SEOUL, June 16, 2017 — LG Electronics continues to be at the forefront of leadership and innovation for home entertainment with its award-winning LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W just named the highest rated TV by a leading U.S. consumer product publication. LG, which introduced OLED TV to consumers in 2013, is the only manufacturer to offer a range of OLED TV models, including the amazing blade-slim design of the B7 and C7 LG OLED TV series, Picture-on-Glass design of the E7 and G7 LG OLED TV series, and the unique Picture-on-Wall design of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W series.

“LG pioneered OLED TV technology and since its inception has continued to dedicate enormous resources to its growth to the benefit of all consumers,” said Brian Kwon, president of the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “Top TV reviewers consistently rank OLED as the best TV technology available, and we’re the only manufacturer to offer a variety of OLED TV screen sizes and models – there is no better time to purchase the best TV technology on the market.”

According to a leading U.S. consumer publication, LG OLED TVs received top scores for picture quality, viewing angle, and versatility resulting in the highest rank for overall performance. LG HONORED FOR SUPPLY CHAIN SUSTAINABILITY BY GREEN ELECTRONICS COUNCIL AT 2017 CES ASIA

LG OLED TVs Singled Out for Design with Environment in Mind

Logo of LG Electronics

SHANGHAI, June 8, 2017 — LG Electronics (LG) has been honored for innovation in supply chain sustainability by the Green Electronics Council. Presented today at CES Asia™ 2017, the Catalyst Awards seek to inspire innovation in the design, manufacture and use of electronics to advance global sustainability.

LG’s special distinction as GEC 2017 “Catalyzing Impact at Scale” Honoree recognizes LG OLED TVs, which created a new premium TV category with environmental sustainability at its core. LG OLED TVs achieve significant reductions in hazardous and raw materials content compared to conventional LCD TVs, while LG’s green product design for recycling and supplier programs advance supply chain sustainability.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance customer value, LG strives to make products with greener features and to reduce the environmental impact of our products throughout their lifecycle,” said Lee Choong-hak, executive vice president of LG Electronics in charge of corporate social responsibility initiatives. “LG OLED TVs, designed with the environment in mind, are prime examples of this lifecycle strategy approach.” For example, LG OLED TVs have reduced weight and use PVC-free internal cables and BFR-free housing and parts. The emissive LG OLED panel emits light instead of a mercury-containing backlight lamp. Materials also are minimized to enhance recyclability.”

Nancy Gillis, CEO of the Green Electronics Council, said, “The negative environmental and social impacts resulting from complex global supply chains are among the greatest challenges currently facing the IT industry,” said “We congratulate LG for demonstrating ways to address this challenge and exhibiting sustainable supply chain leadership and innovation.”

LG OLED TVs are optimized to minimize environmental impact and to provide high performance and customer value with features such as perfect black and limitless contrast, and 4K Ultra HD and high-dynamic range capabilities. LG quantifies and analyzes the environmental impact of products at every stage of their lifecycle; implements its strategic framework for products with greener features, which takes into account three core factors of human, energy and resources; and drives R&D based on these factors.

What’s more, the company’s comprehensive supply chain sustainability management program helps suppliers improve their environmental performance by transferring LG’s green technologies and related know-how. The program helps LG promote suppliers’ competitiveness in sustainability management and identify supply chain risks and address global regulatory requirements.

In addition to being named 2017 GEC Catalyzing Impact at Scale Honoree, LG supply chain sustainability has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with the top-level Gold Tier Award in the EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management Electronics Challenge and by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries with the ISRI Design for Recycling award for advanced new television products (LG OLED and LED 4K Ultra HD TVs) that emphasize recycling during every lifecycle phase.

The Green Electronics Council Catalyst Awards seek to inspire innovation in the design, manufacture and use of electronics to advance sustainability. By recognizing transformative yet scalable advances, the GEC highlights innovative best practices throughout the supply chain that move society closer to a world in which only sustainable electronics are designed, manufactured, purchased and processed at the end of their useful life.

