LG BRINGS INTELLIGENT MANUFACTURING SOLUTIONS TO HANNOVER MESSE 2019

LG’s Innovative Solutions Open New Doors for the Manufacturing Industry

Models pose with the 6-axis robot utilizing Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV).

HANNOVER, Apr. 1, 2019 ― LG Electronics (LG), in conjunction with sister company LG CNS, is showcasing its leading manufacturing technologies through innovative solutions at Hannover Messe 2019 in Germany from April 1-5. With interests in numerous sectors ranging from industrial self-driving robots to an integrated platform for automated factories, LG is a major player at Hannover Messe, the world’s largest industrial technology exhibition with about 6,500 companies from 75 countries.

A highlight of the event from LG is Mobile Manipulator, an industrial self-driving robot developed to raise productivity and quality levels across countless intelligent automated factories. As a 6-axis robot utilizing Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV), Mobile Manipulator can carry out a wide range of useful actions such as transporting components, assembling products and conducting inspections while moving along a mapped-out area of the production line. Other industrial equipment compatible with the Mobile Manipulator – such as AI inspectors and vertically articulated robots – will also be on display in LG’s booth.

Visitors to LG’s exhibit at Hannover Messe 2019 will be introduced to MAVIN (Machine Learning-based Vision Inspection), LG’s AI solution for enhancing quality inspections. Utilizing the cutting-edge deep learning algorithms developed by LG’s Materials & Production Engineering Research Institute, MAVIN will have an accuracy rate of more than 99 percent when identifying faults on the product line for electronic components including displays, camera modules and electric vehicle batteries. This advanced solution is currently in operation at LG Electronics as well as other LG-affiliated companies.

LG is showcasing vertically and horizontally articulated robots developed by Robostar, a Korean industrial robotics company in which LG holds a 30 percent share. The horizontally-articulated SCARA (Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arm) is used to transport and assemble components on production lines. Robostar’s 6-axis robots – similar to human arms and can move across 6 axes to transport, assemble and weld – are currently in operation in LG’s vehicle components plant in Incheon.

LG CNS is also unveiling Factova, an integrated platform for intelligent automated factories. Factova effortlessly lays the foundation for factory automation by integrating AI technology with big data gathered from manufacturing processes. Factova’s Cyber Physical System (CPS) enables the real-time monitoring of robots and facilities in a 3-dimensional virtual space. Combined with simulation technology on the production line, the platform guarantees safe control by predicting potential defects or collisions between robots and equipment. The upcoming exhibition in Hannover will provide the opportunity to both monitor and control an actual factory in real-time using Factova’s integrated platform for equipment control.

LG Electronics will further present a range of sensor products to assist workers and create safer working environments. For example, tVOC (total Volatile Organic Compound) Gas Sensor helps prevent gas leaks by warning the central control system of harmful gas. LG’s 3D ToF (Time of Flight) Sensor attached to self-driving AGVs accurately identifies obstacles, thus strengthening the safety and efficiency of the movement of robots. What’s more, Self-Powered Electric IoT Sensor detects current leakage or electric discharge in real-time.

“Hannover Messe is the perfect stage to demonstrate LG’s leadership in the field of industrial technology, showcasing our groundbreaking intelligent manufacturing solutions,” said Kim Byung-yeol, vice president of LG’s manufacturing division. “LG is pushing the frontiers of intelligent manufacturing solutions by building on LG’s existing advanced capabilities.”

Under this year’s theme of Integrated Industry–Industrial Intelligence, international pioneers across multiple industries will come together to showcase the transformative industrial technologies utilizing AI and machine learning of today, and tomorrow.

LG EMERGES AS BIG WINNER AT 2019 RED DOT DESIGN AWARDS

Recognized Again for Excellence in Product Design with
29 Accolades Including Two “Best of the Best”

Logo of Reddot Awards 2019.

SEOUL, Mar. 27, 2019 ― LG Electronics (LG) was again recognized for its strength in consumer and industrial design, earning an impressive 29 product design accolades at this year’s running of the Red Dot Award. LG’s impressive collection includes two Best of the Best honors for its LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R and LG SIGNATURE bottom-freezer refrigerator. The Red Dot program is one of the longest-running, most respected industry competitions of its kind in the world with more than 5,500 submissions from 55 countries entering this year’s contest.

As the world’s first and only “rollable” TV, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R delivers the unmatched image quality of OLED in the smallest package possible, with the magical ability to disappear into a low-profile base when not in use. Named Best TV Product of CES 2019 and hailed by many industry experts as a new paradigm in television, the Best of the Best recognition from Red Dot is confirmation of LG’s innovation leadership.

LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R can instantaneously transform itself into three different modes for different content – Full View, Line View and Zero View. Each view allows customers to use the TV in ways that were impossible before the advent of OLED technology. The premium bloodline is clearly evident in the overall design, from the brushed aluminum casing to the quality wool speaker cover designed by Kvadrat of Denmark.

