SMARTER LIFE WITH LG

Smart technology has long been a staple of future technology forecasting. Though the public’s enthusiasm for smart technology never quite matched that of industry insiders, smart technology has finally truly arrived.

However, the increased market penetration of smart appliances has not been achieved based on the appeal of smart technology alone. Rather it is the continued inclusion of smart capabilities on top-of-the-line – and now mid-tier – products that has resulted in growing adoption.

With the industry’s most extensive range of smart appliances available today, LG Electronics is offering consumers more ways to control their home and enjoy the benefits of a connected home experience, ushering in cutting-edge connectivity and convenience and expanding the Google Assistant compatibility and functionality for LG smart appliances.

LG SETS OUT TO SHOW THAT DISABILITY DIVERSITY IN TECH IS GOOD FOR EVERYONE

Two presenters announce the start of the 8th Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities on stage, which was sponsored by LG

In recent years, the media has shone a spotlight on the importance of cultivating diversity in the tech sector but there is one aspect of diversity that remains largely untouched: ability. One of the criticisms of the technology industry is that by focusing primarily on products it has forgotten about people. Corporations need to show greater commitment to disability inclusion in product development as well as global development.

Part two will focus on design and the audio capabilities of the V40ThinQ will wrap up the series. Read on to find out how LG’s latest mobile masterpiece can help to bring a little magic back into everyday life.

1. Introducing Penta Shot and Triple Shot: Five Cameras = Five Times the Fun

An image of the LG V40 ThinQ smartphone

The LG V40ThinQ breaks new ground with five cameras, meaning users can take the perfect picture regardless of the distance of the subject from the V40ThinQ. The rear camera module houses a staggering three different lenses (super wide-angle, standard angle and telephoto), and two more (wide-angle and standard) can be found on the front of the handset. The rear-facing 107-degree super wide-angle lens enables users to capture stunning panoramic scenes, whilst the telephoto lens takes crystal-clear shots from a distance without any loss of detail.

With all this choice, users might worry about selecting the wrong lens to shoot with. Well, they can relax because LG has included a clever feature called Triple Shot, which takes pictures with all three rear-mounted lenses at the same time. Triple Shot stitches together the images captured by each lens to create a short video file that can be easily shared.

Try out Triple Shot from the camera application. Just click on Triple Shot mode, tap on the shutter button, then hit Save.

 2. Forget About Framing: LG’s AI CAM Automatically Adjusts Composition for Portraits That Pop

A comparison between the original portrait photo and AI-adjusted portrait photo

LG V40ThinQ gives users’ portrait taking skills a helping hand via the new AI Composition feature, which automatically activates when the phone’s AI CAM recognizes a human subject. It works just as well when taking group photos, optimizing shots according to how many people are in the composition and how they are posed. Both original and AI Composition images are saved to gallery, giving users the freedom to choose whichever version they prefer.

AI Composition can be accessed from the camera application. Click AI Camera and tap on the shutter button. Move to the gallery and click AI Composition to view the superb results.

 3. Cine Shot: Bringing Still Images to Life

LG V40ThinQ has a wealth of features that allow users to get the most out of its five cameras, and have a lot of fun doing it. With Cine Shot, it’s easy to make six-second GIFs where one element (of the user’s choosing) remains in perpetual motion while the rest of the picture stays static – like a still life painting with a distinctly fun, modern twist.

To produce a Cine Shot masterpiece, click the Cine Shot mode from the camera application, then tap the shutter button. Select the area of the frame to keep in-motion then hit Save.

 4. Backdrop: Change Background to Create Different Moods

Backdrop cleverly allows users to alter the background when taking portraits using any of the front or rear cameras. Play with focus, brightness, exposure, blurring effects, or bring in a solid color to give portraits that studio look. There are 5 studio-like lighting effects – including Natural, Softbox, Contour, Stage and Stage Black & White – to brighten, contour or add drama to portraits. Users can also choose from a variety of colored backgrounds to make pictures pop.

