll be adding to webOS open access to LG’s proprietary AI platform for developers all around the world.” said Dr. Park.

Dr. Park then presented LG’s ambition to unlock the potential of AI technology a much larger scale by connecting hitherto individual units into intelligent systems. LG’s Robot Service Delivery Platform (RSDP) will systematically coordinate what multiple robots see, hear and learn to transform how we manage our work and our environment. AI-based smart grid will allow us to radically improve the efficiency of our energy ecosystem, from production and storage to consumption. Intelligent signage will turn the physical elements of space such as walls, signboards and even floors, into an active, intelligent part of environment.

LG’s keynote featured global experts including founder of the XPRIZE Foundation Dr. Peter Diamandis, renowned AI researcher Dr. Andrew Ng, managing director of automotive at Luxoft Alwin Bakkenes, senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm Durga Malladi and director of the Contextual Robotics Institute at University of California San Diego Professor Henrik Christensen.

“LG is a global powerhouse at the forefront of the AI revolution, which will impact nearly every major industry from technology to healthcare, agriculture, transportation, engineering and beyond,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA. “We were thrilled to have LG talk about ‘AI for an Even Better Life’ as its first keynote in CES history.”

Visitors to the LG ThinQ Zone in booth #11100 of the Las Vegas Convention Center this week will be able to experience LG’s collaborative technology and evolving AI firsthand.

LG Ushers in the TV of Tomorrow with World’s First Rollable OLED TV

Jaw-Dropping Form Factor, ThinQ AI and Alpha 9 Gen 2 Processor
Defines A Whole New Way to Watch Television

A view of LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R model 65R9 in three different viewing options on display.

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) is defining the next generation of televisions at CES 2019 with the introduction of the world’s first rollable OLED TV. The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R (model 65R9) redefines the definition of TV with a variable form factor only made possible by the company’s industry-leading OLED technology. More than a demonstration of engineering prowess, LG’s breathtaking product boasts picture and sound quality that is second to none, all in a form factor that gives home TV viewers infinite possibilities in designing their perfect viewing space.

Since the start of the modern era, television screen sizes have steadily increased in size as resolution improved and consumers demanded a more immersive viewing experience. The trade-off came in the form of a large, black rectangle that dominated the room when the TV was not in use. Even more advanced projection TVs have never been able to deliver the contrast or the deep blacks that consumers demanded. In an effort to make large TVs less conspicuous, manufacturers have been racing to create even slimmer screens, focusing on designs that were as unobtrusive as possible.

With the introduction of last year’s LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W, LG stripped away the traditional concept of a TV, focusing on the simplicity of the screen. Dubbed the wallpaper TV, LG proved that a TV could deliver performance, subtlety and beauty all at the same time. LG’s latest effort takes this achievement to a whole new level. LG has created a TV with a display that seems to magically appear and disappear, a revolutionary innovation that seems to defy logic. The “R” in the new LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R is about creating a revolution in home entertainment and redefining space through its ability to rise and roll-up at the touch of a button.

A rollable OLED TV is a true game-changer, liberating users from the limitations of the wall and freeing them to curate their own personal space which no longer needs to be reserved full time for TV viewing. The fact that LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R can transform itself to offer three different viewing options – Full View, Line View and Zero View – allows customers to use the TV in ways that were impossible before the development of OLED technology.

Full View delivers a large-screen viewing experience revealing the full extent of the contrast, depth and realism that has become synonymous with all LG TVs. The remarkable AI picture and sound quality powered by LG’s second generation α (Alpha) 9 intelligent processor and deep learning algorithm puts this breathtaking TV in a class of its own. Users can use their normal voice to get things done with Amazon Alexa, a new addition to LG’s AI TV lineup in 2019, as is support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. With support for AirPlay 2, users can easily play videos from iTunes and other video apps, music, photos and directly from their Apple devices to their LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R. With Apple HomeKit support, customers will be able to control their LG TV using the Home app or by asking Siri.

