LG’S CONNECTED APPLIANCE NETWORK MAKES THE FUTURE KITCHEN MORE DELIGHTFUL

Offers Seamless Connectivity Through InstaView ThinQTM,
EasyClean® Oven Range and QuadWashTM Dishwasher

LG EasyClean® oven range, QuadWash™ dishwasher, InstaView refrigerator and microwave featuring the LG ThinQ™ logo and the text “Kitchen Solution”

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2018 — At CES 2018, LG Electronics will present its vision for the connected smart kitchen of the future that predicts consumer needs and reduces preparation time. Offering a hands-free experience that takes much of the stress out of preparing daily meals, LG’s smart kitchen products such as the InstaView ThinQ™ refrigerator, EasyClean® oven range and QuadWash™ dishwasher increase efficiency to allow more quality time at home.

LG InstaView ThinQ is the culmination of cutting-edge refrigeration technology and convenience and efficiency. Featuring a 29-inch touch LCD display that transforms from a computer display to a transparent window with just two knocks, the intelligent refrigerator recommends delicious recipes based on what is on hand to provide a revolutionary answer to the timeless question of what to eat for dinner. Once a recipe is selected, the fridge automatically sends the information to a connected oven with Alexa verbally guiding the chef through each step of the process, for a fuss-free cooking experience. Users can also access and listen to their favorite songs on Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, and other streaming music services directly on the InstaView ThinQ for a more pleasant cooking and dining experience.

What’s more, the InstaView ThinQ refrigerator offers a streamlined food management system through LG’s webOS platform and Alexa’s voice recognition technology. The Smart Tag feature allows the addition of stickers, tags and expiration dates to food stored in the smart fridge, issuing alerts as an item reaches its expiration date. When grocery shopping, users can check the contents of the refrigerator via their smartphones connected to the wide-angle PanoramaView camera inside the InstaView ThinQ.

Through partnerships with companies such as Innit and SideChef, LG’s Wi-Fi-enabled AI appliances can provide a wider variety of services to users. The LG EasyClean oven connected to the appropriate app can access recipe information wirelessly and automatically begin preheating at a specific temperature at a set time. When the oven needs cleaning – made simpler by the advanced hydrophilic enamel coating – a notification is automatically sent to the homeowner’s smartphone. And the over-the-range hood and lamp switch on automatically when the cooktop is in use.

To make cleaning up a much more manageable affair, the LG EasyClean oven sends relevant information to the connected QuadWash dishwasher which then sets the appropriate wash cycle based on the dish prepared. For example, the intelligent dishwasher will select a longer running cycle with hotter water for a greasy dish than with a light vegetable casserole. The QuadWash technology comprised of four multi-motion spray arms allows for the fast and meticulous cleaning of items of all shapes and sizes. Both the EasyClean oven and QuadWash dishwasher can be monitored using voice commands LG CLOi robot.

“The seamless connectivity inherent in LG’s smart kitchen solution will revolutionize the cooking and dining habits of consumers,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG’s Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “By streamlining food preparation and cleanup from start to finish, LG’s use of artificial intelligence in the kitchen enhances quality of life by offering innovative solutions to everyday struggles in the kitchen.”

Visitors to CES 2018 can personally experience LG’s smart kitchen solutions from January 9-12 in booth #11100 of Central Hall in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

LG’S AWARD-WINNING 4K UHD PROJECTOR TO DEBUT AT CES 2018

LG’s First 4K UHD Projector Delivers
Stunning Images in Compact, Convenient Package

A man seated on a couch watches video projected onto a wall from LG’s HU80K series 4K UHD projector.

SEOUL, Jan. 5, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) is committing to expanding its competitiveness in 4K UHD home projectors with the HU80K series, its first 4K UHD 1 projector, the recipient of CES’ Best of Innovation award for delivering ultra-sharp video and a home cinema experience in a compact, beautiful design. With the global 4K projector market expected to grow rapidly, LG is confident that its leadership in the LED projector segment can be repeated in the 4K projector segment as well.

Traditionally, projectors that support 4K images tended to be heavy, expensive and cumbersome to install in the home. LG engineers and designers took on the challenge of downsizing the 4K UHD projector without sacrificing image quality and came up with a premium device that is half the size of competing 4K projectors while still being easier on the wallet. LG’s 4K UHD projector promises great cinematic experience thanks to its excellent 4K picture quality and portable size, meaning that the movie environment can be created in any room of the house at any time.