From the camera application, simply select Backdrop then adjust the background using the Settings bar. Tap on the shutter button and Save.

 5. Makeup Pro: No Makeup Remover Required

Experiment with this creative feature by clicking the Makeup Pro icon and cycling through the available makeup effects.

 6. My Avatar: Cute Emojis That Mimic Users’ Facial Expressions

The My Avatar feature in the LG V40 ThinQ analyzes the user’s appearance, taking one’s unique facial features into account to create a personalized 3D avatar. Adding to the fun, AR Emoji can track and copy the user’s expressions, making it possible to animate their avatar in real-time. Users may also choose from various 2D and 3D AR Stickers, and create 15 different GIFs when using the front-facing standard camera.

This concludes the first of a three part series on the LG V40ThinQ, the phone that boasts five incredible cameras along with some truly innovative features and functions. Stay tuned for the next installment in this series where the focus will turn to the modern, minimalist style of LG’s latest mobile sensation.

WHY LG IS BETTING ON ROBOTS

LG Electronics Vice President Jo Seong-jin and other officers discuss a sample of the CLOi robot at IFA 2018.

One thing the consumer electronics sector cannot be accused of is being complacent. Every year, there are new products, different trends and exciting innovations. Some consumer electronic brands struggle to keep up. LG Electronics not only relishes the challenge, it sees such developments as an opportunity to take the industry into a whole new direction.

LG has been exploring the possibility of robots and smart devices for some time now. At CES 2017, the company presented a tantalizing snapshot of its vision for the future, demonstrating how service robots might assist people in the home, at work and in public spaces.

LG Electronics Vice President Jo Seong-jin introduces LG’s new robotics business at IFA 2018.

The robotics sector relies heavily on convergence, calling on a wide range of core technologies and materials and synthesizing them to create solutions that offer an ever-broadening range of functionality. Machines that can talk to other machines, perform multiple tasks, and interact with the people that rely on them is the name of the game.

LG’s commercial robots – the Cleaning Robot, Airport Guide Robot and Porter Robot

In many ways, intelligent robots could be viewed as home appliances of tomorrow. Both robots and today’s appliances perform work, can communicate with the user and are capable of adapting to changes in the surrounding environment. For example, air conditioners no longer just deliver cool air during hot summer months. Today they can also heat, dehumidify and purify the air, intelligently sensing when and what option to apply. So it’s no surprise that LG, one of the world’s largest home appliance brands, is taking a leadership position in robotics.

Thanks to foresight and hard work on home appliances, LG finds itself in an advantageous position in robotics, possessing a variety of convergence technologies. LG was even a first mover in developing robots for everyday domestic applications, introducing the HOM-BOT robotic vacuum ten years ago.

Four members of a family enjoy their time together using LG’s CLOi Hub Robot in the living room.

Additionally, LG has the research and development capabilities to make itself a major player when it comes to bringing the next generation of robots to market. In fact, that work is already well under way. LG is actively collaborating with a number of established industry names to bring robots that learn and evolve to the core of our everyday experience.

A sample image of the robot

Earlier this year, LG inked an agreement with service robot developer Robotis to collaborate in the development of self-driving modules for mobile robots. Under the agreement, LG and Robotis will each focus on producing software and hardware to enable systems with intelligent navigation capabilities. LG will continue to invest, create and collaborate to advance the field of robotics in new and exciting directions.

Exciting things are happening at LG. Stay tuned.

THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS IN TODAY’S RENEWAL ENERGY HOME

Ever since the discovery of electricity, people have been searching for effective ways to store energy for use on demand. The electricity grid is a complex system in which power supply and demand must be balanced to keep up with the immediate needs imposed by the use of air conditioners, washing machines and of course, lighting. Seasons play a big role in this equation, as does weather. This balancing act to create a flexible and reliable grid system is especially important for homeowners who are investing in renewal energy technologies for their homes.

