LG Showcases Self-Sufficient Smart Home in Spain

Technology and innovation can be great allies to our precious planet. To demonstrate this point, LG Spain constructed a passive, connected house in Madrid, attracting a variety of different personalities and enlisting them in the Smart Green cause.

An outside view of LG LG Hanok ThinQ & Passivhaus

LG Hanok ThinQ & Passivhaus is based on the well-known architectural style of traditional Korean homes. South Korea’s rich cultural heritage, Hanok, has always been important to LG’s business philosophy, informing its long-standing commitment to innovation, growth and protecting the environment. Hanok combined with ThinQ is the coming together of the traditional and the new. Passivhaus, also Passive House, is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a structure that maintains ideal interior conditions while using 70-90 percent less energy compared to a conventional building.

An electric car charging up at the EV charging station placed outside the LG LG Hanok ThinQ & Passivhaus

The efficient LG products inside are all powered with energy collected by solar panels integrated into the house. Among other things, the solar panels supply enough energy to charge an electric vehicle and operate LG’s Therma V Air to Water Heat Pump System, which provides heating and hot water supply four times more efficiently than a conventional boiler. Any surplus energy collected is stored in connected batteries for later use.

Through this forward-thinking project, LG Spain is effectively demonstrating a viable way for home owners to make efficient use of clean energy without having to sacrifice everyday conveniences. In the future, this non-polluting method of powering the home could provide additional income, with the surplus energy captured by the solar panels sold to local electricity providers.

An inside view of LG LG Hanok ThinQ & Passivhaus with LG ThinQ AI-enabled eco-friendly home appliances

In addition to eco-friendly appliances, there is another factor that can help achieve a more efficient home: connectivity. Utilizing LG ThinQ, LG Hanok shows how enhanced connectivity can optimize energy usage throughout the house. LG’s advanced technology tracks the energy consumption of each organically-connected device – TV, monitors, washing machine, smart speaker and refrigerator – in real-time and automatically supplies the ideal amount of electricity, conserving power and the planet’s resources. With ThinQ, users also have the convenience of voice control via the Google Assistant, enabling them to control the lights, oven, blinds and more with simple voice commands.

A garden with over 50 plant species outside of the LG Hanok

The LG Hanok also has a garden with over 50 plant species that will absorb more and more carbon dioxide as they grow. LG encourages all visitors to plant a tree, and expects the total number of plants in the garden to surpass 1,000 within the next few months. Located at LG Spain’s headquarters, The LG Hanok ThinQ & Passivhaus has already received important visitors including Chun Hong-jo, South Korea’s ambassador to Spain.

A group photo of LG Hanok ThinQ & Passivhaus’ visitors including Chun Hong-jo, South Korea’s ambassador to Spain

The Spanish population is very aware of the problems facing the planet, with more than 50 percent expressing concern about green issues. However, Spain needs to do more as a country to counter threats to the environment. In its Smart Green strategy, LG Spain proposes to change things for the better by taking action rather than waiting for local government or other entities to lead the way.

A man is watching LG TV supporting Amazon Alexa while holding the remote in one hand at home.

SEOUL, May 23, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) will begin rolling out Amazon Alexa support in 14 countries* to the company’s 2019 TV models featuring artificial intelligence. The update will be implemented through the Alexa app on 2019 TVs featuring ThinQ AI including LG UHD TVs, NanoCell TVs and OLED TVs. Customers in North America will begin receiving the update this month, followed by customers in Europe and Asia in the weeks to come.

Following the introduction of Google Assistant on 2018 LG TVs with ThinQ AI, LG is delivering more choices and options with the addition of Amazon Alexa capabilities to its 2019 TVs with ThinQ AI. With the Alexa app, owners of compatible LG TVs can ask questions, control smart home products, access over 90,000 Alexa Skills and more, all without the need for a separate external device. And LG’s 2019 TVs can understand hundreds of voice commands and handle requests of greater complexity than ever before thanks to more advanced LG ThinQ AI conversational voice recognition technology.

Using Alexa Routines, users can link together a series of actions such as providing traffic information, reporting the weather and listing the day’s agenda items simply by saying “Alexa, start my morning.” They can also play music or audio books and take advantage of the numerous skills already available on the Alexa platform. And because Alexa is built-in, new updates and features for the voice service will continue to be available to LG AI TV users moving forward.

What’s more, LG 2019 OLED and select NanoCell TVs will receive AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support via a mid-year update. With AirPlay 2 support, owners of this year’s ThinQ AI TVs will be able to watch videos on the Apple TV app and other video apps as well as enjoy photos music on compatible LG TVs connected to an Apple device. And with Apple HomeKit, customers will be able to control the newest LG TVs with ThinQ AI by interacting with Siri or the Home app.

