LG V35 THINQ: A FASTER, SMARTER V SERIES PHONE

LG’s Award-Winning Platform Updated with Latest

Mobile Processor, Camera, AI Features and DTS:X

The front and back view of the LG V35 ThinQ in New Aurora Black and New Platinum Gray

SEOUL, May 30, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) today announces the LG V35ThinQ, the latest iteration of its highly acclaimed V series of premium multimedia smartphones. The LG V35ThinQ continues to inject new energy into the V series platform with even faster performance, and enhanced photography, audio and AI functionalities. The newest V series device will be rolling out in the Americas starting in June followed by limited markets in Asia, Middle East and Africa.

Catering to the most demanding of users, the device features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile platform paired with 6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of internal storage. The LG V35ThinQ retains the stunning 6-inch 18:9 OLED FullVision display with QHD+ (2880 x 1440) resolution in a compact form factor that weighs only 157g and measures a thin 7.3mm.

The display is further accentuated with the scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5 that is curved around the edge for a sleek and premium feel. The LG V35ThinQ is built to withstand the rigors of daily use with its IP68 rating for dust and water resistance and a passing grade in 14 of the US military’s MIL-STD 810G tests for reliability of equipment performance in harsh environments.

A Better, Smarter Camera

The LG V35ThinQ sports a new rear dual camera module featuring two 16MP lenses in standard and Super Wide Angle configurations that was first introduced in the new LG G7ThinQ. The Super Wide Angle camera now features less edge distortion with sharper and more natural photos from previously. The front camera gets a huge bump in resolution from 5MP to 8MP.

The LG V35ThinQ features the improved AI CAM with 19 shooting modes to help users take better photos every time. Users will also find Portrait Mode to create bokeh shots with both the front and rear cameras, Live Photo to record a scene immediately before and after the shutter is pressed as well as Stickers for fun 2D or 3D overlay effects using face recognition.

Improving on the low light photography capability in the V30SThinQ, the V35ThinQ features the new Super Bright Camera to capture low light images that are approximately four times brighter. With the help of pixel binning and advanced software processing techniques, the AI algorithm determines the best settings when shooting in dim environments.

AI Features to Make Life Convenient

Following the LG G7ThinQ, the newest V series smartphone will also feature Google Lens in the camera app as well as from within Google Assistant and Google Photos. With Google Lens, users can get more information on objects such as landmarks, plants, animals and books by just pointing with the camera. Users can also visit websites, add a business card to contacts and add events to the calendar directly with the camera.

With Super Far Field Voice Recognition (SFFVR) technology, Google Assistant can be accessed by voice up to five meters away. SSFVR is capable of accurately understanding voice commands even over background noises such as a TV and traffic.

Immersive High Definition Audio

The Hi-Fi Quad DAC featured in the V35ThinQ delivers richer sound when paired with a pair of high-end headphones. And with DTS:X, listeners can enjoy virtual 3D surround sound up to 7.1 channel audio with any content while on the move.

“The LG V35ThinQ is part of our strategy that we announced early this year to introduce new iterations of existing products that improve on a proven and successful idea,” said Hwang Jeong-hwan, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With carefully considered updates that increase performance and convenience, the LG V35ThinQ is a great option for anyone looking for a complete and powerful multimedia smartphone.”

Additional details including price and purchase locations will be announced locally at the time of availability.

LG ROBOT VACUUM CLEANER NOT ONLY CLEANS, IT ALSO PROTECTS

A screenshot of footage recorded by LG HOM-BOT robot vacuum cleaner shows the moment a thief breaks into the user’s home.

On April 29, Kobi Ozer of Holon, Israel was working in his office when he received an alert on his smartphone from an unlikely source – his vacuum cleaner. When Ozer opened his LG SmartThinQ™ app, he realized that his HOM-BOT robot vacuum cleaner had sent him images of an intruder in his home. Ozer’s HOM-BOT included a Home-Guard feature which had detecting unusual movement when no one was supposed to be home, triggering the camera.

Another screenshot of footage recorded by LG HOM-BOT robot vacuum cleaner shows the moment a thief breaks into the user’s home.