With high-quality video content being available to consumers in more formats than ever before, the benefit of a device with the versatility to display streaming content as easily as a Blu-ray disc has never been more apparent. LG’s 4K UHD projector can create a 150-inch screen at an amazing 2,500 lumens, making this LG’s brightest projector. What’s more, the LG 4K UHD projector also supports HDR content (HDR10) for an eye-popping cinematic experience in the home.

The projector’s portable size and unique upright design is only made possible by the mirrorless I-shaped engine which allows the projector to show perfect images whether it’s placed on the floor, mounted on the wall or hanging from the ceiling. With a convenient carrying handle and Auto Cord feature, owners may never want to mount the LG 4K UHD projector since it looks great in any room for any occasion. What’s more, the Mirror Reflector can be used as a lens cover to protect the projector from dust when stored away. Two powerful yet clear 7W speakers deliver a true cinematic audio experience without the need for external speakers or a soundbar.

LG 4K UHD projector owners will have no shortage of content to watch, as the projector’s webOS 3.5 smart TV interface can access the most popular online streaming services offering 4K content. And standard connectivity options include ports for USB, Ethernet and HDMI, as well as wireless support for external devices such as a keyboard and mouse.

“At this year’s CES event, we are excited to bring value to consumers with our first 4K UHD projector, which delivers the highest resolution we’ve ever offered in a compact size,” said Jang Ik-hwan, head of LG’s IT business division. “LG’s 4K UHD projector will lead the way in changing how consumers view 4K content in any room in the home, wherever there’s an audience.”

Also on display will be LG’s latest version of its portable and convenient MiniBeam Projector (model PF50K), featuring webOS 3.5 and Full HD resolution. LG’s entire 2018 projector lineup can be experienced up close in LG’s booth at CES in Las Vegas from January 9-12.

LG EXPLORING NEW COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES WITH EXPANDING ROBOT PORTFOLIO

Robots the Other Key Factor of LG’s Transformation into an AI Company

Image of CLOi robot lineup: Serving Robot, Porter Robot and Shopping Cart Robot

SEOUL, Jan. 4, 2018 — Following the introduction of the company’s robot lineup a year ago, LG Electronics (LG) continues to push the envelope with the unveiling of three more work robots at CES 2018. LG is introducing three new concept robots specifically developed for commercial use at hotels, airports and supermarkets. These new robots represent LG’s commitment to expanding its business into a future growth engine based on its leading robotics technology.

All part of LG’s new CLOi (pronounced KLOH-ee) robot brand, the Serving Robot, Porter Robot and Shopping Cart Robot follow in the footsteps of the Airport Guide Robot and the Airport Cleaning Robot that recently completed successful trial runs at Korea’s Incheon International Airport. The Lawn Mowing Robot and the affable Hub Robot, which recently participated in a trial at one of Korea’s largest financial institutions providing information and servicing customers at the bank’s branches, are also part of the CLOi family.

The purpose of the Serving Robot is to deliver meals and drinks to guests and customers at hotels and airport lounges quickly and efficiently. The robot can deliver food or refreshments around the clock and with its built-in sliding tray, present the tray to the customer for easy removal. Once the delivery is confirmed, the Serving Robot makes its way back on its own.

Designed to deliver luggage to guests’ rooms, the Porter Robot reduces the inconvenience that may result from slow service and long wait times during a hotel stay. The Porter Robot can also handle express check-in and check-out service and take care of payment, allowing busy guests to check out and have their luggage delivered to a waiting car in a fraction of the time.

LG is also applying its robotics know-how to improve the shopping experience at premium supermarkets. With the help of LG’s Shopping Cart Robot, customers can scan items using a barcode reader on the robot to view product prices and see their complete shopping list on the face display. The robot can also guide shoppers to the products they select on a smartphone app.

LG’s CLOi robots will be developed in parallel to ThinQ products, LG’s AI brand for consumer electronics and home appliances. CLOi is LG’s brand designed to deliver both emotional interaction and innovative convenience to customers utilizing AI technology.

“As an important part of our future growth engine, LG is committed to expanding its portfolio of robots that can deliver real convenience and innovation in our customers’ lives,” said Ryu Hye-jung, head of the smart solution business division of LG’s Home Appliance & Air Solutions Company. “We will continue to develop a wide range of products across commercial and home robots while seeking new opportunities to contribute to the advancement of the robotics industry.”

