BERLIN, Aug. 30, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) will be prioritizing its LG ThinQ brand at IFA 2018, spotlighting its innovations and vision at the prominent tradeshow in Berlin, August 31 to September 5. LG will be highlighting how its advanced LG ThinQ solutions are designed to make technology-powered radical lifestyle transformation a reality for users worldwide.

More than one-third of the company’s massive IFA exhibition space will be centered on AI, with a range of LG ThinQ products displayed in three different lifestyle zones: ThinQ Travel, ThinQ Gourmet and ThinQ Style. Each zone will be expertly designed to reflect the diverse lifestyles of modern consumers and will incorporate AI products into natural yet futuristic home environments. The distinct zones will illustrate how LG ThinQ presents benefits for every aspect of life in vital areas such as style, cuisine, home comfort, mobility and entertainment.

The Google Assistant will soon be available on all webOS-based LG AI TVs in seven new markets: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, South Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom. The platform, already successfully launched in the United States, also will now support up to five languages as part of LG’s global strategy to raise the bar for voice control solutions. With the Google Assistant built in, LG’s AI TVs will offer a streamlined experience that allows users to expertly manage daily tasks, find answers to important questions and control compatible smart home devices. IFA visitors can then move on to the IoT living room designed in collaboration with Italian luxury furniture company Natuzzi, a breathtaking living space that was featured at Milano Design Week. This welcoming zone highlights the control capabilities of XBOOM AI ThinQ speakers by illustrating how they can be used to alter the settings of connected sofas and lighting installations.

The intelligent InstaView ThinQ refrigerator takes center stage in the culinary-themed ThinQ Gourmet zone. Here, visitors can experience firsthand the advanced capabilities of the refrigerator to recommend recipes and instantly adjust cooking conditions for the connected oven and other kitchen appliances.

The ThinQ Style zone showcases LG’s wide variety of voice-controlled appliances, including the new LG Styler ThinQ. The latest Styler comes equipped with unique features designed to enhance user convenience while keeping clothes cleaner, more hygienic and stylish – all now achieved through voice commands. Many of the ground-breaking LG products in the three zones were recently recognized by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) for their advanced technology, design and innovation.

Across from the LG ThinQ lifestyle experience zones is the core tech zone, highlighting the innovative technology embedded in LG ThinQ products such as LG OLED TVs and LG SUPER UHD TVs as well as the LG Centum System. It is here that the 88-inch 8K OLED TV will be featured, with its 7,680 x 4,320-pixel resolution and ability to render deep blacks and vivid colors while also making wide viewing angles possible. Other core technologies unveiled for the first time in this zone include the revolutionary 173-inch Micro LED display, consisting of arrays of microscopic LEDs that form individual pixels. The screen will be located in a dramatic home cinema environment that highlights its ability to customize screen sizes according to user needs.

Also featured at IFA will be LG CLOi robots, ranging from serving robots to a wearable robot. This collection of advanced robots will be instrumental in fulfilling LG’s vision for AI both inside and outside the home. LG’s wearable CLOi SuitBot will be on display for the first time in this zone. Ideal for use in industries such as manufacturing and construction, the LG CLOi SuitBot will enhance the quality of life by improving mobility for its wearer.

Complementing the attention on LG ThinQ, visitors to the LG IFA booth will be greeted by the awe-inspiring LG OLED Canyon that delivers an immersive dive into awe-inspiring sights from across the world. Five beautiful landscapes – Columbia Icefield, Iguazu Falls, Antelope Canyon, Redwood National Park and Haleakalā – will be displayed in incredible detail across 258 convex and concave commercial open-frame LG OLED panels.

New LG SIGNATURE products showcased at IFA include the LG SIGNATURE wine cellar, bottom-freezer refrigerator and dryer – demonstrating the potential of premium appliances in the global market. To highlight the wine cellar’s aesthetic appeal and technological features, LG SIGNATURE will be hosting wine tastings with renowned wine critic James Suckling during the show. Befitting the elegant design of these products, LG is expanding its IFA partnership with London-based art collective Jason Bruges Studio to create a new LG SIGNATURE premium gallery under the theme, One Fine Day.

