IMPROVING CUSTOMER TRUST AND ENHANCING CORE TECHNOLOGIES KEY TO LG’S MOBILE STRATEGY

Premium Interim Smartphones Such as LG V30S ThinQ to Bolster Product Lineup

LG Mobile Communications Company president Hwang Jeong-hwan

BARCELONA, Feb. 27, 2018 — At Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the new head of LG Electronics’ mobile business, spoke about the importance of meeting consumers’ real needs by improving trust in the LG brand and focusing on core technologies. High-end interim products based on successful premium devices such as V30S ThinQ will play an important role toward that goal, according to LG Mobile Communications Company president Hwang Jeong-hwan.

“The majority smartphone customers today desire a great user experience that thoughtfully reflects how they work and play,” said Mr. Hwang. “LG customers expect our phones to excel in four core technologies which we call the ‘ABCD’ of killer features – audio, battery, camera and display. We will prioritize these features not only in our new flagship products but also in our interim products starting with the LG V30S ThinQ which we are showing here in Barcelona.”

Leveraging its proven and well-received smartphone platforms with incremental software and aesthetic upgrades will deliver a longer and more satisfying ownership experience for existing customers. Thoughtful features and unique color options that make LG devices stand out from the competition will attract consideration from new customers while enhanced product build quality and after-sales service like the continuous AI suite updates will give consumers even more reason to consider LG when shopping for a new smartphone.

Great audio, one of the most frequently overlooked features in high-end smartphones, is one of the key reasons consumers choose LG phones. LG’s advanced Hi-Fi Quad DAC technology will continue to be enhanced and developed in future devices and developing better battery technologies in partnership with industry leader LG Chem will be a top priority. LG smartphone cameras will not only lead the industry in innovation with better lenses and improved low light performance, they will get smarter with the addition of artificial intelligence to take much of the guesswork out of capturing that perfect shot. And already a world-leader in consumer electronics displays, both LCD and OLED technologies will see significant investments in R&D.

“The smartphone market has evolved significantly over the past decade and the challenge now is to define our path forward for the next decade,” Mr. Hwang said. “There are very few companies with the depth of experience and diversity of product knowledge as LG. We have every intention of growing our mobile footprint and thriving in this environment with our AI capabilities leading the way.”

LG V30S THINQ WITH NEW INTEGRATED AI DEBUTS AT MWC 2018

Upgraded with AI Features, LG’s Newest Smartphone
Brings Ease and Convenience to the Mobile Experience

BARCELONA, Feb. 25, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) is debuting its first ThinQ mobile device this week at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. Building on the foundation of the LG V30 platform, the LG V30S ThinQ integrates new AI technologies into the most commonly used features that are closely aligned to the needs and usage behavior of consumers today. ThinQ was introduced at CES 2018 to identify all of LG’s home appliances, consumer electronics and services that utilize artificial intelligence. With the vision of becoming a human-centered AI company that puts consumers first, LG’s vision for ThinQ is to promote artificial intelligence as an approachable and less intimidating technology.

LG began working on making differentiated and intuitive AI-based solutions for the most commonly used smartphones features more than a year ago. With a particular focus on the camera and voice recognition, the resulting Vision AI delivers a smarter camera that is even easier to use, while Voice AI significantly enhances the breadth of spoken commands in the latest smartphone.

Vision AI: Making Photography Intuitive

Vision AI includes three new intelligent camera features: AI CAM, QLens and Bright Mode that automates and enhances the smartphone image capturing experience for novice as well as experienced shutterbugs.

AI CAM analyzes subjects in the frame and recommends the optimal shooting mode among eight categories: portrait, food, pet, landscape, city, flower, sunrise, and sunset. Each mode enhances the characteristics of the subject taking into account factors such as the viewing angle, color, reflections, lighting, and saturation level.

QLens takes further advantage of the image recognition capabilities of the AI technology to scan QR codes to improve the online shopping experience. Capture an item of interest with QLens to get information as to where to buy the product online at the lowest price as well as recommendations of similar items. Perform an image search with QLens to see matching or similar images of food, fashion and celebrities or detailed information of landmarks such as buildings and statues.

Low light photography on the LG V30S ThinQ gets a huge boost with Bright Mode. Instead of measuring only ambient light like most smartphone cameras, this AI feature uses algorithms to brighten images by a factor of two for better looking photos without the noise.

Voice AI: LG-Exclusive Voice Commands

Another new feature is Voice AI that allows users to run apps and change settings through voice commands alone. Working alongside Google Assistant, the LG-exclusive Voice AI commands eliminates the need to search through menu options and allows for direct selection of specific functions.