LG HOM-BOT Wi-Fi is robot vacuum cleaner featuring remote control and motion detection that works along with SmartThinQ. With the intelligence of LG’s DeepThinQ™ AI platform, the robot vacuum uses its smart sensors to avoid colliding with furniture and “sees” the home with its camera to ensure that it covers every nook and cranny so no dust or crumb gets left behind.

An upper view of LG HOM-BOT Wi-Fi with LG’s DeepThinQ™ and Home-Guard capabilities

Home-View and Home-Guard are home security features built into the HOM-BOT to monitor and provide alerts in the event of a break-in or intrusion. Home-View allows homeowners to utilize the camera in the robot vacuum to view the interior of their homes remotely through their smartphones. Home-Guard complements Home-View by constantly monitoring movement in the home via its sensors and sending a series of five images to the SmartThinQ app when it detects unusual activity.

The image shows how to activate the Home-Guard feature on LG HOM-BOT settings.

Home security is growing in importance among consumers and a major reason homeowners are interested making their homes smarter. While LG HOM-BOT may only be a vacuum cleaner, it’s smart enough to know when something is wrong. Once alerted, Ozer called the police and his neighbor. The burglar likely fled after the HOM-BOT flashed its lights. Fortunately, nothing at home was missing or damaged thanks to his vacuum cleaner.

LG Electronics and Korean landscape architech Hwang Hay-joung are collaborating again at the Chelsea Flower Show, with LG Eco-City Garden featuring a variety of innovative, environmentally-friendly technologies alongside today’s state-of-the-art appliances. LG Eco-City Garden shows how consumers’ increased dependency on technology can coexist with the environmental issues posed by contemporary lifestyles, as well as help reduce pollution in areas of high population density. LG Eco-City Garden was named the show’s Silver Gilt medal winner for its unique and innovative approach of integrating technology and nature to address today’s urban environmental issues.

The Silver-gilt Medal awarded to LG Eco-City Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018

The annual Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show takes place this year from May on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. First held in 1913, the event is the world’s premier exposition for flower and landscape gardens, attracting visitors from the world over. In this year’s edition, LG’s Eco-City Garden will be one of ten show gardens filling the Main Avenue vying for an award.

This is LG’s second project collaboration with Hwang, the first being LG Smart Garden at the 2016 Chelsea Flower Show, also a Silver Gilt medal winner. This year, Hwang integrated LG’s Internet of Things (IoT) technology with a model of a modern apartment to demonstrate sustainable urban living. For example, Hwang incorporated LG’s intelligent air purifier system controlled by the SmartThinQ app on the G7 ThinQ smartphone into her design.

LG Smart Garden highlights self-sufficiency and efficiency through the use of renewable energy in the form of solar panels that power LED lighting to produce the perfect conditions for plants to grow. The home is designed with its own spacious terraces, accessed from the kitchen and designed to receive plenty of sunlight. Plants and trees not only soften the visual impact, they play a role in controlling the indoor climate and filtering the air, while running water helps modulate noise pollution.

The showcase demonstrates closer interaction between concrete, glass and the greener environment. The naturalistic planting scheme shows how to incorporate wildflowers, perennials and a looser meadow-style planting into a garden. The aquaponic urban farm system nourishes a vertical vegetable and herb farm with nutrients generated from fish waste.

The living space showcases a beautiful Signature Kitchen Suite featuring premium built-in appliances ranging from luxury refrigerator to sleek cooktop. Thanks to LG’s partnership with Boffi, the Italian manufacturer of high-end furniture, the suite features unique finishing touches on both worktops and doors, complementing the organic and luxurious package.

A relaxing, sitting area blends naturally into the garden, accompanied by the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV, the thinnest TV on the market today. This area incorporates advanced flooring and surfacing materials from sister company LG Hausys, with DECOTILE offering the distinctive look of wood and stone while HI-MACS® Acrylic Solid Surface brings the natural contemporary look, high performance, UV resistance and seamless finish to the exhibit. Updated with New Cameras, AI, Hi-Fi Audio, IP68 Rating and Fingerprint Sensor

The front and rear view of the LG Q7 in Aurora Black, Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet, side-by-side

SEOUL, May 21, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced the 2018 LG Q7, the newest Q series mid-range smartphone from LG that offers premium features typically found in more expensive flagship smartphones. Shipments to key markets in Europe will begin early next month, followed by countries in the Americas and Asia.