Targeting the European built-in appliance market, LG also will be debuting the new Signature Kitchen Suite luxury brand of built-in kitchen appliances at IFA. A separate exhibition space dedicated to the Signature Kitchen Suite will be located in a prominent outdoor garden at the center of Messe Berlin. Developed through a collaboration with European luxury furniture designers Valcucine and Arclinea, the Signature Kitchen Suite for Europe will deliver products that build on the tradition of innovative performance and fine craftsmanship.

IFA 2018 will open with a visionary keynote address from LG Electronics Chief Executive Officer Jo Seong-jin with President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. I.P. Park. LG CENTUM SYSTEM™ REFRIGERATOR RAISES THE BAR ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY AT IFA 2018

New Refrigerator Boasts Impressive Performance, Innovative Design
and Durability Backed by Long-term Warranty Little girl and her parents cutting fruit on the counter with LG Centum System™ bottom-freezer refrigerator in the background

BERLIN, Aug. 29, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) is set to break new ground again with the unveiling of its new bottom-freezer refrigerator at IFA 2018. The innovative bottom-freezer refrigerator stands out from the competition with market-leading energy efficiency as well as durability and an array of convenience-enhancing features. The refrigerator is also the first in the industry to come with a 20-year warranty for its internal compressor. With Centum System technology inside, it is the natural choice for consumers looking for an advanced efficient refrigerator that will stand the test of time.

These benefits are achieved by integrating several advanced technologies to form dynamic customer-oriented solutions. The refrigerator’s powerhouse is the LG Inverter Linear Compressor which is 32 percent more energy efficient than conventional compressors. * This and a range of other efficient features combine to cut the bottom-freezer refrigerator power consumption and give an energy rating of A+++-40 percent, far superior to the competition. This means that the refrigerator uses 40 percent less power than models with an A+++  energy rating and will make it easier than ever to save on electric bills.

The advanced Inverter Linear Compressor also significantly boosts reliability and durability. Rigorous product testing found that LG’s Inverter Linear Compressor-equipped Centum System refrigerator was subject to notably less wear and tear from daily use while also producing up to 25 percent less noise. * This same research also placed that the average lifespan of the refrigerator’s core technology at roughly 20 years, far exceeding the competition.

Internally, the new Centum System bottom-freezer refrigerator is also equipped with a range of freshness-enhancing features that put LG’s user-oriented philosophy into practice. Linear Cooling™ keeps temperature fluctuation within ±0.5˚C while Fresh Balancer and Fresh Converter give users simplified control over the humidity and temperature to create ideal conditions for each food type. In addition, DoorCooling+™ circulates cold air from the top of the machine to ensure uniform temperatures even in hard-to-reach areas like the front door basket. With elegant design cues befitting its advanced internal technology, Centum System bottom-freezer refrigerator boasts stunning matte black and stainless steel finishing. The seamless metal touch display on the front and full metal designed interior complete the design by adding a subtle touch of unique elegance.

“LG has long worked to develop a bottom-freezer refrigerator that set new standards in not just energy savings and durability but also design and the new Centum System bottom-freezer refrigerator represents the culmination of these efforts,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics and Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “Our premium Centum System bottom-freezer will help cement LG’s long-standing leadership in the global premium refrigerator market.”

Visitors to LG’s IFA booth in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin from August 31 to September 5 will have a chance to see the new bottom-freezer refrigerator and other home innovations for themselves.

LG INTRODUCES WORLD’S FIRST 8K OLED TV AT IFA

First To Mass Produce Large Screen OLED TVs,
LG Poised to Lead Market in Advanced Premium TV Technologies Two models look in awe at the world’s first LG 8K OLED TV displayed at IFA 2018.

BERLIN, Aug. 29, 2018 — Already a leader in advancing TV innovation with its OLED TVs, LG Electronics (LG) is introducing the world’s first 8K (7,680 x 4,320) OLED TV at IFA 2018. The 88-inch 8K LG OLED TV features over 33 million self-emitting pixels to produce the unmatched contrast ratio and true blacks that define OLED TV’s iconic picture quality.

With OLED TV shipments in the market expected to double in 2018 and reach over nine million units by 2022, LG will continue to increase the OLED share in its premium TV portfolio and drive large scale consumer adoption of OLED TVs. While the 8K TV market is still in its infancy, it is expected to grow to more than 5 million units by 2022 and LG is committed to leading the ultra-premium market with its 8K OLED TV technology.