LG AND LONDON VEGETABLE ORCHESTRA KEEP IT FRESH THIS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Edible Instrument Musicians Demonstrate How Food Waste Can Be
Reduced with Refrigerator Technology from LG

Two female musicians take food from LG’s advanced refrigerators.

SEOUL, June 5, 2017 — To raise awareness of the issue of food wastage this World Environment Day, LG teamed up with the music-making talents of the London Vegetable Orchestra to demonstrate how advanced refrigerator technology can help extend the life of fresh foods for weeks or months, even against the demands of quirky performance art.

Food waste is one of the biggest challenges of our time. According to the United Nations, up to one third of all food is spoiled or wasted before it is ever consumed. Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tons — gets lost or wasted, amounting to roughly USD 680 billion in industrialized countries and USD 310 billion in developing countries.1 Fruits and vegetables have the highest wastage rates of any food due to their fast spoilage rate and lack of artificial preservatives.

Refrigeration technology dramatically changed the way societies evolved because refrigerators allowed people to move away from the agrarian lifestyle into more urban environments. But even refrigerators have their limits. Sweltering temperatures can cause foods, especially natural foods such as fruits and vegetables, to spoil even when stored in a refrigerator. For maximum benefit, refrigerators must be insulated from fluctuating ambient temperatures which can alter the interior temperature of a refrigerator. The changing temperature inside the refrigerator has a great impact on the shelf life of food, more than the coldness of the refrigerator itself.

The musicians of the London Vegetable Orchestra (LVO) learned firsthand that not all refrigerators are created equal.

LVO musicians create green-symphonies with edible instruments by “hacking” fresh produce in a musical way. The orchestra, which got its start more than three years ago, has entertained United Kingdom music lovers with their instruments constructed of squashes, peppers, cassava roots, carrots and pumpkins. Because their performances depend on the ability to generate precise sounds with their instruments, the musicians were forced to create new instruments every day with fresh vegetables as older produce could not create the notes that the musicians required as part of their repertoire.

But then LVO members were introduced to LG refrigerators with patented Inverter Linear Compressor technology. When the musicians placed their instruments in LG’s linear-equipped refrigerator, there was almost no difference in the sound even after a week in storage. This is possible because the enemy to long term food storage isn’t heat but temperature fluctuation. LG refrigerators with Inverter Linear Compressor not only keep food fresh longer, they do it with less energy and less noise. LG achieves this by reducing friction through structural enhancements and focusing more energy on keeping food fresh.

Recognized for Effective Marketing Creatively Demonstrating Key Product Feature

A professional card stacker Bryan Berg building house of card atop an LG Centum System™ washing machine with AME Award 2017 logo featured

SEOUL, May 30, 2017 — Proving that a washing machines can be the star of a viral video, LG Electronics’ House of Cards video was the recipient of an AME Award in the category of branded entertainment. One of the most prestigious industry honors, the AME (Advertising & Marketing Effectiveness) Awards recognize a marketing campaign’s strategy, creative concept, production value and most importantly, effectiveness, on the global stage.

The video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEftHIXPG2Y) quickly achieved 100 million cumulative views across various sites when it debuted on YouTube last spring. In the video, professional card stacker Bryan Berg is seen building a 3.3-meter-tall house of cards on top of an LG Centum System™ washing machine running at 1,000 RPM, a feat which earned Berg a world record for the highest card structure built in 12 hours. The video was designed to demonstrate in a creative manner LG’s new Centum System, which maximizes the washing machine’s reliability and energy efficiency with minimal vibration and noise.

“Creativity is our most effective tool for breaking through the clutter and getting our home appliance message in front of target consumers,” said Han Chang-hee, vice president of marketing at LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “It’s always appreciated when industry leaders recognize the good work that we’ve been doing. Our thanks and gratitude go out to the judges of the AME Awards for this honor.”

Following on the success of its House of Cards campaign, LG produced a series of popular videos to tell the story of its unique and innovative appliances, including “painting” a gigantic wall mural using over 18,000 lightbulbs and commissioning a professional rock climber to scale a 33-story building with nothing more than the suction power from two cordless vacuum cleaners.