More Memory, More Storage, More Colors

The LG V30S ThinQ takes the “flagship” nomenclature to a new level with upgraded features that would satisfy even the most demanding customer. With 6GB of RAM, smooth multitasking and faster performance is virtually guaranteed and storage capacities of 128GB in the LG V30S ThinQ and 256GB in the LG V30S+ ThinQ means that customers will never run out of space. In the rare event that does happen, the microSD slot provides even more storage, up to 2TB.

Still the thinnest and lightest among smartphones with displays of 6 inches or more, the LG V30S ThinQ is no slouch in the toughness and durability category, having passed 14 MIL-STD 810G tests approved by the US Department of Defense. The New Moroccan Blue color has been updated with a green tint while New Platinum Gray gives the device a sophisticated, elegant look. Both devices feature a lenticular finish on the back that displays different hues under certain lighting conditions.

Expanding the Smartphone AI Experience

The AI suite of technologies in the LG V30S ThinQ is the just the beginning of the company’s renewed strategy to create more intelligent smartphones that puts consumers’ needs above all else. While the LG V30S ThinQ offers such advanced features out of the box, certain phones from LG will receive key AI features in future updates delivered over-the-air. Additional LG smartphones will be considered for future AI upgrades, depending on hardware and other factors for the best user experience.

“Many companies talk about AI but we’re already delivering on our promise by integrating intelligent technology in the LG V30S ThinQ to features most commonly used by our customers for a whole new level of convenience never before available in a smartphone of this caliber,” said Hwang Jeong-hwan, president of LG Mobile Communications Company. “And we will continue to introduce new AI capabilities to enhance usability and to demonstrate to our customers that we are committed to delivering a great user experience that continues long after the purchase of an LG phone.”

Attendees of MWC 2018 are encouraged to visit LG’s booth in Hall 3 of Fira Gran Via from February 26 until March 1 for more information on the LG V30S ThinQ.

Price-Friendly Mass-Tier Devices and Flagships

The front and back view of the LG K8 in Aurora Black and the LG K10+ in Moroccan Blue

SEOUL, Feb. 22, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) will unveil the 2018 edition of its popular K8 and K10 mass-tier smartphones at MWC 2018, enhanced with even more premium features rivaling those of premium flagships. Both models will roll out globally in key regions such as Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

With a host of advanced camera features such as high speed auto focus and noise reduction for better low-light photography, the new K Series continues to deliver exceptional products to customers at exceptional prices. Both the K8 and K10 carry over the handsome glossy pebble identity that has been a key element of the K Series’ identity, complemented by its 2.5D Arc Glass design for a modern, seamless look that ages well with time. Both phones will be available in three new, striking colors for 2018: Aurora Black, Moroccan Blue, and Terra Gold.

The classy metallic design of the LG K10 with its metal U-frame not only looks sleek, but it is also packed with premium features not normally found in its price range. The K10 is equipped with the advanced 13MP rear camera technology found in the flagship LG G6 and a high resolution 8MP front camera that supports Bokeh when shooting selfies. With the K10, shutterbugs won’t miss any great photo opportunities with Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) which is 23 percent faster than traditional auto focus. And the new Smart Rear Key not only unlocks the phone with a fingerprint, it also triggers Quick Shutter for faster photos and Quick Capture for easy screen shots.

The updated LG K8 delivers more advanced camera UX features for 2018 and low-light photography has been improved from the previous generation K8 with even brighter, clearer images. Favorite features such as Auto Shot, Gesture Shot, Flash for Selfie and Quick Share are carried over to the new K8 by popular demand.

Clearer photographs in dim environments is made possible in both the K8 and K10 with the new Low Light Noise Reduction feature. Combined with High Dynamic Range (HDR), photos come out sharper with more luminosity and contrast levels.

Taking group photos with friends or family is easier than ever thanks to the new Timer Helper feature. No longer is it necessary to guess how many seconds until the timer triggers the shutter. With Timer Helper, the K8 and K10 will help keep count using the flash as a visual aid so friends and family can be in the exact position at the right time.

Another new feature of the K Series camera is Flash Jump Shot, which snaps a photo every three seconds (up to 20 photos) and stitches the images together into a fun GIF for easy sharing. Flash Jump Shot is available on both the K8 and K10 and can be used with either the front or rear cameras.

“LG’s 2018 K Series range of smartphones is focused on delivering even more value to consumers looking for the right device that fits their lifestyle and needs,” said Ha Jeung-uk, senior vice president and business unit leader for LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We’re confident we can capture the hearts and minds of consumers in the fast-moving market with our smartphone camera technology and other convenient features.”