Line View allows the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R to be partially unrolled, allowing for management of specific tasks that do not require the full TV screen. In Line View, users can choose from features such as Clock, Frame, Mood, Music and Home Dashboard. Invoke Clock mode to check the time and weather at a glance or Frame mode to enjoy family photos shared from a smartphone or Mood mode to create a more relaxing atmosphere.

When in Zero View, all 65 inches of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R is hidden from view, tucked away in the base. Even in Zero View, users can enjoy music and other audio content which emanate from the 4.2-channel, 100W front-firing Dolby Atmos audio system. The premium bloodline is clearly evident in the entire unit, from the brushed aluminum casing to the quality wool speaker cover designed by Kvadrat of Denmark.

Visitors to LG’s booth (LVCC Central Hall #11100) during CES 2019 from January 8-11 can experience the new LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R for themselves.

ThinQ AI and Alpha 9 Gen 2 Processor Deliver Whole New User Experience to LG TVs

Latest TVs From LG Offer Optimized Picture and Sound and
Sharp 8K Image Thanks to Deep Learning Technology

A granddad and grandson watch their LG OLED TV with LG ThinQ AI in their home

SEOUL, Jan. 3, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) is taking the home entertainment experience to new heights with the introduction of its latest flagship TVs with ThinQ AI at CES 2019. Powered by the company’s second-generation α (Alpha) 9 Gen 2 intelligent processor and deep learning algorithm, the new models offer a higher level of AI picture and sound experience quality. Thanks to the new algorithm, LG’s TVs will offer enhanced picture and sound by analyzing source content as well as optimized content by recognizing ambient conditions.

Employing LG’s open smart platform, LG’s 2019 TV range provides access to a wide selection of popular artificial intelligence services across multiple platforms, including newly implemented Amazon Alexa in addition to the built-in Google Assistant. Users will also enjoy the ease of conversational voice recognition and an intuitive Home Dashboard that makes it possible to control a wide variety of smart home devices directly from the TV.

The α9 Gen 2 employed in LG’s Z9, W9, E9 and C9 series OLED TVs heightens picture and sound quality with its deep learning algorithm (developed from a vast database of over one million visual data) which recognizes content source quality and determines the best upgrade method for optimal visual output. LG’s 8K 88-inch Z9 OLED TV boasts higher processing capabilities for delivering the most realistic 8K picture quality that looks sharp, vivid and detailed thanks to 8K upscaling and improved noise reduction.

In addition to content source detection, the new processor finely adjusts the tone mapping curve in accordance with ambient conditions to offer optimized screen brightness, leveraging its ability to understand how the human eye perceives images in different lighting. The processor uses the TV’s ambient light sensor to measure light levels, automatically adjusting brightness to compensate as needed. The α9 Gen 2 AI can further refine HDR content by adjusting the brightness to transform even the darkest scenes into ones with incredible contrast, detail and depth of color, even in brightly-lit rooms. And by leveraging Dolby’s latest imaging innovation which intelligently adjusts Dolby Vision content, LG TVs deliver a compelling HDR experience under varying ambient light.

Sound quality is augmented by an intelligent algorithm that can up-mix two-channel audio to deliver convincing virtual 5.1 surround sound. The α9 Gen 2 optimizes output based on content type, making voices clearer in movies, dramas and news broadcasts, among others. Users can adjust sound settings to suit room conditions or let their LG TV intelligently set the perfect levels based on its positioning. What’s more, LG’s flagship TVs again feature Dolby Atmos to create incredibly realistic sound for more immersive entertainment.

First available on 2018 TVs with ThinQ AI, the Google Assistant is again built-in this year’s lineup, delivering a streamlined experience that allows users to manage daily tasks, find answers and control compatible smart home devices. Users won’t need to grab a phone to order pizza as they can do it on the TV without leaving the program that’s playing on the screen.

