LG Offers Enhanced Security and Depth Measuring Selfie CameraA graphic showing the parts that make up Infineon’s REAL3™ Image Sensor Chip, which will be included in the LG G8 ThinQ

SEOUL, KOREA, AND MUNICH, GERMANY, Feb. 7, 2019 — LG Electronics and Infineon Technologies AG have teamed up to introduce leading edge Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology to smartphone selfie photo lovers world over.

Infineon’s REAL3TM image sensor chip will play a key role in the front-facing camera of the upcoming LG G8 ThinQ, to be unveiled in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress 2019. Building upon the combined expertise of Infineon and pmdtechnologies in algorithms for processed 3D point clouds (a set of data points in space produced by 3D scanning), the innovative sensor will deliver a new level of front camera capability in a smartphone.

While other 3D technologies utilize complex algorithms to calculate an object’s distance from the camera lens, the ToF image sensor chip delivers more accurate measurements by capturing infrared light as it is reflected off the subject. As a result, ToF is faster and more effective in ambient light, reducing the workload on the application processor thereby also reducing power consumption.

And due to its fast response speed, ToF technology is widely used in various biometric authentication methods, such as face-recognition. What’s more, because ToF sees objects in 3D and is not affected by light from external sources, it delivers an excellent recognition rate, both indoors and out, ideal for implementation in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications.

The world’s leading manufacturer of power semiconductors, Infineon is also recognized for its technological excellence in sensor solutions. The German chip maker enables highly reliable automotive, power management and digital security applications. The company developed the ToF technology featured in the LG G8 ThinQ for use in both premium, high-end smartphones as well as mid-end devices.

“Infineon is poised to revolutionize the market,” said Andreas Urschitz, division president of Infineon’s Power Management & Multimarket division. “We have demonstrated service beyond the mere product level – specifically catering to phone OEMs, associated reference design houses and camera module manufacturers. Within five years, we expect 3D cameras to be found in most smartphones and Infineon will contribute a significant share.”

“Keeping in mind LG’s goal to provide real value to its mobile customers, our newest flagship was designed with ToF technology from inception to give users a unique and secure verification system without sacrificing camera capabilities,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president and head of Product Strategy at LG Mobile Communications Company. “The LG G8 ThinQ featuring ToF will be the optimal choice for users in search of a premium smartphone that offers unmatched camera capabilities.”

A panorama view of LG’s booth at ISE 2019.

AMSTERDAM, Feb. 5, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) is showcasing its advanced information display technology at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2019 held in Amsterdam, Netherlands from February 5 to 8. From Transparent OLED Signage to a full lineup of LED products, LG can transform any space into awe-inspiring, fully functional digital environments and deliver innovative business solutions tailored to customers’ needs.

Making its European debut is the one-of-a kind LG OLED Falls display that will welcome visitors at the main entrance of LG’s booth is made possible by 88 flexible Open Frame OLED displays. The signage features displays that curve up to 1,000R for wrapping around various surfaces, perfect for business-to-business applications that require a truly customizable approach. The video demo of a forest, glacier, waterfall, blizzard and others, is a one-of-a-kind experience of natural wonders.

Beyond the OLED Falls exhibit, visitors will experience LG’s unique Transparent OLED Signage, a state-of-the-art product that seems more science fiction than reality. Designed for both retail and gallery environments, actual products can be clearly seen behind the 38 percent transparent display while video or images are shown overlaid in front of the object. The Transparent OLED Signage’s open frame design can be tiled, making it perfect for large spaces where customer interaction can seal the deal, such as in an automotive showroom.

LG’s fine-pitch LAPE series of LED displays separates the power module from the screen, resulting in an ultra-thin profile for a more streamlined installation. The smaller, lightweight LDM (LED Display Module) allows for easier installation – both mounting and hanging – with support for true concave and convex curvature up to 1,000R. With a compact pixel pitch of 1.5 to 2.5mm and brightness of up to 1,000 nits, LG’s LAPE series delivers vivid picture quality in every indoor environment, from retail malls to conference halls.

The LAA series bezel-less 130-inch Meeting Room LED Screen with 1.5mm pixel pitch was designed for mid- to large-sized conference rooms. The embedded audio system allows users to communicate and share images without the need for external speakers. With optional software, this display solution is designed to be compatible with Crestron room control system.