Because some renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind deliver their power inconsistently and unpredictably, energy storage systems (ESS) can play an important role in “smoothing out” the electricity supply from these sources and in order to deliver power when it is needed. ESS is a key part of a more efficient, flexible and reliable electricity system.

A series of solar panels and wind turbines in the outdoor renewable power plant

LG Electronics’ entry into the fast-growing U.S. residential ESS market means that even more residents will be able to benefit from the company’s industry-leading technologies. The introduction of two solutions from LG Energy Storage Systems – an AC-coupled 5.0 kW system for those who already have solar panels of any type already installed and a DC-coupled 7.6 kW system as part of a new installation of LG solar panels – and an expandable battery pack for homeowners gives homeowners more innovative options for their energy needs.

An image introducing the residential applications of LG’s renewable energy storage system that delivers eco-friendly power to air conditioning, heating, laundry and the TV

LG ESS works by using “smart energy management” to store excess energy produced from residents’ solar panels for use during hours when no solar energy is being produced, making it available at night or on overcast days. This also allows for less reliance on the public utility grid during times of peak energy consumption when electricity rates are the highest. LG ESS achieves higher efficiency because its DC-coupled ESS converts power more efficiently than AC type ESS units.

An image to show how the Smart Energy Management helps LG ESS to store excess energy produced from residential solar panels

Different families have different electricity usage patterns but normally, peaks occur in the morning and the evening when breakfast is being prepared and clothes are being laundered. LG ESS is advanced enough to account for times of high demand and adjust accordingly. In a power outage, each LG ESS can store up to four hours of energy and can be scaled up for more storage by pairing with an expandable battery pack.

The picture shows that LG’s Smart Energy Management analyzes the power use of individual residents in order to ensure the stable and efficient energy supply.

In the future, as more storage technology options emerge and the United States transitions to a cleaner energy economy, energy storage is poised to play an even greater role and LG plans to be part of the solution.

LG ANNOUNCES THIRD-QUARTER 2018 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Demand for Premium Products Continue to Grow Despite
Slower Demand in Major Markets, International Trade Challenges

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Oct. 25, 2018 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today reported consolidated sales of KRW 15.43 trillion (USD 13.76 billion) and operating profit of KRW 748.8 billion (USD 667.7 million) for the third quarter of 2018. Revenues were the highest among the three quarters this year, increasing 2.7 percent from the second quarter with operating income up 45 percent from the same period the previous year while the mobile business narrowed its losses significantly.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company recorded third-quarter revenues of KRW 4.85 trillion (USD 4.33 billion) and operating profit of KRW 409.7 billion (USD 365.3 million). Sales were especially strong in Korea, Europe and North America despite the economic slowdown and currency challenges in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. Profitability remained strong and was boosted by the growth of premium appliance sales and continued cost management.

The LG Home Entertainment Company generated third-quarter operating profit of KRW 325.1 billion (USD 289.9 million) on sales of KRW 3.71 trillion (USD 3.31 billion). Even with demand for TV products in developing markets slowing, sales of premium OLED and UHD TVs remained strong. As the year comes to a close, the company plans to increase its focus on premium TV models in key markets to maintain profitability despite the sluggish overall TV market.

The LG Mobile Communications Company recorded sales of KRW 2.04 trillion (USD 1.82 billion) and operating loss of KRW 146.3 billion (USD 130.5 million). Despite the weakening demand for smartphones worldwide and increased competition, the company significantly reduced its operating deficit as a direct result of its business plan and its stronger focus on mid-range products. The rollout of its high-end V40 ThinQ smartphone is expected to boost sales in the fourth quarter. With its business improvement strategy proceeding as planned, the company continues to consolidate and implement a more profitable foundation.