The LG Q6 that debuted in 2017 developed a fan base based on its intelligent balance of premium features and value, most notably for being the first in its class to offer a 5.5-inch FHD+ FullVision 18:9 aspect ratio display in a sleek, stylish, thin-bezeled body. The LG Q7 builds on that foundation with even more high-end features such as Portrait mode, QLens, Hi-Fi quality audio, DTS:X 3D Surround Sound, water and dust resistance and a fingerprint sensor on the back. The Q7 family consists of the Q7+, Q7 and Q7 α with the latter upgraded to 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM.

On the front, the LG Q7 features a 5MP camera with a 100-degree Super Wide Angle lens that captures more of the background or more friends. New to the LG Q7 is Portrait mode that allows users to take selfies with blurred backgrounds for a pleasing bokeh effect. With the LG Q7, shutterbugs won’t miss any shots with Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) on the rear camera, 23 percent faster than traditional auto focus.

LG also included QLens in the new Q7, a useful camera AI feature until now only available on LG’s premium smartphones. Leveraging AI technology for image recognition, QLens lets users use the camera to improve the image searching and online shopping experience. Capture any item with QLens and get information on where to buy the product online as well as recommendations of similar items. QLens can also perform an image search to see matching or similar images of food, clothing, celebrities or landmarks such as buildings and statues.

The LG Q7 is also the first in its price range to offer DTS:X to deliver virtual 3D surround sound, up to 7.1 channel audio through headphones for users to enjoy their favorite entertainment while on the move. Another first in its category, the LG Q7+ comes equipped with Hi-Fi Quad DAC for richer sounds without distortion when paired with high quality earphones.

The LG Q7 features a 2.5D Arc Glass design with rounded-edges that makes the device comfortable to hold and operate with one hand. The metallic body and rear metal frame of the Q7 is able to stand up to the rough and tumble of active use thanks to its IP68-certified water and dust resistance rating.

The LG Q7 has passed 14 of the MIL-STD 810G tests designed by the United States military to evaluate the performance of equipment in harsh environments. And Qualcomm’s Fast Charge technology can charge the Q7’s battery to 50 percent in about 30 minutes for added user convenience.

The addition of the Smart Rear Key fingerprint sensor complements the premium experience of the LG Q7. The rear fingerprint sensor located conveniently below the camera lens not only allows users to unlock the phone easily, it can also double as the camera shutter button, take screenshots and control the notification bar.

“Consumers in the market for a balanced smartphone with the latest premium features will find the LG Q7 very hard to resist,” said Ha Jeung-uk, senior vice president and business unit leader for LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With selected features just only recently introduced in our 2018 LG G7ThinQ, the Q7 is a great combination of features, design, performance and price.”

The LG Q7 will be available in three configurations of Q7, Q7+ and Q7α, depending on the region and market. Price and purchase details will be announced locally at the time of availability.

GLOBAL ROLLOUT OF LG G7 THINQ GETS UNDERWAY

LG’s Newest Premium Smartphone Delivers Brighter Display,

Superior Camera, Louder Audio and Useful AI Functions

The rear view of the LG G7 ThinQ in Raspberry Rose, New Aurora Black, New Platinum Gray and New Moroccan Blue, side-by-side

SEOUL, May 17, 2018 — The rollout of LG Electronics’ newest G7 smartphone kicks off this week in its home market of South Korea with key markets in Asia, the Americas and Europe to follow shortly thereafter. Officially announced just two weeks ago, the LG G7 ThinQ is LG’s first G series flagship phone with AI capabilities built-in, as well as a host of other new features designed for consumers looking for an all-around premium smartphone that will remain relevant and current for years to come.

Running Qualcomm’s fastest Snapdragon 845 mobile platform, the LG G7 features a Super Bright Display to deliver vivid colors and 1000nit brightness viewable even under the brightest lighting conditions. The 6.1-inch QHD+ (3120 x 1440) display with a 19.5:9 FullVision screen ratio is housed in a form factor that is perfectly designed for use with one hand.