LG LAYS GROUNDWORK FOR TV OF TOMORROW WITH THINQ® AND α (ALPHA) PROCESSOR

Already Delivering Category-Leading OLED TV and Impressive SUPER UHD TV,
LG Focuses on the Brains Behind the Display

Front view of LG’s W8 ThinQ AI TV.

SEOUL, Jan. 3, 2018 — At CES 2018, LG Electronics (LG) will raise the home entertainment experience to another level with the introduction of ThinQ® artificial intelligence (AI) and an advanced image processor in its newest OLED and SUPER UHD TVs. ThinQ allows the implementation of hundreds of voice requests utilizing the company’s own open smart platform as well as third-party AI services.

With AI functionality embedded in their TVs, LG customers can speak directly into the remote control to enjoy all the convenient features of today’s advanced voice assistant technology. LG’s ThinQ TVs also function as smart home hubs, offering access to other smart home products such as robotic vacuum cleaners, air conditioners, air purifiers, smart lights, smart speakers and many other devices that can connect to the TV via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

And with LG’s newest α (Alpha) 9 processor powering the company’s market-leading OLED TVs, viewers will experience further improvements in what many already consider to be the best TV picture quality. LG Nano CellTM SUPER UHD TVs employ Full-Array Local Dimming (FALD) backlighting to provide deeper blacks and enhanced colors, as well as nuanced shadow details for lifelike images.

Transforming Modern Lifestyle Through Intelligence

LG’s ThinQ offers an enhanced interactive experience in the company’s newest smart TV lineup, including OLED and SUPER UHD TV models by employing Natural Language Processing (NLP) to deliver intelligent voice-activated control and connectivity based on LG’s own deep learning technology, DeepThinQ. With a dramatically streamlined setup process, viewers can easily and quickly connect to gaming consoles and external soundbars. Users can search for information, images or videos featuring specific content by making a verbal request through the TV’s remote control such as “show me all the movies this actor has starred in” or “show me yoga videos”.

LG TVs with ThinQ AI supports services based on Electronic Program Guide (EPG) to deliver information in real time or change to a channel that offers the content requested. Instruct the TV to “search for the soundtrack of this movie” or “turn off the TV when this program is over” without repeating the name of the program or entering a specific time. What’s more, customers in certain countries will be able to utilize the Google Assistant to control smart home devices such as lights or activate third-party services.

Picture Quality Close to Perfection

LG’s newest α (Alpha) 9 intelligent processor provides true-to-life images with incredibly rich colors, sharpness and depth for more realism. A core innovative element of the α (Alpha) 9 is the four-step process of noise reduction, which boasts twice as many steps compared to conventional techniques. This algorithm allows for greater finesse in noise reduction, improving the clarity of images affected by distracting artifacts and enabling more effective rendering of smooth gradations.

The processor also improves color performance, thanks to the advanced mapping capabilities make colors look closer than ever to the original content. The improved color correction algorithm allows for more natural colors by expanding the reference color coordinates seven-fold compared to before. The α (Alpha) 9 is designed to support high frame rate (HFR) for producing smoother and clearer motion images at 120 frames per second for better rendering of fast-action content such as sports and action movies. As a result of the new image processor, 2018 LG OLED TVs can display any content at maximum quality for a truly spectacular viewing experience.

Maximizing Nano Cell with FALD Backlight and α (Alpha) 7

In 2017, LG made a significant achievement toward its highly ambitious vision for producing the ultimate LCD TV picture through its Nano Cell SUPER UHD TVs. By combining Nano Cell, FALD backlighting and the α (Alpha) 7 processor, LG’s 2018 SUPER UHD TV offers a host of technological advantages including deeper blacks, enhanced image rendering, improved shadow details and accurate color from wide viewing angles.

This year’s SUPER UHD TV with FALD allows for denser backlighting zones throughout the display, contrary to edge-lighting where backlights are positioned on the edges behind the TV panel. LG’s technology improves black levels and picture dimensions by independent control of LED light zones, improving shadow details and reducing light bleeding resulting in enhanced contrast and superb picture quality.

Best Possible 4K Cinema HDR Experience

2018 OLED and SUPER UHD TVs from LG feature 4K Cinema HDR, which introduces a truly cinematic experience to the home, regardless of the format. LG’s 2018 OLED and SUPER UHD TVs add support for Advanced HDR by Technicolor, building on a legacy of supporting most major HDR formats, from the superior viewing experience of Dolby VisionTM to HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma). LG’s 2018 OLED and SUPER UHD TVs process HDR images dynamically frame by frame using LG’s proprietary algorithm, Enhanced Dynamic Tone mapping. Both 2018 OLED TVs and SUPER UHD TVs come with Dolby Atmos object-based surround sound for the best audio-visual experience possible.