Despite advancements in LCD field, OLED has been often referred to as the “next-generation display technology” because it emits its own light, eliminating the need for any kind of backlighting. This allows for state-of-art TVs which redefine both the picture quality and the product design. Not only was LG able to pioneer such technologies, but it was also able to successfully market them.

“LG’s first 8K OLED TV is the pinnacle of technological achievement and the next evolutionary step in display technology” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “4K OLED played a major role in reshaping TV industry and LG is confident that 8K OLED will do the same.”

Visitors can take a first look at the 88-inch 8K LG OLED TV at IFA 2018, along with other innovations in TV technologies in the LG booth in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin.

LG BUILDS ON SUCCESSFUL G7 SERIES PLATFORM WITH TWO EVEN MORE ACCESSIBLE MODELS

LG G7 One and LG G7 Fit Offer Flagship-Level
Intelligent Features at Exceptional Price PointsThe front and rear view of the LG G7 Fit in New Aurora Black

SEOUL, Aug. 28, 2018 — At IFA 2018, LG Electronics (LG) will be introducing two exciting additions to the G7 series of smartphones with the LG G7 One and LG G7 Fit. Building on the foundation of the advanced LG G7 ThinQ, both of the new phones offer a balance of premium features and exceptional prices for discerning customers.

Many consumers today are turning their attention to legacy flagship smartphones which are seen as offering better values compared to the newest mid-range models. These customers aren’t satisfied with mediocre components but also don’t want to pay for over-the-top features in some of today’s premium phones that they will never use. The challenge is finding the smartphone with just the right balance.

LG G7 One

The LG G7 One is the first Android One smartphone from LG that brings together the best of the company’s smartphone experience and expertise with Google’s latest smartphone OS innovations. Designed to be one of the most versatile Android One smartphones on the market today, the LG G7 One sports the proven Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It has the same all-glass design aesthetic of the LG G7 ThinQ with a polished metal rim for a sleek and slim appearance that is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance. The 6.1-inch QHD+ (3120 x 1440) Super Bright Display sporting a 19.5:9 FullVision screen ratio and thin bottom bezel completes the premium style that savvy consumers are looking for.

The LG G7 One runs Android 8.1 Oreo and includes only the most essential apps out of the box, providing users with a smooth and fast smartphone experience. The phone automatically optimizes background activity for the most important operations to maximize battery life. Users can conveniently access the rich AI experience of the Google Assistant by tapping the dedicated button on the side of the phone. LG’s first Android One phone will receive regular security updates with built-in Google Play Protect for total peace of mind.

Also available on the LG G7 One is Google Lens, Google’s new way to search using computer vision and AI technology. Available from inside the Google Assistant and Google Photos, users can search for information about objects, identify text, visit websites, include business cards in contacts, add new events to the calendar or look up an item on a restaurant menu without any typing.

More consumers are using smartphones as primary devices to enjoy music and movies. The LG G7 One is the perfect companion device for unwinding and relaxing with its 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC for superb sound when paired with quality earphones. The LG G7 One also delivers virtual 3D sound for all content, up to 7.1 channel audio with DTS:X.

For those who prefer to listen to music without earphones, the LG G7 One also features the unique Boombox Speaker which utilizes the internal space of the phone as a resonance chamber to deliver double the bass and audio of conventional smartphones. When placed on a solid surface or box, the resonance chamber acts as a woofer to amplify the bass effect even more. AI CAM, first introduced in the LG V30S, will be added with an update later this year.

LG G7 Fit

LG G7 Fit was designed to bridge the gap between mid-range and flagship models, delivering exceptional value and performance as well as key features and innovations introduced in the LG G7 ThinQ. Featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 coupled with 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, the LG G7 Fit comes with the stunning 6.1-inch LCD FullVision display with QHD+ (3120 x 1440) resolution powered by LG’s exclusive Super Bright Display LCD to delivery an industry-leading 1,000 nits of brightness.

Like the LG G7 ThinQ, the LG G7 Fit offers premium and intelligent features such as AI CAM, 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, Boombox Speaker and DTS:X 3D Surround Sound. AI CAM lets users choose from eight shooting categories – person, food, pet, landscape, city, flower, sunrise and sunset – for perfectly optimized shots along with three effects options for even more personalization.