The Boombox Speaker is sure to impress with a large resonance chamber that generates twice the bass of typical smartphones, even room-shaking audio when placed on a solid wood or metal surface. The inclusion of Hi-Fi Quad DAC, DTS:X and earphone jack make the LG G7 ThinQ the smartphone of choice for audio enthusiasts.

The new 8MP front and dual rear 16MP cameras significantly improve image quality while wide angle lenses on both the front and the rear fits even more people and scenery in the frame. Most notable is the AI CAM feature that automatically optimizes shots based on the subject matter and a Super Bright Camera that brightens dimly-lit objects by a magnitude of four without additional noise or grain. And the LG G7ThinQ is among the first smartphones in the market to offer Google Lens right out of the box. As demonstrated at the recent Google I/O conference, Google Lens adds powerful AI and computer vision functionalities, allowing users to see more information and perform useful tasks all from within the phone’s camera.

The LG G7 is an AI powerhouse in a smartphone package. The G7 is the first smartphone to offer a dedicated Google Assistant Key that provides quick and easy access to Google Lens and Google Assistant. Faster and less obtrusive in public than saying, “OK Google,” the Google Assistant Key provides a convenient way to get more things done with voice than ever before. And with Super Far Field Voice Recognition (SFFVR) that can recognize voice commands from up to five meters away, the G7 easily doubles as a home smart speaker, listening for and responding to requests from across the room.

“The LG G7 ThinQ is a smartphone of strong fundamentals but more significantly, its integrated and meaningful AI features take user conveniences to a whole new level,” said Ha Jeung-uk, senior vice president and business unit leader for LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We’re confident that once consumers experience the benefits of AI on a smartphone for themselves, they will immediately see the ways the LG G7ThinQ can improve their day-to-day activities.”

Prices and dates of availability will be announced locally.

Activation of the Google Assistant Drives LG’s Critically-Acclaimed 4K UHD TVs
Into the Connected Home Ecosystem with Cutting-Edge AI Services A promo shot for LG OLED TV AI ThinQ with a woman watching the TV’s display with the slogan, ‘Listen, Think, Answer.

SEOUL, May 8, 2018 — First announced at CES 2018, the Google Assistant is now available on LG’s 2018 AI TV lineup. This includes both LG OLED TVs and LG SUPER UHD TVs with ThinQ AI, which will deliver cutting-edge AI features operated directly through the TV’s remote control with no additional hardware required. The collaboration between Google and LG will add more convenience in consumers’ lives, and the synergistic effects from this technology partnership positively impacting LG’s award-winning TVs.

The Google Assistant combines with LG’s award-winning webOS based ThinQ AI to bring new levels of convenience and control to the consumer. This enables 2018 LG TVs to deliver an intuitive AI experience that uses natural language commands to control TV functions, seamlessly discover and play content, and control TV settings. With the Google Assistant, you can ask it to help manage daily tasks, access information, control compatible smart home devices including lighting, appliances and much more.

Beginning this year, LG and Google began collaborating to develop a wide range of features and are working on expanding consumer accessibility in multiple languages. By adding the Google Assistant to the webOS platform of LG’s 2018 AI TVs, the advanced machine learning and natural language processing technologies that Google is known for will simplify life for consumers worldwide. LG’s implementation reflects the importance the company places on creating and providing a more complete, accessible and diverse range of AI services.

LG’s 2018 AI TVs can perform hundreds of voice commands utilizing the company’s own open smart platform as well as the built in Google Assistant. With LG’s proprietary ThinQ AI users can immediately connect to external gaming consoles and soundbars (“Connect to soundbar”), they can switch picture mode (“Change to Cinema Mode”) or turn the TV off at set times.

Additionally, searching for content is even simpler and more convenient with LG TVs. LG AI-enabled TVs can instantly retrieve information or switch to a channel that offers the content requested by the viewer. “Switch to Discovery channel” instantly connects one to information about future travel destinations. Users can learn more about their desired films simply by saying a character’s or actor’s name, they can tell the TV to “Search for the soundtrack of this movie” or “Turn off the TV when this program is over” without needing to schedule a time.