LG’s Color Transparent LED Film is a large-size solution that can be applied to any-sized glass surface to transform it magically into actual digital signage. With a maximum transparency of 73 percent, the glass retains its original properties with the film being unnoticeable when not in use. The film itself is self-adhesive and can be removed easily with no sticky residue. Delivering a wide range of colors at 24mm pitch while still maintaining high transparency, this unique solution is suitable for displaying everything from brand logos to full-color videos.

At ISE 2019 LG is also exhibiting a groundbreaking .44mm Even Bezel Video Wall that delivers vivid, dynamic images with consistent color uniformity for higher and wider viewing angles without distortion. And LG’s proprietary webOS 3.0 operating system makes it extremely easy to maintain and create content. This display solution is optimized for control rooms and venues that require multi-screen setups such as shopping malls and lecture halls.

LG’s new 86-inch 4K Interactive Digital Board with active pen boasts IPS In-cell Touch technology with a sleek 29mm bezel design that employs an innovative direct bonding process to eliminate the gap between the LCD panel and protective glass. This combination delivers a faster response time for a realistic writing experience that is perfect for university lecture halls and corporate conference rooms.

Also coming to ISE will be LG’s IP-rated outdoor signage products. Model 55XE4F is waterproof and protected from dust while also being approximately 64 percent lighter and 37 percent thinner than the previous 55-inch model. This allows the display to be installed almost anywhere, such as on a wall, ceiling or stand. What’s more, the tempered front glass features a shatterproof film to prevent serious injuries even when subject to a strong impact.

“The next-generation signage technologies that we are exhibiting at this year’s ISE are without a doubt some of the most forward-thinking innovations in the industry today,” said Lee Choong-hwoan, head of the Information Display business unit of LG Electronics Business Solutions Company. “The unique technology featured in LG’s OLED and LED signage products allows us deliver ultimate solutions to customers in various industries.”

LG’s leading edge business solutions will be on display in Hall 12 (Stand 12-K90) of RAI Amsterdam from February 5-8.

LG Announces 2018 Financial Results

Highest Annual Profit for Home Appliance and
Home Entertainment Businesses in LG History

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Jan. 31, 2019 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced record full-year revenues of KRW 61.3 trillion (USD 54.4 billion) in 2018, exceeding sales of 60 trillion won for the second year in a row. Full-year profit of KRW 2.70 trillion (USD 2.40 billion) increased nearly 10 percent from 2017 reflecting record profitability from appliances and home entertainment products.

Fourth-quarter 2018 revenues of KRW 15.77 trillion (USD 13.99 billion) were higher than the third quarter but 7 percent lower than the last quarter of 2017 primarily due to lower sales of mobile products. As a result, fourth-quarter operating income declined to KRW 75.7 billion (USD 67.1 million).

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company reported full-year 2018 revenues of KRW 19.36 trillion (USD 17.17 billion), an increase of nearly 5 percent from the previous year, generating a profit of KRW 1.52 trillion (USD 1.35 billion), the highest in company history. Fourth-quarter revenues of 4.33 trillion (USD 3.84 billion) increased more than 3 percent from the same period last year with sales in Asia and Europe holding steady despite exchange rate challenges in Central and South America and political uncertainty in the Middle East. LG’s strongest performing unit in 2018 is expected to again lead the company this year with strong demand for premium products and consistent growth in South Korea while working to mitigate international trade and exchange rate risks overseas.

The LG Home Entertainment Company recorded full-year revenues of KRW 16.21 trillion (USD 14.37 billion) with a record-high profit of KRW 1.52 trillion (USD 1.35 billion) thanks to the strengths of LG’s premium product lineup. Fourth-quarter 2018 sales of KRW 4.56 trillion (USD 4.04 billion) were 6 percent lower from the previous year but 23 percent higher than the previous quarter due in large part to strong seasonal demand. Going forward, LG intends to grow both revenue and operating profit by focusing on increasing sales of premium OLED TVs and large-screen Ultra HD TVs.