ENJOY YOUR LG G6 TO THE MAXIMUM: THE DISPLAY

The LG G6 is a premium smartphone that takes user convenience to the next level. Given the phone’s wide range of user-friendly functions, this is the first in a series of articles that will help G6 owners discover handy features that they might have overlooked.

The LG G6 is built around an immersive 18:9 FullVision display. To help users get the most out of their screen, the display offers features such as app scaling, which enables users to enjoy the FullVision display to the maximum, and comfort view mode, designed for voracious readers.

Three LG G6 smartphones in white, black and silver color variations

1. Optimize Your Apps for Maximum Usability

By offering a screen aspect ratio of 18:9 instead of the usual 16:9, the LG G6 fits more data onto the screen, enables the screen to be split into two perfect squares for multitasking, and allows users to enjoy a more immersive gaming experience.

LG is working closely with app developers to introduce more apps and content in 18:9 screen aspect ratio. Apps created in 16:9 ratio may experience some cropping when viewed on an 18:9 display. Fortunately, LG offers an app scaling mode which allows you to manually adjust the settings of each app to run in compatibility (16:9), standard (16.7:9) or full screen (18:9) modes. A button to adjust the ratio will appear whenever a new app is installed but you can change the setting at any time.

To adjust app scaling, do the following:

  2. Tap the Display button
  3. Tap App scaling
  4. Select the app to adjust
  5. Select the desired aspect ratio option

2. Relieve Eye Fatigue with Comfort View

With the popularity of digital displays, it is becoming rarer and rarer to see commuters reading books or newspapers on the morning commute. But reading for an extended period of time on electronic screens can lead to eye fatigue. While the best solution to tired eyes is to take a break, LG offers a feature in the G6 that can help stave off tired eyes so you can get more done. Adopted from the LG G Pad III and the LG V20, users can manually adjust the display to four different modes – low, medium, high or black and white – to filter blue light, the cause of most eye strain.

SEOUL, May 22, 2017 — LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its second X series smartphone for 2017 designed for active users who want a smartphone that can keep up with their on-the-go lifestyles.

The LG X venture is the company’s newest mass-tier smartphone designed for users who want a tough adventure companion device that doesn’t sacrifice on features or looks. With IP68 compatibility for water and dust resistance, the LG X venture passed 14 different MIL-STD 810G tests designed for the U.S. military. In addition to measuring resistance to extreme temperatures, shock and water, the LG X venture was repeatedly immersed in 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes and passed with flying colors.

Bundled in the active lifestyle app is a barometer, compass, activity counter (steps/calories/distance), exercise tracker, weather reporter and flashlight. The phone offers a robust but stylish design with a metal frame and a non-slip back cover and will be available in black and/or brown.*

LG understands that not all outdoor activities occur in warm climates so the LG X venture was designed with three physical keys on the front as well as a QuickButton on the side allows for easier interaction with the phone while wearing gloves or in wet or muddy environments. QuickButton works differently depending on how it’s pressed — short press for Outdoor Essentials, long press for settings and double press to toggle Glove Mode to recognize screen taps and swipes with gloved fingers. QuickButton can be customized to launch your favorite application and works even when the screen is off.

The LG X venture carries over a number of popular features from LG’s flagship G and V series smartphones such as the fingerprint sensor and dual cameras. A 5MP 120-degree wide angle front camera is perfect for large group shots while the rear 16MP camera delivers breathtaking shots with incredible sharpness and detail. A heavy-duty, high-capacity 4,100mAh embedded battery lasts for up to 24 hours between charges and with Quick Charge 2.0, the LG X venture charges from empty to 50 percent in only 48 minutes.

“Consumers with active lifestyles want devices that they don’t need to coddle or worry about when they’re on the go,” said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “But the LG X venture isn’t a ruggedized phone that makes sacrifices. LG AND SES TO DEMONSTRATE 4K HIGH FRAME RATE TECHNOLOGY AT SES INDUSTRY DAYS

Next-Generation Feature of Ultra HD to be Transmitted Live on
LG OLED TV via ASTRA Satellite

LG OLED TV’s cutting-edge 4K High Frame Rate (HFR) showcased at the tenth SES Industry Days conference in Luxembourg, in collaboration with SES.