With the Google Assistant built in, LG’s AI TVs offer users a streamlined experience that allows them to manage different tasks, find answers, or control smart home devices. Simply press and hold the mic button and ask for information such as the weather forecast (“What’s the weather this weekend?”), nearby local businesses, or check the score of the big game without disturbing the viewing experience. Users can relive their favorite moments by displaying memories from Google Photos. Services such as food delivery and transportation will also be easier with the addition of third-party Actions available in the near future.

With help from the Google Assistant, LG’s AI TVs can serve as the center of your smart home, offering access to devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, thermostats, air purifiers, smart lighting devices and many more. The Google Assistant works with more than 5,000 smart devices across hundreds of popular brands making it easier to control smart speakers and other devices connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

LG OLED TVs and LG SUPER UHD TVs with ThinQ AI and the Google Assistant will be available in the United States starting in May with key markets in Europe and Asia to follow.

“With the Google Assistant now available natively in 2018 LG AI TVs, I believe we’re going to see a whole new level of AI adoption in the home,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “LG’s unique partnership with Google allows us to be the first TV brand to offer the Google Assistant on our own OS which is a huge benefit for customers who are fans of webOS. With great partners like Google, we expect there to be many more exciting AI news to come from LG.”

LG’s 2018 AI TVs also work with existing Google Assistant devices such as Google Home and other smart speakers with the Assistant built in, allowing users to send voice commands directly from a separate Assistant device to their LG TV. TV owners can speak to other Assistant devices to control TV functions such as volume, play, pause, start, stop, fast forward, channel selection, content search, among many others. LG’s 2018 AI-enabled TVs will work with other Google Assistant devices in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia with further expansion to be announced later this year.

Stickers uses face recognition to generate fun 2D and 3D overlays such as sunglasses and headbands that can be viewed directly on the display.

New to the G series, Portrait mode generates professional looking shots with out-of-focus backgrounds. This bokeh effect can be generated using either the standard or Super Wide Angle lens, giving shutterbugs even more creative options.

Easier and Smarter With AI

LG G7 ThinQ will be one of the first devices to get upcoming Google Lens features. Google Lens is a new way to search using the latest in AI and computer vision. Available inside the Google Assistant and Google Photos, it can deliver more information on objects such as landmarks, plants, animals, books as well as identify text. Visit websites, add a business card to contacts, add events to the calendar or look up an item on a restaurant menu – all right from Google Lens. More details on Google Lens will be revealed at Google I/O.

Located just below the volume is a button that launches the phone’s AI functions. A single tap of this button will launch the Google Assistant while two quick taps will launch Google Lens, a first on any phone. Users can also hold down the button to start talking to the Google Assistant.

With Super Far Field Voice Recognition (SFFVR) and the smartphone’s highly sensitive microphone, the Google Assistant can recognize voice commands from up to five meters away. SFFVR is able to separate commands from background noise, making the LG G7 ThinQ a great alternative to a home AI speaker even when the TV is on. LG customer commands for the Google Assistant have been increased in the LG G7 ThinQ so users can get even more stuff done with their voice alone.

Super Bright Display Outshines the Competition

The first thing customers will notice about the LG G7 ThinQ will likely be the new 6.1-inch QHD+ (3120 x 1440) display sporting a 19.5:9 FullVision screen ratio and a bottom bezel which is almost 50 percent slimmer than on the LG G6. Powered by LG’s new LCD technology, Super Bright Display, the LG G7 ThinQ can be viewed easily even under direct sunlight with brightness up to an industry-leading 1,000 nit, displaying 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut.

And depending on the type of content, the display can be set to six different viewing modes: Auto, Eco, Cinema, Sports, Game and Expert. In Auto mode, the phone automatically analyzes the content of games or photos and optimizes the display and power consumption. The user can fine tune the image even further by adjusting the screen temperature and RGB levels individually.

The smartphone’s New Second Screen gives users flexible options when it comes to setting up the display to fit their tastes and style. The display can be fully expanded for a bezel-less look or it can be set to a more traditional style where the notification bar is completely blacked out. Users can even change the notification bar to another color for a more personal effect.