“Both the LG G7 One and the LG G7 Fit are designed to allow a broader range of consumers enjoy LG smartphones with proven and flagship-level features,” said Ha Jeung-uk, senior vice president and business unit leader for LG’s Mobile Communications Company. “As the smartphone ecosystem matures, it’s not enough to just offer premium and mid-range phones, there is a growing demand for models in between.”

Visitors to IFA 2018 from August 31 to September 5 can visit LG’s booth in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin to experience and get more information on the LG G7 One and LG G7 Fit. Pricing and other purchase details will be announced locally at the time of availability.

Powerful Monitors Deliver Superb Picture and Fast Processing
to Transform the Gaming Experience A right-side and rear view of LG UltraGear Gaming Monitor.

BERLIN, Aug. 28, 2018 — LG Electronics is demonstrating its commitment to gaming technology with the announcement of its new UltraGear™ monitors at IFA 2018 in Berlin this week. The monitors take immersion to a new level thanks to their powerful performance, superb picture quality and speedy refresh rate. These factors combine with the UltraWide™ 21:9 screen and stylish design to create an immersive playing field that enhances the gaming experience.

LG has long been recognized for its monitors, including the best-in-class picture of the LG UltraFine™ and the productivity-enhancing properties of the LG UltraWide™ 21: 9 monitor. UltraGear is the name of LG’s new gaming monitors that deliver the ultimate in high-performance entertainment. With their optimal picture quality and lightning-fast processing speed, these monitors are ideal for all genres of games. The LG UltraGear lineup gives gamers the edge to play at their highest level and in gaming that could mean the difference between winning and respawning.

The flagship UltraGear model 34GK950G boasts the most powerful features in the lineup with unprecedented picture quality thanks to the Nano IPS display technology that covers 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. The same display also accurately recreates colors across over 135 percent of the sRGB color space. With NVIDIA G-SyncTM graphic processing technology built-in, the UltraGear 34GK950G provides smooth motion without tearing or stuttering. What’s more, its high refresh rate of 120Hz (overclocked) means that objects are rendered more clearly for smoother gameplay and seamless visual fluidity.

The wide ratio of the UltraGear 34GK950G makes it easier to see details off to the side that might normally be missed while its ultra-thin bezels makes it easier to connect multiple monitors for an even more immersive experience. And gamers can create their own unique ambiance with Sphere Lighting that boasts six color settings to complement any game or movie.

“LG’s monitors have been setting standards in the industry for many years and LG UltraGear will be no exception,” said Jang Ik-hwan, head of LG’s IT Business Division. “Announcing our UltraGear monitors at Europe’s largest industry event is demonstration of our confidence and excitement about this new brand.”

LG EXPANDS ULTRA-PREMIUM LINEUP WITH NEW PRODUCTS HIGHLIGHTED BY WINE CELLAR

Joined by Premium Dryer and Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator
in LG SIGNATURE’s First Expansion Since 2016 Launch A front image of the LG SIGNATURE ultra-premium product lineup.

BERLIN, Aug. 27, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) will unveil an expanded LG SIGNATURE ultra-premium product lineup at IFA 2018 in Berlin, highlighted by a new wine cellar, dryer and bottom-freezer refrigerator.

The concept, The Art of Essence, was the inspiration behind the philosophy of the LG SIGNATURE brand, which launched in 2016. LG SIGNATURE products were stripped of all features that detracted from the brand’s spirit, resulting in the streamlined look that exemplifies products of the finest quality that deliver a sense of exclusivity to its owners.

The exclusive LG SIGNATURE wine cellar is capable of storing 65 bottles within its sleek metal frame and features numerous innovative technologies such as Multi Temperature Control which creates the ideal storage conditions for different types of wine. The drawer refrigerator in the wine cellar with Automatic Lift allows for easy access to the wine inside with the press of a button. Use voice recognition to open the door or turn on the interior light to see what’s inside through the darkened glass, saving energy and avoiding unnecessary exposure to sunlight.

A high-end clothes dryer will be joining LG SIGNATURE for the first time this year. The 10kg dryer can detect the amount of laundry inside the drum and adjust setting to match, with no input from the user. A rapid drying feature is complemented by the advanced Condenser Automatic Cleansing System which uses streaming water to clear away lint build up, allowing the dryer to operate consistently at peak efficiency.