LG TO INTRODUCE OWN SMARTPHONE AI AT MWC 2018

New AI Functionalities Aligned Closely with
Needs and Usage Behavior of Today’s Consumers

Screenshot of the LG V30’s Vision AI, which can provide shopping advice through smart image recognition

SEOUL, Feb. 13, 2018
— LG Electronics (LG) will introduce the first of a suite of AI technologies for its smartphones at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The new technology will be featured in the 2018 version of the LG V30, LG’s most advanced flagship smartphone to date.

LG spent more than a year researching how AI should be implemented in smartphones, long before announcing LG ThinQ at CES 2018. This research focused primarily on making AI-based solutions with the objective to deliver a unique and more intuitive user experience, focusing on the camera and voice recognition. The result is a suite of AI technologies that is aligned closely with the needs and usage behavior of today’s users.

Vision AI: Next Generation Image Recognition
On top of an already impressive list of camera features that include dual lenses, wide-angle low-distortion lenses, and the all-glass Crystal Clear Lens, Vision AI makes the camera of the LG V30 even smarter and easier to use.

Vision AI automatically analyzes objects and recommends the best shooting mode from among eight modes: portrait, food, pet, landscape, city, flower, sunrise, and sunset. The angle of view, color, reflections, backlighting, and saturation levels are all taken into consideration as the phone analyzes images in its database to determine what the camera is focusing on in order to recommend the best setting. For example, pointing the camera at a plate of pasta will result in food mode being invoked, resulting in warmer colors and heightened sharpening for the most appetizing shot possible.

LG collaborated with a partner in image recognition to analyze over a 100 million images in order to develop the phone’s image recognition algorithms. Over one thousand unique image categories were created for more accurate image analysis, resulting in better shooting mode recommendations.

Another feature of Vision AI provides shopping advice through smart image recognition. By simply pointing the camera at an object, LG’s Vision AI can automatically scan QR codes, initiate an image search or provide shopping options including where to purchase the item for the lowest price and other similar products that the customer might find of interest.

A new low-light shooting mode automatically brightens images in dim environments by a factor of two. Instead of conventional methods of measuring external light levels, Vision AI instead measures the brightness of the actual image that will be recorded, resulting in brightness levels that are adjusted much more accurately.

Voice AI: LG-Exclusive Voice Commands
Another new feature is Voice AI that allows users to run apps and change settings through voice commands alone. Working alongside Google Assistant, the 32 LG-exclusive Voice AI commands – up from 23 commands in 2017 – Voice AI eliminates the need to search through menu options and allows for direct selection of specific functions.

LG AND HONEYWELL DEMO AUTOMOTIVE CYBERSECURITY SOLUTION

Technology Leaders Working Together on Detection, Protection and Reporting Software

Logo of LG Electronics

PLYMOUTH, MICH. and SEOUL, Jan. 31, 2018 — Honeywell (NYSE: HON) and LG Electronics Inc. (KSE: KRX) signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a unique automotive software technology and infrastructure solution to address threats associated with the increase in vehicle connectivity technology. The two companies showcased a collaborative cybersecurity solution at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, and at the recently concluded 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The collaboration between LG and Honeywell is focused on providing automakers a next generation cybersecurity solution for system communications within the vehicle as well as the increasing amount of external communications via cellular and satellite connectivity.

The two companies are focused on the unserved needs of the auto industry to cover the entire cybersecurity chain from individual gateway protection through threat monitoring of fleets. The solution to be developed by the collaboration will integrate LG’s intrusion, detection and protection software (IDPS) technology for securing vehicle hardware from external attacks with Honeywell’s IDPS solutions for securing internal vehicle communication and control networks along with its security monitoring and analytics capabilities for security operation centers.

The collaborative solution helps ensure passenger vehicle safety and security by identifying and validating software commands and data generated by the more than 100 million lines of code governing modern vehicle operation. LG’s electrical gateways and security modules, telematics control unit (TCU), and electronic control unit (ECU) can be an effective toolset for detecting and reporting anomalies preceding a mechanical failure or intentional hack of the vehicle. Honeywell’s software detects anomalies and protects in-vehicle network traffic, when the global security operation centers receive captured data transmitted in either real time or via a scheduled download. These security centers monitor large fleets to provide analytics coupled with an understanding of underlying issues to provide effective remediation options to the auto maker.

Honeywell’s team of software experts and solutions combine more than 60 years of automotive domain experience as a leading global Tier 1 automotive supplier with useful Honeywell experience in critical industrial safety applications. Its automotive software enables real-time vehicle performance diagnostics that can help increase vehicle reliability and up to a 5 percent reduction in warranty costs.