The LG Mobile Communications Company reported 2018 revenues of KRW 7.98 trillion (USD 7.08 billion) with sales in the fourth quarter totaling KRW 1.71 trillion (USD 1.51 billion), a decrease of 16 percent from the third quarter. Although the full-year operating loss increased to KRW 790.1 billion (USD 700.65 million), the mobile division’s business structure showed improvement as a result of better material cost controls and overhead efficiencies based on the company’s platform modularization strategy. In 2019, LG’s mobile division will push 5G products and smartphones featuring different form factors while focusing on key markets where the LG brand remains strong.

The LG Vehicle Components Company reported solid full-year 2018 revenues of KRW 4.29 trillion (USD 3.80 billion), a 28 percent increase from 2017. Quarterly revenues of KRW 1.4 trillion (USD 1.24 billion), the highest performing quarter in the division’s history, were 71 percent higher than the same period last year and nearly 20 percent more than the third quarter largely due to new infotainment orders and strong performance from the ZKW business in Europe. Uncertainties in the vehicle component market related primarily to international trade issues are expected to contribute to flatter growth in the industry in the months ahead.

The LG Business Solutions Company, recorded full-year 2018 revenues of KRW 2.41 trillion (USD 2.13 billion) with profit of KRW 167.8 billion (USD 148.8 million). The business unit recorded revenues of KRW 597.8 billion (USD 530.1 million) in the fourth quarter – down 11 percent from the same period the year before while up 4 percent from the previous quarter. Fourth-quarter operating profit of KRW 14.9 billion (USD 13.2 million) was impacted by increased investments, the effects of import tariffs and the continuing price depreciation of solar panels, which offset cost improvements. Despite this, LG plans to increase profitability in the business unit by diversifying target markets for its solar business, maximizing the operation of its U.S. solar factory and targeting new growth areas for its information display business.

In Pursuit of Fresh Air

An alarming report from the World Health Organization (WHO) recently stated that 90 percent of people worldwide are breathing polluted air. As air quality declines, the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including asthma, increases for people living in the worst affected cities.

An infographic explaining geographical estimations from the World Health Organization regarding levels of air pollutionData Source: Air pollution – the silent killer (https://bit.ly/2Us08ZM)

Most agree that to curb global warming, we all need to enact a variety of measures such as driving less and taking fewer flights, while increasing recycling and conservation efforts to reduce our carbon print – the amount of carbon dioxide a person is responsible for putting into the atmosphere. Generally, any man-made substance introduced into the atmosphere can be considered a pollutant.

We have to not only protect our environment but also take care of our well-being and that of our loved ones. Hence, it is very important to invest in good air purifying products that filter out the toxins that breeze into our homes, thereby making the air more breathable and preserving our health. While people can wear an air filter mask when outside the home, it is wise to choose a high-quality air purifier for indoor space, one that’s certified for its ability to remove fine dust, particles and other harmful matter.

Air purifiers from LG’s air solutions can help consumers improve the indoor air quality if they choose to invest in a good and effective appliance. Especially for those having asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or allergic reactions, the effective HEPA filters are proven to trap 99.97 percent of extremely small airborne particles and other pollutants.

A woman on the sofa enjoys the enhanced indoor air quality thanks to LG’s DUALCOOL air conditioner, which detects and eliminates tiny airborne particles such as PM1.0.

Helping families establish the optimal indoor living environment, LG has set new standards with its new LG DUALCOOL air conditioner, a device that not only cools and heats effectively and efficiently, but also offers comprehensive air purification. The air purifying technology in LG’s DUALCOOL detects and eliminates particles as small as PM1.0. Its Micro Dust Filter absorbs negatively charged microparticles including germs and bacteria to help keep families safe. DUALCOOL’s Indoor Air Quality Display shows the status of indoor air quality, using six colorful icons that make it easy to see the quality of the air at any time.

The unique multi-filter system employed in the LG PuriCare 360° captures six different types of particles including the peskiest indoor allergens to deliver purer, cleaner air. Its HEPA filtration system traps 99.97 percent of ultra-fine particulates. In addition to capturing allergens, the deodorization filter removes odors (such as food and smoke), smog and harmful airborne chemicals. Furthermore, the Baby Care feature directs gentle airflow from the base of the PuriCare to create the ideal environment for infants and toddlers.