This year, LG is expanding its AI partnerships to include Amazon Alexa in 2019 TVs with ThinQ AI to give customers more flexibility when it comes to voice services. By pressing the Amazon Prime Video button on the Magic Remote, users can manage smart home devices, ask questions and access tens of thousands of skills and even set up their ideal Alexa Routine complete with wake-up call, traffic information and favorite TV channel switching all with their voice. LG 2019 TVs with ThinQ AI also feature visually rich Alexa experiences when playing music, checking the weather or accessing one of a number of visually-enhanced skills – such as the Food Network – to find great recipes and meal inspiration. It’s just as easy to keep the family organized, check orders on Amazon or take that long overdue trip to Down Under by saying, “Kayak, book a room on the Gold Coast.”

And with the new conversational voice recognition feature that comes in LG’s 2019 TVs with ThinQ AI, it’s easier than ever to get the right answers. By understand context, the TVs allow for more complex requests meaning users won’t have to make a series of repetitive commands to get the desired results. The service will be available on LG TVs with ThinQ AI in over 140 countries.

The α9 Gen 2 also powers the company’s 2019 flagship 75-inch 8K LCD TV (model SM99). LG’s 2019 premium LCD TVs lineup (SM9X and SM8X series) will be rolled out with a new name: NanoCell TV, to better highlight the picture enhancement provided by NanoCell technology (NanoColor), color accuracy in wide viewing angle (NanoAccuracy) and ultra-narrow thin bezel with sleek design (NanoBezel). LG’s NanoCell TVs also offer AI-enhanced picture and sound, powered by a deep learning algorithm, as well as the streamlined experience offered by ThinQ.

And through the inclusion of HDMI 2.1 ports, all 2019 OLED TVs and selected NanoCell TVs with ThinQ AI will support high frame rate (HFR). NEW BIG CAPACITY LG TWINWASH AND DRYER SETS NEW STANDARD FOR LAUNDRY CONVENIENCE

Experience LG’s Next-Generation Pedestal Mini Washer and
Smarter Front-Loader and Dryer Laundry Solution at CES 2019

LG TWINWash™ washing machine and dryer in a laundry room

SEOUL, Dec. 28, 2018 — Winner of a 2019 CES Innovation Award, LG’s large-capacity TWINWash™ washer and dryer will make their debut in Las Vegas next month. The complete system of large capacity washer, convenient SideKick™ pedestal washer and DUAL Inverter Heat Pump™ dryer makes it possible to run two loads at once while gently drying a third at low temperature. LG’s revolutionary laundry solution also incorporates Wi-Fi and SmartThinQ®, enhancing user convenience by making laundry, and the home, more intelligent.

The new large-capacity washer and dryer feature a 27-inch LG TWINWash front-loader and a DUAL Inverter Heat Pump™ dryer capable of delivering more user benefits. While the main washer handles the larger loads, the SideKick unit underneath is ideal for smaller loads or more delicate clothing that requires a gentler touch. With an increased capacity and simultaneous washing capability, LG TWINWash is suitable for large families, able to accommodate a king-size comforter and full set of bedding easily at the same time.

The advanced washer is able to deliver cleaner laundry in less time thanks to LG’s cutting-edge technologies such as TurboWash™360° which combines five powerful jets with 6Motion™ to allow water to penetrate deep into fabrics. The new dryer’s Dual Inverter Heat Pump means even more energy savings and with a lower drying temperature, clothes last longer and shrink less. What’s more, Auto Cleaning Condenser keeps the condenser free of lint and debris to improve air circulation, saving homeowners a chore and ensuring superior drying results.

Equipped with Wi-Fi and SmartThinQ, the TWINWash washer and dryer are compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, enabling the user to turn the machines on or off, start or pause a load, monitor the cycle status and more using voice commands and a smartphone app. The dryer’s Smart Pairing function eliminates the need to manually choose a drying cycle as LG’s intelligent technology suggests the optimal setting.

“Introduced in 2015, our TWINWash demonstrates LG’s innovation to laundry care that is constantly evolving to provide even more convenience,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “By constantly enhancing our core technologies, we will continue to deliver intelligent products that make life easier.”