The LG Vehicle Components Company posted third-quarter revenues of KRW 1.18 trillion (USD 1.05 billion), an increase of 41 percent compared with the same period last year and 35 percent higher than the previous quarter mainly due to increased production related to new projects and the acquisition of automotive lighting and headlight systems provider ZKW Group. The third quarter of 2018 marks the first time vehicle component sales have exceeded KRW 1 trillion in the company’s history. Rising raw material prices and increased costs related to new projects contributed to a quarterly operating loss of KRW 42.9 billion (USD 38.3 million).

The LG Business-to-Business Company generated sales this quarter of KRW 576.7 billion (USD 514.2 million) and operating profit of KRW 35.1 billion (USD 31.3 million). Profitability was negatively affected by import duties in the United States and the falling price of solar modules in key markets. While price competition in the solar module market will remain challenging, demand for premium information display products is expected grow in the fourth quarter.

LG DELIVERS ULTIMATE FIVE CAMERA SMARTPHONE WITH LG V40 THINQ

A Truly All-Encompassing Smartphone Camera

Experience to Capture Every Perspective

SEOUL, Oct. 4, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its newest premium smartphone featuring a total of five cameras to redefine the standard of smartphone photography. The latest iteration of the company’s acclaimed V series, the LG V40ThinQ is an uncompromising multimedia powerhouse device designed for today’s generation of storytellers that prefer to communicate with visuals and videos, especially on social media.

The LG V40ThinQ retains the V series design philosophy with an improved 6.4-inch FullVision OLED display and even slimmer bezels than before. Powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 Mobile Platform paired with 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, the LG V40ThinQ again delivers the innovations that has made the LG V series a favorite among power users.

Seeing the Light with Five Cameras

In order to deliver a standout smartphone for today’s content-creating social generation, LG designed the LG V40ThinQ from the ground up to deliver a truly all-encompassing smartphone camera experience. The LG V40ThinQ features a rear camera module with three different lenses: 16MP super wide-angle, 12MP standard angle and 12MP telephoto. The three lenses allow for shutterbugs to frame different shots without changing position relative to the subject. The 107-degree super wide-angle lens captures subjects with more of the background with ease, while the telephoto with 2x optical zoom (or 3.2x the zoom of the wide-angle lens) takes clear shots from distance without a loss in image quality. The Triple Shot feature stitches together the images captured with each of the three lenses into a short video file for easy sharing.

The front camera module features a 5MP wide-angle lens and 8MP standard angle that work in tandem to create the perfect bokeh effect with an on-screen slider to adjust the amount of background blur. Other features allow selfie lovers to personalize their photos even more with unique lighting and special effects.

The pixel size of the main rear camera sensor has been improved by about 40 percent compared to the LG V30, increasing from 1μm to 1.4μm, while the image sensor is more than 18 percent larger than in the LG V30. In additdion to delivering the sharpest and brightest images of any LG smartphone camera, the F1.5 aperture of the main camera delivers greater depth of field, half the shutter lag and significantly faster burst mode  compared to the LG V30.

What’s more, Dual PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) delivers automatic focusing that is 50 percent faster, about twice as fast as the industry average. The advanced HDR feature analyzes and determines the right exposure settings to create perfectly lit shots, eliminating overexposed backgrounds or underexposed subjects. Subjects are always in perfect focus because the camera checks sharpness continuously until the shutter button is depressed.

LG upgraded the camera in the LG V40ThinQ to be even more powerful and intuitive than ever to deliver the best color, composition, white balance and shutter speed. The AI CAM’s new AI Composition feature taps into the phone’s intelligence to frame, capture and recommend an alternative shot to the one taken by the user. AI Auto White Balance (AI AWB) automatically adjusts the color temperature across different lighting situations while AI Shutter selects the right shutter speed, especially useful when trying to capture fast-moving subjects.

Other new features such as Cine Shot, 3D Light Effect, Makeup Pro, Custom Backdrop, My Avatar and AR Emoji make photography on the LG V40ThinQ a whole new experience. Cine Shot makes creating cinemagraphs – images with animation – incredibly easy and fun. Simply shoot a short video with any of the phone’s three rear cameras and “paint” the area to be animated with a finger and the result will be sure to amaze. 3D Light Effect changes the tone of a photo with professional-looking lighting, touch up any selfie with different looks using Makeup Pro or entirely change the background of a selfie with Custom Backdrop. For those who love all things augmented reality, create and share personalized emojis with My Avatar and AR Emoji using one’s own face or one of the provided characters.