LUXEMBOURG, May 16, 2017 — SES and LG Electronics (LG) will demonstrate OLED TV’s cutting-edge 4K High Frame Rate (HFR) broadcast at the tenth SES Industry Days conference in Luxembourg, on 16 and 17 May. The 4K HFR content will be transmitted live via an ASTRA satellite at 19.2 degrees East and displayed on LG’s OLED TV using a prototype HFR software. This demonstration will offer visitors the opportunity to experience the highly improved image quality of next generation 4K HFR broadcast content.

HFR is a new broadcast technology that enhances the quality of 4K Ultra HD images by increasing frames per second (FPS) up to 120, the maximum for broadcast content, compared to most current content which typically supports 50 FPS content. The enhanced FPS rate is particularly beneficial to feature fast action such as sports with lifelike, highly fluid images, while eliminating motion-related picture degradation found on conventional TVs such as motion blur and judder.

In addition to display manufacturers, global broadcasters and content providers are also preparing for the launch of the second phase of Ultra HD using the DVB UHD-1 Phase 2 specification, which features 4K HFR technology. The UHD-1 Phase 2 standard includes other cutting-edge technologies such as High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Next-generation Audio (NGA).

“We are very excited to demonstrate just how effective LG’s OLED TV is as a platform for 4K HFR and other high grade content,” said Sam Kim, senior vice president and head of TV product planning at the LG Home Entertainment Company. “LG is committed to offering consumers around the world the latest in TV technologies and High Frame Rate on OLED TVs must be seen to be believed. Watching 4K HFR content on an OLED TV as it’s being transmitted in real time by ASTRA’s satellite is a great example of pushing the limits of current TV technologies.”

“SES has been steadily pushing forward development of Ultra HD and the Industry Days event has always been an excellent platform to showcase new TV technology,” said Thomas Wrede, vice president New Technology & Standards at SES. “High frame rate will be an important step towards further enhancing the quality of Ultra HD satellite transmissions, in particular for sports and reality TV events. Our continued partnership with LG Electronics is important in setting the broadcast standards of tomorrow and for pioneering future TV technologies and we are very pleased to work with LG Electronics on such an important milestone.”

LG WEBOS 3.5 SMART TV PLATFORM EARNS COMMON CRITERIA CERTIFICATION FOR SECURITY EXCELLENCE

Latest Smart TV Platform Earns Prestigious CC International Security Certification
for its Ability to Provide Superior Privacy Protection

An LG OLED TV with Common Criteria certification logo on its right side.

SEOUL, May 8, 2017 — LG’s webOS 3.5 smart TV platform was recognized with a Common Criteria (CC) certification for its enhanced Application Security Solution Version 1.0 software. By snagging another internationally-recognized security certification, LG continues to demonstrate that its smart TVs are among the strongest when it comes to smart TV security. The recognition comes at a time when consumers are increasingly concerned about the potential of privacy breaches on their Internet-connected devices.

Security Manager, the webOS 3.5 security software module, was tested in accordance with Common Criteria’s rigid benchmarks. CC’s internationally-recognized ISO/IEC 15408 standards are used by governments, banks, and other organizations to assess the security capabilities of individual products including 27 member countries from around the world including Australia, France, Japan, Korea and the United States.* The test examined three phases of smart TV security : application installation protection, application execution protection and application content protection with digital rights management (DRM) encryption.

LG webOS 3.5 provides excellent application installation protection and blocks the installation of unauthorized apps by conducting a rigorous digital signature verification process. The LG App Store server oversees the digital signature generation process to ensure that webOS 3.5 installs applications downloaded only from the LG App Store. LG webOS 3.5 also delivers protection depending on the type of application – platform apps (also known as native apps) or web apps. For native apps, webOS 3.5 implements sandboxing technology according to each application’s security attributes to block access to unauthorized system directories/files, device files and other data. LG webOS 3.5 allows web applications to use only approved application programming interfaces (API) to prevent these web apps from directly accessing sensitive information in the file system. In addition, the latest webOS offers a powerful DRM license verification process designed to decrypt the encrypted content inside RAM (random-access memory) and to create a clean backup of encrypted content in flash memory.