“LG is continually seeking to innovate in home entertainment and LG ThinQ along with the α (Alpha) 9 processor will deliver a TV viewing experience that is unrivaled in the industry,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “At LG, our interest is in improving user lifestyles and convenience, which our 2018 TVs amply deliver.”

Visitors to CES can experience LG’s TVs of the future for themselves at booth #11100 in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

LG ELECTRONICS AND HERE TECHNOLOGIES PARTNER ON AUTONOMOUS CARS

Partnership to Implement Next-Generation Telematics Strategy in Self-Driving Era

A model poses in a car equipped with HERE Technologies (HERE), a global provider of digital mapping and location services

SEOUL, Dec. 27, 2017 — LG Electronics (LG) is partnering with HERE Technologies (HERE), a global provider of digital mapping and location services, to offer a next-generation telematics solution for autonomous vehicles. The solution combines LG’s advanced telematics technology with high-precision map data and location services powered by the HERE Open Location Platform. Through their planned collaboration, the companies aim to support automakers globally with a robust and secure data communications hub for highly automated and fully autonomous cars.

Telematics is an industry that is defined as the integration of telecommunications and informatics to provide vehicle safety and entertainment services such as navigation, location confirmation and emergency dispatch through various communication technologies, from GPS and DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) networks to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and mobile communication. LG, the leader in the global telematics market since 2013, is committed to introducing next-generation solutions that offer high-precision map information to meet the needs of the quickly expanding autonomous vehicle industry.

HERE is the world’s leading provider of map data and location services to the automotive industry, powering more than 100 million cars on the road today. The company is also working with automakers on the development of HD Live Map, its highly-accurate cloud-based map service which supports connected ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and automated driving solutions. HD Live Map, which LG intends to deploy in the joint solution it offers automakers, identifies all roads and surrounding features such as lane markings, stop signs, crosswalks, speed signs and traffic lights. The importance of the HERE’s intellectual property and potential was highlighted in 2015 when a consortium of global automotive companies – Audi, BMW and Daimler – acquired the company. Since then HERE has also attracted investors from the broader technology industry.

When fully developed, telematics will play a key role as the communication hub for autonomous vehicles. First, sensors in the vehicle’s ADAS – comprised of cameras, radar and lidar – read the surrounding environment and send the data to the cloud along with information on nearby vehicles collected via V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything). All the information gathered is repeatedly analyzed and transmitted to the telematics systems of vehicles for customized driving information.

LG’s telematics solutions support various communication technologies from GPS to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and mobile communication. LG engineers are working earnestly to develop 5G products, which will be four to five times faster than LTE with 90 percent reduction in latency, ideal for next generation autonomous vehicle operation.

“We’re excited to present a new standard for autonomous mobile communication solutions in cooperation with HERE, which has unsurpassed cutting-edge automotive guidance technology,” said Lee Woo-jong, president of LG’s Vehicle Components Company. “With partners like HERE, LG can continue to advance the next generation of connected car technologies to help prepare automakers for the self-driving era.”

“To operate safely and efficiently, autonomous vehicles will need many kinds of robust data sources and powerful communication technologies,” said Moon Lee, vice president of HERE Technologies APAC. “We believe our Open Location Platform-powered services can play a critical role in next-generation telematics technology for autonomous vehicles, and we’re excited to be working with LG to make this a reality.”

With its elegant, stunning profile, this LG monitor turns heads even when powered off, with its 4-Side Edge Borderless Design and gorgeous slim Edge-ArcLine Stand addition to its refined image.

“Most of us spend hundreds of hours in front of monitors every month and yet it’s one of the least likely products to get upgraded when higher productivity is desired,” said Jang Ik-hwan, head of LG’s IT business division. “With these latest premium monitors from LG, we wanted to communicate that LG is absolutely committed to delivering the best possible screen resolution and the best user experience on a desk or workspace.”

Another attention grabber from LG will be LG’s latest QHD gaming monitor (model 34GK950G), which offers premium picture quality with Nano IPS technology and high-speed G-Sync technology.

All this and more can be experienced personally at LG’s booth (#11100) in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center during CES 2018.