Unmatched Audio Experience in a Smartphone

Continuing LG’s commitment to deliver unrivaled audio experience on its smartphones, the LG G7 ThinQ offers premium audio innovations that remains unmatched in the industry. Available for the first time in the LG G7 ThinQ , Boombox Speaker utilizes the internal space of the LG G7 ThinQ as a resonance chamber to deliver double the bass of conventional smartphones for powerful “boombox” sound without the need for external speakers. When placed on a solid surface or box, the smartphone utilizes its resonance chamber as a woofer to amplify the bass effect even more.

The LG G7 ThinQ is also the first smartphone to offer DTS:X to deliver virtual 3D sound for all content, up to 7.1 channel audio with earphones. Carrying on the heritage of LG’s focus on great smartphone sound, the LG G7 ThinQ is equipped with a Hi-Fi Quad DAC for incredibly rich sound especially when paired with high-impedance earphones.

“The LG G7 ThinQ is strongly focused on the fundamentals and its launch marks a new chapter for our company,” said Hwang Jeong-hwan, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Through the combination of personalized and useful AI functionalities with meaningful smartphone features, this is LG’s most convenient smartphone yet.”

The LG G7 ThinQ will roll out in the coming days in South Korea followed by major markets in North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Price and purchase details will be announced locally closer to the time of availability.

LG Acquires Global Premium Automotive Lighting Company ZKW Group

EUR 1.1 Billion Deal Largest in LG’s 60 Year History

An aerial view of the premium automotive lighting company ZKW Group’s Headquarters.

SEOUL, Apr. 26, 2018 ― Earlier today, the Board of Directors of LG Electronics (LG) approved the acquisition of leading automotive lighting and headlight systems provider ZKW Group, capping a deal worth more than EUR 1.1 billion, LG’s largest acquisition to date. Under the terms of the transaction, LG Electronics will acquire a 70 percent stake in ZKW Group with parent company LG Corp. purchasing the remaining 30 percent.

The strategic merger is expected to result in synergies that allow the combined companies to lead the global lighting sector in autonomous vehicle components. Headquartered in the Lower Austrian town of Wieselburg, ZKW Group is a high-tech leader in automotive lighting systems with a presence in markets throughout Europe in addition to China, Mexico and the United States.

With revenues of EUR 1.26 billion in 2017 and an average annual sales growth rate of more than 20 percent over the past five years, ZKW products are found in many major European premium automotive brands including Audi, BMW, Porsche and Daimler, among others. ZKW’s offerings will complement LG’s growing Vehicle Components operations which expects the premium automotive lighting segment to expand faster than traditional auto lighting.

ZKW’s lighting business, which has focused on premium vehicle components and related accessories, will have a much greater market presence through LG’s extensive global sales network. As the industry transitions from traditional halogens to LEDs and lasers, ZKW sees itself in the enviable position of being only one of the first companies* worldwide that produces matrix LED headlamps and laser headlights. An industry innovator throughout its history, ZKW Group was an early investor in laser headlights. LG and ZKW will focus on developing intelligent lighting solutions that display high-resolution information and warnings on roads collected from sensors, including autonomous driving cameras and automotive communications

ZKW Group will continue to be managed by the current team led by CEO Oliver Schubert, who will be responsible for all operations around the world which includes more than 9,000 employees. LG is committed to maintaining ZKW’s autonomy and workplace culture. In particular, production in Austria will remain unchanged for at least five years.

“Through this deal, LG is adding a new growth opportunity to its automotive components business, a future growth opportunity with tremendous potential,” said Jo Seong-jin, chief executive officer of LG Electronics. “In addition to strengthening ZKW’s product development capabilities, LG’s global production experience and international business network will present unlimited opportunities for both companies in the auto market of tomorrow, which includes intelligent lighting solutions.”

LG’s Vehicle Components Company, which oversees the company’s automotive components business, recorded sales growth of 26 percent to USD 3.15 billion in 2017. The global automotive lighting market is expected to grow from USD 24.5 billion last year to USD 29 billion by 2020, with headlights contributing 70 percent of the total. Through this deal, LG is reinforcing its position as a leading player in automotive components and intends to expand the range of its automotive lighting business from rear lamps to related lighting products, such as headlights.