LG’s second Best of the Best honor was bestowed upon the LG SIGNATURE bottom-freezer refrigerator for making luxury synonymous with kitchen appliances. Central to the design is its 29-inch LCD screen which transforms into transparent glass with just two knocks to show what’s inside. Not only is this more convenient, this innovation saves energy by reducing the loss of cold air every time the door is opened to peer inside. With modularity in its DNA to better meet customer’s needs, the upper section of the refrigerator was designed to be replaced with the LG SIGNATURE wine cellar when available later this year.

These two flagship products were also honored earlier this month at the prestigious iF Design Award 2019 in Munich, Germany. The Red Dot judges praised LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R, calling it “a product offering new usage scenarios,” and heralding it as “the complete combination of technology and design.” They also noted that the functionality, design and ease-of-use of LG SIGNATURE bottom-freezer refrigerator design achieved “impressive harmony.”

In addition to the two Best of the Best wins, 27 other LG products including a number of OLED TVs (models Z9, E9, C9), LG Audio (model AJ7), Signature Kitchen Suite Oven Package, LG gram (model 17Z990) to name just a few, were recognized in the product design category for category-leading aesthetics, functionality and technological innovation.

“Being recognized by Red Dot is a tremendous honor and reaffirms our belief that great design can drive category leadership,” Noh Chang-ho, vice president and head of corporate design at LG Electronics. “We will continue to push the industry forward by delivering design innovation to our customers and showcasing what’s possible for the future.”

While the AI can adjust audio settings to ideal levels based on the environment, users can also make manual adjustments if they wish. LG’s flagship TVs again feature Dolby Vision for an outstanding HDR experience and Dolby Atmos for realistic, immersive audio.

Looking beyond still images, LG implemented Video Depth Control in both the front and rear cameras to ensure that moving subjects remain in focus. By analyzing distance and depth with Dual FOV technology, users can capture exactly what they see making it possible to produce videos that look incredibly polished and professional.

LG’s first 5G device is powered by the newest Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 855 Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem and LG’s optimized software to deliver the advanced processing power required for 5G. The phone is also equipped with a 4,000mAh battery, 20 percent larger than in the V40ThinQ, and a new Vapor Chamber heat-dissipation system which is more effective than conventional heat pipes to keep internal temperatures low and support sustained apps processing performance even when multitasking.

Inheriting the V series’ thin, stylish design, the LG V50ThinQ 5G is only 8.3 millimeters in thickness and weighs only 183 grams. To maintain its sleek profile with uninterrupted lines, the rear lens housing on the new V smartphone are completely flush with the back of the phone. All this is achieved without sacrificing the durability of the LG V50ThinQ 5G, which continues to comply with 14 U.S. military MIL-STD 810G standards.

In preparation of the rollout of its first 5G phone, LG is partnering with 10 major carriers in markets where 5G service will be launched this year, including the United States, South Korea, Australia as well as a number of European countries.

Dual Screens for Richer 5G Experience

To take user immersion and convenience to new heights with its first 5G smartphone, LG developed Dual Screen as an optional accessory for the LG V50ThinQ 5G. Designed to resemble a cover case, Dual Screen opens up to give LG V50ThinQ 5G owners a second 6.2-inch OLED display for double the viewing, gaming and multitasking experience. The Dual Screen display and the LG V50ThinQ 5G can be used independently, allowing for many interesting usage scenarios. For example, users can watch a movie on one screen while simultaneously searching IMDB on the other.

With Dual Screen attached, an icon appears on the display of the LG V50ThinQ 5G which can be tapped to power on the second display or switch effortlessly between the two screens. A multi-window feature divides each screen in two, making it possible to display and use multiple applications at the same time. In select games, the Dual Screen can be used as a dedicated controller, resolving the age old problem of thumbs getting in the way of the action. The Dual Screen can be positioned in two convenient angles – 104 and 180 degrees – and because it runs off the phone’s battery, there’s no need to charge it separately.

A Fresh Mobile Experience

LG G8ThinQ carries on the tradition of offering consumers worldwide a palette of convenience-enhancing features with a focus on delivering advanced optics and audio capabilities. What’s more, the subtle, understated design philosophy that discards all nonessential design elements gives the LG G8ThinQ an undeniably stylish appearance. Flawless aesthetics are not limited to the front of the device as its zero-protrusion rear camera creates a satisfyingly smooth surface. Crystal Sound OLED, an audio advancement that uses the smartphone’s display as a speaker diaphragm, eliminates the need for a front speaker, adding to the minimalist aesthetic.