“The addition of Alexa support is another example of LG’s commitment to simplifying our customers’ lives,” said Brian Kwon, president of Mobile Communications and Home Entertainment companies at LG. “We will continue to enrich the user experience going forward with a diverse range of convenient AI services and features.”

LG TO AGGRESSIVELY EXPAND MARKET REACH OF ADVANCED DRYER IN 2019

Features DUAL Inverter Heat Pump™ and Auto Cleaning
Condenser System for Optimal Efficiency, Performance and Convenience

Front view of LG dryer with DUAL Inverter Heat Pump™

SEOUL, May 22, 2019 — As a key component of its aggressive strategy to expand its share of the global clothing care market, LG Electronics (LG) is committed to expanding the reach of its advanced DUAL Inverter Heat Pump dryer to 50 markets this year, greatly increasing availability of this popular appliance worldwide.

With energy efficiency and airborne particulate management becoming more and more important world over, new dryer technologies are being embraced by consumers in both developed as well as emerging markets. LG’s new DUAL Inverter Heat Pump dryer with Auto Cleaning Condenser are expected to meet and exceed the expectations of consumers in North America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, regions where LG home appliance products already have strong brand recognition.

LG’s advanced dryer incorporates the company’s industry-leading DUAL Inverter Heat Pump to deliver efficient and effective drying that today’s consumers desire. The pump employs two cylinders that work simultaneously to compress the refrigerant, enabling the appliance to achieve faster drying times, enhanced performance and a stellar energy efficiency rating of A+++-10 percent. And because the DUAL Inverter Heat Pump dryer operates at a lower temperature than most, it is gentler on clothes and reduces shrinkage.

In addition to greater efficiency and results, the LG dryer offers more convenience with its Auto Cleaning Condenser feature. One of the most annoying aspects of today’s dryers is the amount of lint, dust and fibers that accumulate on the condenser, blocking proper air circulation and increasing energy consumption. The LG DUAL Inverter Heat Pump dryer uses powerful jets of water to remove lint and dust from the condenser automatically, making regular manual cleaning a thing of the past.

“Busy consumers in both developed and emerging markets show that they’re willing to pay for appliances that are more efficient and save them time,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “Our DUAL Inverter Heat Pump dryer is a clear customer favorite in the markets where it’s available and we are confident that new customers will embrace the benefits of this dryer as well.”

and Expansion of Carbon Offset Projects

The logo of LG Electronics

SEOUL, May 20, 2019 ― LG Electronics (LG) has launched its aggressive Zero Carbon 2030 initiative, committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from its global operations within 12 years.

In line with its larger sustainable business strategy, LG will look to reduce carbon emissions from its global operations by 50 percent compared to a 2017 baseline by implementing various carbon reduction and renewable energy initiatives. This effort will help bring LG closer to reaching its ultimate goal of carbon neutrality, achieving a net-zero carbon emissions footprint by balancing carbon emissions with carbon removal.

Through a variety of strategic initiatives, the company will cut carbon emissions across its global production sites from nearly 2 million tons recorded in 2017 to 960,000 tons by the end of 2030. LG is looking to expand its high-efficiency facilities and technologies targeting greenhouse gas reduction, alleviating the creation of carbon emissions during the production process.

LG will expand renewable energy installations using solar energy products and actively utilize its own business-to-business technology solutions such as high-efficiency chillers and Energy Management Systems (EMS) to reduce carbon emissions.

Additionally, through the expansion of its Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects, LG plans to secure Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits. Such forward-thinking CDM initiatives promote clean development in emerging nations by allowing businesses with carbon reduction commitments to implement emissions reduction projects in developing countries using their own capital and technologies. Such projects are critical to earning CER credits, which are issued by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) after a thorough evaluation process.

As the first household appliance manufacturer to acquire CER credits in 2015, LG paved the way by utilizing highly efficient home appliances and cementing its status as a pioneering environmentally-conscious company. By the end of 2018, LG had secured a total of 340,000 tons of CER through its CDM initiatives.

“Our commitment to combating global climate change is unwavering. LG’s progressive steps in reducing carbon emissions at workplaces the world over, with many more UN CDM projects in the works, exemplify the company’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability leadership,” said Lee Young-jae, vice president of environmental safety at LG Electronics.

WITH LG G8 THINQ LESS IS ACTUALLY MORE

“Less is more.”