LG ANNOUNCES FIRST-QUARTER 2018 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Strong Home Appliance, Home Entertainment Results
Drive Highest First-Quarter Profitability Ever

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Apr. 26, 2018 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today posted consolidated sales of KRW 15.12 trillion (USD 14.1 billion) and operating profit of KRW 1.11 trillion (USD 1.03 billion) for the first quarter of 2018. Sales rose 3.2 percent from the first quarter last year and operating income soared by more than 20 percent, representing the highest first-quarter profit and revenue in company history and the highest quarterly profitability since the second quarter of 2009.

Both the LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company and the LG Home Entertainment Company reported their largest quarterly operating profit ever with each recording double-digit operation margins. This marks the first time in history that the combined profits of the company’s two largest business units exceeded KRW 1 trillion. At the same time, LG’s business-to-business operations also generated strong quarterly profitability, while losses from mobile communications and vehicle components narrowed in the quarter.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company posted revenues of KRW 4.92 trillion (USD 4.59 billion) and operating profit of KRW 553.1 billion (USD 515.51 million). Sales of products such as air conditioners and premium washing machines as well as new models of dryers, air purifiers and LG Styler units increased in the domestic Korean market while sales in Europe, Asia and Latin America together grew 9.3 percent from the same period in 2017. Operating profit rose 8.2 percent compared with the 2017 first quarter, thanks to higher sales of premium products and lower costs due to operating efficiencies. Demand is expected to increase in the second quarter as air conditioners and refrigerators enter the peak season in the northern hemisphere.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported sales of KRW 4.12 trillion (USD 3.84 billion) and operating profit of KRW 577.3 billion (USD 538.07 million). Revenue grew 7.4 percent compared to the same quarter last year as sales of premium products such as LG OLED TVs and SUPER UHD TVs remained strong. First-quarter operating profit increased 76.5 percent in 2018 versus 2017 due to the popularity of high-end TVs and improved cost structure, resulting in the company’s first-ever double digit quarterly operating margin of 14 percent. In the second quarter, LG expects the global TV market to benefit from upcoming global sports events.

The LG Mobile Communications Company recorded sales of KRW 2.16 trillion (USD 2.01 billion) and operating loss of KRW 136.1 billion (USD 126.85 million). Sales declined from the same quarter last year due to a revised smartphone launch strategy. Despite component price increases, the company shrank its operating deficit by continuing to improve its business structure. While the global smartphone market is forecast to experience stagnant growth and more intense competition in the second quarter, LG expects to see positive results with the launch of the LG G7 ThinQ flagship phone and the opening of the Software Upgrade Center to deliver higher-quality customer support.

The LG Vehicle Components Company posted revenues of KRW 840 billion (USD 782.9 million) and an operating loss of KRW 17 billion (USD 15.84 million). Sales of automotive infotainment products declined modestly by 1 percent from the first quarter 2017 due to slower vehicle sales. Still, with the increasing automotive industry focus on electric and autonomous vehicles in North America and Europe, the longer-term outlook for LG remains bright. The company will continue to strengthen its automotive components business through strategic partnerships with key clients as well as greater collaboration with other LG companies.

The LG Business-to-Business Company generated sales of KRW 642.7 billion (USD 599 million) and operating profit of KRW 78.8 billion (USD 73.45 million) in its debut quarter. First-quarter revenues grew 24 percent from last year, driven by higher sales of large screen digital signage displays and high performance solar modules. Operating profit jumped 192 percent from the same period 2017 due to the growing popularity of premium commercial products such as LG OLED digital signage displays and improved cost competitiveness, trends continuing into the second quarter.

Over 250 representatives from LG, its distribution/retail partners and members of the media from across the region are taking part in this year’s event, themed An Invitation to the AI Home That Thinks of You. Every LG InnoFest event includes products that are specific to each region, localized to suit consumer tastes in local market. InnoFest Asia is also the first opportunity to showcase LG’s new Innovation Gallery at LG Science Park to an international audience, since its official opening this year. At the LG ThinQ Zone inside the Innovation Gallery, a mock living room, kitchen, bedroom, laundry room and bathroom display a variety of products embedded with AI technology. Visitors can not only see how AI-enabled products can improve everyday life for families, but also experience firsthand the latest industrial robots being developed by LG for airports, hotels and premium supermarkets.