The new LG SIGNATURE bottom-freezer refrigerator boasts an array of advanced features including Automatic Lift to raise the drawer to eye level for easier access to the contents. The improved Auto Door Open feature senses when a person approaches and automatically opens the door twice as wide as before, a real convenience when one’s arms are full of groceries.

To highlight the wine cellar’s aesthetics and advanced technology, LG SIGNATURE partnered with James Suckling, a prominent figure in the international wine community whose reviews are widely read and respected. Mr. Suckling will host several wine tasting sessions for VIP guests at the LG SIGNATURE booth in Messe Berlin on August 30 and 31, highlighting the wine cellar’s ability to preserve or improve a wine’s flavor. French winery Lou Dumont will also be on hand to serve visitors a sampling of its best vintage.

“Combining beautiful design with the latest technologies while staying true to a product’s essence is what LG SIGNATURE is all about,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG’s Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “Expanding our LG SIGNATURE collection to seven products allows even more consumers to experience the joy of owning a home appliance that resembles a work of art.”

Visitors to LG’s booth in Hall 18 during IFA will be able to see the latest additions to the LG SIGNATURE lineup for themselves.

LG TVS WITH AI THINQ® IN MORE MARKETS TO GET THE GOOGLE ASSISTANT

LG TV Customers to Benefit From More Languages and Smart Home Connectivity

A front view of LG OLED TV showing Google Maps.

SEOUL, Aug. 24, 2018 — Even more LG Electronics (LG) TV customers will be able to use the Google Assistant on their 2018 TVs with AI ThinQ in the fourth quarter. LG will be introducing the Google Assistant in seven more markets – Australia, Canada, France, Germany, South Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom – with support in up to five languages. This expansion is part of LG’s global strategy to raise the bar for voice recognition solutions enabled with LG’s ThinQ platform and the Google Assistant built in. LG first announced that the Google Assistant would be built into its TVs at CES 2018 with the service debuting in the United States in the second quarter.

The Google Assistant will be available on all of LG’s webOS-based AI TVs in the new markets, offering a wide range of features and boosted accessibility in multiple languages. With the Google Assistant built in, LG’s 2018 AI ThinQ-enabled TVs offer a streamlined experience that allows users to manage daily tasks, find answers or control compatible smart home devices. Simply press and hold the mic button and ask for information, such as the weather forecast, a nearby restaurant’s hours, the latest sports scores or to dim the lights without interrupting the viewing experience. Users can also relive their favorite moments by displaying pictures from Google Photos.

With help from the Google Assistant, LG’s AI TVs can serve as the center of the smart home, offering access to numerous devices such as robot vacuum cleaners, thermostats, air purifiers and smart lighting. The Google Assistant is compatible with more than 5,000 smart devices across hundreds of popular brands, making it easier to control speakers and other smart home devices connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Customers in English-speaking markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada can already connect Google Home devices to LG AI-enabled TVs to send voice commands directly from their smart speakers. This feature will become available to customers in France, Germany, Japan and South Korea by the end of 2018. Compatibility with Amazon Alexa-enabled devices – currently available in the U.K. and the U.S. – will be expanded to Australia and Canada as well.

On top of the Google Assistant integration, LG’s AI TVs use LG’s exclusive deep learning technology which allows viewers to use natural language to quickly and easily connect such TVs to external devices or search for specific information or content simply by issuing a verbal request. Switching TV stations, turning the volume up or down, turning off when a show is over, reminding you when a favorite show is about to air or finding the best content to watch – whether through cable, over-the-air or streaming service – are just a few ways ThinQ helps viewers enjoy their daily watching experience.

“LG’s vision is to become a major name in all things AI based on our philosophy of open platform, open partnership and open connectivity,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “Beyond the unrivaled picture quality that LG’s premium TVs deliver, the Google Assistant offers even more consumers a new level of intelligence in the home, aligned with LG’s mission to improve the daily lives of its customers through forward-thinking technology.”

Visitors to IFA are encouraged to stop by LG’s booth in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin for a hands-on demonstration of LG’s AI ThinQ-enabled TVs with the Google Assistant while experiencing the best in OLED technology such as the immersive OLED Canyon.