With these words, German-born architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe defied the conventional wisdom of his time and began what was to become a powerful trend in the design industry.

Functionally, the LG G8ThinQ, LG bring interesting new features like Hand ID to the table. But that’s not the only aspects people like best about the phone. Consumers and focus group participants say what stands out most in the LG G8ThinQ is its simple design. No camera bump, no receiver hall, nothing to deter its sleek form and minimalist aesthetic to create the perfect physical embodiment of the less is more design philosophy.

One of the initial candidates for LG G8 ThinQ’s rear design

Death to the Camera Bump

As cameras have become the main feature on mobile phones, companies have spared no expense in squeezing in the best camera hardware they can get. This has resulted in smartphones with ugly protrusion and bumps to accommodate the biggest and the best performing cameras.

Over the years this bump has become an inevitable part of modern smartphone designs. Beyond the unpleasant aesthetics, this bump causes the camera glass lens to scratch more easily and the phone to wobble uncomfortably when set down on a table.

The final rear side design of the LG G8 ThinQ that eliminated the protruded area of cameras module for its minimal profile

Advanced camera features in the LG G8ThinQ such as the larger camera sensor, Time-of-Flight Z Camera and super wide angle lens, meant removing the camera bump proved to be no easy task. But with a firm focus on the ultimate design philosophy of less being more, LG designers and engineers were able to work together to mount the camera in the LG G8ThinQ completely under the glass, creating a sleek look without sacrificing any consumer benefit. After considering over 30 different design ideas, the look of the G8ThinQ was finalized.

The side view of the LG G8 ThinQ smartphone with the implementation of the Zero Camera Bump form factor

A smooth, polished device, the LG G8ThinQ solved a long-standing problem without sacrificing beauty. Engineered from concept stage to reflect the needs of consumers, it effortlessly combines good design with simplicity and a premium finish.

Four-side Bending Glass for a Smooth, Soft Grip

Consumers usually point out size, weight, width and ease-of-use with one hand when asked what makes a smartphone comfortable to use. The LG G8ThinQ was designed with every one of these touchpoints in mind.

A woman holds the LG G8 ThinQ out to take a selfie in Times Square, New York.

The LG G8ThinQ is a compact handset with a 6.1-inch OLED display that’s 151.9 millimeters tall, 71.8 millimeters wide and 8.4 millimeters thick and feels smaller in the hand than its predecessor. The four-sided glass exterior creates a smoother curve and makes it hard to distinguish where the glass ends and the metal begins.

Perfecting Minimalism with Crystal Sound OLED

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away,” said the late poet and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The LG G8ThinQ has done just that, discarding everything that’s non-essential – including the ubiquitous receiver speaker – in its quest for perfect minimalism.

A concept image that describes the Crystal Sound OLED technology of the LG G8 ThinQ

Instead of a speaker for the ear, the LG G8ThinQ uses physics to create sound without a conventional smartphone receiver. By attaching a piezoelectric speaker to the display, the G8ThinQ is able to generate great sound through Crystal Sound OLED technology. What’s more, when used in conjunction with the bottom-firing speaker in the G8ThinQ, stereo output is achieved.

The rear side of LG G8 ThinQ

The appealing LG G8ThinQ is a triumph of minimalist design. It does away with all but the most necessary elements of a smartphone while taking user convenience to the next level. The LG G8ThinQ: definitive proof that you can go minimal without sacrificing form or function.

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Apr. 30, 2019 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced consolidated sales of KRW 14.92 trillion (USD 13.27 billion) and operating profit of KRW 900.6 billion (USD 801.25 million) for the first quarter of 2019. Although overall first-quarter revenues and operating income declined somewhat in 2019 versus 2018, the home appliance company reported record first-quarter sales and profits. Operating income was 1,090 percent higher than the fourth quarter of 2018, reflecting improved cost structures across major business units.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company generated first-quarter revenues of KRW 5.47 trillion (USD 4.86 billion) and operating profit of KRW 727.6 billion (USD 647.3 million), the highest quarterly revenue and operating income for the business unit in LG history. Sales were especially strong in Europe and Asia, contributing to growth of 11 percent year-on-year and 26 percent quarter-on-quarter on robust sales of premium and growth products especially in the domestic Korean market. The increase in operating profit of more than 30 percent from the same period last year also can be attributed to the growing popularity of high-growth products such as Styler, clothes dryers, air purifiers and vacuum cleaners as well as effective cost reduction efforts.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported first-quarter revenues of KRW 4.02 trillion (USD 3.58 billion) and operating profit of KRW 346.5 billion (USD 308.27 million), a decrease of 3 percent from the same period the previous year due to seasonal weakness in demand and the lack of global sporting events. Operating income increased significantly from the previous quarter thanks to greater marketing efficiencies and improvement cost structure. The launch of new 2019 premium products including OLED TVs, NanoCell TVs and large-screen Ultra HD TVs is expected to generate additional sales opportunities in the second quarter.