LG G8ThinQ is the world’s first smartphone with advanced palm vein authentication, made possible by the combination of the ToF Z Camera and infrared sensors. More secure than fingerprint recognition technology, LG’s Hand ID identifies owners by recognizing the shape, thickness and other individual characteristics of the veins in the palms of their hands. Simply placing a pre-registered hand in front of the front-facing camera for a split second is all it takes to unlock the LG G8ThinQ and all its content.

The advanced Z Camera comes into play again when capturing eye-catching selfies in portrait mode. Z Camera measures infrared rays reflected off subjects to calculate depth faster and more accurately than other image sensors, making exciting features such as Face Unlock possible. Because Z Camera sees objects in 3D, Face Unlock is impossible to fool with two dimensional images of a face as photographs have no depth. What’s more, ToF technology in LG’s Z Camera isn’t affected by ambient light so accuracy is unaffected by light from external sources. With multiple forms of biometric authentication, LG is delivering more options for smartphone security than any other smartphone manufacturer, allowing consumers to choose which option is more convenient for them given the circumstance.

The Z Camera is also implemented to advance the user experience with Air Motion. Without touching the phone – useful especially when driving – users can answer or end calls, take screenshots, switch between applications or adjust the volume. Controlling the LG G8ThinQ is as simple as waving a hand or pinching the air, increasing convenience for active consumers when wearing gloves or swimming.

Unlike existing cameras capable of distinguishing only the subject and the background, the front-facing camera in the LG G8ThinQ measures the distance between the subject and the camera in millimeters to control the intensity of the background blur up to 256 levels for selfies with more depth. With an image sensor of 1.22μm (approximately 10 percent larger than in the LG V40ThinQ), the LG G8ThinQ can produce a much cleaner image that is also even faster with Auto Focus.

Video Portrait makes its debut on the LG G8ThinQ, giving users control of bokeh while filming video in Portrait Mode with the rear camera. By analyzing distance and depth with Dual FOV technology, users can capture exactly what they see making it possible to produce videos that look incredibly polished and professional.

Beyond optics, LG G8ThinQ excels when it comes to multimedia performance as the first G series device from LG to feature OLED display technology. The large QHD+ FullVision Display measures 6.1-inches with 564 pixels per inch, allowing for an incredible amount of detail.

High-end sound comes standard with LG smartphones and the LG G8ThinQ is no exception, with the bass-loving Boombox Speaker now capable of stereo output. Realistic surround sound is made possible with DTS:X, while a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC delivers unmatched sound details. LG G8ThinQ also supports Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) technology, allowing for compressed high-resolution audio streaming without compromising sound quality. Tuned in collaboration with Meridian Audio, LG G8ThinQ is a worthy addition to LG’s legacy of audio excellence.

G Series Option for Everyone Else

Another member of LG’s G family will be available in the months following MWC for markets seeking something unique in a package that offers a premium fit and finish without sacrificing performance or the premium essentials that make the LG G8ThinQ so special. The LG G8SThinQ features Qualcomm’s fast Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform mated to a vibrant 6.2-inch OLED display powered by a robust 3,350mAh battery. Three rear-facing cameras, dedicated night shot mode and low-light HDR technology makes this device a content creation powerhouse while Z Camera allows for enhanced security with Hand ID and Face Unlock. Air Motion, precise depth-of-field and stereo speakers round out the package that is bound to appeal to customers looking for a G8 experience at a competitive price.

MWC 2019 attendees are encouraged to visit LG’s booth in Hall 3 of Fira Gran Via from February 25-28 for more information on LG’s newest smartphones as well as other exciting mobile innovations.

SEOUL, Feb. 21, 2019 LG Electronics (LG) will aggressively expand its voice recognition-enabled smart home appliances this year, with more than two dozen markets expected to be on board by the start of the second quarter. With the company’s valued artificial intelligence (AI) partners Google and Amazon expanding sales of AI speakers globally, LG anticipates a simultaneous increase in demand for appliances supporting voice recognition. Millions more LG home appliance owners across the world will enjoy a smooth, connected smart life that includes some of the world’s popular home products.

Consistent with its open strategy for enhancing global users’ daily lives through open partnerships, open connectivity and open platforms, LG will continue to work closely with valued AI partners Google and Amazon to deliver more integration to LG customers. Through Google Home and Amazon Alexa, LG will expand voice recognition support of its home appliance products to 21 countries by April, beyond the current six markets.*

LG offers an extensive lineup of smart home appliances, including premium washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, air purifiers and Styler. Using conversational voice commands, users can effortlessly control their LG appliances and monitor their operation for smart home convenience. DESIGNED WITH SOLID FUNDAMENTALS, NEW LG Q AND K SERIES ARE DESIGNED TO IMPRESS

Advanced User Experience and Exceptional Price
Make These New Smartphones Easy to Love The front and rear view of the LG Q60 in New Moroccan Blue, the LG K50 in New Platinum Gray and LG K40 in New Moroccan Blue

SEOUL, Feb. 20, 2019 — At MWC 2019, LG Electronics (LG) will reveal three new consumer-friendly smartphones designed for those seeking advanced mobile devices without compromising usability. The LG Q60, LG K50 and LG K40 boast premium features, advanced technologies and stylish design, all without breaking the bank.