“We have taken every possible step to ensure that webOS 3.5 offers excellent application protection and the highest level of privacy security,” said J.H. Hwang, senior vice president and head of R&D at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “Consistent with customers’ concerns over product security issues, we have enhanced the security of our smart TV platform. Certification by Common Criteria confirms that we’re on the right track when it comes to customer privacy and data protection.”

A picture of LG Twin Towers in the daytime

SEOUL, Apr. 27, 2017 ― LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced first-quarter 2017 revenue of KRW 14.66 trillion (USD 12.70 billion), an increase of 9.7 percent from the same period last year. LG nearly doubled its operating income to KRW 921.5 billion (USD 798.3 million) with the Home Appliance & Air Solutions Company posting its highest quarterly operating income in eight years.

LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company reported a 10 percent increase in first-quarter sales from the same period a year earlier and 15 percent higher than the previous quarter. Revenues of KRW 4.64 trillion (USD 4.02 billion) reflected strong performance in Asia and Latin America. Domestic sales were 33 percent higher year-over-year due to strong performance by TWINWash washing machines, air conditioners and some refrigerators, as well as the company’s newest premium LG Styler clothes management system and air purifiers. As LG enters the peak season, the company foresees an improvement in the business environment across much of Asia and Latin America, two key growth markets.

LG Home Entertainment Company recorded its highest first-quarter operating margin of 8.8 percent on sales of KRW 4.33 trillion (USD 3.75 billion), largely due to expanding sales of premium products, improved cost structure and a more flexible strategy to deal with the increase in panel prices. The company expects TV demand in the next quarter to remain positive due to opportunities in North America, Latin America and Asia, led by the growing popularity of premium LG OLED and Ultra HD TV products and the rollout of the new LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W.

LG Mobile Communications Company reported revenues of KRW 3.01 trillion (USD 2.61 billion), an increase of 4 percent quarter-over-quarter and 2 percent year-over-year, driven by the launch of the flagship LG G6 smartphone and new mass-tier models. The company reported smartphone shipments of 14.8 million units this quarter, up 10 percent from the first quarter of last year in large part due to the Americas. While effects of last year’s reorganization are beginning to bear fruit, price competition in the mass-tier segment and competition from other flagship models are expected to increase this year.

LG Vehicle Components Company reported strong sales of KRW 876.4 billion (USD 759.2 million), a 48 percent increase from the first quarter of 2016 thanks in large part to the successful collaboration with General Motors on the popular Bolt electronic vehicle. Continued investments in R&D and growth are expected to continue to affect profitability this year.

TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA and the team celebrate their exhibition, “TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA x LG: S.F_Senses of the Future,” winning the top prize at Milano Design Award 2017.

MILAN, Apr. 7, 2017 — LG and world-renowned designer Tokujin Yoshioka took the top prize at Milano Design Award 2017 for the collaborative art installation, TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA x LG: S.F_Senses of the Future. The large-scale light installation was praised by Milan Design Week’s judging panel for its “ability to synthesize the conceptual, technological, narrative and emotional aspects in one single project.” The installation is on exhibit until 9 April at Superstudio Più in Milan.

TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA x LG: S.F_Senses of the Future combines LG’s cutting-edge technology with Tokujin Yoshioka’s groundbreaking experimental designs to illustrate humanity’s relationship with the natural world and to illuminate LG’s human-centric design philosophy. The exhibition consists of two parts, S.F chairs alongside Wall of the Sun, and artfully taps into the innovative properties of LG’s OLED display and lighting technologies.

“This is a tremendous honor for us as we are immensely proud of the exhibit we designed for Milano Design Week this year,” said Tokujin Yoshioka. “The collaboration with LG and their unique technology was a special experience for me and this recognition make the effort that much more rewarding.”

“As the center of the design world, hundreds of thousands of design enthusiasts visit Milan every year looking for upcoming trends and we are extremely proud to be a part of that narrative,” said Noh Chang-ho, head of corporate design at LG Electronics. “To receive this honor in the design capital of the world is humbling and truly rewarding.”