LG TO USHER IN NEW ERA OF AI ROBOTICS WITH WEARABLE ROBOT

CLOi SuitBot, LG’s First Human-centric Robot Designed for Industry and Healthcare Man wearing LG CLOi SuitBot to move a box to the LG Shopping Cart Robot in a LG warehouse

SEOUL, Aug. 23, 2018 — Focused on becoming a leading developer of service robots in the next decade, LG Electronics (LG) will unveil to the public at IFA 2018 its first “human-centric” wearable robot. But unlike previously announced robots from LG such as Guide Robot, Cleaning Robot and Serving Robot, the LG CLOi SuitBot doesn’t navigate airport lounges and hotel hallways by itself. What it does is support and enhance a user’s legs to allow for more mobility and lower limb strength.

Last year LG invested in a startup that develops robots to overcome the limitations of the human body in everyday life. LG CLOi SuitBot was designed in collaboration with the startup, SG ROBOTICS, who has been studying how wearable robots can improve the quality of life. A comfortable fit and naturally rotating joints allow the CLOi SuitBot to move in a more relaxed and natural way to enhance the lower body while walking, standing or working. Its sandal-type shoes and automatic adjustment feature allow the wearer to get in and out of the suit more easily, differentiating LG CLOi SuitBot from many other exoskeletons.

And LG CLOi SuitBot can connect to other LG service robots (first announced at CES 2018) to become part of a smart working network to deliver information and tools required at work sites such as manufacturing, logistics and distribution. LG CLOi service robots are being developed as part of LG’s larger AI initiative for the commercial sector. AI technology allows LG CLOi SuitBot to learn and evolve through the recognition and analysis of biometric and environment data, measuring and analyzing movements to suggest proper movements and stances for power efficiency.

“LG CLOi SuitBot is evidence of our full commitment to expanding our portfolio of service robots that deliver tangible convenience and innovation in our lives,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG’s Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “It’s just one example of a wide range of revolutionary AI products designed to interact with users to dramatically elevate user convenience and create new opportunities to advance our robotics initiative into a next-gen growth engine.”

Visitors to LG’s booth in Hall 18 at IFA in Berlin from August 31 to September 5 will be able to experience LG’s exciting robot lineup for themselves.

Smart Wi-Fi connectivity ensures that Signature Kitchen Suite appliances are fully compatible with AI platforms such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Smart connectivity allows users the power to get more done remotely, such as: searching for recipes using apps such as Innit, SideChef and Drop; sending recipes directly to the oven; preheating the oven from afar, setting the right cooking mode as well as monitoring all operations in the kitchen.

“We are excited about bringing our Signature Kitchen Suite premium home appliances to the very discerning European market this year,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “We’re confident that the combination of our proven smart technology and our high-end appliances will give established European brands in this category a run for the money.”

EISA Recognizes LG’s Artificial Intelligence and Product Innovation LG’s AI ThinQ-enabled products including OLED TV, LG SUPER UHD TV, LG XBOOM and LG Soundbar above four EISA AWARD logos.

SEOUL, Aug. 15, 2018 — LG Electronics’ (LG) innovations in AI technology and design have earned the company recognition from the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). LG’s AI ThinQ-enabled products including LG OLED TV, LG SUPER UHD TV and LG XBOOM were honored for their high competitiveness in categories assessing premium picture quality, artificial intelligence performance and sound excellence.

The LG OLED TV AI ThinQ (model OLED65E8) was named the EISA PREMIUM OLED TV 2018-2019, marking this the seventh consecutive win for the company’s OLED technology. The TV was praised for its picture quality powered by the α (Alpha) 9 processor, which provides true-to-life images with incredibly rich colors, sharpness and depth for more realism and its class-leading artificial intelligence functionality. The EISA jury also praised the Dolby Atmos™ performance and its front firing speakers which produce the most immersive audio-visual experience possible. The picture-on-glass design was also cited for perfectly blending into any environment.

In addition, the LG SUPER UHD TV AI ThinQ (model 65SK9500) was recognized as the EISA ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TV 2018-2019 for producing the ultimate LCD TV picture through the combination of technologies including Nano Cell, Full-Array Local Dimming (FALD) and the α (Alpha) 7 processor, as well as LG’s AI ThinQ platform and Google Assistant built in. Thanks to the innovative Nano Cell Display, TV viewers can enjoy superb color accuracy and consistency at wide viewing angles without compromising picture quality.