LG’s vision in automotive components business is to become an innovation partner for vehicle electrification by using accumulated know-how from the consumer electronics industry. Vehicle components is LG’s fastest growing business and is expected to play a major role in the future growth of the company. With a wealth of experience in mobile communications, home appliances, consumer electronics and connected vehicles, LG plans to lead the next-generation vehicle components market through collaboration with Honeywell’s differentiated technologies.

SEOUL, Jan. 30, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) will make the LG V30’s popular color options of Moroccan Blue, Lavender Violet and Raspberry Rose available on the LG G6 smartphone and Moroccan Blue, Lavender Violet for the LG Q6, giving consumers more beautiful options than ever before.

With the world’s first 18:9 aspect ratio screen on a smartphone, the LG G6 and its 5.7-inch FullVision display was specially designed to be comfortably held in one hand. With three new colors joining Astro Black, Ice Platinum, Mystic White, Terra Gold and Marine Blue, the LG G6 will look great in anyone’s hand. The LG Q6, popular for its large display and premium features at an affordable price point, comes in seven color options with Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet joining Astro Black, Ice Platinum, Mystic White, Terra Gold and Marine Blue.

With the introduction of the new LG G6 and LG Q6 colors, consumers have more options than ever before in finding a smartphone that best expresses their individuality. The sophisticated hue of Moroccan Blue was inspired by the beautiful blue buildings in the city of Chefchaouen, Morocco. The silvery, romantic shade of Lavender Violet was developed to appeal to both men and women who appreciate the finer things in life. Raspberry Rose offers a strong color saturation that is unique among current smartphones and was designed with anniversaries, graduation ceremonies and Valentine’s Day in mind.

“LG is focusing on producing smartphones that are both high quality and emotionally expressive,” said Park Hee-uhk, vice president and head of product planning for LG Electronics’ Mobile Communications Company. “We want customers to be able to express their distinct personalities through LG’s unique and diverse range of color options.”

The new colors will first roll out in Korea for the LG G6 and LG Q6 in February 2018 followed by key markets worldwide. Additional details, including pricing and release dates, will be announced locally.

(LG) today announced record full-year revenues for 2017 of KRW 61.4 trillion (USD 55.4 billion), an increase of 10.9 percent from the previous year, the highest in the company’s history. Full-year 2017 profits of KRW 2.47 trillion (USD 2.23 billion) – the highest profit since 2009 – increased 85 percent from 2016 due in large part to strong performance by premium home appliances and TVs. Fourth-quarter 2017 revenues grew 15 percent versus 2016 to KRW 16.96 trillion (USD 15.3 billion), generating strong operating profits of KRW 366.8 billion (USD 330.9 million).

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company reported full-year 2017 revenues of 19.23 trillion (USD 17.34 billion), a 11 percent increase from the previous year, reflecting strong demand for premium products such as TWINWash washing machines, InstaView refrigerators and energy-efficient home appliances. Fourth-quarter 2017 revenues of 4.33 trillion (USD 3.91 billion) rose 7 percent from the same period the previous year, with sales in Korea up 27 percent year-over-year. Quarterly operating income declined to KRW 80.7 billion (USD 72.8 million) because of increased marketing expenses related to LG SIGNATURE, infrastructure investments in North America and R&D expenditures related to AI appliances and robots.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported full-year revenues of KRW 18.67 trillion (USD 16.85 billion), a 7 percent increase from the previous year. Strong full-year operating profit of KRW 1.57 trillion (USD 1.41 billion) reflected the continued growth in demand of premium LG OLED and UHD TV products. Fourth-quarter 2017 sales were strong, up 14 percent year-over-year to KRW 5.48 trillion (USD 4.94 billion), thanks to increasing demand for LG premium TVs. Operating income for the quarter increased 134 percent from the same period 2016 to KRW 383.5 billion (USD 345.96 million).

The LG Mobile Communications Company posted full-year sales of KRW 11.67 trillion (USD 10.52 billion) despite a challenging marketplace and strong competition from Chinese brands. Fourth-quarter revenues increased to KRW 3.07 trillion (USD 2.77 billion), while the quarterly operating loss narrowed to KRW 213.2 billion (USD 192.33 million) due to strong sales of the LG V30 and other premium smartphones and an improved business structure.

The LG Vehicle Components Company posted solid full-year sales of KRW 3.49 trillion (USD 3.15 billion), an increase of nearly 26 percent from the previous year, and quarterly sales of KRW 856.7 billion (USD 772.8 million), down slightly from the same period a year earlier. The company’s fourth-quarter 2017 profitability declined due to a temporary decrease in sales in the infotainment business and investments in new business. Growth of the global electric vehicle market is expected to generate additional demand for components in 2018.