A female presenter explains about LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W that offers the weather forecast by voice recognition technology.

In the mock living room, users can experience the voice recognition feature of the AI-enabled LG OLED TV to control the volume, change channels and more. Voice control of home appliances is also possible through the LG V30S ThinQ phone and LG ThinQ speaker, both of which incorporate Google Assistant to handle tasks remotely from another part of the home.

A female presenter introduces LG ThinQ AI features that can control LG’s home appliances by using LG’s smartphones.

Guests can experience LG’s home appliances for clothing care such as the TWINWash washing machine, dryer and Styler working together to make managing one’s wardrobe a breeze. They can also call up recipes based on the ingredients inside the AI refrigerator without ever opening the door to see what’s inside. InnoFest participants can then see how LG’s smart ovens automatically adjust the cooking setting after receiving the recipe from the refrigerator.

Attendees at InnoFest 2019 browse LG’s CLOi Shopping Bot.

Taking intelligent appliances to a whole new level are LG’s three concept robot for serving food, transporting luggage and grocery shopping, on display in the LG CLOi Zone, named for LG’s robot brand. Still in development, these helper robots demonstrate the adaptability of robots in both the residential and commercial space. LG’s foray into commercial robots began with the Airport Guide Robots and Airport Cleaning Robots which were introduced to the public during a trial period at Incheon International Airport that started last July.

“LG InnoFest is the perfect opportunity to introduce our unique ThinQ AI-enabled products to our partners in key regions,” said Han Chang-hee, vice president of LG’s Global Marketing Center. “AI technology is fast becoming a part of our world but the realization of how fast this revolution is coming is still unrealized by many consumers. InnoFest allows us to bring our partners — who are engaging local customers on a daily basis — into the fold.”

Signature Kitchen Suite Pro Range Oven and LG CineBeam Laser 4K
Projector Recognized for Industry-Leading DesignsLogo of ‘reddot award 2018 best of the best’ with LG’s CineBeam 4K Lasers and SIGNATURE KITCHEN SUITE Pro range

SEOUL, Apr. 9, 2018 — LG Electronics received 21 honors at this year’s Red Dot Design Awards, one of the world’s top three design awards alongside iF Design Awards and IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards). Of the products recognized, two LG products shone the brightest with Best of the Best honors: the ultra premium built-in Signature Kitchen Suite Pro Range oven and the high-end LG CineBeam Laser 4K projector, which were judged among the best of 5,300 designs from 59 countries.

The design of the Signature Kitchen Suite Pro Range was recognized by the Red Dot judging committee for its ergonomic design details such as the control panel interface and comfortable handle. The oven evokes an era when cooking was a more central part of families’ lives and respected those preparing the meals. The first pro range on the market with built-in sous vide, induction and gas, the Wi-Fi enabled oven is powered by LG’s own SmartThinQ® Technology, a future-ready open platform that allows for convenient remote control operation with a free app available on both Android or iOS platforms.

LG’s other Best of the Best winner is one of the most unique home entertainment products on the market today. The LG CineBeam Laser 4K projector comes in a portable size and unique upright design that is only made possible by the mirrorless I-shaped engine which allows the projector to show perfect images whether it’s placed on the floor, mounted on the wall or hanging from the ceiling. The convenient carrying handle and Auto Cord feature makes the unit look absolutely sleek and clutter-free, prompting the judges to admire the product’s balance between esthetics and convenience and a “design unlike other projectors.”

LG received 19 other honors from Red Dot, which included many appliances such as the Signature Kitchen Suite Refrigerator, Code Zero R9 robot vacuum cleaner and air purifier. LG was also recognized for its home entertainment products, such as LG SIGNATURE OLED TV, industry-leading UltraWide monitors as well as its G6 and V30 flagship smartphones. More obscure but nevertheless eye-catching, LG’s Pra.L home skin care system and pastel-friendly Pocket Photo Printer were also included in the recognition.

“These honors reflect the wide recognition of LG’s distinctive competitiveness in design,” said Noh Chang-ho, head of corporate design at LG Electronics. “Our commitment is to continue focusing on the essence of LG products based on our in-depth understanding of customer demand.”