The LG Mobile Communications Company saw first-quarter sales of KRW 1.51 trillion (USD 1.34 billion) and narrowed its quarterly operating loss to KRW 203.5 billion (USD 181.05 million) as LG continues to rebuild its smartphone business. Operating results improved from the previous quarter as a result of stronger business structure. Looking ahead, the launch of LG V50ThinQ 5G smartphone is expected to create positive momentum in the second quarter while the relocation of LG’s smartphone manufacturing center from Pyeongtaek, Korea to Haiphong, Vietnam will help improve profitability and LG’s global competitiveness in the second half of the year.

The LG Vehicle Component Solutions Company recorded first-quarter revenues of KRW 1.35 trillion (USD 1.20 billion), a 61 percent increase from the same period last year. Increased sales at ZKW contributed to an improvement in operating results despite rising raw material prices and initial production costs associated with new projects. Trends in the global auto market associated with low fuel prices and increased sales of luxury vehicles and SUVs will create more opportunities for LG’s automotive components business.

The LG Business Solutions Company posted first-quarter sales of KRW 626.6 billion (USD 556.58 million), 5 percent higher than the previous quarter and 3 percent lower than the first quarter a year ago. Operating profit of KRW 55.5 billion (USD 49.38 million) was 272 percent higher than the previous quarter but 3 percent lower year-on-year due to the impact of U.S. tariffs on solar module imports and ongoing significant price erosion in major markets. The information display business plans to improve profitability by expanding sales of premium displays and LED products.

From digital signage for registration areas and session venues to 4K TVs for theaters and the broadcast studio, LG displays were ubiquitous at the 2019 NAB Show. Dozens of 49-inch LG screens greet attendees at hundreds of technical and business sessions. LG 70-, 65- and 55-inch 4K UHD TVs were used throughout the convention including the Futures Park in the North Hall, where among others, NAB PILOT, the AWARN Alliance and Trivini Digital are featuring LG displays.

LG 65- and 55-inch class 4K UHD displays were used by Broadcast Education Association (BEA) digital research poster sessions and conference sessions, while 70-inch class TVs were featured in the screening room for faculty and student creative awards in BEA’s exhibit hall located in the Las Vegas Westgate Convention Center.

The Road to ATSC 3.0 exhibit, presented by NAB, the Consumer Technology Association and the Advanced Television Systems Committee, was the NAB Show’s epicenter of all things related to the next-generation broadcast standard known as ATSC 3.0. LG and its Zenith R&D subsidiary are among the leading co-developers of the new standard.

Unique screens from LG Business Solutions, which offers a broad array of UHD digital signage and commercial displays, represented the core of the exhibit design – meeting the industry’s goal of telling the Next Gen TV story in fresh new ways. The centerpiece of the main stage was a 12-1/2-foot-wide by 7-foot tall 2.0 mm pixel pitch LG Direct View LED display, which produces outstanding color, contrast, saturation and bright-ness levels optimized for broadcast applications.

The exhibit includes a broadcast camera feeding a 55-inch LG OLED to demonstrate the use case of LG Direct View LED screens as a digital backdrop in TV and Cinema production. LG OLED TVs are used by Hollywood post production facilities as consumer reference monitors because of their superior color accuracy, contrast, and calibration capabilities. Award-winning 55-inch class LG OLED TVs also were selected by Pearl TV, Dolby and the AWARN Alliance for the Road to ATSC 3.0 exhibit.

Another unique example of LG digital signage displays at the NAB Show were six 86-inch LG “Ultra Stretch” displays (86BH5C) configured in double-sided vertical pillars in the Las Vegas Convention Center lobby and North Hall. Each display measures just over seven feet tall and about two feet wide for amazing eye catching displays.

Offering broadcasters a sneak peek at the latest advancement of the LG OLED technology for the first time, the company previewed the awe-inspiring LG Transparent OLED display. Broadcast executives, news directors and chief engineers marveled at its super-thin profile and advanced transparent panel that is ideal for TV news and talk show sets. The LG Transparent OLED delivers stunning images while allowing viewers or a camera to see people and objects behind it. In addition, the NHK 8K Theater featured a proto-type 88-inch LG OLED 8K display with 16 times the resolution of HDTV, provided by LG Display, sister company of LG Electronics.