LG’s TWINWash with TurboWash360° and dryer with DUAL Inverter Heat Pump will be available in a new Black Steel finish for a more premium, luxurious addition to any home. See these and other advanced laundry products from LG at CES 2019 from January 8-11 in booth #11100 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

SEOUL, Dec. 27, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) is set to delight home theater enthusiasts around the globe yet again with the introduction of its latest soundbar lineup at CES 2019.

The company’s new soundbars deliver superior sound quality through a collaboration with Meridian Audio – pioneers of High-Resolution Audio – along with smart functionality and a sleek, modern design. Delivering strong, multi-dimensional sound that fills every corner of the room and equipped with the convenience of AI, LG’s 2019 lineup creates truly immersive user experiences and features two CES Innovation Award recipients (models SL9YG and SL10YG). LG’s premium SL9 rose above the competition in its category to take home the coveted Best of Innovation title.

Working closely with Meridian, LG continues to improve sound quality across its product portfolio, extending its evolving technology to three soundbar models (models SL10YG, SL9YG and SL8YG) this year. The collaboration goes far beyond basic fine-tuning or the adoption of feature-sets, with both companies joining forces to engineer sound delivery for a truly unrivalled listening experience. Drawing on 25 years of experience as the masters of Digital Signal Processing, Meridian’s Bass & Space technology improves the soundstage and envelops listeners in rich, uncompromising sound and strong bass. Together with its Image Elevation technology designed to lift the soundstage and envelops listeners in rich, uncompromising sound in a more lifelike way to boost listeners’ sense of immersion, Meridian creates a true cinematic experience, delivering powerful surround sound like no other.

Able to up-mix two-channel audio to multiple, distinct channels without generating any distortion while maintaining tonal balance, the Meridian Upmix technology increases sound immersion by improving the sound field while upgrading the clarity of vocals and lead instruments. With these exclusive and cutting-edge enhancements, the premium user experience is elevated by LG’s 2019 lineup.

LG’s high-end soundbars (models SL10, SL9 and SL8) support both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. With these two acclaimed technologies, users can enjoy breathtakingly realistic surround sound that seems to come from multiple directions and depths. With some of LG’s premium soundbars supporting high-resolution audio via an advanced processing algorithm that can upscale conventional file formats, the output comes even closer to studio quality. To bolster the already solid output and detailed soundscape of LG’s latest soundbars, users can add the Wireless Rear Speaker Kit* to achieve a more cinema-like experience.

In addition to superior sound, clarity and richness, LG’s new lineup of soundbars offer the convenience of AI smart connectivity and voice recognition with the built-in Google Assistant. Users can control their LG soundbar and get information with a simple command such as, “Hey Google, increase the volume,” or “Hey Google, what artist is playing?” Compatibility with the Google Assistant-enabled smart products make it possible to control connected devices throughout the home via voice command. Simply say, “Hey Google, ask LG to turn on the air purifier,” to the soundbar to make adjustments without leaving the couch.

The 2019 LG soundbars have a sleek, understated design that perfectly matches the chic style of LG’s exceptional OLED TVs, creating a seamless aesthetic when placed beneath one of the company’s next-generation TVs. At only 57mm deep, the LG SL9 can also be installed flush to the wall for a clean, streamlined appearance that saves space and makes a sophisticated statement. An integrated gyroscope sensor gauges the position of the product (fixed to a wall or on a flat surface), adjusting sound directionality to guarantee the optimal listening experience. With its distinctive form, LG’s game-changing SL9 picked up a Best of Innovation honor at the 2019 CES Innovation Awards.

“LG’s 2019 soundbars deliver amazing performance tuned in close partnership with Meridian Audio with the convenience of smart AI connectivity,” said Kim Dae-chul, head of LG Home Entertainment Company’s audio and video business. “The high-quality sound and versatility of our newest lineup takes home entertainment to a whole new level and satisfies a growing demand for premium soundbar solutions that provide impressive listening experiences, greater convenience and stylish, modern aesthetics.”

Visitors to LG’s booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center (Central Hall #11100) during CES 2019 will experience firsthand the award-winning the 2019 LG soundbar models.