EISA also named LG’s premium AI speaker, the LG XBOOM AI ThinQ (model WK7), as its EISA ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE LOUDSPEAKER 2018-2019 thanks to extraordinary sound quality combined with intelligence. The LG XBOOM AI ThinQ’s High Resolution Audio is compatible with high quality lossless files, allowing it to faithfully recreate sounds originally recorded in the studio.

With Google Assistant integrated directly into the device for quick setup, LG XBOOM AI ThinQ responds to a user’s commands without the need for a remote control or smartphone like “Hey Google, what’s my schedule today?” As a hub, the speaker can control Google Assistant-enabled smart home devices as well as LG home appliances compatible with LG ThinQ.

The winner of the EISA SOUNDBAR 2018-2019 award, model LG SK10Y, is an immersive soundbar with 550W of powerful output and 5.1.2 channel support by harnessing the power of Dolby Atmos® to produce an immersive sound from all directions, including the ceiling. This high resolution soundbar is aesthetically designed to fit under LG premium TVs. Moreover, the soundbar is compatible with other smart devices that support Chromecast and can stream songs or podcasts simply with the words, “OK Google”.

“LG is proud to be recognized by such renowned industry experts for its commitment to innovation in AI technologies,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “LG has been and continues to be a key global player in AI, offering customers a new level of intelligence at home, aligned with our mission to make their lives more convenient through the implementation of forward-thinking technology.”

LG SET TO DEFINE FUTURE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AT NEW NORTH AMERICAN AI RESEARCH LABS

LG Labs to Drive Evolution of Advanced
AI Technologies Across Multiple Touchpoints

LG Electronics’ president and chief technology officer, Dr. I.P. Park, shake hands with University of Toronto president, Meric Gertler.

SEOUL, Aug. 1, 2018 – Global innovator LG Electronics Inc. (LG) is poised to define the future of artificial intelligence (AI) for consumers and businesses in the years ahead with the establishment of a major new AI research presence in North America in collaboration with leaders in academia and start-ups.

This week marks the launch of the new LG Electronics AI Research Lab in Canada, an extension of the newly expanded LG Silicon Valley AI Lab in Santa Clara, California. Supporting LG’s vision of AI as a key future growth engine, the North American labs further enhance LG’s global research capabilities, which include AI labs in South Korea, India and Russia.

In addition, LG is entering into a new research partnership with the University of Toronto, which is recognized worldwide for its AI and machine learning expertise, particularly in the area of deep learning.

“AI will ultimately touch everybody’s lives, transforming the way we live, work and play,” said LG Electronics President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. I.P. Park. “Early implementations of AI in connected devices today are setting the stage for tomorrow’s smart cities, smart homes, smart businesses and smart devices, all with capabilities that no one has even dreamed of yet.” He said the North American labs and LG’s research partnership with the University of Toronto will play a key role in developing source technologies defining that future.

Under its five-year, multi-million-dollar research partnership with the University of Toronto, LG will build on its Open Platform-Open Partnership-Open Connectivity strategy to expand the AI ecosystem. The new lab will capitalize on the expertise of researchers at the University of Toronto who will now have the opportunity to work collaboratively with LG’s growing U.S. and Canadian AI R&D teams. Complementing this work, LG intends to collaborate with and invest in North American start-ups.

University of Toronto President Meric Gertler views LG as an exciting new partner for AI research. “The University of Toronto looks forward to partnering with an innovative global company like LG as our researchers continue to advance the boundaries of artifi-cial intelligence. The presence of such leading, multi-national firms in our innovation ecosystem strengthens opportunities for our faculty, students and start-up companies across a whole range of disciplines.”

Echoing President Gertler’s views, Dr. Park said, “AI solutions based on deep learning will revolutionize how we interact with the world around us, in new seamless ways that use contextual data from things like biometrics, emotions, gestures and of course voice.” He went on to explain the three main pillars of LG’s AI strategy:

“The first is the ability to evolve with time, so the more you use our products, the better they evolve to meet your specific needs. The second is the ability to integrate AI into diverse touchpoints – to have a seamless, consistent user experience across the entire LG product portfolio, from connected appliances and TVs to connected cars and smartphones. The third is openness; our strategy is to provide the best AI experience for LG customers, leveraging the complementary capabilities of leading partners across the ecosystem,” Dr. Park explained.