Redefining Usability

With these new mid-range beauties, LG is offering large, high-quality displays and AI-powered functionality to consumers who traditionally had to settle for less. Each device features LG’s HD+ FullVision displays – 6.26-inch for the LG Q60 and LG K50 and 5.7-inch in the LG K40. The front-facing camera in the LG Q60 and LG K50 is located in a water drop cutout to make maximum use of the FullVision display for comfortable viewing, playing and communicating while slim bezels make all three phones comfortable to hold and use one-handed.

To ensure superior user experience, the LG Q60, LG K50 and LG K40 all feature AI functions typically found in flagship smartphones. AI CAM magically recognizes objects it sees and recommends the ideal shooting mode for the best results. And a dedicated Google Assistant button gives users immediate access to the most widely-used virtual assistant on smartphones today.

Advanced Audio with DTS:X

With DTS:X 3D Surround Sound delivered through quality earphones, all three devices are sure to please even diehard audio aficionados. This high-end audio technology convincingly simulates a 7.1-channel surround sound system to make any content more immersive when playing games, streaming movies or enjoying today’s top hits.

Solid Fundamentals and More

To maximize everyday usability of the Q and K series, LG engineers focused on maximizing the two basics features that today’s smartphone customers covet the most: battery life and camera performance.

In addition to its impressive 13MP front camera, the LG Q60 sports three rear cameras: 16MP with Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF), 5MP with Super Wide Angle and a 2MP shooter with Depth Sensor that captures a sharp image of the subject while leaving the background blurred. With four unique lenses at their disposal, Q60 owners can take perfect shots every time, no matter how challenging the subject or the environment.

Both the LG Q60 and LG K50 are powered by a 3,500mAh battery for longer sessions of news reading, gaming or content streaming. At 3,000mAh, the battery in the smaller LG K40 is more than robust enough to provide a full day of use between charges.

LG CONTINUES TO PUSH BOUNDARIES OF EXCEPTIONAL SMARTPHONE AUDIO WITH NEW G SERIES

With Crystal Sound OLED and Meridian Audio Technology,
LG G8 ThinQ Delivers Premium Sound in Any EnvironmentA graphic showing off the new Crystal Sound OLED, which will be included in the LG G8 ThinQ

SEOUL, Feb. 14, 2019 — At MWC 2019, LG Electronics (LG) will remind audiences of its reputation and history as a leader in smartphone sound with the new LG G8 ThinQ  featuring Crystal Sound OLED (CSO), an innovative technology that utilizes the phone’s OLED display as an audio amplifier.

With more and more consumers using smartphones as their primary devices for watching movies, playing games and consuming music, the demand for mobile phones capable of delivering high-quality audio is higher than ever. LG has always recognized the importance of high quality smartphone audio in creating the ultimate user experience and this belief continues with the LG G8 ThinQ.

Developed in-house by LG, CSO repurposes the OLED display as a diaphragm, vibrating the entire surface to produce sound with impressive volume. And because LG’s unique technology takes advantage of the entire display, CSO also improves clarity, making voices easier to discern and subtle musical notes more noticeable.

In speakerphone mode, audio is delivered with impressive bass through the bottom speaker. Full-bodied stereo performance is possible with a 2-channel audio setup utilizing this bottom speaker and the top part of the display. As well as improving the sound, CSO also gives the LG G8 ThinQ a clean, minimalist look.

By working closely with audio partner Meridian, LG again brings exceptional sound fidelity to the mobile experience, delivering fine-tuned audio quality that consumers have come to expect from the company’s premium handsets. What’s more, LG’s newest G series phone features:

  • DTS:X 3D Surround Sound that emulates a 7.1-channel system with or without earphones, a first for LG
  • Hi-Fi Quad DAC that elevates the listening experience by reproducing sound with exceptional fidelity and the added ability to up-sample most audio files for increased clarity and depth
  • Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) that supports high-quality audio streaming even without an unlimited data plan
  • Boombox Speaker that takes advantage of the internal space of the phone as a resonance chamber to generate amazing bass and more volume

“Our commitment to driving smartphone audio to new heights is on clear display in LG G8 ThinQ,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president and head of product strategy at LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “By developing new technologies as well as working closely in partnership with the audio industry’s best partners, LG will continue to deliver the quality of sound that consumers demand and deserve.”

Visitors to MWC in Barcelona are encouraged to visit the LG booth from February 25-28 to experience Crystal Sound OLED and the LG G8 ThinQ along with many other mobile innovations.