LG PARTNERS WITH SWISSCOM TO BRING 5G TO EUROPE

Swiss Customers to be First in the Region to Experience the
Power of Next Generation Connectivity with LG V50ThinQ 5G People are looking the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, which will be released in Swisscom retail stores

SEOUL, Apr. 11, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) and Swisscom announced the imminent arrival of commercial 5G services in Europe with a collaboration that would see the LG V50ThinQ 5G smartphone and accompanying LG Dual Screen in Swisscom retail stores in the weeks to come. The partnership with Swisscom is just the beginning for LG as it engages other European carriers with plans to launch 5G service in 2019.

The LG V50ThinQ 5G is powered by the new Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 855 Mobile Platform and Snapdragon X50 5G modem. And because 5G requires more energy than LTE, LG’s first 5G handset is equipped with a 4,000mAh battery which is 20 percent larger than the battery found in the LG V40ThinQ. And to handle the extra workload and keep the V50ThinQ 5G running cool, the heat-dissipating Vapor Chamber system in the new V series smartphone is nearly three times larger than the cooling system found in its predecessor.

With 5G’s promise to deliver more content in less time, Swisscom customers will be able to add LG’s Dual Screen to the V50 for even more 5G fun. Once attached, the Dual Screen opens up like a folder to reveal a 6.2-inch OLED display, expanding the possibilities of fast 5G technology such as live streaming music concerts and sporting events. Turned horizontally, the LG V50ThinQ 5G with Dual Screen turns into a fully functional gaming device, with the Dual Screen taking the place of a dedicated control pad. Multitasking takes on a whole new level of convenience with two displays: enjoy a movie on one screen while searching IMDB on the other without minimizing the active window. Most importantly, the Dual Screen can be quickly detached to save battery and weight when on the go.

“LG is very focused on expanding its leadership in 5G by introducing leading-edge devices and forging customer-oriented collaborations with carrier partners such as Swisscom,” said Morris Lee, senior vice president and business unit leader at LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Strong collaborations will be required to accelerate 5G commercialization in Europe and LG is eager to be a key player once 5G service becomes widely available in the region.”

“As the number one ICT provider in Switzerland, Swisscom is committed to offering customers the best experience and shaping the future,” said Dirk Wierzbitzki, head of products and marketing and member of the executive board of Swisscom. “LG is a key player to make 5G become a reality and thus inspire Swiss consumers with the next generation connectivity in a networked world.”

LG OLED TV HIGHLIGHTS FINE DETAILS OF KOREAN EMBROIDERY AT UNESCO EXHIBITION

The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W and promotional banner introduce Korea’s traditional “chasu” embroidery.

In collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), LG will help spread the legacy of one of Korea’s longest-standing traditions, chasu, the country’s unique take on the craft of embroidery. Under the banner, The Royal Palace, the cultural event is expected to deliver a next-level visual experience to visitors through the exquisite features of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W, popularly known as LG’s Wallpaper TV.

Korean embroidery artist Lee Jung-sook discuss the “chasu” with attendees at The Royal Palace event.

During UNESCO’s 10-day exhibition in Paris (April 8-18), LG will showcase around 100 traditional embroidery designs from acclaimed Korean artist Lee Jung-sook. Both LG and UNESCO hope to capture the legacy of Korea’s traditional embroidery and its ability to convey the essence of the nation’s unique history and culture for all to experience.

Three visitors look at the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W which displays a “chasu” artwork.

Since partnering with the Cultural Heritage Administration in 2016 to preserve and promote Korea’s cultural heritage all over the world, LG has undertaken various far-reaching initiatives to promote the nation’s distinctive cultural assets, many of which take their rightful place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The UNESCO exhibit raises awareness of disappearing traditions by communicating with a global audience the beauty of crafts and skills from an earlier time.

The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W and promotional banners form a display that introduces Korea’s traditional “chasu” embroidery.

Visitors to the exhibition can enjoy a spectrum of Lee’s embroidery work, ranging from her powerful emblem pieces to her colorful accessories, all presented on LG’s stunning OLED TV which reproduces colors and details like no other display.

The LG Wallpaper TV’s razor-thin profile and beautiful design is built on LG OLED’s revolutionary pixel dimming control technology that provides the perfect platform to highlight the meticulous details and craftmanship of Korean traditional embroidery. Almost one with the wall, the slimness and nearly invisible edges of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R add to the immersive experience when viewing beautiful, hyper-realistic images on a TV that would feel right at home in an art gallery.