LG ANNOUNCES SECOND-QUARTER, FIRST-HALF 2018 FINANCIAL RESULTS

First-Half Sets Multiple Records: Highest Global Revenues,
Highest Operating Profits and First Time Sales Exceed 30 Trillion Won

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, July 26, 2018 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) reported consolidated global sales of KRW 15.02 trillion (USD 13.9 billion) and operating profits of KRW 771 billion (USD 715.1 million) for the second quarter of 2018. Second-quarter sales rose 3.2 percent while operating profits increased 16.1 percent from the same period last year. Strong profitability from home appliances and air solutions and premium home entertainment products offset second-quarter operating losses from vehicle components and mobile communications.

First-half 2018 sales and operating profits were at all-time record highs. Revenues increased 3.2 percent from the 2017 first half to KRW 30.14 trillion (USD 28 billion) and operating income rose 18.5 percent to KRW 1.88 trillion (USD 1.7 billion). In light of uncertainties surrounding market conditions, competition and the international trade landscape going forward, LG enters the second half with an intense focus on cost competitiveness and profitable growth.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company posted strong second-quarter 2018 sales of KRW 5.26 trillion (USD 4.88 billion) and operating profits of KRW 457.2 billion (USD 424.04 million). Quarterly revenues grew 4.3 percent from last year, in part due to strong seasonal sales of air conditioners, and increased shipments of the LG Styler garment care system and air purifiers, especially in the domestic Korean market. Quarterly operating income increased 1.7 percent compared to the same period of 2017, driven by cost management and sales of premium clothes washers and refrigerators, offsetting the effects of higher raw material prices and unfavorable exchange rates. First half revenues for LG Home Appliances and Air Solutions were the highest in company history, exceeding 10 trillion (USD 9.47 billion) for the first time.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported second-quarter sales of KRW 3.82 trillion (USD 3.54 billion) and operating profit of KRW 407 billion (USD 377.48 million). Revenues increased 4.1 percent from the 2017 quarter due to healthy sales of LG OLED TVs, LG SUPER UHD TVs and other premium products. Operating income increased 44.1 percent from the second quarter last year, repeating Home Entertainment’s double-digit operating profit margin performance from the 2018 first quarter. In the second half, while the global TV market is expected to see weaker demand primarily due to the economic downturn in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, the company plans to maintain its solid profit strategy by expanding sales of premium products and further enhancing cost competitiveness.

The LG Mobile Communications Company recorded sales of KRW 2.07 trillion (USD 1.92 billion) and an operating loss of KRW 185.4 billion (USD 171.95 million). Quarterly sales declined from last year due to the slowing growth of the global smartphone market and a decline in mid- to low-end smartphone sales in Latin America. The second-quarter operating loss was largely due to contracting sales and increased marketing investments to support new flagship smartphone launches. With competition in the premium smartphone category expected to intensify and growth to remain stagnant in the second half, the company will seek to further improve its business structure and increase sales of the new premium LG G7 ThinQ and LG V35 ThinQ flagship smartphones in key markets around the world.

The LG Vehicle Components Company posted sales of KRW 872.8 billion (USD 809.5 million) and an operating loss of KRW 32.5 billion (USD 30.14 million). Sales increased 3.9 percent from the second quarter last year as mass production on new projects commenced. The quarterly operating loss reflects increases in raw material prices such as memory and additional resource requirements for new projects. Uncertainties in the global auto industry and in U.S. trade policy will continue to challenge the business unit over the course of the year, although the expected growth of connected and electric vehicles is promising for LG Vehicle Components in the longer term.

The LG Business-to-Business Company reported sales in the second quarter of KRW 588.5 billion (USD 545.82 million) and operating profit of KRW 39 billion (USD 36.17 million). Revenues grew 10.7 percent from the second quarter last year, thanks to stronger sales of large-scale digital signage products and high-efficiency solar modules. Operating profit soared 73.3 percent from the 2017 period on increased sales of premium products and improved cost competitiveness. In the second half, demand for premium digital signage is expected to continue to increase, while the solar module business will likely face increased competition and market challenges due to the ever-changing international trade environment.

2018 2Q Exchange Rates Explained

LG Electronics’ unaudited quarterly earnings results are based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period ending June 30, 2018. Amounts in Korean won (KRW) are translated into U.S. dollars (USD) at the average rate of the three-month period of the corresponding quarter — KRW 1,078.20 per USD.