Immersive Sight and Sound

The LG V40ThinQ sports a new and improved 6.4-inch QHD+ (3120 x 1440) OLED FullVision display and a bottom bezel that is 1.6mm thinner than its predecessor. The new plastic OLED display is designed to deliver more accurate colors and better luminance consistency. The 4.5 million pixels delivered by the OLED display is the most of any QHD+ smartphone on the market today and allows for the enjoyment of immersive, vivid and vibrant content that only an LG OLED display can deliver.

LG has always prioritized high fidelity audio in its smartphones and the LG V40ThinQ is no exception, being the first LG phone to be tuned with Meridian Audio. The 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC produces a balanced sound signature that comes extremely close to the quality of an original recording. And Boombox Speaker, originally introduced on the LG G7ThinQ, doubles the bass of conventional smartphone speakers by utilizing the internal space of the device as a resonance chamber. When placed on a solid surface or hollow box, the LG V40ThinQ acts like a woofer to amplify the bass even more.

Minimalist Design Built to Last

The clean lines and sophisticated colors emphasizes the three main design elements of the LG V40ThinQ: smooth touch, unique color and seamless form. With the objective to create a design that will stand the test of time, the simple yet beautiful exterior is the perfect complement to the wealth of innovative technologies found on the LG V40ThinQ.

LG’s proprietary Silky BlastTM process etches the tempered glass back with microscopic pits to create a smoother matte finish which feels extremely comfortable in the hand without being slippery. In addition to its more premium appearance, the matte glass is more practical due to its higher resistance to fingerprints and stains. The phone will be available in the charming colors of New Aurora Black, New Platinum Gray, New Moroccan Blue and eye-catching Carmine Red.

The LG V40ThinQ retains the slim and light design heritage of the V series, weighing only 169g and measuring a svelte 7.7mm in thickness. Like its predecessor, the LG V40ThinQ meets the U.S. Department of Defense requirements for durability, passing 14 MIL-STD 810G Transit Drop Test categories for suitability in military operations and is IP68 rated.

“The LG V40ThinQ was designed with the main goal to deliver an uncompromised experience for users to create, consume and share high quality content,” said Hwang Jeong-hwan, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The versatility of the camera and the proven V series platform makes the LG V40ThinQ a serious option for customers looking for a premium smartphone that does it all.”

Inroducing LG’s Hybrid Watch

Alongside the  LG V40ThinQ, LG announced its first hybrid smartwatch, the LG Watch W7, a wearable device that combines mechanical movement with digital functionalities. As the first LG wearable to run the new Wear OS by Google platform, the LG Watch W7 is designed for consumers who value the look of a traditional analog timepiece but desire the convenient functionalities of a connected smartwatch.

Developed in partnership with Soprod SA of Switzerland, the LG Watch W7 features high-precision quartz movement and physical watch hands wrapped in a stainless steel body. Combining smart and mechanical features in a single timepiece gives the LG Watch W7 unique powering options. In full operation mode on a single charge, the LG Watch W7 can run for up to two days and then an additional 3-4 days in analog-only mode. In mechanical watch-only mode with its “smart” features disabled, the watch can operate for up to 100 days, or more than three months before requiring a charge.

In addition to keeping accurate time, the analog hands also display additional information such as altimeter, barometer, stopwatch, timer and compass directions. Because this device runs Wear OS by Google, it can be customized thousands of different ways with unique watch faces and complications available online. What’s more, the watch is compatible with all standard 22mm watch bands.

Launch dates, pricing and additional details for both the LG V40ThinQ and LG Watch W7 will be announced locally at the time of availability.
